Words from a national team club coach: Tuck you chin down more. You want the water to roll over the top of your head instead of splitting and breaking the surface tension, which will cause it to push the water instead of glide through the water just under the surface... Tighten your core to reduce the banana shape in your back. That’ll make your position more flat like a plank on the surface. That should also help you not have to reach up so far for that breath... You’re treating your up kick basically like a reset for your next downkick. You need to generate more power from your with your lower back and push those hips down more to create the motion of a bullwhip... Theres a pause between your last dolphin kick and the start of your flutter kick. Either make it more seamless or do one more dolphin kick as you’re breaking out... Your first 2-3 strokes of each breakout should spin more and be less bouncy to help you flatten out sooner, that way you can settle back down into your tempo without having to plane out still... Your feet are hitting the wall at 45 degrees instead of straight up and down, so make sure your feet come straight over the top and hit the wall at 90 degrees. Push off on your back and kick out while turning over onto your stomach... Other than that, you have a good technique and tempo for sub-minute 100 pace!

Although several coaches have stated that my technique is "really not bad at all", I just can't seem raise the speed. Some things that have helped me take seconds off of my 50 and 100... One is learning to fire off the wall and have a stronger dolphin kick. Two is more, as I call them 'long and strong' laps, which is like the Arrow Freestyle with long glide and power rotation. It makes my abs sore when I do a lot of sets. Three is 'high octane' laps, 25 and 50's at full speed and high rpm/stroke count. Four is 200 yard sets on short intervals. Broke 40 seconds on my 50 side stroke last week, and got my 100 down to 1:26. For some reason, my freestyle times haven't dropped in 10 years. Maybe not reading the clock right.... Drop 30 pounds and keep training, and I hope to get the side stroke down to 1:10 or less..... Not bad for being 69....

