He was just too damn awesome for this world. I don't think he ever had a role that he didn't blast out of the park. Can you imagine him and Depp kicking it in 2000s?!
My favorite of the franchise because of the character moments with Indy & Henry. Also, his going through the booby traps to find the Grail was unforgettable. Finally, the ending is one of the best in all of cinema. From the excellent John Williams score to the "Junior" reveal & finally the heroes riding off into the sunset. It still puts a smile on my face.
What I find amusing is that Harrison Ford and the late, great Sean Connery were actually closer in age than their characters. If memory serves, they even joked about it in later interviews. R.I P. Sean Connery ❤ R.I.P. River Phoenix ❤
Sean Connery was a good choice to play Henry Sr. TBH, The scene that best captures the father/son dynamic with them was that fork in the road argument following the motorbike chase. 😎
Yeah the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery was great I believed it more than I did the supposedly father-and-son relationship of Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf. Where there was no chemistry.
There was no chemistry between Mutt and Indy because they were more or less strangers to each other in Crystal Skull, whereas Indy and his father did have history with each other in Last Crusade.
I have to admit this is my favorite of the Indiana Jones franchise. I will say that Raiders is the best of the series, but I like how this one took everything back and has the same feel as Raiders. Plus the dynamic between Ford and Connery is ridiculously entertaining. The scene where Henry thinks Indy died is my favorite moment in the whole film, maybe the whole series
Steven Spielberg wanted to end the series here, which is why he had the final shot of riding off into the sunset. He said he never thought he would make more, but people kept asking when he would make the next movie to the point Harrison Ford and George Lucas brought it up
It was mainly George that wanted more and that specifically wanted aliens. If he came up with a more sensible idea, I'm guessing we would have had a fourth IJ in the 90s.
I was a huge Indiana Jones superfan as a kid, even dressed up with a hat and a whip to reenact the best parts of the movies. I always dreamed of sequels in the years after Last Crusade... But if Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny taught me anything, it's that some things are better left alone, and there is such a thing as "too late". To me, the original movies are the best trilogy of all time. The latter two films are more like Indiana Jones satires.
This has always been my favourite in the franchise and the true real ending to the series. The chemistry between Sean Connery & Harrison Ford as the father and son duo brings something really fresh to the series. It's this part that is the core major highlight of the film and Connery literally steals every scene that he is in.
Thank you for this wonderful retrospective. The only thing I'm still curious to know is ... who came up with the idea of Indy's father using his umbrella to scare the birds, which then took out the airplane? It was brilliant!
Forget the Boredom of shia LaBeouf and the destruction of legacy Indiana Jones and the last crusade is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME and STUNNINGLY AMAZING Rest in peace river Pheonix, Sean Connery legends never die
One of the fascinating through lines of this series is the partnership between Lucas and Spielberg, who i think really brought out the best in each other. There are lots of instances where one of them convinces the other to abandon a bad idea. Something they both could have used on various other projects.
Temple was very dark but as the "midpoint" of a trilogy it does make sense for it to be a low point, you can't peak in the middle. It fits far better in the series than a 4th one 18 years later and a 5th one another 15 years after that!
It's my favorite one. I never saw it as TOO much darker than the other 2 tbh. In a franchise of exploding heads, melting faces, and gruesome aging to a pile of ash and dust, it fit well. It's a hectic roller coaster of 80s action 💪
This was the perfect ending to a trilogy. I just watched this again on showtime for 6000th time and it still feels like the first time watching it. And only Connery could have played that role...
I saw this at the theaters 3 times when it was first released, and I've only done that with maybe 5 movies over my entire 52 year life. I can't stand most movies, and rarely went to the movies due to how little I cared for most offerings. So to see a film and pay for it three times, says something really special about this movie. Rest in peace to those amazing actors from this film who are no longer with us, as you all made this movie what it was, is and forever shall be.
I didn't see this until it came on television. I think the only films I saw multiple times in the 80s was Return of the Jedi and the Transformers. Still this IS a good movie-don't get me wrong.
Having rewatch the entire series before Dial of Destiny I forgot how great Last Crusade was. I always loved it but it was a great reminder how fun it was to see Indy with his father and so many fun set pieces. The tone felt a bit more light hearted than the first two even though all three had great comedic moments. Definitely should have ended here although I liked Dial of Destiny too.
In my opinion this was the last Indiana Jones movie, like Star Wars they should have let the trilogy be this franchises legacy. But sadly money often reboots/brings forth a crappy sequel to our childhood movies. Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Dysentery is a good example of leave it alone 😄
I absolutely HATE the renaming of the first 3 Star Wars movies. WHY??? Just let them be! Everyone knows what you mean when you say Empire or Jedi. I'll stop here before I go off on a rant but I'm sure you know what I mean.
