I actually think I See The Light starting with their thoughts and ending with them singing to each other makes it much more impactful than compared to if they sang out loud at the start. If they were singing out loud from the start, I don't think it would have worked as well because the first half is about Rapunzel having her moment with the lanterns. The slow and steady introspection of their feelings toward each other as the excitement dies down from seeing the lights in person and then them turning around to see each other there as a permanent and not a temporary like the lights are really fits the song's theme. When they turn to look at each other, they see THE light, not the literal lights. The moment they start singing out loud reflects that transition. I remember how amazing it was to watch that in the theater and how heartfelt it was when they held hands and unexpectedly started singing to each other. It was such a satisfying moment!

"Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction." Antoine de Saint-Exupery. A Whole New World is the perfect embodiment of this quote.
"I see the Light" ALSO is a love song that shows the main character experiencing their dream through the love interest. Rapunzel had always wanted to see the lanterns and leave her castle. Flynn helped her do that the same way Aladdin helped Jasmine leave her palace and see the world. Edit: I also wanted to add that Schaff's critique of most love songs being "they don't sing to each other" not very stable because that's what makes it so romantic, if you notice the way Flynn looks at Rapunzel when she's singing, he's realizing how much he's fallen for her. It's a beautiful moment. They both sing in their heads at first because they're going over their experiences and at the end of the song they're finally ready to share it with each other and duet which symbolizes them coming together in love. A Whole New World doesn't have that raw moment of love, it's more about Jasmine getting what she wants out of Aladdin. With I see the Light, Rapunzel and Flynn both have what they want in the end and come to realize it as they sing together. Edit #2: wow this comment blew up! Thanks for the likes guys, I hope Schaff will see this because I wanna know what he thinks lol
I see the light is easily my favorite Disney song and scene and you explained it perfectly here. I see the light is the realization of love which I think is a lot more magical than just talking about being in love. And on top of that the lanterns and the way rapunzel and flynn look at each other and everything about it makes it the perfect scene. Another great scene that doesn’t actually have singing from it is the kingdom dance. As the song/scene progresses thing get more high energy and more tense and just everything in it is great. You can truly see the feelings building up between the two characters. Sad Disney hasn’t been able to pull that kind of thing off in almost a decade.