Chris Z if you’ve been swimming for that long you should be faster. I assume your technique needs work. I got to 53 after 4 years of swimming. Try to put some muscle on that helps. Also, do 100 m repeats on a 2 minute interval. That’s a really good workout for speed.
@@Libtardo123 I was at 31s for 50 meters when I was like 12. I am at like 29s for 50m now at 27. Think that's a small improvement? Well, I didn't swim at all for the 15 years in between.
YSFmemories if you didn’t swim for 15 years you’re basically starting from scratch. But 29 seconds is really good for someone with little experience. I don’t know how good of shape you’re in but getting a private swim coach or doing group lessons will help with technique. If you can only do one exercise outside of the pool I’d do pull-ups. That’ll make you a lot faster.
@@Libtardo123 Thanks. What I was trying to say is that the other guy might be the same; maybe he just didn't swim all those years. Haven't gotten back to this one for a week or two, mostly checking in to see the comments about helping you get faster. I think I will stick with a comment some one else made about having a faster stroke rate. I checked out several videos on short course 100s. Seemed like they were doing about 10 arm cycles per length of the pool, and I think you were at 8 on your last length. Probably the biggest single thing I would suggest. I am working with a Master's coach, who is telling me to get in a couple of work outs per week where I do 5 X 200 sets with short rest intervals, which amounts to swimming at a higher level for a longer distance so the 100 feels a lot shorter. Definitely a higher aerobic demand on the 200. For me, it is building more upper body strength, and more kicking strength. So weights and leg exercises. One problem with the legs is that I have had both hips and a knee replaced, so I am weak there. I think I have done a 1:25 100 yard with the freestyle, and 1:30 with my side stroke, but haven't done either for a time in quite a while. Not bad for being 69 and having pretty much no coaching.... Hope to get the side stroke down to 1:05, and freestyle down to 1:00. Oh, have to lose 35 more pounds.... Oh yea, I would like to see your stroke in slow motion, including start and flip turns. Makes it easier to pin point improvement areas.
Advice on the deadlift: Dont use mixed grip, unless its impossible to hold with double overhand grip. Better shoulder position on both sides + better grip strength training.
My PB is 50,76. So my goal is to break 50sec:) (Short-course) But I too started at out at over 1min and all of these tips sounds super good and important for a good 100m. Great vid!
I’m at 1:03 for 100 YARDS right now. I’m doing my best! This is really hard to do, but try breathing a little less. It’s great that you still have amazing technique while breathing, but a single breath could be the difference in winning or losing.
@@helenn6450 I try and breath once every three strokes to work on both sides in any event other then the 50. For my first year I was able to swim a 59 second 100 yard freestyle.
@@noahcramer5650even if you look at olympic swimmers they're breathing every two strokes. i used to breathe every 4 but i started doing it every two and dropped three seconds
I very like your channel, your movies are king of island among internet content is this field. I see your respect for swimming, your voice is stable and calm - this style suits well with swimming climate. My best result for 50m pool with jump is 1m08s and far away from what I dream of. Anyway this the best sport :) especially open water - Thank You !:)
1:25 I see wasted movement there in your hands They could go straight to streamline but there going above your head then going to streamline This could be the reason you are having issues with your turns What do you think of this??
My observation on improving technique for cutting a second would be to drive a more pronounced Early Vertical Forearm (EVF) to start the catch, then toward the end of the push flex the wrist to keep the palm in a vertical position for just a bit longer to extend the push power just a bit longer before finally popping the hand out pinky first. A slight rotation of the elbow upward I think facilitates setting up the EVF.
I haven’t swam in a while and I have a meet this coming Thursday and I’m nervous band my time is really bad and I’m trying to improve this really helped me understand what I’ve been doing wrong thank you :)
You are pulling a lot of air, try opening barely your fingers when extending your arms to release as many air bubbles, and then closing them thus generating a stronger pull. Hope it helps, your video definitely helped me!
The main advise for breaking 1 minute - let the swimming pool be your second home. Practice, practice and practice. The second thing (sad thing I guess) is that if you haven't started with swimming being 7-10 yo, it is really hard to "feel" the water as kids do. Almost impossible to break a minute starting with swimming being an adult already - bad habits, problems with flexibility etc. Anyway, nice video ;)
Monty Thibault I don't blame age, I am just talking about facts from swimming instructor's point of view and how our habits and movements affect our ability to learn swimming - it differs depending on age. Of course nothing is impossible, but much, much harder when you are an adult.
Filip Kołodziejczak I started swimming when I was 14 years old. I’m 17 now and under the minute in freestyle. Almost under in butterfly too, so no it’s not too late after the age of 10
I have a competition today and tommorow and this helped a lot Normally in 25 m I'll do 15 16 sec know that pretty good as I'm very young so if I'll do 16x4=1:02 but since I can't always keep the same paste I alway do like 1:15. Before the competition I'll try to practice this and I'll try to jump feather so I can do less time
With regard to kicking fast without a board holding your breath - The point here is to replicate your freestyle swimming position. For that, it's good to kick with hands leading at shoulder width, at the position your hands will be in when you pull. Kicking in a streamline compresses the shoulders, and puts the body in a different position from what you're in when you actually swim. I find that this helps me to adjust the angle of my kicking to be more "forward" when swimming; the angle I get from a streamlined kick is enough different that it trains the body inappropriately.

suggestion for probably dropping easily more than 2 seconds in your technique: 1) extension time is too long - once extended try to start moving the hand downwards towards catch (it will effectively increase the turn rate mind that) 2) extension is stopping you as you are extending with your hand moving above horizontal. This is creating a break that is stopping you a lot. Try extending slightly deeper with your right hand (elbow above wrist and shoulder and elbow level) look at 8:23 for what i am discussing in point 2
It can be used on a lot of training and improve the swim in all area. I have no doubt, if I follow this tips/drills i will achieve what I need. Amazing video ever!