15:05 Biblically accurate depiction of the curse described in Zechariah 14,12: "And their flesh will rot where they stand. Their eyes will rot in their sockets. Their tongues will rot in their mouths." Describing the fate that awaits the enemies of Zion (who will all be totalitarian imperialists, so there's no need to shed a tear for a single one of them).
With the release of Dial of Destiny, it makes Crystal Skull look like a masterpiece and the only stupid things about it were the alien reveal and Indy surviving a nuke in a fridge
@@creativeguy1martinez693 While I agree Dial was worse than Skulls, neither were good. I could happily sit down tonight and watch any one of the original trilogy even though I have seen them many times, I really have zero interest in watching the other 2 again.

Indy in a haunted house is actually a intriguing concept. I’m glad with what we got but still…the mind wonders. Also I actually like the dial of destiny and had fun with it.
Sean Connery made almost anything watchable. He's been in some bad movies, but he almost gets you through them by letting you know he knows it's ridiculous. Diamonds Are Forever was one of the first movies where I got the sense he knew what the audience knew. Fortunately, this is a great film and he's just having fun with it because he knows he's in good hands. There's no winking and nodding like in some of his poorer films. I wish Karen Allen had returned, though. That's my one criticism of the movie. The Dr. Schneider character wasn't bad, but Marian was a classic badass chick who could get in over her head with multiple baddies, but she was more than capable and intelligent. Dr. Schneider created that illusion early on, but it was clear she was putting on a mask. She was really just a damsel in distress with villainous tendencies. Granted, she was a lot better than Willy, who was horribly annoying and frustrating to watch. But it was great to see Indy and James Bond in a movie together. Once CG was introduced into these movies, they went straight to hell. What made the first 3, even the 2nd one, good was the storytelling and the stunt work. Everything looked real because it was real. Human beings made the first 3, not a computer.
The only REALLY bad movie not even Sean Connery could save was The Avengers. What could have been some retro 1960s goofy fun was completely ruined by bad jokes and over-acting and a bad story. A pity since The Avengers tv show that the movie was based on was lots of fun. (Not to be confused with Marvel's The Avengers, but the spy show).
Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade is 35 years old! I remember my late dad had it on vhs tape recorded The film works tremendously thanks to the perfect chemistry of Ford and Connery; their wit full banter is so much fun seeing them bounce off back and forth Considering Indy didn't have a perfect upbringing and his father was more obsessed with artifacts and his studies than his own son would create a rift There's a few touching scenes highlighting that Indy deep down has a big respect for this man who's let him down time and time again The score still works by John Williams, there's plenty of fun action set pieces from a plane shootout to a tank chase in the desert to a pursuit by Nazis via motorcycle, some impressive special effects with the Holy Grail itself, and there's many lighthearted moments The writers cleverly insert a lot of the Arthur legend with Christian mythology There's also a great theme of fathers and sons, the true treasure is the love and acceptance we seek from our parents, teaching our kids self reliance is either beneficial or harmful, taking a leap of faith is all it takes, there's a price for immortality choosing wisely or poorly, seeking illumination is more valuable than treasure Sadly River Phoenix as young Indy passed away at a young age and many fans and critics would've preferred this to be the final film But two sequels did follow allowing the legacy of this character to live on for newcomers 'Last Crusade' has a very accessible plot and developed the main character's backstory even more making the emotional crux of the film work while also capturing the classic B-movie thrills of those old serial adventures It's right up there with 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' recapturing the same magic that made these films so special
I like that The Last Crusade showed how Indy got that scar on his chin by using by River Phoenix as young Indy misusing the whip. Harrison Ford has never revealed how he actually got that scar.
The scar was a result of "a fast car crash," which Ford described as "a real mundane way of earning it." A then unknown Ford was driving to work at a California department store one morning when, while fumbling with his seatbelt, he crashed into a telephone pole. Slamming headfirst into the steering wheel, followed by some "inept emergency surgery," as the "Star Wars" star put it, resulted in the scar.
I love this film. It's damn-near perfect, and was, for awhile, a fitting ending for the Indiana Jones saga. Why, oh _why_ did they try to milk it further?
That scene where young Indiana gets his hat and transitions to mature Dr Jones smiling right before getting hit still gives me goosebumps. This is my favourite of the trilogy (fuck your cristal skulls and disney turd).
I watched crystal skull for the first time last month and honestly it isn’t that bad. It’s basically the Indy version of a Star Wars prequel. I enjoyed it, and I was entertained throughout. DOD though I turned it off after around 40 mins. It was soulless and boring. Like if you asked AI to make an Indy film.
