Even with only four runners, you rarely see races as good as this. Mill House really took the race to Arkle from the start, setting a good strong gallop, he always seemed to be going the better of the two till the last two fences. Arkle had pulled hard for much of the race which often takes it out of a horse. But he was a real machine, he had to be really because Mill House was a machine himself at this stage of his career. All credit to Arkle, though, that he still had the energy to pull away on the run in after all the pulling he had done. A great performance by this greatest of steeple chasers.

Arkle no superlatives could do him justice , I was a kid but I ll never forget him , nobody will., Mill House and Pas Seul were great quality horses in their own right , Arkle was asked to give three stone away in handicaps and did so easily , breathtaking , unbelievable , unforgettable., the greatest ever .
To win a hat trick of a Gold Cup, Hennessy and King George VI, all as a 6 year old, was extraordinary. Mill House really was a tremendous horse, bless him...
It shows O'Sullevan's talent as a journalist that he references the similarities between this and the other big talking point of the time....the defeat of one great champion by one who was to prove the greatest.
The race is in black and white, the jockeys kit looks cumbersome, the commentary, is staid, but, but, but the horses look the same as they do today! Enjoying, fighting, loving RACING

Not so sure about the chancy jumps. He did tend to treat fences with disdain. I have ridden hard pulling horses (not any where near this level on a racecourse) and it is not a lot of fun. It must be difficult when you have something like that under you.
I thought so mate, he got close to a few and lost ground, pulled hard, and still produced, he was still a comparative novice at this stage. He improved a good stone or more next season.
@TissuePrices Dont forget Kauto was injured as a novice back in these days likely he would never have raced again. Kauto is a great horse best of his era though Denman for me is the better horse. Each of the the true greats Arkle Dessie and Kauto should be celebrated for what they achieved Kauto is the luckiest races today are framed to help the good horses so they dont need to struggle in handicaps both the others proved greats at both handicap and level weight contests.
It's a few years now since I last saw this clip but it still looks good. It looks like the race was run on Cheltenham's old course but today it is run on the new course. It would be interesting to know what year it changed.
@TissuePrices Dont even get me started over Kauto's so called unequalled 2 mile domination Dessie contested his Tingle Creeks conceding an average of 2 stone + all round every year not level weight contests or else Dessie would have had at least 3 Tingle Creeks to his name. Kauto is racing in a time when races are framed to help the best horses and rightly so and he sets a modern standard but Denman proved he also had the class of the old type chaser too Kauto never did or will.
My top 5 chasers of all time would be 1. Arkle 2. Golden Miller 3. Flyingbolt 4. Prince Regent 5. Mill House. The chaser of the modern era wouldn't have been good enough to have coped with the 5 I have named, IMO.
Quite amusing to read some of the comments left by 'certain parties' regarding recent champions being better than Arkle. Despite all of the evidence of his superiority, despite all of the testimonials from trainers & jockeys (living or dead) about his superiority, despite the facts that no other horse has ever won a top class steeplechase conceding the weigth he did - still they line up to don the "I shot JR" t-shirt!
how can u say golden miller was better than arkle, they ran in different eras, in the 35 gold cup he only just held off a horse called thomond 2 at level weights, dont think thomond was high class, he also ran badly in most of his grand nationals, completely unsuited to aintree

The Only Horse that gets in the Argument with Arkle as the Greatest steeplechaser at their peak is the unlucky Flyingbolt. His performances in the 1965/66 were almost identical to Arkle in that they were beating the same horses by the same distances giving virtually the same weight. I read somewhere that a work rider of Dreapers at the time actually quietly said that Flyingbolt could beat Arkle at levels. What a Shame they did not meet in the 1966 or `67 Gold Cup.
Arkle was superb of course but all credit to Mill House who kept on galloping right to the end, it wasn't as easy as most people think for Arkle who had to be rousted along all the way up the straight
To pull that hard and then go up the hill like that against a 191 rated chaser, is head shaking stuff. Imagine any horse doing that to Sprinter Sacre at his peak. That’s what you’re talking about here.

