Indiana Jones and the Perilous Art of The Sequel
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- Long before the Dial of Destiny, Jaws Director Steven Spielberg made Raiders of The Lost Ark for friend and Star Wars creator George Lucas in 1981... on the condition he'd also make an Indiana Jones trilogy. While Lucas was no stranger to sequels, Spielberg had never made one. Nor could he predict the exact, perilous adventure that Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, and even The Kingdom of Crystal Skull would take him on over the next 25 years of his career...

I can't believe the real Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was the friends we made along the way!
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO FUCKING SAY THAT FUCK
@@natethebluesman bruh
The Temple of Doom is wonderful for all of this turmoil bubbling to the top. It's an insane, rage-filled and violent theme park ride and I'm there for it.
I really love how you delved deep into the personal significance and the journey that the filmmakers (especially Spielberg) were going through in their own personal lives while making these movies. As the big Indiana Jones fan that I am, I knew a lot of the behind-the-scenes details that you talked about, but the approach that you took really puts everything into a new perspective and helps to comprehend how our journey through life affects the art that we make. I didn't believe I could ever see my favorite movies and the stories of how they were made in a different way-a better, much deeper way-but you made it. Fantastic work, and I hope to experience little pieces of your own soul in everything that you make in the future.
This is pretty much the best response I could've hoped for. Sincerely, thank you. Grateful you connected with this :)
This is becoming one on the best video essay channels around.
Oh no it always has been. It's just taken a while for the algorithm to catch up.
I aim to please. Thank you 🙏
Indeed. The quality has been top notch, from the very start, and I'm happy the algorithm caught up.
It has been the best since the beginning. The quality is top notch
The narrator needs to learn to pronounce Scorsese properly. Other than that, very good.
You've shown that a lot of what made Speilberg's movies was his family. He surrounded himself with great people to support him in his creative endeavors. I thought this video would just be covering the films themselves, but you went more in depth, so thank you.
Absolutely. Glad you enjoyed it!
I always hoped that Lucas would start his own movie studio to foster upcoming rebel directors like he used to be.
This rocked. It’s rare now to find a commentary/video essay channel that’s actually saying something new. Loved having this whole new lens of the Indiana Jones sequels. Great video! I hope Dial of Destiny is better than I’ve heard.
Don't know if you edit your own videos or have an editor but the fact that this video only has 60,000 views is criminal. The sound design alone in this is great not to mention the script writing. Bravo will definitely be on the lookout for future videos
Cheers, I really appreciate the recognition (I write and edit everything myself!).
Incredible as always! This video got me thinking about how perfect your in-depth documentary-style video production would be for the James Bond franchise. If you’re interested, you could cover it in a few parts like you did for The Clone Wars. Either way, looking forward to what’s next!
I actually very nearly started working on a James Bond series like 2 years ago, whenever the last Craig film came out. Each video was going to focus on a different Bond actor. I shelved it since it'd probably take a lot of work lol but I want to revisit it one day. Thank you for checking this out!!
@@ArTorrPresents honestly it'd be great if you even just examined one actor's particular career, or also the insanity of the legal shit behind Bond which is always hinted towards but never really discussed (probably a bit boring tbf lol, still Never Say Never Again is insane and its backstory even more so). I mean the pair of Timothy Dalton films are so interesting to look at by themselves, or how easily we forget that John Glenn directed most of the Moore films, the same director yet each film very different too. Idk Bond is so much more rich for discussion than ppl think.
Yes please do the James Bond franchise!!
I know it's an immense task but....please!!🤘
If there's ever an sixth Indiana Jones film, it better be about ancient aliens and take place in a Scottish castle, or else I will be severely disappointed.
This video is insanely good, the parallels drawn between the Indy trilogy and the life of Spielberg is brilliant.
This is easily one of my favorite videos of yours. Incredible, insightful, so much research and passion put into this.
So glad you enjoyed it as much as you did then. Thank you!!!
Raiders was my father's favorite movie, so as a young boy I watched it with him many many times. Last Crusade became my favorite, and has only gotten better as Ive grown older - Im sure due to the complicated father/son dynamic, and my being able to see it from different points in my life as I now have sons of my own. I never realized how much of a personal reflection that theme was for Spielberg. Thanks for this insight! Incredible essay.
