One thing for those worried about ghosting on the Boox device, you can set one of the buttons to full refresh on a long press. I set mine to do a full refresh if i press for 0.5 seconds on the next page button. So i can turn the page and refresh without having to move my finger.

The Boox sounds like the better option for me if I ever need to ditch the Kindle.

I had both, but ended up returning the Boox. I wanted to like the Boox more but found the screen darker than the Kobo, and the ghosting on apps such as Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe too much.

I honestly want to get the kobo Libra color but… most of the books i like are in amazon. If kobo had the option to read kindle books I would buy it in a heartbeat.

You can easily put any kindle / MOBI file on the kobo. You can convert them to epub or kepub with calibre

I don't know if it's possible without having ever owned a Kindle device, but if you do have a Kindle device linked to your Amazon account, stripping the DRM and moving the books to the Kobo is pretty straight forward. I recently switched from my ancient (seven years and counting) Oasis to a Libra Colour and moved all my unread Kindle books over without any issues.

    • @3choblast3r4
      @3choblast3r4 3 місяці тому

@mascot4950 protip, you're likely already using calibre. But instead of converting books to epub make them Kepubs. They work better with annotations and keep track of reading stats on kobo and have some other functionalities, like scrolling pages etc

@@zelrey7631 Yes you are able to get kindle books to the Libra but it’s a little bit of work. Still well worth it. Loving my Kobo.

Awesome, I’ve seen Boox devices around recently and have been really curious! I’ve been thinking about moving away from Amazon affiliated devices, but was worried about what would happen to my kindle library if I did. The Boox is super versatile! I think I’ll eventually be picking one of those up once my kindle kicks the bucket

Nitpick: The Boox Go Color 7 has 64 GB of internal storage but just like the Kobo Libra Colour, part of it is reserved for the OS, so they have about the same usable space left.
I personally got the Boox Go Color 7 as a replacement for my ancient SONY Reader™ PRS-T1 thinking that it should be an improvement in every way because even if due to the colour layer it's not as bright as non-colour e-ink displays, it surely would be whiter than the PRS-T1. I was wrong. Sure, at least it has a frontlight to compensate for that but that takes more energy.
Lastly, I chose the Boox Go Color 7 because I want that form factor but still be able to put it in my pocket if need be. On the other hand, the Kobo Libra Colour is better to hold, with the space between the two buttons, to put your thumb there.

Heads up for those wanting the Boox Go 7. Bought on strength of this and other positive reviews only to find that USB C sideload is crippled and bugged. The PC does not see the device. Sending feedback gets you an automated response that does not help. The help files are a lie.
EDIT: I have not tried this yet, but it is not like the Kindle which gets put in USB drive mode. It seems Right click Send To does show the Boox 7, but I have not tried this yet and do not know where the files end up: Downloads, Books or somewhere else. But if you do not see your Boox as a drive try the Right Click Send To option and see how it goes.

I would recommend Calibre for that. Makes it pain-free (except for one thing that tripped me up: you need to configure the device in Calibre to allow other file formats like cbz if you want to copy them over).

Thank you for the review. I purchased both the Libra Colour and the Go Color 7 but returned the Boox reader because the ghosting was really terrible while reading. Libra reading experience is much better imo. Also was very concerned that the Boox is running quite an old version of Android which will cease to be supported in the near future.

I have the Kobo Libra H20. And I absolutely love it, but feel like it's time for an upgrade. Not sure with the color though, hoping they release a libra 3 / bw. Or that they release a black and white 8" device. The Clara is so old, I don't want to get that and have them release a new one for the exact same price a month later (happened to me with the libra h20). I also just want better hardware for these ridiculous prices. I don't want to spend a premium on a clara which will likely be slower by every metric compared to the libra color. But I also don't really want the color, because I will barely ever use anything with color. I don't read comics and the one time I tried on my libra h20 (Berserk) I felt the screen was just too small and zooming is slow and annoying. So, it's really nice to have color covers and colored images for the very very rare occasions that ebooks contain those. But it's not worth having the screen being darker so you always have to use the light. And the letters being fuzzier because of the color filter. (that said, basically always use the light with my ereader anyway)

I went for the Boox as I already have a Supernote for note taking (never liked annotating directly in my books anyway) and the prospect of installing other text based apps like Guitar tabs or using my New York Times or Marvel Unlimited subscription right in an e-ink screen sounded so good to pass on.
I know color e-ink is not completely there yet but I’m open to trying something new while waiting for the rumored color kindle with the new color e-ink technology. Then I can just play it safe and get that kindle as a spiritual successor to my 2017 Paperwhite.
So excited to get my Boox later this week, great video summing up the differences between these two.

I was debating the mini c and the go color. In the end, I've settled on the GO cause I read in bed and having those buttons is crucial. I also doubt I'd be writing on eink vs an iPad.
I also just like the design better over the Kobo. More...subtle, I suppose.

With the Boox running Android 12 which is oldest Android OS around and reaching end of life, will it support update to new OS? Seriously considered Boox but decided having "apps" on my ereader would be too distracting and defeat the reason I use an ereader - to escape (email/text/games/you name it). Kobo Libra Colour all the way for me as I can sideload and still read an occasional Amazon book by using Calibre.

I'm not keen on the assymetrical design. I loved my original Kindle, which had the page turn buttons on both sides, which meant I could periodically switch hands when one got tired, and it was easy to page forward, or back with the thumb of whichever hand I held it in. I really miss that.