A great race a great horse and a great commentator. Arkle is regarded as the best ever but Flyingbolt was nearly the equal. Mill House was a champion but born in the wrong era. Dessie Kauto & Denman were top Gold Cup horses but not in the same league as Arkle & Flyingbolt. At this moment in time A Plus Tard and Galvin are the two favourites for this years gold cup which goes to show how poor the current crop are.
Burrough hill lad when at his best Was better than kauto.....as his Hennessy under 12 stone attests. Kauto star tried twice to give meagre weight and failed both times.
All those people that compere best mate kauto star denman dessie (my hero) only dessie can compere to him cos they both carried big weights in handicaps also they framed 2 handicaps for arkle one if he ran one if he didn't the best without question
@TissuePrices I added the Beef or Salmon as a modern day example winning a grade 1 being a crap level of stardom but thats how it seems to be rated. Denman for me will always be the better Gold Cup horse simply because he performs much better of the pair there and so the better stayer. Kauto is the quicker of the 2 but in a true run Gold Cup didnt truely stay view any footage of him in them and he never fully got home. Both are the best for many years but no better than the greats
@TissuePrices Dont need to be smoking anything Denman hammered Kauto twice in the Gold Cup including when having a badly interupted preparation. Kauto is a great horse I aint doubting that but to slate these old greats is rediculous they were trained in a different way to modern performers but were just as dominant in their time and raced far more frequently and under much more testing race conditions akin to Denman.
@bluemanc43 I agree that Dessie's record over 8 seasons merits immense respect. He could have won some of Kauto's King Georges but wouldn't have beaten him going left-handed. Unlike Arkle & Dessie, Kauto doesn't have any big handicap wins under top weight & I doubt if he would have won Denman's two Hennessys under the same weights. The best weight carrying performance has to be Red Rum in the 1974 National, conceding 1lb to l'Escargot. Top weight now is 11-10; Rummy won it with 12-0!
@@mizofan Yes, no compressed weights then. The unluckiest loser apart from Devon Loch. 23lbs to the greatest Grand National horse ever and lost by less than a length. At least he won the rematch with Rummy at level weights, at Doncaster. The bravest weight carrying performance has to be Suny Bay in 1998, conceding the same to Earth Summit on heavy going.
Desert Orchid and Kauto Star are the 2 best 3m chasers I've seen since getting into racing in 1989. At their peak around a left handed track i'd favor KS, on a right-handed track i think it would have been very close. Ever since i've gotten into racing it's been sacrilege to mention any horse in the breath as Arkle. I understand why he is rated the best but I have a very hard time believing that he could have given between 20lbs & 30lbs and a beating to DO & KS around Kempton.

@TissuePrices Denman wasnt a 2 miler either way round he was a grinder stayer and if your crabbing him for that how many Hennessies would Kauto win ZERO is the answer he was a speedster. Kauto beat Denman on his favoured ground in the Gold Cup next year Denman blew him away on his and last year beat him yet again when both tried to burn off Long Run. You can only really rate them both at Cheltenham as both performed highlty there.

In the Gallagher Gold Cup he gave Mill House 16 lbs, and only 2 years before Mill House was dupped the horse of the century, n knocked 17 seconds off the course record, a record that has stood for 53 years

@bluemanc43 can you tell me how many tingle creeks denman won? how many times he won going the other way? going on good ground, denman only had 2yrs at the top, kauto 7. Ruby walsh and nicholls both say kauto is better, as do many others. when denman beat kauto he wasnt right, the true difference between the 2 was show in 09goldcup when he won by 13lengths, a rout. denman can only win going one way over one trip and on soft ground, one tricky pony
On a form line with Height O'Fashion, Flyingbolt was greater than Arkle. People don't like hearing that, but if Arkle had beat Height O'Fashion by further and giving more weight that would be another string to his bow. Truth is Flyingbolt gave more weight and a bigger beating to him.
Arkle gave 42lb to Height of fashion in the 1966 Leopardstown chase, Splash also received 42 lb and was beaten 15 lengths into third. Flyingbolt gave Height of fashion 40lb in the 1966 irish national and beat her 2 lengths, splash received 42 lb and was beaten 10 lengths. You need to some research!!

Wrong. The best mare ever, and I do mean since racing began, was the mare Beeswing. She was a flat racer, not a jumper, but her record is far superior to that of any other mare, and almost all geldings that have ever raced. You will need to do your own research for her racing record. Please be good enough to post it here after you have seen it. Just as an aside, see how many extremely famous racehorses trace back to her along the top line through her son Newminster. Anybody with an interest in horses has to know about Beeswing.

Kauto like i have said is a great horse that any modern 1 can be rated against and his rating is backed up by Denman who proved they were rated about right due to his great handicap performances. But as as i recently said to someone else Beef Or Salmon won 10 Grade 1s but wouldnt win a seller over here need i say more.

