Finally got another one in the bag. And yes these rock and blues rock bassists were very underestimated back then. Pride and joy is another big bass song that'll take a while to learn the right way. Good vid man. And i like your tube overdriven sound ✌️
Killer cover. I'm surprised to see all the people talking about details getting lost in the mix or not knowing about this song's intricate bass line - maybe it's the bassist in me but I feel like, especially during the verse, bass is front and center in the mix, secondly only to the vocals. You did the song justice, only cover I've been able to find that truly hits all the little fills and frills. Cheers.
Thanks. I'd have to agree with you, the bass in this recording of this song was very upfront in the mix. Maybe people are mistakenly comparing it to the live version, which was a bit more "simplified"?
I am a guitarist that has volunteered to play bass in our band, since I own a bass and amp. Bass players are hard to find in the southern tier of NYS. Anyway, dogcow666 is right. If you arent listening to Geddy, most of the bass is lost in the mix. It's very hard to pick these lines out. If I cant hear something, I just look for you, to see if you have posted it. BTW, back in 1981, I had a Blue 4001, and a Peavy Mark IV bass rig. Damn I miss that them. So, here is a big thank you, for the work you put into posting these. I hope you make a butt load of youtube money! :-)
God bless you for shouldering the load. Great bass cover as always! Been listening to this track and Ed King’s bass line since the 70’s! Leon’s bass lines are spot on as well. Like Leon’s playing on “You Got That Right” solid groove!
Fantastic young man you always sound clean clear and in the pocket a lot of times better than the recording. Thanks, also not a whole lot of talking just straight to the tune.
Nice job as usual, Troy. I never knew that bass line was so complex. I know that when I played it (oh so many years back) I left at least 50% of it out.
Killer as always! Never realized the amount of intricacies with this one. I always knew it was a line that moved around quite a bit, but theres some cool rhythmic and melodic stuff I never caught. Good stuff!
Number 3 decision maker made it sound great! I never knew i was playing this so wrong. Thanks for the amazing lesson! Troy as I've typed these words before, you give me inspiration. Thank you.
Well here's another one I'm learning haha. It's crazy that you've covered most of these. You make it so much easier to learn. I would be playing it as the 13 year old Troy played it if I had to learn it off the album. Thanks again
Great bass covers I live not far from bethel woods my mom just went to see lynard Skynyrd and she loved this cover you did well done sir hats off to you 😀
Loved it! It waz interesting to see you play the verse figure on the open A string.....as I always just play most of the entire song in the 5th position. Less moving, esp since you already have so many other shifts to deal with. Very cool. I think the line behind the "solo" is the most underrated part of this song, and something alot of guys never take the time to learn....and instead just play another verse. It makes the song. Hell.....the bass IS this song. Great job on an old standard!
Yeah, I think I was saving myself the stretch by doing that. The change in the bass-line under the guitar solo is a key component that really makes the part more interesting, I think. Thanks a lot.
Really nice job brother! I never learned it properly and have to play it tonight! Now I know I'll be good with it...I'll send my tip jar cut your way...lol
Amazing work as always brother! I've always been a huge Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, and I cut my teeth on a lot of their songs as well. Leon Wilkinson was another influence on the bass for me, because I always loved his playing style. I thought the Ric was a very nice choice for that song! It has that growly punch very similar to a Jazz. I thought it's tone fit the song very well! As always, I thoroughly enjoyed your video! I also must say, that you really inspire me a great deal, thank you sir!
Another amazing cover Troy! I really enjoyed that one :D I never could pick out all those embellishments off of the vinyl I learned from back in the day. Thumbs up for choosing the Rick too! You brought new life to this song. Rock On!!!!!!
@@TJH3113 Thanks for the reply. I'm just starting to play bass in earnest after a 47-year hiatus and am still learning terminology, among other basics. At 0:15-0:16 and 0:24-0:25 you play three notes very quickly - 1/16 notes as I understand them or maybe even shorter notes. You do this many times during the track. It was my impression that playing three notes that quickly in succession was called a "triplet." And, BTW, I've never heard them in the original track before. So, this video expanded my thought processes on how I should be listening to or interpreting the music. Thanks again.
Ah, thanks for explaining. I'm self-taught and often make up terms for what I'm doing and am often corrected by viewers. In any case, the riffs you are referring to are definitely 3 notes in quick succession and they are definitely on the recording. As a young player, those things blew right by me and, only now, in my later years, have I grasped some of the finer points of these incredible bass lines. The thing about most Skynyrd bass lines is that you can get away with playing a stripped down version and still have it sound just fine.