The point for Eugene and Rapunzel singing in their heads shows us that they haven't really admitted to each other nor themselves their feelings for each other and it's only towards the end of the song that they've fully come to terms with their feelings, which is represented with them singing to each other out loud. During the song, more and more lanterns surround them, showing more and more light around them. At the start of the song, it's very dark and their singing quietly in their heads, but by the end of the song, there's so many lanterns providing light around them and they're singing to each other out loud.
I like how he didn't even talk about the visuals, even though they are glorious too. Not quite as good as the visuals of Hellfire, or Poor Unfortunate Souls, but it still looks gorgeous.
You can’t overlook Once Upon a Dream. Their duet is both classic and magical. It conveys the innocence and purity of young love. The animation, voice, and music swells so beautifully. I know if you’re petty political you may disagree but it’s a reflection of the time period. It is truly a classic
I swear you're psychic. I was just watching the Aladdin remake yesterday and I was literally waiting for the A Whole New World song. I'll admit it, it was pretty good but just like most of the movie, it lacked the magic and fluidity that the original had. The original scene was beautiful, stirred my heart and made me cry when I watched it again recently. It kinda made me miss the hand drawn 2D animations because of how much expression they had. It truly was amazing. Thank you for pointing out how the incredible it was and how it was butched by that DAMN REMAKE. PS: Flying Carpet Is Best Character!
Live action Aladdin was good, especially since they changed up the plot a bit, but dear lord, live action Jafar was horrible! They coulda dressed a baked potato with Jafar's snake staff stuck through it, and it woulda performed better!! Also live action Aladdin was awkward as heck; he seemed to have more chemistry with Will Smith as Genie than he did with Jasmine...
Aladdin's been my fave since I was a kid, and this scene always melts my heart. Between the music and the way they look at each other, it's just so sweet and pretty much sells me immediately on how much they care about each other.
Nobody asked but there's a parody of this song in Hebrew where Jasmine and Aladin are fighting and it's absolute fire, featuring lines such as Aladin: look, horses! Jasmine: oh lovely, horses Aladin: just don't touch them Jasmine: I touched the white one
Also, the song mimics Jasmin's emotions (excitement), not Aladdin's (calm). This way we identify with Jasmin throughout the song and end up just as thankful to Aladdin as she does
I think this is why this song stuck with me as a kid. It's not solely about romance, but more about going beyond your boundaries, being adventurous, and seeking the magic that lies within the world around us. The visuals, the fast pace animation, the singing, all of that gives me a such a thrill that no other disney song can replicate (Well, except for the songs in Tarzan by Phil Collins. Those are marvelous~) I agree, this is definitely the best disney song.
Look, I'm a huge Tangled fan so I came here almost expecting my favorite duet to be said is not that great(a lot of people say the song itself is subpar and the visuals are the ONLY impressive part) but not only did you acknowledge it, you honest to God actually called him Eugene. This is why I love your channel
he didnt even say that its not great in any way. He even acknowedge that beautiful moment.... imo icthelight and wholenew world are equally good if u take the songs out of the movie.
Do most people familiar with Tangled really think the song isn’t that good? That’s odd to me if that many people think that because it’s a lovely melody that greatly sets the mood for that scene.
It's funny, cause the greatest love song from Disney has three active participants. Aladdin and Jasmine are obvious, but it's easy to forget that the Carpet is sentient, and is actively shaping things in the song as well.
At some point he'd teased a potential video titled "Why Twisted is Lowkey Better Than Aladdin". Still waiting on that, I want it more than anything, lol.
The points you make is one of the reasons I love 'I See The Light' in Tangled! To me it balances the sweetness of new love with showing the audience the moment their new wants/desires become clear to them, whilst also being just a great pun on the whole lantern thing
“Aladdin gives her actually what she wanted; not romance....but adventure” My heart melted the moment you said that 😭😭 AND ITS SO TRUE. That’s why Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie/ prince/ princess/ etc. and that’s also why i just could not fall in love with the remake. Don’t get me wrong it had heart, but the animated version has soul ❤️❤️
2:59 no, can you feel the love tonight is literally about what's going on inside Simba and Nala's heads and how they want to grow closer despite how there's a bit of emotional distance between them
Exactly. It’s about how they finally reuniting seems so meant to be and a glimmer of hope in the middle of absolute chaos, wanting to be together and seeing each other differently, but at the same time he’s scared to talk about his past and hurt her and she knows he’s hiding something and doesn’t know what and why. You can’t write a love song about Simba and Nala at that point in the story and avoid that huge conflict.
@@morseeinhd9898Both Simba and Nala (not Mama) sing their respective parts, though. Who cares if their mouths are not moving on screen. They’re singing what they’re literally thinking at that moment.

Your script is very incredible and eye opening. All of your scripts in all of your videos. They're convincing and back up what you say. All your videos are 100/10
I started this video thinking it’d be just another fun video by my boy Schaffrillas but ended up actually learning a whole lot. I’m working on a semi musical show rn and this gave me so much inspiration to go beyond what the usual love duet aims for
I love all of the Twisted references in this comment section lmao. I honestly can't remember how A Whole New World goes because my memories of it have been flooded with "look, that priest has a *boner"*
okay but commenting on how schaffrillas totally undermined "i see the light" because they didn't sing together until the end ergo doesn't have much connection between the two because that wASN'T THE POINT OF THE SONG- the whole point of "i see the light" is an inspection of what the two characters thought was their dream and realizing what their dream really is. it's literally in the title. they have to think it through to realize it because you can't just jump into love and dreams without thinking it through. there's also the VERY IMPORTANT MOMENT before the song where rapunzel asks what happens if her dream is fulfilled and eugene replies with "finding a new one". this. THIS is what the song is about. rapunzel's verse is her finally getting the dream, relishing it, and enjoying it on her own. for the first part, she's enjoying the view separate of eugene and was quiet about it. eugene's verse is all about realizing how shallow his dream of riches and isolation is. THE DUET? THE DUET IS THEM ADDRESSING THE REALIZATION. they're not talking about the lanterns or riches anymore. they're telling each other that THE OTHER IS THE LIGHT. that they are each other's new dream. something they wouldn't have realized over conversation. they had to think it through because dreams are PERSONAL BEFORE you tell and share them. context is key with love songs that are specific to two characters. "a whole new world" is about giving what someone wanted, "i see the light" is REALIZING that the thing they truly want most was not the view, not the lanterns, but EACH. OTHER. AND TO SHARE THEIR DREAMS. TOGETHER. don't talk down on "i see the light again" owo (jk man. love your videos XD)
That one cut song in Pocahontas " If I never knew you" Her anf John Smith did a duet yo. Disney cut it out butttttt it still counts right? That song talks about what they see in each other, I think.
Schaffrillas, my man! Your video essays are always well-thought out, but this one takes the cake. You put into eloquent words how I felt about this song. Thank you so much!
So... It's a romance-I want song...? Seriously though, I totally agree with you. I have a distinct memory from high school where a class I was in was using parts of "Aladdin" to teach English, since it was a popular film. We were using the balcony scene at the time, and the teacher stopped it right before the song started (like literally right at the end of the crescendo, cutting off right before they actually sing) and the entire class went absolutely NUTS. We got to hear the song in the next class, but just the complete and utter shared outrage and disappointment at initially not getting to hear this fantastic song was kind of hilarious looking back on it. SO I can safely say that probably my entire English class would agree on you with this one. ;)
Wow… I grew up with this movie, I’ve seen it countless times, I’m able to sing along with the lyrics off memory… And yet I never once even bothered to try to realise and understand the meaning of its lyrics/music/tempo, and their related underlying purposes in expression. Fascinating. Thank you
What about, "If I Never Knew You" from Pocahontas? Yes, I know it was cut from the film, but it's on one of the DVD re-releases and I would argue that it's better than "A Whole New World".
I think it doesnt count because its cut. Same for "someday" and "Place of Miracles" in hunchback. In the stage musical, Someday is a tragic love song about how the characters (Pheobus and Esmerelda) have decided to basically die together the next day because the worlds so broken and they cant fix it. Place of Miracles is lovely too but oof, the fact Frollo 'wins' right after is heartbreaking too.
I also think we need to credit the amazing vocals of Brad Kane and Lea Salonga. They made this song come to life in a way that captures the magic of the lyrics and the scene at heart.
Hey schaff, can you do a video about Rango (2011) please? I know you talked briefly about it in your academy award winners video, but it’s one of my favourite animated films and I would really like a review of it by you. Thank you!