No doubt Arkle was the greatest of his era and until now, but Sprinter Sacre is about to take his crown away. All these great horses talked about here, including Arkle, made some serious jumping errors. Sprinter Sacre simply does not make serious errors and lands running at speed. This horse could win the Queen Mother on the Wednesday and then the Gold Cup on Friday, he is that good. He would certainly get 2m 6f and be that far ahead, they couldn't catch him. I just hope Nicky has a go at it.

The further this race recedes into the past the more iconic it becomes. We often hear people say if Arkle were to be around today would he win as much. I'd turn it around and say if we sent today's best back to 1964 would they beat Arkle. The answer is no.
I agree with most of your comments, mervyncharter, but I'm not so sure that even at his peak, Flyingbolt would have beaten Arkle at level weights, particularly over an extended 3 miles. Over 2 miles it would have been a different story, perhaps. In any case, Dreaper had the two greatest post war chasers in his yard, and that is still true today, in 2012.
This race is the Holy Grail of horse racing. Arkle's greatest race and what a battle with his old enemy Mill House. Anyone with the slightest interest in horse racing - pull up a chair and just watch PURE HISTORY happen infront of your eyes. We are now in 2011, in 5011 - they will still be talking about Arkle and this race. Many thanks putting this one up - you should get a Noble Peace Prize for this FULL RACE upload. Brilliant !
Fulke Walwyn , trainer of Mill House , said that on the day he never had the horse in better shape , and wouldn't hear of defeat for his champion chaser , whom he rated the best he had ever trained . He was so confident that Mill House would win that the idea that any horse ( even Arkle ) could lower his colours was simply ludicrous . After the race , Walwyn still couldn't comprehend how Arkle could beat Mill House so decisively . But then , Arkle was no ordinary horse .
It was just the English pompous attitude that they are the best and they can't be beaten , that's until the Irish turn up ...Arkle is the best racehorse to ever grace a racecourse flat/jumps ....the BEST HIMSEL F .....

Kauto would have won less than half his grade 1s in Dessies time never mind Arkle's why coz they were either handicaps and he wouldnt have in them run or they didnt exist. Dont give Kauto such praise too in his oh he was so good over so many seasons at the highest level Dessie raced in Grade 1s from 5 to 12 over hurdles as well as fences. Statrs Dessie 71 starts Kauto 40 who had it tougher?
I remember seeing this live and the thrill of seeing the ultimate power house Arkle. I have never seen a horse like him before or since. To put him into perspective, he would beat Bravemansgame who got beat today by over 40 lengths in a hack canter. I would seriously doubt that Bravemansgame would get within 10 lengths of him receiving 2 stone. Mill House was another great chaser but with the misfortune of coming along at the same time as Arkle. Old Pas Seul the veteran and 1960 Gold Cup winner, as a younger horse he loved to dominate a race. Great race and we sure as hell don’t get horses like this anymore. The greatest horses in the 60’s.

@112sje Best Mate good horse but faced nothing of any note quality wise. Injury does play a big part if Dessie had been in Arkles era he wouldnt have run often Kauto / Denman likely would have been retired due to his leg injury / heart scare, thats the type of things that makes it difficult to establish bests of the best. 2000s are so lucky in having a modern Arkle / Mill House to keep the racing bug jumping wise debated and rightly so. Long live our legends memories.

To be a legend you first have to beat a great horse. The reason Arkle is top rated IMO is on the strength that he ran and won his 3 CGC, his handicap victories thou shall not ever be repeated due to the changes in handicapping can be at least matched by his stable companion Flyingbolt, who never ran in the CGC. Since those days there is only a few chasers that I think should be considered in the same breath , in no particular order, Captain Christy, Burrough Hill Lad and Desert Orchid,. Also I put Badsworth Boy into the mix. The so called modern day heroes like Kauto Star never had to burden big weights in handicaps, even Denman's exploits in the Hennessey were in what I call Limited handicap conditions, weights are compressed to favour the better horses. Then we have the best who never won a CGC like Crisp , Pendil and Wayward Lad. Pre Arkle days we had the likes of Easter Hero, Golden Miller, Prince Regent and Cottage Rake.
Badsworth boy is the best 2 miler since flyingbolts champion chase...his first win was Arkle like...32 lengths I think, quality field. He also won giving 12-7 in handicaps..... sprinter sacre shouldn't be above him.
Let's be grateful we've had all these great staying chasers to enjoy over the years. Denman was a better Gold Cup horse than Kauto Star because he beat him in in three of the four Gold Cups they raced together. Kauto is the better all round chaser because of the variety of courses on which he can race and, hence the more Grade 1 chase wins. To maintain such a high standard over so many seasons is a terrific achievement while Arkle's career was cut short by leg injuries. Don't forget Best Mate !