That photo @1:15 of a poor Indy, being corralled by Lucas and Spielberg, reminds me of the classic Southpark episode where the boys try to rescue Indy from them both. He looks a little uncomfortable? 😪
One of the most extreme rare examples of how a sequel can turn out as good if not better than the original. The style and vision of Lucas and Spielberg is magical
I dont miss this movie as much as I miss the time it was released. This was still a time in life that I believed in action and adventure. Now post Covid, the world has changed to shit, and everyone is an A hole. I miss that feeling of being a kid and everything seems possible. FML Im so depressed.
I mean the exterior of the Grail Temple was shot in Petra, Jordan. The way the video is edited made it seem like they built the exterior. Also, the transformation/death of Julian Glover is obviously stop motion. I don't think the whole thing was practical like the video also seems to suggest.
Haven't watched the video yet, but the answer to the Video Title's question is: Yes. Yes it was. (and I quite liked Dial of Destiny....but it is short of a "great movie")
Yes, it is. But that doesn't make the sequels terrible. LC may not be as flawless as Raiders, but it's a worthy sequel and a good movie in its own right.
@@CaptainSpalding72: I have the 4 movie 4K set, AND the 5th movie in 4K. When the 5th is properly available on full quality optical media, I will replace my current version then.
While I hold the first 3 movies in such high regard. AND I do consider the first 3 to be a Great "Beginning, Middle and End" of a Trilogy series. I won't deny my enjoyment for everything Indy. Crystal Skull was tough to love, but had moments of pleasure. The Dial of Destiny improved upon what the Crystal Skull could have done but it too was flawed. So nothing will top those first 3 for me. But I do love me some Indy, even if those youngsters say "No more." Why? Because it was never about the adventures he went on but HOW he overcame insurmountable odds to succeed. It was his character's journey I cared about most, in no small part to Harrison Ford himself.
Yes - it's the last decent Indiana Jones film. What really makes the film is team of Ford and Connery as father and son. The idea of Indian Jones and James Bond together in a film. They have good chemistry, and it does touch on the father and son relationship. It also manages to have an element of fun - which was really missing in Temple of Doom(which I do think is quite a flawed film). It was also good that Sallah and Marcus Brody made a comeback. Elisha was a good Indy girl - far better than Willie. Walter Donovan is a decent enough villain - probably not in the same league as Mola Ram and Belloq though. There are some decent action set pieces : the speedboat chase in Venice and tank chase in finale. I do think the finale, where Indy has to get the grail is well thought out(he needs otherwise his dad will die). I suppose you could argue that it feels sort of Raiders-lite - but never the less, I think it would probably been a good send off for Indy. It still has a place in my heart. Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls wasn't a bad film - but it just felt so uninspired. Really flat tonally. It really did feel "Indiana Jones by the numbers". The only redeeming thing about that film was the bringing back of Marion Ravenwood.
Recently I watched the original Indy trilogy. I turned this one off half way through, around the time Indy and his dad were on the blimp having a drink. As a child I loved this movie, watching it now it seemed like a bunch of skits with Connery and Ford, and some of the the effects look terribly dated. Strange that the effects from the first 2 hold up but in this installment, not so much. Much like Return of the Jedi, the tone of this movie can lean comical and seems to be directed towards younger children. The movie is fine as the 3rd installment, but IMO it's the weakest of the first 3.
You didn't find ToD to be comical and silly in parts? Willie Scott's antics throughout, the elephant trek to the village and the monkey brain feast are all much more cartoony and juvenile than the parts in Crusade. Maybe some of the FX (like the blimp sequence) have aged, but the overall story, dialogue and script holds up.
@@TheMrHavish There were definitely comedic elements in all of them, but Last Crusade felt like a series of skits to me. Also prefer Willie Scott to the cblonde turncoat in Last Crusade.
@@TheLedonne3 The movie's the most emotional with Indy's relationship with his dad. There's an actual story with character relationships/story arcs and emotional resonance - which let's face it, ToD (while it's a fun movie) had little of. Even if there's humor, the movie gets serious when it needs to be. The boat chase in chase in Venice, the scene where Indy and Henry briefly talk about Indy's mom, the Nazi book burning, the scene after the tank fight where they think Indy's died are NOT played for laughs at all. Also, the stakes behind acquiring the Grail and the finale where Henry's been shot are taken pretty seriously and it has a sense of urgency the other sequels never recapture. You're also selling Dr. Elsa's character a bit short. Sure, she's working for the Nazis, but her duplicitous nature conflicting with her love for the Jones men, makes her more interesting than Willie, who's basically a one-dimensional comic relief/love interest who's just there along for the ride and doesn't really play an important role in the story.
Although Crystal Skull isn't as bad as people say, the original trilogy will still be talked about in 50 years compared to DoD, a movie I don't even care to see, but probably will watch when it drops on D+ and maybe just a one-time thing.
the legacy should have ended with the LAST crusade.....perfect movie....Ford was the perfect age.....it's been nothing buy horrible since then, and it's sad. But no one can take away the feeling I had as I ran out of the theater in 1981, using my pretend whip to swing from branches and whatnot.....It goes Raiders, Last Crusade, then Temple of Doom.....as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing after those three.