thanks friend for share this video, when you're swim in this video I can see your movements like example really thanks. you should be my swim professor
Hey there! As a swimmer, I personally prefer high elbow catch and pull opposed to your more straight arm pull. However, that doesn't really matter as much. To each their own. I noticed a couple things though: 1. It seems like you are starting your pull slightly too early on your left arm, almost right after you finish off the stroke on your right. I tend to glide more in order to make sure I engage my lats as much as possible. 2. Close up those fingers. That will make your wrist less relaxed as well which is important for sprinting.
I' ve been swimming from 3 until I was 14. I started swimming again now at a 24 and my T100 is 1.11 (I'm overweight with 187cm X 95kg ). I am swimming about 2.5 km for 1H, but I am trying to add 250m every other day. I am glad I found out your channel, it really helps remembering the tips and tricks of this sport. Great job. I have a question, for the first time I am swimming in a 50m pool (I'm used to 25m) is there any tips to give to swim better in a longer pool? I feel like I would go faster in a 25m rather than a 50m
this is great! I'm a masters swimmer looking to kick out the lane I'm in. Love the way you break down the steps to strength and stretch training. And you're a rock star swimming under 1 minute making it look doable.
Still come back to this one to see what I might add to my own work outs. One thing I have focused on, and noted with some of your underwater push off and glide is that you have a slight arch in your back. This is common. I have been focusing on being able to feel the water on both chest and upper back when I push off the wall. If I relax, I can't feel the water flowing down most of my back because my back is arched. This also happens some times when swimming and I am not totally engaging my core. Easy to 'feel' if you are paying attention. One of those details that can take time off of your lap times...
Could you do a video on swimmers who change their stroke during the 100m freestyle. In the first 50 the swim with a smooth stroke with a high elbow recovery. In their second 50 they slowly transition to a straight arm pull and straight arm recovery. In their last 6m of their race they have a completely different stroke with a really long and slow pull. One example of this is Nathan Adrian.
I have trouble with controlling my breathing. Sometimes I will panic and come up too soon or breathe too much during a 100. My time is 1:05:45 and I'm hoping to break a minute this season.
I'm planning on 100m/1min as well and this video was really helpfull, thanks. Maybe you could do your dolphin kick for a longer time? I think you can do it for 15m in competitive (like michael phelps).
Gracias, ub saludo!
This is not going to sound possible but even if your dying on the last 25 if you keep pushing even though it feels like you can’t you’ll build stamina if you fight the pain. Hope this helps
I am 15 and my time is 49.78 (scy with a tech suit) and I would say that the 100 is an all out sprint and you should be going 100% for every part of it
We did 100 free time trials at practice tonight and apparently I’m supposed to be going 1:04 ish though I’m going around 1:13 right now. My 50 free time is supposed to be around 0:29 though it’s a 0:33 right now any tips for a desperate distance swimmer who’s trying to sprint?
You need to adjust your strategy. I swim a 47 100 meter free and the first 25 should be just below all out. I like to think about it being about 98-99% just below max effort. Then on the third 25 go max off the wall then obviously max on the last 25. Furthermore, reducing your breathing will help you dramatically. Every breath disrupts your body line and slows you down. I try to breath twice on the first length, 3 times on the second and third and 1 on the last lap. Finally, increase your stroke rate. Think about accelerating your hand as u finish ur pull and put it straight into your catch. Not straight out in front. That’s just wasted time in a resistance position creating no propulsion.
Great video! Beautiful technique. It looks like you have little head movement up and down. After taking a breath your head dips. Also, I noticed that your legs in dolphin kick are separated too much. The same happens when kicking of the wall after a flip turn. On an occasion, right after diving your whole body gets slightly angled to one side. With the dolphin kick, I would expect little more chest involvement. I hope I could help.:)
Well, recently watched a video commenting about the 2020 Olympic 4 by 100 freestyle relay. He was comparing the break out kicking and dolphin kicking. I think Caleb Dressel was taking one or two more dolphin kicks on his underwater, carrying the dolphin kick up through the break out stroke. You could add at least one more dolphin kick rather than breaking into the flutter kick just before you break out....
Excelente material bien presentado.
love your videos man...are AMAZING!I'm trying to improve my free style using your suggestions. I remain usually about 15-20 min after the lesson, so i can try these execises. But one night, after having taken a very tiring lesson, I couldn't sleep at night, I felt a weight on my chest and I had a wheezing, I couldn't breathe deeply, as if I couldn't yawn normally. I was a bit impressed by it, I don't know what the problem may have been, but I hope it won't happen again.