@arkleno1 Have to agree Kauto is the modern day Arkle, Dessie marker and if pushed in between Arkle Dessie probably also Captain Christy and One Man. All were by far the best jumpers and speediest perfomers of their day and their day being it. Each was trained to the best available standards of their times nobody knows how they would cope in another era certainly Kauto wouldnt have raced again beyond his Exeter fall in any bar Dessies era.

Each of the the true greats Arkle Dessie and Kauto should be celebrated for what they achieved Kauto is the luckiest races today are framed to help the good horses so they dont need to struggle in handicaps both the others proved greats at both handicap and level weight contests.
It's a few years now since I last saw this clip but it still looks good. It looks like the race was run on Cheltenham's old course but today it is run on the new course. It would be interesting to know what year it changed.
@TissuePrices Dont even get me started over Kauto's so called unequalled 2 mile domination Dessie contested his Tingle Creeks conceding an average of 2 stone + all round every year not level weight contests or else Dessie would have had at least 3 Tingle Creeks to his name. Kauto is racing in a time when races are framed to help the best horses and rightly so and he sets a modern standard but Denman proved he also had the class of the old type chaser too Kauto never did or will.
My top 5 chasers of all time would be 1. Arkle 2. Golden Miller 3. Flyingbolt 4. Prince Regent 5. Mill House. The chaser of the modern era wouldn't have been good enough to have coped with the 5 I have named, IMO.

Quite amusing to read some of the comments left by 'certain parties' regarding recent champions being better than Arkle. Despite all of the evidence of his superiority, despite all of the testimonials from trainers & jockeys (living or dead) about his superiority, despite the facts that no other horse has ever won a top class steeplechase conceding the weigth he did - still they line up to don the "I shot JR" t-shirt!

how can u say golden miller was better than arkle, they ran in different eras, in the 35 gold cup he only just held off a horse called thomond 2 at level weights, dont think thomond was high class, he also ran badly in most of his grand nationals, completely unsuited to aintree

The Only Horse that gets in the Argument with Arkle as the Greatest steeplechaser at their peak is the unlucky Flyingbolt. His performances in the 1965/66 were almost identical to Arkle in that they were beating the same horses by the same distances giving virtually the same weight. I read somewhere that a work rider of Dreapers at the time actually quietly said that Flyingbolt could beat Arkle at levels. What a Shame they did not meet in the 1966 or `67 Gold Cup.
arkle was having his first run giving 3 stone to height of fashion but flyingbolt was a great horse but over 3 mile arkle would beat him

Arkle was superb of course but all credit to Mill House who kept on galloping right to the end, it wasn't as easy as most people think for Arkle who had to be rousted along all the way up the straight
To pull that hard and then go up the hill like that against a 191 rated chaser, is head shaking stuff.

A great race a great horse and a great commentator. Arkle is regarded as the best ever but Flyingbolt was nearly the equal. Mill House was a champion but born in the wrong era. Dessie Kauto & Denman were top Gold Cup horses but not in the same league as Arkle & Flyingbolt. At this moment in time A Plus Tard and Galvin are the two favourites for this years gold cup which goes to show how poor the current crop are.

