Review: Aputure Deity shotgun microphone; including durability test (shock, water etc)

- We review Aputure's Deity microphone, a $369 USD shotgun they're pitching in the same league as Sennheiser's MKH-60 and 416, or the Schoeps CMC641. Aputure say this is an "extremely durable" mic so we drop it, drown it and bash it around. Does it survive? Watch the video to find out.
To buy the Aputure Deity or any of the other mics mentioned, please consider using our Amazon link as that way we get a small commission which helps to keep this website running. Thank you.

Oh my gosh! This is the mother of all mic reviews!!
Epic presentation Sir!!!
Haha, thank you!
Epic tests, thanks for that!
Thanks Curtis. Do I recall correctly you've got minus 20 degrees or similar where you are?? Go on, smash a Deity through that ice, you know you want to ... ;-)
Haha! Ok, will do!
Awesome test! I was chuckling throughout. Good show lad!
Thank you!
That was the best off axis test I have seen done!!! It was actually a great practical test since run and gun shooters are inherently going to be shooting in louder environments (crowds, events, etc) Thanks for the video! I might add this mic to my mic locker...
Cheers,
Greg
Thanks. I think it's going to become my standard test from now on!
That was an awesome test.
I think ALL the manufacturers in the world should do test reviews with you first.
Thanks for sharing
So do I! ;-)
Wow! This is the most hardcore review for a microphone...so I subscribed. ;-)
Thank you!
Great review! Very informative and entertaining!
Thank you; glad you liked it.
I think you elevated microphone review to a new level, and this is just one of the memorable quotes I heard from you..
"The Deity is solidly built. The kind of mic you would fend off intruders with, and it would seem it would work afterwards."
Great job!
Haha, glad you liked it. Cheers
An excellent review. I really like how you have introduced real-life methods of drying the mic after its dunk in the canal. The microphone truly is impressive. This would be my choice to take to a ski slope for example to record interviews etc as I wouldn't be concerned if it suddenly slipped out of a gloved hand and fell into the snow. Although I would most probably need another Deity in my backpack as a backup for immediate continued recording depending on how wet the mic would get. Aperture are fast becoming a highly reputable company with their lighting gear and now this mic.
Agreed, I think that's exactly the kind of environment this is suited for.
nice mic and nice review!
Thank you!
you are brilliant so glad I found this!
Ha! Awesome. Mic v. Wild.
It was particularly impressive with the chainsaw off-axis.
I was quite surprised how well it did myself!
Great review thanks. I thought you might fry the electrics plugging it in wet but very impressive results. Ask Sennheiser to send you a 416 to try the same test :-)
Hahaha, maybe I will!!
Considering the mic could record your Shakespearean abuse with no undue peaks or distortions it has to be a very good mic. Good price too from the way it sounds to me in your tests. Thumbs up.
Cheers
Great review but I'm still left with some questions. I personally liked the Sennheiser's sound (had a little more higher end) But which mike has more output? when you switched mics, were the levels the same (as well as eq.) ? Also how does the sennheiser compare when off axis? Thanks so much! Jake
Unfortunately I don't recall if either had greater or lesser signal output than the other, sorry.
I am struggling between buying a second hand 416 and the deity. After seeing this fine test ( I subscribed) I am leaning against the deity. Since I'm going to travel in very humid environment, on the sea, I wonder, would the 416 take like a light rain? or humid environment? Is the deity the obvious choice here?
Thanks for the compliment and for subscribing. Unfortunately, I have no experience with the 416 to advise you about its robustness, sorry.
You should have a winter Coat sponsor! having to stand about by cold canals. Nice red jacket btw. :-)
Haha, I wish I did! That jacket's done me very well but looking a bit grubby now, alas :-(
Nice review. Mic. looks good value. You may have no future as a Shakespearean actor, but an alternative career as a Fred Dinenage impersonator could be worth pursuing.
Haha, did you know I used to work with him?
TubeShooterMag No! Maybe some of your charisma rubbed off on him. Or vice versa.
Yes! Who knows... ;-)
Anybody know what these should cost used these days, I found one used but as wondering what I should negotiate since they are no longer available to be bought...? Thanks!
I like the video and I want this microphone for it's durability and price. However, I do have questions and concerns. First, will the Aputure Deity fit my rycote super softie? Second, I'm looking buy a rode blimp with a rycote lyra mount will it work? Third will it fit my rycote universal shock mount?
Rycote gear is available in different sizes to fit different mics so you'd need the appropriate one for the Deity. Best to drop Rycote an email with these queries since they make the gear!
Perfect will do!
I'm investing in a shotgun mic, and subjectively I'm finding it hard to pick between the NTG4+/3, and this. Which would you recommend, P.S I'm using it for filmmaking, and need to capture all kinds of sound, and I'm using a Tascam DR-70d for recording.
I can't give you a recommendation with such wide criteria; they're all good mics though. The NTG3 is, if I recall correctly, somewhat toughened and moisture-resistant as is the Deity as shown in my video so if you're doing lots of outdoor recording in mixed environments then perhaps one of those over the NTG4+ (I presume the DR70d will offer phantom power for the mics?). Don't forget to budget for a good furry windjammer, I highly recommend Rycote despite their cost.
Yea absolutely, if you had to personally pick between the NTG3 and the Deity, for what sounds best, what would you reckon?
I haven't tested the NTG3, sorry.
Okay! Thank you!
Is this microphone better or Sennheiser MKH8060?
Define "better"?! I haven't tried the MKH8060 so can't really give a good answer.
I just remembered another question I forgot to ask. Why did you record at 24 bit? Normally we record at 48 khz 24 bit which is the standard. Why did you record in 16 bit?
Not sure what you mean by "the standard"; there are many recording standards: 16 / 24 bit; 44, 48, 96 kHz etc are all oft-used setttings. I can't recall why I chose that format unless it was the default on my camcorder.
Oh I didn't it was on your camcorder. When I work with camera people I always set my settings to 48kHz 24 BIT and sometimes 96kHz 24Bit if they are going to add folley later. Again, that's just me.
I'm guessing that the camcorder I was using pre-selected that format according to whichever video format I was using (I don't recall now whether I shot mp4 or mpeg-2). Also, given that it will be both compressed on export from the computer and then recompressed by UA-cam (and goodness only knows what the eventual viewer will watch and listen to it on!) it's probably not worth getting too stressed about a few extra bits in the recording because frankly the difference will not be audible via this medium!
Subscribe because the mic was swimming safe and sound 😀
Well you can't help but be impressed by that! The test with roughly 115dB of chainsaw would of sold it to me but using it as a non conversational ice breaker was unbelieveable.
Given it's price point, resistance to unprecedented abuse from a mean spirited reviewer and the almost negligible difference in sound quality would probablyI find it difficult to spend my hard earned elsewhere!
Haha, it does feel a lot more substantial than the ME66, not that that really tells you anything about it inside. But it sounds decent too. I'm very tempted to thump it until it breaks and see what the real limit is...
Send it to me and I'll give it to my children for roughly eleven seconds... should do it.
I shudder to imagine where it might end up
I'm not entirely sure but the dogs looking concerned for some reason...
