Before Star Wars, before Battlestar Galactica, there was Uchuu Senkan Yamato. It is THE classic televised space opera. Folks accustomed to slick studio-produced translations (which may still insert their own quirks or flaws) should bear in mind this show was localized on a relatively small budget. The actors did a good job with the scripts they were given, and the animation was not too badly hampered by the strange editing rules of the 70s.