@TissuePrices I added the Beef or Salmon as a modern day example winning a grade 1 being a crap level of stardom but thats how it seems to be rated. Denman for me will always be the better Gold Cup horse simply because he performs much better of the pair there and so the better stayer. Kauto is the quicker of the 2 but in a true run Gold Cup didnt truely stay view any footage of him in them and he never fully got home. Both are the best for many years but no better than the greats
@TissuePrices Dont need to be smoking anything Denman hammered Kauto twice in the Gold Cup including when having a badly interupted preparation. Kauto is a great horse I aint doubting that but to slate these old greats is rediculous they were trained in a different way to modern performers but were just as dominant in their time and raced far more frequently and under much more testing race conditions akin to Denman.
@bluemanc43 I agree that Dessie's record over 8 seasons merits immense respect. He could have won some of Kauto's King Georges but wouldn't have beaten him going left-handed. Unlike Arkle & Dessie, Kauto doesn't have any big handicap wins under top weight & I doubt if he would have won Denman's two Hennessys under the same weights. The best weight carrying performance has to be Red Rum in the 1974 National, conceding 1lb to l'Escargot. Top weight now is 11-10; Rummy won it with 12-0!
Poor Crisp was magnificent in 73 and would have beaten Red Rum but for the weight.
@@mizofan Yes, no compressed weights then. The unluckiest loser apart from Devon Loch. 23lbs to the greatest Grand National horse ever and lost by less than a length. At least he won the rematch with Rummy at level weights, at Doncaster. The bravest weight carrying performance has to be Suny Bay in 1998, conceding the same to Earth Summit on heavy going.
Desert Orchid and Kauto Star are the 2 best 3m chasers I've seen since getting into racing in 1989. At their peak around a left handed track i'd favor KS, on a right-handed track i think it would have been very close. Ever since i've gotten into racing it's been sacrilege to mention any horse in the breath as Arkle. I understand why he is rated the best but I have a very hard time believing that he could have given between 20lbs & 30lbs and a beating to DO & KS around Kempton.

@TissuePrices Denman wasnt a 2 miler either way round he was a grinder stayer and if your crabbing him for that how many Hennessies would Kauto win ZERO is the answer he was a speedster. Kauto beat Denman on his favoured ground in the Gold Cup next year Denman blew him away on his and last year beat him yet again when both tried to burn off Long Run. You can only really rate them both at Cheltenham as both performed highlty there.

When Denman won his Gold Gup yes it almost killed him but not enough to stop him coming back and beating that same horse last year but oh Kauto wasnt right again all last year neither was Denman. In the Gallagher Gold Cup he gave Mill House 16 lbs, and only 2 years before Mill House was dupped the horse of the century, n knocked 17 seconds off the course record, a record that has stood for 53 years

So arkles 17 seconds record needs to be looked at regarding the distance of the race.

can you tell me how many tingle creeks denman won? how many times he won going the other way? going on good ground, denman only had 2yrs at the top, kauto 7. Ruby walsh and nicholls both say kauto is better, as do many others.
when denman beat kauto he wasnt right, the true difference between the 2 was show in 09goldcup when he won by 13lengths, a rout. denman can only win going one way over one trip and on soft ground, one tricky pony
On a form line with Height O'Fashion, Flyingbolt was greater than Arkle. People don't like hearing that, but if Arkle had beat Height O'Fashion by further and giving more weight that would be another string to his bow. Truth is Flyingbolt gave more weight and a bigger beating to him.
Arkle gave 42lb to Height of fashion in the 1966 Leopardstown chase, Splash also received 42 lb and was beaten 15 lengths into third. Flyingbolt gave Height of fashion 40lb in the 1966 irish national and beat her 2 lengths, splash received 42 lb and was beaten 10 lengths. You need to some research!!

Wrong. The best mare ever, and I do mean since racing began, was the mare Beeswing. She was a flat racer, not a jumper, but her record is far superior to that of any other mare, and almost all geldings that have ever raced.
You will need to do your own research for her racing record. Please be good enough to post it here after you have seen it.
Just as an aside, see how many extremely famous racehorses trace back to her along the top line through her son Newminster.

Kauto like i have said is a great horse that any modern 1 can be rated against and his rating is backed up by Denman who proved they were rated about right due to his great handicap performances. But as as i recently said to someone else Beef Or Salmon won 10 Grade 1s but wouldnt win a seller over here need i say more.

No doubting both there talent but be honest any horse who jumped well and had pace like best mate or even dessie at his best could of taken lengths out of them they hit so many

No doubt Arkle was the greatest of his era and until now, but Sprinter Sacre is about to take his crown away. All these great horses talked about here, including Arkle, made some serious jumping errors. Sprinter Sacre simply does not make serious errors and lands running at speed. This horse could win the Queen Mother on the Wednesday and then the Gold Cup on Friday, he is that good. He would certainly get 2m 6f and be that far ahead, they couldn't catch him. I just hope Nicky has a go at it.

The further this race recedes into the past the more iconic it becomes. We often hear people say if Arkle were to be around today would he win as much. I'd turn it around and say if we sent today's best back to 1964 would they beat Arkle. The answer is no.