Schaffrilas: there aren’t any romantic duets in Disney aside from a whole new world and rapunzel

Poo Nunkin from nightmare before Christmas
"Can you feel the love tonigh?": But-
Nightmare Before Christmas debatably wasn't originally a Disney movie.
I can't stand the new movies every remake is just so soulless these movies are clearly made for people who think realistic makes stuff better.

"Why does God sound like Phil Collins?"
You just answered your own question bro.

Do most people familiar with Tangled really think the song isn’t that good? That’s odd to me if that many people think that because it’s a lovely melody that greatly sets the mood for that scene.
It's funny, cause the greatest love song from Disney has three active participants. Aladdin and Jasmine are obvious, but it's easy to forget that the Carpet is sentient, and is actively shaping things in the song as well.
Can you analyze Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizir?
It’s a Disney parody musical but it’s really good

2:59 no, can you feel the love tonight is literally about what's going on inside Simba and Nala's heads and how they want to grow closer despite how there's a bit of emotional distance between them
Exactly. It’s about how they finally reuniting seems so meant to be and a glimmer of hope in the middle of absolute chaos, wanting to be together and seeing each other differently, but at the same time he’s scared to talk about his past and hurt her and she knows he’s hiding something and doesn’t know what and why. Conclusion: "and at last I see the lights" is default Best Love song I fucking love that movie
okay but commenting on how schaffrillas totally undermined "i see the light" because they didn't sing together until the end ergo doesn't have much connection between the two because that wASN'T THE POINT OF THE SONG-
the whole point of "i see the light" is an inspection of what the two characters thought was their dream and realizing what their dream really is. it's literally in the title. they have to think it through to realize it because you can't just jump into love and dreams without thinking it through. there's also the VERY IMPORTANT MOMENT before the song where rapunzel asks what happens if her dream is fulfilled and eugene replies with "finding a new one".
TOGETHER.
don't talk down on "i see the light again" owo
(jk man. love your videos XD)
That one cut song in Pocahontas " If I never knew you" Her anf John Smith did a duet yo. Disney cut it out butttttt it still counts right? That song talks about what they see in each other, I think.

Thank you
That’s an odd way to spell “Shiny” and praise the song as the best whilst speaking of another song.

I commented this haha I love that song so much and was sad it was cut.
To me the runs with the strings and high winds add sooo much bc it sounds playful and bright, also it it adds to the feeling of flying and soaring
Thank you schaffrillas you’ve opened my eyes to a whole new world of music
Glad to see this video being made tho
I also think we need to credit the amazing vocals of Brad Kane and Lea Salonga. They made this song come to life in a way that captures the magic of the lyrics and the scene at heart.
