For future here is schematic of TUAAM initiator box: electronicnoobblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/cofflgifidfnkala.png You can use it without it and with any radio by following this simple steps; Left side schematic is for ATU (straight cable 1:1) so just look up at letters on the ATU socket they will match. From this You are interested in pin C (with is 24V DC) and E with is GND. Other pin is used for triggering silent mode (not needed) and for triggering PTT on radio by ATU (not needed). Just apply power to C and E and transmit RF and it will tune - check SWR on radio to be sure.
Interesting video. This antenna tuning unit was designed at Racal-BCC in Wembley, London by David Hodgson (my boss). It was part of Clansman series and was indeed designed for use with PRC351/352. It was typically installed on FFR (24 volt) landrovers, APCs and light tanks. Thank you for posting.
Never saw this set up before in my years in the Royal Signals. The TUAAM (Tuning Unit Automatic Antenna Matching) is made for the VRC 353 and you need the ARFAT (Automatic Radio Frequency Antenna Tuning) connected with the control cable (as well as the coax) for it to work correctly.
@@ElectronicNoobBlog We only had one kind of TUAAM (and that is 100% a TUAAM) in the Royal Signals. and that BAE (Base Antenna Element) is the type we used together with the TUAAM and ARFAT to use a 353.
Very interesting.. I used to use this back in the day. Never seen the tuning unit controller though. Just used to tune directly from the PRC353 vehicle radio as it had a tune setting on the power knob.
I think Your radio talk directly to tuner so this panel was not needed. PRC353 if I recall it supported some kind of digital data mode? Have You use it with teletype?
Errata: I state that it lengthening antenna and that will be true for lower band, for upper it will short it up because vehicle antenna most like will act like 1/4 wavelength. So for example 50Mhz will give 1/4 wavelength about 1.5m (whip is about 2 meter long).
Sure, it can be used with any radio. I have schematic for control unit with all pinout. If You want i can find it. From what i remember it require just power and automatically start tune cycle (you need supply RF then) to re-tune just reset power and apply RF.

And thanks to You for first hand feedback!

Are You sure, I don't think BCC-543 is designed for constant 50W, maybe You mean BCC-563?

The 5820-99-630-6488 is labelled M/PACK and therefore suggests that it is used in a PRC-351 application surely? As I recall, the manual confirms this.

@@ElectronicNoobBlog Only used the T100 teleprinter with a 321 via some crypto gear.
works on the PRC 351/2 with the initiate unit + ARFAT and the VRC 353 + the ARFAT ( NO initiate unit needed)
Very useful information, thanks
You are welcome

Where to give the power supply plus, minus ( pin B, C, F, E ?)
Do you think it could work without PRC 351? Or in other words - could it be adapted to use with any other radio f.ex. some HAM radio?