I agree with most of your comments, mervyncharter, but I'm not so sure that even at his peak, Flyingbolt would have beaten Arkle at level weights, particularly over an extended 3 miles. Over 2 miles it would have been a different story, perhaps. In any case, Dreaper had the two greatest post war chasers in his yard, and that is still true today, in 2012.

Fulke Walwyn , trainer of Mill House , said that on the day he never had the horse in better shape , and wouldn't hear of defeat for his champion chaser , whom he rated the best he had ever trained . He was so confident that Mill House would win that the idea that any horse ( even Arkle ) could lower his colours was simply ludicrous . After the race , Walwyn still couldn't comprehend how Arkle could beat Mill House so decisively . But then , Arkle was no ordinary horse .

Kauto would have won less than half his grade 1s in Dessies time never mind Arkle's why coz they were either handicaps and he wouldnt have in them run or they didnt exist. Dont give Kauto such praise too in his oh he was so good over so many seasons at the highest level Dessie raced in Grade 1s from 5 to 12 over hurdles as well as fences. Statrs Dessie 71 starts Kauto 40 who had it tougher?

I remember seeing this live and the thrill of seeing the ultimate power house Arkle. I have never seen a horse like him before or since. To put him into perspective, he would beat Bravemansgame who got beat today by over 40 lengths in a hack canter. I would seriously doubt that Bravemansgame would get within 10 lengths of him receiving 2 stone. Mill House was another great chaser but with the misfortune of coming along at the same time as Arkle. Old Pas Seul the veteran and 1960 Gold Cup winner, as a younger horse he loved to dominate a race. Great race and we sure as hell don’t get horses like this anymore. The greatest horses in the 60’s.

Kauto is very Dessie like in that he could dominate 2 to 3 miles + but he certainly wasnt Dessies superior again its different eras If the Tingle Creek and Victor Chandler would have been grade 1s in Dessies day he would have walked them year in and out even though he beat Panto Prince in the best Victor Chandler ever giving him 22lbs no less. @112sje Best Mate good horse but faced nothing of any note quality wise. Injury does play a big part if Dessie had been in Arkles era he wouldnt have run often Kauto / Denman likely would have been retired due to his leg injury / heart scare, thats the type of things that makes it difficult to establish bests of the best. 2000s are so lucky in having a modern Arkle / Mill House to keep the racing bug jumping wise debated and rightly so. Long live our legends memories.

they are the same age, raced in the same era, yet katuo has achieved so much more, yet for you denman is the better horse?
To be a legend you first have to beat a great horse. The reason Arkle is top rated IMO is on the strength that he ran and won his 3 CGC, his handicap victories thou shall not ever be repeated due to the changes in handicapping can be at least matched by his stable companion Flyingbolt, who never ran in the CGC.
Since those days there is only a few chasers that I think should be considered in the same breath , in no particular order, Captain Christy, Burrough Hill Lad and Desert Orchid,.
Also I put Badsworth Boy into the mix. The so called modern day heroes like Kauto Star never had to burden big weights in handicaps, even Denman's exploits in the Hennessey were in what I call Limited handicap conditions, weights are compressed to favour the better horses.
Then we have the best who never won a CGC like Crisp , Pendil and Wayward Lad. Pre Arkle days we had the likes of Easter Hero, Golden Miller, Prince Regent and Cottage Rake.

Badsworth boy is the best 2 miler since flyingbolts champion chase...his first win was Arkle like...32 lengths I think, quality field.

Let's be grateful we've had all these great staying chasers to enjoy over the years. Denman was a better Gold Cup horse than Kauto Star because he beat him in in three of the four Gold Cups they raced together. Kauto is the better all round chaser because of the variety of courses on which he can race and, hence the more Grade 1 chase wins. To maintain such a high standard over so many seasons is a terrific achievement while Arkle's career was cut short by leg injuries. Don't forget Best Mate !

@arkleno1 Have to agree Kauto is the modern day Arkle, Dessie marker and if pushed in between Arkle Dessie probably also Captain Christy and One Man. All were by far the best jumpers and speediest perfomers of their day and their day being it. Each was trained to the best available standards of their times nobody knows how they would cope in another era certainly Kauto wouldnt have raced again beyond his Exeter fall in any bar Dessies era.

Flying Bolt in the 60s was the closest Master Minded could be compared to but even he was rated slightly behind Arkle.
