I love your teachings through experiments.

I suggest you choose carefully to remove a limited number of leaves to allow the sun's rays to penetrate the center of the tree.
    Good luck.

      Hello!
Thanks, good idea! Maybe I will try this method. By the way, Japanese fig growers remove some of the lower leaves on the shoots. This probably improves the presentation of figs. There is a version that the lower leaves "produce less than they consume" as they age. So let's start from the bottom!

Wonderful growth since your previous pruning video when everything was dormant. The protective cloth you use, is it for birds and critters, or do you use it as a shade cloth? My potted fig trees are in the open sun, but I still have to deal with the squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and birds, which is a pain. Looks like you're going to have a very nice crop this season. Thanks for the update.

Hello and thanks for your comment!
I use "17 mesh" agricultural netting. It keeps out insects (in Israel, several types of fruit flies can destroy crops) and birds. It gives a slight shading, but for figs this is more of a minus than a plus.
I talked about this mesh in detail in a video about growing organic figs. The mesh is strong and durable, it has been serving me for the third year.

@@figsinisrael1043 Thanks for the explanation. I agree that a more established fig tree doesn't need sun protection. I do use shade cloth for my young fig cuttings that are in 5 gal pots, and transition them into full sun over time. Once it heats up, I put my tomato garden under 50% shade cloth as the flowers tend to burn and shrivel up in full sun at the height of the summer (105-108 degrees). I would still get tomatoes, but with the shade cloth my yield is better, and the tomatoes don't develop burn spots. Enjoy those figs!

@@neurocognitive Yes, that's right. After transplanting, I also keep rooted fig cuttings in the shade for a couple of weeks. As for tomatoes, this idea never crossed my mind. Thanks, I'll try now!

@@figsinisrael1043 It definitely made a difference with my tomatoes. I generally grow 3 types - Early Girls, Better Boys, and Brandy Wine Heirlooms. This year I also added Black Crim to the mix. Nothing better than a homegrown tomato.

@@neurocognitive I don't understand anything about tomatoes. Usually I buy ready-made seedlings from nurseries without specifying the variety (in Israel this is almost always the case). Sometimes they grow well, sometimes they don't.. But trying to shade is interesting!