That's awesome. I love the stories people have about these movies with their families. Thanks for checking this out!!
This was insanely well edited. Looks like a high budget TV special. Very informative as well. Well done.
Thank you!!
A really beautiful tribute to Spielberg and Indiana Jones!
I can’t say enough good things about your work. The storytelling, the editing, the emotion and the overall pacing and content are all incredible. These are genuine documentaries and I love them.
Already excited to rewatch this a month or 2 from now, after rewatching the Star Wars Rebels video that makes me cry every time of course.
Keep crushing it!
Dude, I have to say... this video is not only an incredible essay, but better edited than many documentaries I've seen. The way you used classic Indy sequences to set the mood for the dramatic moments in your script is awesome. As a fellow editor, I must say: what a fantastic job!
The narration, the editing, the use of the music by John Williams, this is a masterpiece of video essays in UA-cam, Indiana Jones films are my favorite after Star Wars (though I remember liking Indy already since I watched bits of it as a kid, and I remember very well the commercial of Lego Indiana Jones when I played Lego Star Wars: the Complete Saga), this video acknowledges those who worked on the movies, I feel proud to know who the main members of the team are, Steven Spielberg was the first film director I ever heard of and he is still one of my favorite directors, he deserves win the Honorary Academy Award, I think George Lucas (maybe even Harrison Ford and John Williams) deserves one for their contributions to the film industry, I'm not from their generation but I grew up with those films and love them, if I have kids someday I will show them these movies, they can be amusing but they can also inspire, many archaeologists are indebted to Indy, as I read once "a terrible archaeologist but a great ambassador for archaeology," just as Jurassic Park influenced many to pursue a career in paleontology and a greater interest in prehistory.
P. D: I'm glad to know that Spielberg has a foundation to preserve the memory of the victims of the holocaust, and I love to hear that he is a family man.
I liked the temple of Doom
And I'm tired of pretending I don't.
It's my 2nd favorite! (Behind Raiders)
I love Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and I’m tired of pretending I don’t.
Temple of doom is good but crusade is definitely the best sequel and sometimes I even question wether or not it’s better than raiders sometimes
🎶We've only just begun. 🎶
Hot Take: now that I'm older I like Crystal Skull.
It's still the least interesting of the 4, but it's not far in quality or craft from the other 3 imo!
So proud of you man. Beautifully written and edited video. You've come a long way the past decade. Can't wait to see more!
Amazing as always Artoor!
Knowing the story about Spielberg's relationship with his father really touched me and made me love TLC even more. Thank you for the great work you always put into these essays.
Thanks, Parkes! I can't wait for the next one, and I'm always looking forward to your coverage of *Star Wars.*
I appreciate the support man. There may be a Star Wars or two on the way here in a few months 🤙
You mean you want him to make ... a sequel?!? That sounds perilous.
😱
There are only 4 Indiana Jones movies… The points you brought up about family, how Spielberg evolved as an artist over time, make that abundantly clear. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) may fall short in comparison to the OT, but The Dial of Destiny (2023) is just plain bad, and offers zero to the legacy of the character/franchise.
I enjoyed Crystal Skull at the cinema, it is, at least on the surface, as fun as the others but I've not rewatched it like I rewatched the others.
This is absolutely amazing, the editing and everything makes this feel so official and smooth. Incredible work!
I think it's partially worth noting that The Adventures of Tintin is really interesting as both a epilogue and reaction to the series (with Peter Jackson as the Lucas in a way).
this is honestly one of my favorite videos in general on the platform, and absolutely deserving of way more views.
Absolutely loved the video! I loved the Raiders of the Lost Ark video, and I am so excited to have finally gotten this video! I have always loved the Indiana Jones movies ever since I watched the original trilogy at the age of 9. I can honestly say that these movies have had a very large impact and influence on my life and my interest in film making. It’s been great seeing what you had to say about it!
