In 2002 it was a normal English word for women who never married though. I think it is just one of those words we don't use so much. We tend not to use th e proper legal term in 2023 eg for children born out of wedlock - bastard either. Times change

I think it’s a great word and has only been associated with unattractive women left on the shelf by people in the past. The fear of being vulnerable and alone in eras past that didn’t have the benefits system sought to discourage women from going it alone.
We should own this title, people keep saying how ok it is to be single so own it.

Spinster used to be a description for independently wealthy women, who had no need to marry to afford housing or living in general. Spinning brought a high price so their wages were traditionally higher than most men's.

I don't get a positive vibe from Alfred. As well as his demeanor, he also said some questionable things. For example when describing his relief at being told the police had at last found a motive for murder (the life insurance) he said he was happy at last - for the police and... (I was expecting him to say for justice for Joan)... and for himself, but never even referred to Joan. At the end of the video he said he was glad the financial advisor was no longer able to target people like Joan who are "gullible" and alone - placing the onus on her alleged gullibility as being partly to blame for her murder. I thought it a cold and detached thing to say in such circumstances. Instead I was expecting the word "vulnerable" which would have kept 100% of the blame on the murderer. And finally you have to ask why she moved away from them if she thought so highly of them. The story about her moving away in memory of her uncle has to have come from them and, to be frank, it sounds like a nonsense reason. Sorry but I'm not convinced by him whatsoever.

I'm confused on how you can take out a life insurance policy on 1. Someone you're not related to, and 2. Why these insurance companies don't notify the individual that a policy has been taken out against them
So many true crime stories have involved life insurance policies and people being unaware. You would think that companies would make it mandatory to notify the person 🙄 literally all it would take is 5 minutes..."Hi my name is Susy from ABC Insurance. Are you aware and consenting that Mr. X has taken out a life insurance policy on you for 1 million dollars?"

And I can just IMAGINE the stories he told Joan about how he was so unhappy with his wife who didn't understand him, how he had nothing to do with her for ages, how that marriage was over long time ago, how it has been only formal and how they lived separate lives, how he was so lost and empty and resigned to spend the rest of his life without love, how lonely and hopeless he felt, but then, when he met Joan, he felt happy again, how he was going to divorce his wife the moment Joan moved close to him, how they would use all her money to start a new life, how blissfully happy they'll be, how grateful he felt to have met her, how she had transformed his life, how the divorce was now just a quick formality and then he'd marry Joan and they'll live happily ever after, bla, bla, bla...

And, if you study the Word of God (from God, and not from men, just as it is infallibly promised of all the truly Godly - eg. She kept flunking and he took her three times. We starting questioning what was going on. None of the kids in the family lived near our mother. She was in her late 80's and she kept going on how sweet he was to help her. We starting investigating and found out he needed her to have a drivers license to get into these risky investments. She also wrote him and he cashed a personal check to him for 1000.00 US dollars because he was so sweet. My brother and sister flew out and paid a visit and told him we were going to the government to turn him in for fraud. He lost over 40,000 dollars of her wealth and she had no idea. We took over everything and tried to help her get back on her feet. Nothing happened to him because she signed a disclaimer, she didnt know, that investments are risky and she could lose money. WHAT A JERK I wonder how many other vulnerable old ladies that he took advantage of took their Monday? I've been a widow since 1998 and believe me there have been many many people who have taken advantage of me and I should have known better. But believe me I do now and I hope that I never get taken again. Like my mom used to say Lord willing and the creek don't rise

But if you wear a suit & drive a Mercedes or bmw, you must be a "good person"...LOL!

I cannot see any online updates so hopefully he remains in jail or being now in his 80s died in jail. Unfortunately quite bright people taken in by scammers find it so hard to accept that their family is often the last to be told as they are embarrassed. I hope the family was able to force the killer's wife to sell the family home to pay the £250,000 owed to the estate of Joan and also a sum for damages in a civil case.