Most basses could work for Southern Rock, but I'd say you can't go wrong with a Jazz, a Precision, or a Thunderbird. I've been out of the amp game for too long to weigh in on that, but anything that will amplify your bass will do. No need for anything too boutique. Think Fender (Rumble series), Peavy, Ampeg... Thanks so much and take care!
Another nice one! Hey, I saw you were at a Fab Faux show. Any chance of you doing some Will Lee? Carnaval and Free time by Spyro Gyra would be a good place to start...
Damn nice!! Love it! I was just playing along with my souped up Squire Jazz (Geddy is in the case for a gig) and the tone of that almost is dead on with yours LOL "Beautiful Girls" by Van Halen would be a good song to cover, IMO
Good to see someone using all 4 fingers , few open strings , no pick and executing the fingering in a tight , logical way . But " whatever works " for you .
I've never been a huge Skynyrd fan but I've always fancied this bass line lol. Sounds great! I'm kinda surprised you haven't done Roller by April Wine.
Me neither. Glad you liked it, thanks. I don't think I've ever heard that song but I'll try to check it out. I've got a cover of "Just Between You and Me" off to the side that I didn't do such a great job on, but I'll probably post it at some point.
You've been doing a bit more pop-ish stuff and it made me think of Danger Danger by Dalbello (she was big in Canada in the 80s). I think it was played with a pick but it's worth a listen just for the bass tone
A lot of guys dont knoe how good Leon Wilkenson's bass lined were so melotic. Used to play this song 40 years ago. Learned alot of Skynard from One More For the Road song book. That and of course the grove fron the record. Came to brush up on some Skynard and to see what bass you'll play. I think first time i saw the Rick, beautiful bass. Do you have any 80's Japanese basses?
Yeah, Leon was an amazing player! I'm not crazy about Rics. I've had a few, but always wind up getting rid of them. Then I'll see one I really like, buy it, and am reminded of why I don't care for them. As for 80's Japanese basses, I've got an Ibanez Roadstar II RB-850 (I think), two Aria Pro II's, and a Westbury Track 2 bass. I consider them to be among the best basses that I own.
@@TJH3113 Just looked at my comment and have to start wearing my glasses while typing. Those Japanese made instruments are very well made and ppl are starting to get hip to them. I have a Westbury Track I, Aria Pro II zzb and a Westone Concord that I don't think was available in the U.S. That's next on my list is one of the Ibanez RS basses. I wish I would have known about them in the 80's, the Westbury is built like a tank and the Westone is a Medium scale but the bass is a thumper all punch above there original price point. You are the one I come to to brush up and learn a new song here and there and you do a good variety of songs, kind of songs I play, thank you for getting back.
I see that you are not using the "Deluxe" of the RIC. Different inlays and the binding. The 5 string version is only available the basic way (thus I learned the difference when buying a Ric 5, Deluxe was not available.) So surprised to see a 4 string version not deluxe. Any reason why?
I'm not a fan of Rickenbacker basses. The only time I really like them is when I don't have one. Once I get one I'm reminded of what I don't like about them. I'd sold my previous Ric, saw this one, liked the way it looked and bought it. I tried my best to turn it into something I could live with , but wound up selling it. I actually prefer the look of these basses (4003S) to the 4003.
So you got it...this p/u is a replacement. The Doobie Bros. covers that I did with this bass have the stock p/u and my "Entre Nous HD" actually had a Guild pick up which is how the bass stands now.
I see the neck pickup is missing, I wonder why ? Sounded great my friend, I’ll have to minus the neck pickup on my Ric and see how it turns out thank you
Troy, every cover you do inspires me to keep pushing forward. I love reading your commentaries. For the life of me, I can't get the embellishments by ear. You just nail them. Awesome job. I just have one question: are you actually using your ring finger, on your right arm (using 3 fingers to strike/pick the strings)? It sure does look like it, and if so, you are a madman (in a good way) ..lol. Well, you are either way. WOW!!!
That's great to hear, thanks for letting me know. Think of your ear as a muscle - the more you struggle to hear and learn those little details, the easier it will become. It's not easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is. No, just the two fingers on my right hand. My ring fingers follows along closely to help out with muting. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I appreciate it.