Better shoulder position on both sides + better grip strength training.
what? this is swimming

He needs to squat his legs too. If he deadlifts like that he’s gonna hurt himself.
those are romanian deadlifts, the version he's using works your glutes and hamstrings more
My PB is 50,76.
It’s great that you still have amazing technique while breathing, but a single breath could be the difference in winning or losing.
not good advice. for anything above 50 yards/meters, oxygen is essential for the muscles
Anyway this the best sport :) especially open water - Thank You !:)
of course for 100m :)
Aaaron swam this in 25m pool, which is faster
You are the best guys. I improve massivly my swimming just watching yours videos
1:25 I see wasted movement there in your hands
They could go straight to streamline but there going above your head then going to streamline
This could be the reason you are having issues with your turns
What do you think of this??
Above your head streamline is a correct streamline
I think that is one of the best videos that I have ever seen.
Wow! Your kick is amazing!😮 2:45
This is the best made instructional video I have seen on UA-cam so far.
Amazing ! Thanks for sharing your knowledges, it helps me a lot for teaching my swimmers. Kisses from France
My last start was 3,5 years ago and it was 1.00.73. I need to return to swimming and break this 1 minute
This is by far the best swimming video I've seen on UA-cam, really useful information, thanks!!!
Glad you think so!
I haven’t swam in a while and I have a meet this coming Thursday and I’m nervous band my time is really bad and I’m trying to improve this really helped me understand what I’ve been doing wrong thank you :)
The quickest most useful video
You are pulling a lot of air, try opening barely your fingers when extending your arms to release as many air bubbles, and then closing them thus generating a stronger pull. Hope it helps, your video definitely helped me!
I enjoy listening to you. 😁 And those Dolphin kicks are really beautiful to watch.
I'm no where near this fast but your videos are helpful! I love your presentation style! Keep sharing.
I can now swim 100 meters without dieing. Thank you
The main advise for breaking 1 minute - let the swimming pool be your second home.
Impossible is nothing
Monty Thibault I don't blame age, I am just talking about facts from swimming instructor's point of view and how our habits and movements affect our ability to learn swimming - it differs depending on age. Of course nothing is impossible, but much, much harder when you are an adult.
Filip Kołodziejczak I started swimming when I was 14 years old. I’m 17 now and under the minute in freestyle. Almost under in butterfly too, so no it’s not too late after the age of 10
Best swimming vid on UA-cam hands down.
Thank you!
I am from India 🇮🇳 and my swimming competition in after 7 days and this video is very helpful for me thanks sir 😊🙏.
I have a competition today and tommorow and this helped a lot
Normally in 25 m I'll do 15 16 sec know that pretty good as I'm very young so if I'll do 16x4=1:02 but since I can't always keep the same paste I alway do like 1:15.
Before the competition I'll try to practice this and I'll try to jump feather so I can do less time
3:02 impressive. I too dream of that day to transform into a boat. Sweet.
Wow! Great visualization walk throughs. Thank you 🙏
With regard to kicking fast without a board holding your breath - The point here is to replicate your freestyle swimming position.
Wow. I didn't know Aquaman ist doing swim coaching, too.
I had 1:07 yesterday which was my first time swimming in a year due to a foot injury hoping to break a minute by the end of the season.
Are you
OK!
Yep I’ve gotten down to 1:04:16
And am hoping to get 1:01 in my next comp
I hope to break the minute at the end of the season

suggestion for probably dropping easily more than 2 seconds in your technique:
1) extension time is too long - once extended try to start moving the hand downwards towards catch (it will effectively increase the turn rate mind that)
2) extension is stopping you as you are extending with your hand moving above horizontal. This is creating a break that is stopping you a lot. Try extending slightly deeper with your right hand (elbow above wrist and shoulder and elbow level) look at 8:23 for what i am discussing in point 2
Note 2 is very important the deeper extension of the right hand is important
Great video and analysis. Although I am not near a 1 minute per 100 (1:16), I feel there are lots of useful takeaways on this video for me.
Hagan el video en español 🙏 ...son unos genios!!...pude mejorar mucho gracias a sus vídeos!...saludos desde Bariloche Argentina

wow, pretty quick, that with some bubbles on the Hands and Fingers, but real quick. Main Problem is time for training, and efficiency and effect in propulsion.
So, good luck to you guys ! Never give up! It will work if you really really want.
U didn't tell about how to improve under water dolphin kich

