This scene, where the Yamato is orbiting the Comet Empire City and just bringing down the rain had me leaping for joy as a child. It was so good to see that smack down at age 10 and is still enjoyable at 52. What a great show. Be well each of you.
I watched this as a kid as well. My dad got us a subscription so we could watch the first 2 seasons. I'm in high school now, but this is still a great show. I even rematched it once or twice going through cancer because it's so good.
Yes, Howard, In 1980, even back then to today, that was a STUPID comment; there's NO WAY he got out, ---furthermore, in futcher episodes, you see "Knoxes" Statue" on display, forget what episodes they were,----But IT'S CLEAR--He DID NOT GET OUT, NO WAY.
And Conroy died solely because he defended his fighter until the bitter end to give his captain and shipmates time to get back. Once Knox made his decision, Knox was either going to succeed or not, and nothing Conroy or Derek/Kodai could influence that. Conroy could have left, Knox succeeds, and anyone left in command could order the attack to finish the Comet Empire. But Conroy stayed.

This was the best anime series, EVER! The writing in both seasons was spectacular and this was a tight knit crew that been the the worst of times together! But in season two, the Star Force did more damage to The Comet Empire, single handedly, than the whole Earth defense fleet! They wiped out three fleets on their way to Telezart, knocked out their invading on on that planet, took out their resupply depot on the captured planet Brumus, then the surprise attack that wiped out their carrier fleet, then destroyed the main citadel of The Comet Empire, if they had their wave motion gun, that dreadnought would have been history as well! But the Star Force truly put a hurting on them! But the beginning of this episode where they chase them back into space was one of the most emotional moments of the entire series! Everything was perfect with that especially the music score and the way you saw the Argo's fighters fall in behind her, still makes both well up and cheer at the same time!! No movie captured an emotional, symbolic hopes of the planet on one crew like that moment! BEST IN HISTORY, in my honest opinion!!
YES, it was!, It's a MIRICLE The ARGO was not Destroyed, with all Zordars Gun Torrent's, not to mention Zordar could have used the MAIN GUN, one blast would have destroyed the Argo...
one of the greatest cartoon series I had EVER seen! Thank the Lord they never showed on TV the horrible 3rd season on US tv. The first 2 seasons were the bomb!
I also like the Bolar Wars and all the concurrent movies that came after. But no one topped the Comet Empire as an enemy in this series. They're one of the greatest of all time, in any sci-fi genre.
I am sooo glad as a youngster I wasn't traumatized by Knox's and Conroy's heroic sacrifices. Just terrible that I might have learned sacrificing oneself to save your friends, fellow crew, your captain, and the human SPECIES from intergalactic evil is a great way to check out. I LOVE and MISS this cartoon!! I used to watch it while growing up in the late 1970's/early 1980's. I'd run home from school, grab a snack, and plop myself in front of the TV to watch it. God, I miss being a kid. We had the absolute best cartoons back then. Honorable mention... 4:20 to 5:20 = Absolutely f*cking EPIC!!! 8-D

