I had a hankerig for Molly Hatchett today and went down a Utube rabbitt hole. I cam accross this and as usuall very nice work. I think the 70s was a fantastic decade of bass players. Musicians did runs and even the disco era carried some great bass playing. I covered this jam in a band back in the 80s and that entire album was killer!
Every time my band calls out a difficult number to learn, Professor Troy is my first call. Sure enough, the Master nails another one. Thank you kindly. You truly rock.
Sooo tight,,Great job Using this as a lesson, Heard it on the radio last night and decided to record a cover. Two main gtrs are done, time to learn the bass, on a smoke break, lol Which brought me to you… Thanks again, Cheers from Northern Ontario 🇨🇦
Banner Thomas was a beast. I was 9 when this came out. My older brothers turned me on to this classic southern rock jam. I thank them often for letting me hang in their room and getting me into music. And I thank you for posting this Troy. And that bass sounds great my good dude.
Very much appreciate your musicianship on this, one of my favorite bass lines. Some of the old southern rock musicians live in the area and I found myself standing in line at “Mickey D’s” behind Banner Thomas one morning several years ago. I didn’t bug him, just a smile & a nod on the way out. 🎸
2 thumbs down on this? Are people that blind or will fully ignorant to outstanding playing and good southern rock with an edge? Whatever. Troy, fantastic job as always. Thanks.
I've got 2-3 people who give every video a thumb down. I don't take it personally. My like/dislike ratio is surprisingly high. It's actually a little sad that they actually go out of their way to do it. When a cover doesn't get a thumb down, I worry about them a bit and hope that nothing happened. Now, what I was really shocked about was that one of the Dixie Dregs show clips got 5 thumbs down - that's just wrong! Thanks a lot.
2016 Road King I didn't give it a thumbs down, but I came close just because I hate, and I mean hate, this song. It used to be in some Nascar game for Playstation, and it would play on repeat for lap after lap...it doesn't hold up to repeated listenings.
B gilley Well, I could understand that a repeated song on a constant loop would make anyone feel that way. But I have to pose this question: if the song playing on a constant loop every lap was your all time most favorite song would you still feel the same way (grow to hate the song)? I'm just curious.
2016 Road King No, I don't think I'd grow to hate a song I genuinely love just from repeated listenings. I mean there are many classic songs that have been played to death that I still like. I just don't think this is a very good song. It's like all the cheesiest parts of southern rock combined with vapid lyrics and a vocal performance that I genuinely despise.
Wow, thanks Stephen! I would never say that. All the credit goes to the people who wrote, recorded, and performed these bass-lines that I play. I'm just a decent mimic. Take care!
This was "our band" at the time - my friend and I saw them 5 times in the space of 2-3 years around Chicago. Always a straightforward, no-BS show that did not disappoint. Was a little less cool when Danny Joe had to take a break, but we still supported them. And we got to meet the replacement singer out in the arena one time. Great musicianship, both the band and you, Troy! Keep them coming!
Expertly done once again! The only thing better than Southern Rock is Jethro Tull as you know when you play it. Cool to learn about Frank Frazetta. That artwork on those album covers was unparalleled. I marveled at that creativity and detail. That was big time talent. Thanks for sharing that information.
I LOVE this!! It's one of a few songs you could liken to either a tsunami, landslide or a ski jump! You take a deep breath, push off from the top and then enjoy the unstoppable ride! There really isn't a second spared in this - whether it's the bass or one of the guitars you're listening to - and it's a tribute to the 'recording speed' of Troy's ears that he could accumulate it all and present us with this superb rendition. Certainly not for lightweights!!
Fantastic work, brother. That song is on my workout playlist that I listen to while doing cardio. Constant motion in the bassline - really drives the song. Staying on the B during the whole chorus is absolutely genius. When people ask me who my favorite bass player is it's always tough because EVERY band in the 60s and 70s had great bass players. Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, Jack Casady, Berry Oakley, Leon Wilkenson, Banner Thomas, Roger Glover, John Paul Jones, Randy Meisner, Chis Squire, John Entwistle, Phil Lesh, Dave Hope, Ross Valory, Phil Lynott and of course Geddy Lee - to name few. In those days the bass was a preeminent sound in popular music from Motown to rock, pop, dance, funk and folk. Not only doesn't recorded music sound as good today the BASS doesn't sound the same. I LOVE the PRESENSE that the 60s and 70s bass had in music. Thanks for posting this - peace.
Troy I think it is fantastic how you choose to cover such a diverse range of material for these videos. It never ceases to amaze me how proficiently you accomplish it also. You are a tremendous player and thank you for doing these videos.
I’m just learning the bass at the age of 56. I’ve never played anything before. I think I saw where the learning of the scales comes into play on this song. Thanks for making part of my lessons make more sense! Awesome playing sir!!!
...hmmmm, '79? I was solidly in the jazz-rock fusion and progressive rock genre at the time and can't say I ever knowingly listened to a Hatchet tune. Maybe I missed something during those years? Thanks for posting - top shelf as usual - I guess I need to find me some other Hatchet tunes and give a listen.
I learned half of what I know from watching your videos. Awesome man. Thanks for posting this one. One of my favs. I always look for the videos of the dude with the mask wall, lol.
Our band used to play this and “Dreams I’ll Never See” at the end of 520 Causeway and US 1 in Cocoa Beach back in 1982. This will be another I on my wish list to play bass on. I can almost smell the ocean from here! 😂😂 Thank you so very much!
I will learn this song from watching you, the best video i found for precise playing,. very cool, . you are amazingly talented to be able to play so many songs so perfectly..i always enjoy the videos you have..thank you for sharing your great talent with us,..
Awesome! I hope it's helpful. I recently found out that there is an isolated bass track on UA-cam. Maybe that might be of some help too? Thanks and take care.
Yeah, that was a lot quicker than I thought it was going to be. Thanks so much for the tip! I actually went through all my videos the other night to see if anything else was blocked. There was only one, “Holy Diver” by Dio.
lol geez i was 16 then...brings back memories..still got that album on vinyl...thanx for the little history lesson of learning it back in the day....You mention Milford, PA, Frazetta’s Fantasy Corner..small world i'm in Dingmans Ferry!...Frazetta’s use to be in E. Stroudsburg i believe, they use to have a store there with the haunted house walk-thru upstairs..too funny!..Anyway, good job on the cover!
Actually, I've got to go back and correct that (thanks for reminding me). His shop is actually in East Stroudsburg, PA. We pass through Milford and Dingmans Falls on the way there. There's a great shop in Dingamans called "Phoenix." We've been going there forever too.
Good, informative notes in your description, good reading. I noticed you have a ?' next to pre-chorus, I often wonder why people use that term and not bridge, we've had bridges in music for so long that they even imported the London Bridge to Lake Havasu in commemoration. 😄 Peace man, great bass playing.