Hey Troy. Been a fan for ages and have a request. Might not be your cuppa tea, but I'd love to see you do "Smooth Operator," by Sade. I'm a big fan of her bass player, Paul Denman. Thanks! -Richard
Great job and thanks for sharing! Actually, most of bass guitar recorded on Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd was played by Ed King not Leon Wilkerson. All bass lines on this album are brilliant! From Wikipedia "Bassist Leon Wilkeson left the band a few months before the album's recording sessions. Ex-Strawberry Alarm Clock guitarist Ed King had been impressed with the band after an earlier incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd had opened for Strawberry Alarm Clock in Florida circa 1970. He told vocalist Ronnie Van Zant to keep him in mind if he ever needed a guitarist, and he was invited to replace Wilkeson as bassist. Once the recording sessions were wrapping up, Van Zant decided that King would better serve the band as a guitarist, and he visited Wilkeson and convinced him to rejoin. Wilkeson returned to the band and King moved to lead guitar, giving the band what would become their trademark "Three Guitar Army" along with Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. Wilkeson was back in the band by the time the band shot the cover photo for the album, and appears on the cover, as well as being acknowledged in the liner notes."
The only bassist who plays patterns and postions the correct way IMO. Never using those dreaded OPEN STRINGS. I only aspire to learning songs from watching you and for That reason! 😉
You know, I don't think there's ever a right or wrong way (or position) to play a song, so long as all of the notes are right. But, as I've gotten older, my appreciable for fretted notes has grown. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Glad you like it! I agree, there is a lot more going on with the bass than most people realize.

@@TJH3113 Agreed. Leon was a very melodic bass player and very underrated. I had to learn That Smell for an old band and boy was it a workout!

The Ed King factor. He rarely gets the credit for his contributions to L.S.

Outstanding. Back to the 70s once again

Good to see someone using all 4 fingers , few open strings , no pick and executing the fingering in a tight , logical way . But " whatever works " for you .
Thank you?
I don't think I've ever heard it, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Good song, good cover
Yes... and thanks.
Could you do a tutorial on this ? So wish I could play this as smooth as you,. ❤️
I'll give it some thought. Thanks Cindy.
Excellent as always my good dude. 😎👍
Thank you very much.
And that’s what they call jamming!
Nice job
Thanks!
Epic! Skynyrd 4ever! U are the guy!!!!!!
Any suggestions for amp settings to get this tone? P or J bass?
Thank you!
I wish I could help, but I'm really not much of a tone/tech guy. I just turn the knobs until I like what I hear.
Perfection as always my friend!
Thank you kindly.
Hell yeah! That's a nice rickenbacker also!
Thanks!
Definitely #3. Geddy Lee playing Southern Fried Rock lol
Haha.
Perfect! Thanks!
I see that you are not using the "Deluxe" of the RIC. Different inlays and the binding. The 5 string version is only available the basic way (thus I learned the difference when buying a Ric 5, Deluxe was not available.)
So surprised to see a 4 string version not deluxe.
Dang that Ric sounds good !
Glad you think so. Thanks.
Leon Wilkeson was a god 🤘 great stuff
No doubt! Thanks Riley.
@@TJH3113 omg I didn't know you would reply lol your a big inspiration man keep up the good work bass brother ❤️
@@rileylatinville5840 I'm still trying to keep up with responding to comments. Thanks so much for the kind words. Take care, Riley!
@@TJH3113 thanks man have a good one bud, keep rockin 🤘
Good job Troy. Meow.
Once again, thank you.
We enjoy your stories as much as your music.
I'm glad to hear it. Thanks. I'm afraid to see what I wrote about on this one.
@@TJH3113 Ha! - It's all good. :-)
I really like the idea of the 4003s --> 4000 conversion. That's the stock bridge pup? It sounds a lot beefier than mine.
I read the rest of the description right after posting this. Great work as usual!
So you got it...this p/u is a replacement. The Doobie Bros. covers that I did with this bass have the stock p/u and my "Entre Nous HD" actually had a Guild pick up which is how the bass stands now.
I dig it.
Oh well...the sound is in the fingers as they say, so even at the times you go with #3 you make it work, perfectly.
Thanks.
Nice one.
Thanks.
I see the neck pickup is missing, I wonder why ? Sounded great my friend, I’ll have to minus the neck pickup on my Ric and see how it turns out thank you
I never used it so I had it taken out.
It's got this cool punchy mid-range sound.
Is that ric Original, did you put a high mass bridge on it sounds amazing trying decide if that is a 4001 or a 4003
The bridge is stock. I had the neck p/u removed and the bridge p/u was a replacement made by ClassicAmplification which are made to older, 4001 specs.
Yes, you are absolutely correct.
Hi man, congrats for the great covers.....please do Midnight train to Georgia or Plastic Doll by Angie Bee
Thank you. I'll check them out.
Jammin!!!
Thanks.