Great work, but I have one minor criticism. Indy came around a golden box that shoot nazi killing lightning and had ghosts in it. He came around people, able to rip someone’s heart out without the victim dying. He came around a Cup granting eternal life (and one aging people to death in seconds). But the most unbelievable thing is a flying fridge…? Oo
It's honestly so imaginative that someone could even think of a scenario where someone escapes a nuke in a fridge. I laugh everytime I see it.
The lightning box, heart extraction, and eternal life cup were all supernatural. The invincible fridge wasn't. It's easier to accept a supernatural occurrence than something grounded yet implausible. Imagine a someone in a movie winning a coin flip 100 times in a row. It's much more believable if there's a magical force allowing him to win rather than him being obscenely lucky.
@@BlueGamingRage was the coin thing a reference to “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead!”?
@@nathanielhaven3453 It was not, but thank you for the recommendation
It was more the fact the fridge was the only debris that flew out of the area of the explosion.
Another solid, well done Artorr production. Each video outdoes it predecessor and while we must wait patiently between videos, we are always rewarded for our patience.
The sentiments of this video made me very happy. Your editing is off the chain, too.
These video essay releases are genuinely something I look forward to. Thank you ArTorr.
Fun fact about Temple of Doom’s opening song: it would later inspire “Da Hutt Moda” in The Clone Wars episode: “Hunt for Ziro”.
Temple of Doom is the gift that keeps on giving in animated Star Wars (the intro to Pabu in the Bad Batch was totally an Obi-Wan Nigjtclub homage).
Greatest video essay channel ever!!!! Please never stop making these!
Whoa happy to have found this channel. Phenomenal work. I’m subbed and can’t wait to watch more
Brilliant video essay on Indiana Jones and the sequels. You nailed exactly why I and my family love watching Kingdom of the Christa's skull, the family aspect. As you pointed out Las crusade was about Indian's dad while Kingdom was about Indian becoming a dad. I really hope dial carries that through, because I'm taking my family to go see it opening night.
Your essay has made this middle-aged film history buff very happy. An astonishing piece of work.
One of the best video essays I’ve ever watched on UA-cam. I’m currently recommending this to every friend that I know. Thanks so much for making this, from Indy fans everywhere!
- @IndianaJonesNews
It’s not often that I comment to say something like this. I have to say this is by far the best film retrospective video I have ever seen.
I’m not sure if he’s my favorite director, but I respect Spielberg like no one else in the business, in no small part because I see myself in him as a person, and obviously I love Indiana Jones.
This may be the only UA-cam video that has ever made me cry. It’s the first video of yours that I’ve seen and it’s an instant subscribe.
So glad you had the experience that you did with this video. Welcome to the channel and thank you for watching! 😃
This is a phenomenal documentary. Your hard work is extremely apparent!
Thank God for video essays like this! Going to work is so much easier when I can listen to stuff like this all day :) keep up the good work!
After I had just finished me Sunday movies videos on Indiana jones
you upload
The algorithm is truly blessed
Mr Sunday and I planned it of course 🙏 (we didn't)
I think the REAL reason people are worried about Dial of Destiny is because Disney is making it. And we all saw how the sequel trilogy went.
😔😔😔
"Indiana? Indiana. Let it go. " So beautiful.
You always put in the work on these !! Another great commentary!!!
I try. Thank you!!
Beautiful video! Thanks for making it! :)
Top class video essay. Good Commentary, nice use of the score in the storytelling too. Well done
Planned to listen to this while working, but it instantly felt like a cut above the usual video essays on UA-cam. The presentation was too engaging, so I found myself watching the whole thing with full attention. There's a level of polish and insight here that made it really engaging.
Very glad you enjoyed the video then, cheers and thank you for checking it out!!
I learn so much from all of these videos. The level of research that goes into these is just amazing. As always, hats off!
Wow. This fella nailed it. Well played Good Sir. I loved how you you really captured Spielberg’s personal journey. Very touching.😮
Thank you kindly for watching!!
ArTorr the King has Returns Great Videos Can't wait to watch it 🎉❤
Wow man fantastic video. ArTorr strikes again! Keep it up.