Awesome playing for sure. Would you consider extending the intro and outro of you videos to allow me to playback. I learn alot of Southern Rock from your videos and I appreciate the work you have put into making them for all the bass players. Thank you.

Molly Hatchet's early album cover art was the best, I can still stare at that for hours. I never really thought it matched up with the music on the records, though. That first album was great.
Excellent cover! This brings back a few memories since Molly Hatchet was one of my favorite bands back then and I still love their music today. A band I was in (early-mid 80s) did Molly Hatchet's version of "Dreams I'll Never See" which was a favorite of mine to play. As much as I liked Lynyrd Skynyrd, I liked the edgier bias of a little more rock and just a tad less southern that Molly Hatchet had. very nice. i remember trying to learn the guitar parts in my guitar days, never got the solo stuff. never realized how fun the bass was on this song as well.
Glad to see you still going at it strong! Been a long time subscriber for several years now rolling over from my old channel. Excellent work my friend, always love seeing a new video pop up from you. Keep on rockin'. BTW - looks like 2 people don't know what good music and bass playing is.
Such a great song. the 12th note walk up makes me shake my first in the air in time! (Such as 1:19). great job. I'll say it again, your timing is insane!
Never realized how well thought out this bass line is. Each part flows nicely into the next, also never realized how the bass stays in one position during the chorus while the guitars don't. Very cool detail! Great as always! Always look forward to your videos.
Another masterclass by Troy!
Thanks so much!
One of the best bass lines ever, nailed.
Awesome! I’m glad you liked it.
The great Banner Thomas!
Power!
Indeed
His lines were awesome
This song swings so hard, and the bass is key to making that happen. Thanks for giving us an up-close look!

Rock on!
1st concert I ever attended: Molly Hatchet.....1980. Couldn’t hear properly for 3 days. 🎸👂
Very cool!
That little pattern during the chorus is so cool. Never noticed how much of the groove the bass was holding together on this song.
It is neat, isn't it? I just plows straight through the entire part of the song.
I couldn't agree more! Love playing this bass line or just listening to it.
Damn dude. Excellent! Nice bass collection!! Even Banner would be proud
Thanks a lot!

Glad to see you still going at it strong! Been a long time subscriber for several years now rolling over from my old channel. Excellent work my friend, always love seeing a new video pop up from you. Keep on rockin'.
BTW - looks like 2 people don't know what good music and bass playing is.
Thanks a lot!
I love your videos SO much! they help me out when learning new material.
I'm always very glad to hear that. If I could do more, I would.
Such a great song. the 12th note walk up makes me shake my first in the air in time! (Such as 1:19). great job. I'll say it again, your timing is insane!
It is, isn't it? Awesome! Thanks.
Awesome as usual...this song always kicks ass as do your covers. Dreams I'll Never See also rocks
Thank you. A few people have mentioned that song. I'll check it out.
One of my favorite songs of all time. Superb!

Glad you liked it. Thanks.
I always love when you do songs I already know, it allows me to check my work. Keep it up!
Haha. I'll try.
Never realized how well thought out this bass line is. Each part flows nicely into the next, also never realized how the bass stays in one position during the chorus while the guitars don't. Very cool detail! Great as always! Always look forward to your videos.
I have a much greater appreciation for it since I learned it. Thanks a lot.
great job, thanks for sharing. that guild sounds very smooth.

Great song! I love this band. My favourite song of theirs is "Dreams I'll Never See". Any chance we can get a cover of that someday?