I don’t know my long course time but my short course is 52.82 which I’m only 13 so idk if I would be able to break 1:00 in long course
The main problem breaking the minute is that time is going too fast☹
Bubble resistance on your hands when entering the water like Michael phelps would help a lot.
BTW, you have the best swimming videos. Thanks for it!
thanks friend for share this video, when you're swim in this video I can see your movements like example really thanks. you should be my swim professor
In my opinion's when you breath and skip the other two is great technique for saving the speed and to focus on your body much better . 👌🏻
Bro I've done so many races but couldn't swim faster😂🙋🏻♀️ thank God you are here
Hey there! As a swimmer, I personally prefer high elbow catch and pull opposed to your more straight arm pull. However, that doesn't really matter as much. To each their own.
I noticed a couple things though:
1. It seems like you are starting your pull slightly too early on your left arm, almost right after you finish off the stroke on your right. I tend to glide more in order to make sure I engage my lats as much as possible.
2. Close up those fingers. That will make your wrist less relaxed as well which is important for sprinting.
I went to the same place last summer as the place you showed at the end!
Thank you I have a competition comming soon
Fire kick turn.. PONK!!!🤯
Have you tried breathing every 3-5 strokes, keeps your head straight more often
I' ve been swimming from 3 until I was 14. I started swimming again now at a 24 and my T100 is 1.11 (I'm overweight with 187cm X 95kg ). I am swimming about 2.5 km for 1H, but I am trying to add 250m every other day. I am glad I found out your channel, it really helps remembering the tips and tricks of this sport. Great job.
I have a question, for the first time I am swimming in a 50m pool (I'm used to 25m) is there any tips to give to swim better in a longer pool? I feel like I would go faster in a 25m rather than a 50m
25m pool your time will always be faster than the 50m pool one so the best one to swim in a 50m pool is just stamina
This is how you should improve- just think that you're going a 42 in 100m freestyle. Think positive
Omg very effective lesson, learnt a lot appreciate 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for sharing the techniques! God bless you!
this is great! I'm a masters swimmer looking to kick out the lane I'm in. Love the way you break down the steps to strength and stretch training. And you're a rock star swimming under 1 minute making it look doable.
When doing the underwater kicks start your kick with your chest and that will make your underwater kicks stronger!
Thank you man for this amazing video
I have learned much about swimming
Thank you again
Thanks my friend for show in this video basics traning details greetings from Zacatlan
Thanks a lot bro watched to see if I can improve anything before the my swimming tournament
I have trouble with controlling my breathing. Sometimes I will panic and come up too soon or breathe too much during a 100. My time is 1:05:45 and I'm hoping to break a minute this season.
54/55 seconds is an unreal time, well done
I guess the poster is inspired by the UA Michael Phelps' ad.
When you see him do a 50 in 21 seconds and your time is 32 but your 10:
I must subscribe.
I'm planning on 100m/1min as well and this video was really helpfull, thanks. Maybe you could do your dolphin kick for a longer time? I think you can do it for 15m in competitive (like michael phelps).
I'm gonna have to swim Faster For My Competition On Next January 2023
Because I had to Do Backstroke And Freestyle
Gracias, ub saludo!

"I think I was afraid of dying at the end"-- yeah, I get that :(
This is not going to sound possible but even if your dying on the last 25 if you keep pushing even though it feels like you can’t you’ll build stamina if you fight the pain. Hope this helps
I am 15 and my time is 49.78 (scy with a tech suit) and I would say that the 100 is an all out sprint and you should be going 100% for every part of it
Thank you. Please do more of setup like this
Straight arm whole body connected finish(sprint) from as far out as you can manage.
We did 100 free time trials at practice tonight and apparently I’m supposed to be going 1:04 ish though I’m going around 1:13 right now. My 50 free time is supposed to be around 0:29 though it’s a 0:33 right now
any tips for a desperate distance swimmer who’s trying to sprint?
When fliping , point more horizontal, not so deep when dolphin kicks? Just guessing,im not an expert. Im in the 1:15 stage
Thanks for the advice! And congrats on you impressive time! Is that 47 m LCM?
Great video! Beautiful technique. It looks like you have little head movement up and down. After taking a breath your head dips. Also, I noticed that your legs in dolphin kick are separated too much. The same happens when kicking of the wall after a flip turn. On an occasion, right after diving your whole body gets slightly angled to one side. With the dolphin kick, I would expect little more chest involvement. I hope I could help.:)
Very well explained. thanks 👍
It s perfect! you gave a beautiful explanation, but I would like to hear your opinion on how much to train and how long, these topics! Wp ur video!❤🙌

Should get checked by your doctor, that’s not normal but it might not be related to swimming