Absolutely brilliant video! I love Indiana Jones and I have great respect for Spielberg and his work. This was superbly researched and edited.
Thank you kindly sir 🙌
I never get tired of short rounds short roundhouse
Incredible work man! This video essay is one of the best I’ve ever seen
Good video. I don't get Crystal Skull haters, the advancement of technology (both practical and digital) happened in all of the Indiana Jones films. For example, Temple Of Doom used CGI stunt doubles when Thuggees fell off the bridge (except from Mola Ram). Crystal Skull mainly used practical effects for the nuke scene with some CGI enhancements to touch things up (CGY has a good video on this). Also each film has moments where it would be impossible for Indy to realistically survive, the funniest thing is that the nuke of all things is the one where he's most likely to survive.
Did you did amazing excellent job on this I honestly have no there are no words for this
An amazing docu-essay! Literally many Lucas' and Spielberg's work, whether produced or directed by either director in the 70s-90s was what most films aspired to be at the time. That really didnt change IMHO, until The Wachowskis.
Also as Columbo fan, one of my favorite episodes was directed by Steven Spielberg. And funny enough, there was an episode of Columbo later on, with a character named Steven Spellburg. LOL.❤
Subscribed!
Ha, that's an awesome fact about Columbo, did not know that. Thank you for watching!!
The dark tone of Temple of Doom was from George Lucas's Divorce, the heart getting ripped out was his way showing how he felt.
I know how much work these videos take, but please continue making them! I've shared them with my family and even co-workers not just because these films are so great, but because you do a great job in these video essays reminding us of all that! Thanks again.
Thank YOU for sharing the videos with all your folks. It means a lot! I'm doing my best to work on new videos, but it's been very tough this year with freelance work soaking up so much of my time. But rest assured, there will be more! Thanks for all the support 🤠
This is an incredible essay/documentary. You should be extremely proud, keep up the awesome work
The run time of this video had me putting off watching it as it repeatedly appeared in my recommended. I’m glad I committed to the first 10 minutes so I could sit and enjoy the rest. Really stellar work. Crazy how much The Fabelmans puts Spielberg’s work into a whole new perspective
Thank for your time then. I know the runtime is a big ask, but I always try to make it worthwhile. Fabelmans really changes the game for examining Spielberg's filmography in so many ways!
@@ArTorrPresents this was extremely well edited and insightful all throughout. You really blew it out of the water
You did it again, another engaging story told magnificently. Idk how you do it.
This channel is extremely underrated. These video essay are completely on another level.
Really phenomenal video essay. Looking forward to your channel gaining even more traction, it certainly deserves it.
Beautiful video essay as always. You continue to draw connections that I never would have considered.
I hope you get time to make a Jedi survivor video sometime in the near future
This is the perfect video to watch to gear up for Indy 5. You focus on how changes in Spielberg's personal life influenced how he approached the film series. It's also easy to forget how difficult shooting on location can be. The toll of constantly managing crises is reflected in the final product
This should have millions of views. U gave alot to this..😅 amazing
You've helped me see temple of doom in such a new way!! Thank you so much!
This was phenomenal from a great number of perspectives. Thank you.
I cannot put into words how impressed I am by your work. I'm so glad I found this video, and I have subscribed to your channel, Mr. Harman.
This is by far the best documentary (call it what you will, it is essentially a doc) that I have ever seen regarding Mr. Spielberg, and most definitely the best video essay/doc I've seen on youtube. It is so well done, so entertaining and informative, and so obviously done with care and intent. You've executed this with such craftsmanship that only a real filmmaker's mind could, even if you are only one at heart.
It's so good that I wish I had a copy of it in a pretty box to put on my display shelf with my other collected films, which includes the Indiana Jones films, of course.
Thank you for what you do, and thank you for this film, Mr. Harman.
Fantastic job!
