Indiana Jones and the Perilous Art of The Sequel

  • Long before the Dial of Destiny, Jaws Director Steven Spielberg made Raiders of The Lost Ark for friend and Star Wars creator George Lucas in 1981... on the condition he'd also make an Indiana Jones trilogy. While Lucas was no stranger to sequels, Spielberg had never made one. Nor could he predict the exact, perilous adventure that Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, and even The Kingdom of Crystal Skull would take him on over the next 25 years of his career...

I really love how you delved deep into the personal significance and the journey that the filmmakers (especially Spielberg) were going through in their own personal lives while making these movies. As the big Indiana Jones fan that I am, I knew a lot of the behind-the-scenes details that you talked about, but the approach that you took really puts everything into a new perspective and helps to comprehend how our journey through life affects the art that we make. I didn't believe I could ever see my favorite movies and the stories of how they were made in a different way-a better, much deeper way-but you made it. Fantastic work, and I hope to experience little pieces of your own soul in everything that you make in the future.

I actually very nearly started working on a James Bond series like 2 years ago, whenever the last Craig film came out. Each video was going to focus on a different Bond actor. @@ArTorrPresents honestly it'd be great if you even just examined one actor's particular career, or also the insanity of the legal shit behind Bond which is always hinted towards but never really discussed (probably a bit boring tbf lol, still Never Say Never Again is insane and its backstory even more so). I mean the pair of Timothy Dalton films are so interesting to look at by themselves, or how easily we forget that John Glenn directed most of the Moore films, the same director yet each film very different too. Idk Bond is so much more rich for discussion than ppl think.

Raiders was my father's favorite movie, so as a young boy I watched it with him many many times. Last Crusade became my favorite, and has only gotten better as Ive grown older - Im sure due to the complicated father/son dynamic, and my being able to see it from different points in my life as I now have sons of my own. I never realized how much of a personal reflection that theme was for Spielberg. Thanks for this insight! Incredible essay.

The narration, the editing, the use of the music by John Williams, this is a masterpiece of video essays in UA-cam, Indiana Jones films are my favorite after Star Wars (though I remember liking Indy already since I watched bits of it as a kid, and I remember very well the commercial of Lego Indiana Jones when I played Lego Star Wars: the Complete Saga), this video acknowledges those who worked on the movies, I feel proud to know who the main members of the team are, Steven Spielberg was the first film director I ever heard of and he is still one of my favorite directors, he deserves win the Honorary Academy Award, I think George Lucas (maybe even Harrison Ford and John Williams) deserves one for their contributions to the film industry, I'm not from their generation but I grew up with those films and love them, if I have kids someday I will show them these movies, they can be amusing but they can also inspire, many archaeologists are indebted to Indy, as I read once "a terrible archaeologist but a great ambassador for archaeology," just as Jurassic Park influenced many to pursue a career in paleontology and a greater interest in prehistory.
    P. D: I'm glad to know that Spielberg has a foundation to preserve the memory of the victims of the holocaust, and I love to hear that he is a family man.

There are only 4 Indiana Jones movies… The points you brought up about family, how Spielberg evolved as an artist over time, make that abundantly clear. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) may fall short in comparison to the OT, but The Dial of Destiny (2023) is just plain bad, and offers zero to the legacy of the character/franchise.

Great work, but I have one minor criticism. Indy came around a golden box that shoot nazi killing lightning and had ghosts in it. He came around people, able to rip someone’s heart out without the victim dying. He came around a Cup granting eternal life (and one aging people to death in seconds). But the most unbelievable thing is a flying fridge…? Oo

    • @BlueGamingRage

The lightning box, heart extraction, and eternal life cup were all supernatural. The invincible fridge wasn't. It's easier to accept a supernatural occurrence than something grounded yet implausible. Imagine a someone in a movie winning a coin flip 100 times in a row. It's much more believable if there's a magical force allowing him to win rather than him being obscenely lucky.

Good video. I don't get Crystal Skull haters, the advancement of technology (both practical and digital) happened in all of the Indiana Jones films. For example, Temple Of Doom used CGI stunt doubles when Thuggees fell off the bridge (except from Mola Ram). Crystal Skull mainly used practical effects for the nuke scene with some CGI enhancements to touch things up (CGY has a good video on this). Also each film has moments where it would be impossible for Indy to realistically survive, the funniest thing is that the nuke of all things is the one where he's most likely to survive.

I cannot put into words how impressed I am by your work. I'm so glad I found this video, and I have subscribed to your channel, Mr. Harman.
This is by far the best documentary (call it what you will, it is essentially a doc) that I have ever seen regarding Mr. Spielberg, and most definitely the best video essay/doc I've seen on youtube. It is so well done, so entertaining and informative, and so obviously done with care and intent. You've executed this with such craftsmanship that only a real filmmaker's mind could, even if you are only one at heart.
It's so good that I wish I had a copy of it in a pretty box to put on my display shelf with my other collected films, which includes the Indiana Jones films, of course.
Thank you for what you do, and thank you for this film, Mr. Harman.
    Fantastic job!

While I think Raiders is pretty much THE perfect movie, I have love for every single one of its sequels, yes even Crystal Skull. Not only for nostalgia sake, which is reason enough, but getting the chance to see a character from childhood to old age I think is non existant for any other character in film history. Love Indy and loved this video, thank you and you earned a new sub

One of the most professionally edited, narrated and thoughtful essays I’ve ever seen. Luckily I was fortunate enough to have seen The Raiders essay awhile before this video came out and I’m extremely excited for Dial Of Destiny.
I’m going to rewatch the first four films just before going to see Dial in theatres.

The Lost World is not considered one of Spielberg's worst movies... It may not be E.T. or Jaws but it has its fans. It's just not considered as good as the original.

This video almost made me cry. I was introduced to Indiana Jones as a kid when my dad had it playing in the background one day while we were cleaning the house. I couldn't stop watching, and he just let me. My first theatrical experience with Dr. Jones was with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. For some, it's not the greatest Indiana Jones movie, and to me it's certainly not my favorite, but it holds a special place because it felt like my own slice of the legacy. I am looking forward to seeing this final piece in Harrison Ford's stride as the famed archeologist. Well done

That was me with Temple of Doom in the 80s. there's something about the inherent exaggeration of both entries that appeals to children. I objectively know that Raiders is the best entry, found Last Crusade somewhat forgettable but Temple of Doom will always be my Indy movie.

    • @dufrain_media
      @dufrain_media Рік тому

@@TimothyCHenderson after watching them all recently with my wife who hadn’t seen them, I found Crusade to be my favorite!? I’m not sure if it was because I watched it more, but something about the film really brought me back to the days of watching movies at my grandparents house. Back to the Future 2 does the same thing for me, but that’s a whole different story lol (which I just looked it up, BTTF 2, Crusade and a great list of other movies all came out in 1989) I was born in ‘98 so they’re almost 10 years older than me, and would’ve been almost 20 years old when I watched them for the first time but man alive, they’re fantastic films!!