For some reason, I always loved the POV shot at 4:50 ... you're sitting in one of the skyscrapers in the Comet Empire City, watching this Terran ship majestically flying by, shooting right at your city. I'd have loved to see this shot rendered with the animation technology used in 2202, but the redesign of the Comet Empire doesn't really allow for it ...
Well, harlockmbb, I have ALL 52 Episodes, from Voyager Entertainment, on DVD, I bought online in 2003, I've seen EVERY Episode, when it was on TV, from 1979 thru the 1990's, Wildstar did NOT die in this Episode, unless the US changed the Japanese Version,...
I didn't know till years later that Knox and Conroy didn't make it. It was edited using English dubbing to make it seem like they had survived. Even then as a kid I was like there was no way Knox survived, he blew himself up. And Conroy takes one too, they cut that scene out as well. And Prince Zordar closes the door on his top generals and Grand daughter. That part was savage, too savage to show characters dying in a kids cartoon.
I remember seeing this as a kid, feeling delight at seeing the previously invincible Comet Empire get their @$$ kicked -- and then losing it when that last ship appeared. "Oh my gosh, THEY'VE STILL GOT ONE LAST SHIP??" And did they ever say just /why/ the Comet Empire attacked Earth? Were we a threat, was it for gits and shiggles, or what?
In the first episode of the season, Zordar said he wanted to conquer Earth and make it part of his Empire. He admired the Earth people's ability to completely restore the world in just one year after the Gamilon radiation bombing. People like that would be valuable subjects.
If nothing was said about Knox getting out the edited version would be palatable. But what happened to Conroy? You don't even see Conroy getting shot in the original version yet one moment he's fine then next he's mortally wounded. Certainly redoing series 1 ^ 2 with live actors, CGI graphics, restored violent scenes from the original version, grittier storylines, etc., would kick ass (just as been said with the remade Battlestar Galactica series).
So Prince Zordar has another super space fortress tucked in there, that nobody noticed. I’m all for sci fi and suspension of disbelief, but just like my 11 year old self knew that “Knox got out behind you” was BS, I knew this was BS as well. When they blew up the energy center, fully a 1/4 of the Comet Empire suffered catastrophic damage. Then the Argo puts another beating on them. Yeah, there’s no way Prince Zordar has his own undamaged version of the SDF-1 tucked away in there. My 11 year old self was a little pissed about it. I guess still am over 4 decades later. 😎✌️

Considering that the series this was translated from, "Space Battleship Yamato", first premiered in 1974, a full three years before Star Wars, the question you should be asking is, "Why does Star Wars look so much like it?"
Its obvious George Lucas copied so many ideas from this show .example both shows using the enemies garbage facilities..i can imagine Mr Lucas taking many notes
I haven’t seen this in 40+ years, but I seem to remember a scene where all the earth cruisers fired their wave motion guns at the same time at the comet empire. The middle ring spun around and made a force field that repelled all the attacks. The fact that I remember this and not important stuff from school should serve as a warning to all kids.
I enjoyed this cartoon of course, it's absolutely fantastic, but a little side note: what was always interesting to me was that the Zordar called himself Prince. You think he would give himself like a higher title like at least Baron or Duke or something like that, I mean Desslok was arrogant enough to call himself "Supreme Leader", it just seems like Prince is a little low title for the ruler of the entire empire...
@@michaelrehm Uh, ok, first off it came out in 1978 originally. Secondly anime is a form of Eastern animation, i.e., a cartoon--it's a Japanese cartoon, it's not a different genre. Thirdly, I'm old enough that I remember actually watching it not downloading it from GoGo Anime, stop flexing.
Knox went out like a badass. The soldiers shot him several times while he was setting the explosives. He kept setting them while saying "please don't hit my heart."

In the Japanese version, Conroy dies after they land back on the Argo and Knox doesn’t get out.
Knox DID NOT get out, that was Obvious.... He set off the Bombs as the enemy Gards came shooting at him, he had no Chance, sadly..

this is TV version of Yamato 2. sounds so bad in english..i´m sorry but it is coz i used watch it every week when i was kid, cinema version is called Saraba Uchu Senkan Yamato and it´s the best.

I haven’t seen this in 40+ years, but I seem to remember a scene where all the earth cruisers fired their wave motion guns at the same time at the comet empire. The middle ring spun around and made a force field that repelled all the attacks. The fact that I remember this and not important stuff from school should serve as a warning to all kids.

I enjoyed this cartoon of course, it's absolutely fantastic, but a little side note: what was always interesting to me was that the Zordar called himself Prince. You think he would give himself like a higher title like at least Baron or Duke or something like that, I mean Desslok was arrogant enough to call himself "Supreme Leader", it just seems like Prince is a little low title for the ruler of the entire empire...
In the Japanese version, Zordar was Emperor and Invidia was his mistress, not daughter.

@@michaelrehm Uh, ok, first off it came out in 1978 originally. Secondly anime is a form of Eastern animation, i.e., a cartoon--it's a Japanese cartoon, it's not a different genre. Thirdly, I'm old enough that I remember actually watching it not downloading it from GoGo Anime, stop flexing.