Your comment made my day. Thank you for taking this video and embracing it wholly. It's the most I could ask for. Cheers 🤝
While I think Raiders is pretty much THE perfect movie, I have love for every single one of its sequels, yes even Crystal Skull. Not only for nostalgia sake, which is reason enough, but getting the chance to see a character from childhood to old age I think is non existant for any other character in film history. Love Indy and loved this video, thank you and you earned a new sub
One of the most professionally edited, narrated and thoughtful essays I’ve ever seen. Luckily I was fortunate enough to have seen The Raiders essay awhile before this video came out and I’m extremely excited for Dial Of Destiny.
I’m going to rewatch the first four films just before going to see Dial in theatres.
Great video! I didn't even realized it was over an hour long until the end 🤣
Superb production quality. Deserves to have millions of subs.
Hitting us with that staff of Kings menu/office music right off the bat? Alrighty then, solid choice.
That was great. Really well put together. Wetting my appetite for the next instalment of my favourite hero.
This was fantastic. Great retrospective!
The Lost World is not considered one of Spielberg's worst movies... It may not be E.T. or Jaws but it has its fans. It's just not considered as good as the original.
This video is so well done, deserves more attention!
This video is a work of art and passion.
These videos are always top notch! Can’t wait to see more!
Absolutely brillant vidéo, man! Very touching, humanitaire and profond! Keep up the good work ♡
Fantastic video as usual! Also I got so excited when I heard Ebon Flow start to play over the end credits hahaha. Found your channel through the Fallen Order video and would love to hear your take on Survivor!
Cheers! I actually still need to beat Survivor but I've enjoyed what little of it I've played so far so a video on it could definitely happen :)
Very good material, editing, pacing. Great freakin’ work!!
Dude this was fucking fantastic, love nothing more than a fantastic doc. Was not expecting this on UA-cam Dude!
I don't know what your thoughts are on it, but i would KILL for you to make a video on the Star Wars Sequels
One day!! I'm having a lot of fun talking about the SW shows right now, but certainly, the Sequels are on my radar. Also, nice seeing you here Gold, great content on your channel :)
Wow. I seldom use this: I was flabbergasted by this excellently produced video. You've got an enthusiastic new subscriber, dear sir!
This video almost made me cry. I was introduced to Indiana Jones as a kid when my dad had it playing in the background one day while we were cleaning the house. I couldn't stop watching, and he just let me. My first theatrical experience with Dr. Jones was with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For some, it's not the greatest Indiana Jones movie, and to me it's certainly not my favorite, but it holds a special place because it felt like my own slice of the legacy. I am looking forward to seeing this final piece in Harrison Ford's stride as the famed archeologist. Well done
That was me with Temple of Doom in the 80s. there's something about the inherent exaggeration of both entries that appeals to children. I objectively know that Raiders is the best entry, found Last Crusade somewhat forgettable but Temple of Doom will always be my Indy movie.
@@TimothyCHenderson after watching them all recently with my wife who hadn’t seen them, I found Crusade to be my favorite!? I’m not sure if it was because I watched it more, but something about the film really brought me back to the days of watching movies at my grandparents house. Back to the Future 2 does the same thing for me, but that’s a whole different story lol (which I just looked it up, BTTF 2, Crusade and a great list of other movies all came out in 1989) I was born in ‘98 so they’re almost 10 years older than me, and would’ve been almost 20 years old when I watched them for the first time but man alive, they’re fantastic films!!
you are just too good for us!
when is the Artorr video that delves into the daring development of Artorr.
you would make a video about the invention of calculus entertaining.
Funny how on one part you mention how Steven does his own myth making but this does a great job. Lol
Great job! Loved the Raiders video, love this one!
felt like a professional documentary hot diggity dog
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻
I appreciate the super thanks, much love!!
This was absolutely brilliant!! Thank you so much for all your hard work!!!!!
What a fantastic video, Incredibly well constructed and a joy to watch
Greetings, Respect and Much Love from Ireland
I gotta say I this has probably my favorite opening to any documentary iv ever seen. Time was the perfect song.
Loved your pacing in this video! The narrative you craft is really nice. Enjoyed this and the previous Indy video!
Thank you!!
10:43 - 11:34 AAARGH THIS FEELS SO GOOD, THAT THEME NEVER DISAPOINTS BAYBEEE
The production is immaculate dude. Keep it up!
Will do, thank you!