Maybe it is, but I always interpreted the sequence to be more about why he gained his love of adventuring and archaeology and River Phoenix does a great in the scene.
Something about harrison ford characters getting that treatment. The han solo prequel (Though not starring him obviously) pretty much hashed out his great moments pre-new hope in like a week or something if I remember correctly
Tarantino didn't like the casting and performances I don't understand why It's James Bond, the legendary Sir Sean Connery teaming up with Han Solo/Indiana Jones Ford
Every time I watch this movie I feel sorry for Elsa. She wasn't evil, just young and ambitious. I wish there was an alternate ending where she lives through the end. 😢

Batman 89 is dated by today's standards. Last Crusade holds up.
"You chose....wisely."
And yet, the more time passes, the more Temple of Doom is my favorite
That photo @1:15 of a poor Indy, being corralled by Lucas and Spielberg, reminds me of the classic Southpark episode where the boys try to rescue Indy from them both. He looks a little uncomfortable? 😪
One of the most extreme rare examples of how a sequel can turn out as good if not better than the original. The style and vision of Lucas and Spielberg is magical
No one wrote a script for last crusade. They just took the raiders script and changed a few words
My personal favourite of the bunch
I dont miss this movie as much as I miss the time it was released. This was still a time in life that I believed in action and adventure. Now post Covid, the world has changed to shit, and everyone is an A hole. I miss that feeling of being a kid and everything seems possible. FML Im so depressed.
I'd like to say something positive here but fact is, you're right. Shit fucking sucks.
Dial was never going to even touch Crusade. And this is coming from someone who also liked the movie too.
Indiana Jones 1 is a masterpiece
True
Yes, it is. But that doesn't make the sequels terrible. LC may not be as flawless as Raiders, but it's a worthy sequel and a good movie in its own right.
The best of them, even if temple is my sentimental favorite for how bonkers it is. Raiders is simply action adventure done to perfection
The 4th Indiana jones was also a good movie.
The best Indiana Jones movie, by a long margin!
The second and greatest of the Indiana Jones duology!!!
Drop the question mark and you got it right.
I recently got all 5 movies in 4K, but the last two were mainly just to complete the set.
Cheers 🍻
You didnt get Dial of Destiny as it's not officially out in "SET" yet.
@@CaptainSpalding72:
I have the 4 movie 4K set, AND the 5th movie in 4K. When the 5th is properly available on full quality optical media, I will replace my current version then.
I love The Temple Of Doom.
Totally agree. The last two movies were clearly inferior to the first three, but so what? They gave me a few more hours with a beloved old friend.
Thank goodness they left it at three. Could you even imagine.
The actress who played Elsa also played a small role in James bond movie, a view to kill
With a name like the one he got, yeah it isn't a mystery why Indy named himself after the dog.
Totally agree. The Temple of Doom is the best of the three. Also the best villain.
Yes, it's also the last great film Lucasfilm made
Although Crystal Skull isn't as bad as people say, the original trilogy will still be talked about in 50 years compared to DoD, a movie I don't even care to see, but probably will watch when it drops on D+ and maybe just a one-time thing.
I would agree with the title.
Yes
Why is there a question mark in the title?
I remember seeing this in the theater as a kid and I loved 🥰 it
It's sad what happened to him. River Phoenix would've been awesome in the young Indiana Jones adventures.
Simple answer: Yes.
Nice recognition of Davies work ethic.
Yes it is
Oh yes!! This movie just is that awesome!❤
Selecting to watch this video….you have chosen wisely 🤪
My favorite order for Indy? 3, 1, 2, 5, and 4.
The short answer- yes. Yes it is.
they just had one of those guys in Canadian parliament
TOD - underrated, TLC - overrated
the legacy should have ended with the LAST crusade.....perfect movie....Ford was the perfect age.....it's been nothing buy horrible since then, and it's sad. But no one can take away the feeling I had as I ran out of the theater in 1981, using my pretend whip to swing from branches and whatnot.....It goes Raiders, Last Crusade, then Temple of Doom.....as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing after those three.
My favorite line: "You lost today, kid...but that doesn't mean you have to like it."
It's kind of ridiculous that he, gets the scar, his fear of snakes and the hat in a manner of a few hours.
He hates snakes, not fear it😂
Ridiculous? Well maybe, but we've seen more ridiculous stuff in the franchise.
@Batman88878 true but everything happened so fast in that sequence
Once again, George Lucas needs more level headed people in his projects to make them workable.
BORE-RUM-WOOD.
It’s a fun pronunciation.
an old school classic..
