Review: Rode Newsshooter wireless XLR microphone kit
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Following on from their wireless lavalier system (the "Rodelink Filmmaker" kit), Rode have introduced a similar setup for handheld stick mics such as those used by TV news reporters.
This comprises a transmitter which plugs directly onto the XLR socket on the bottom of the mic, and a receiver which plugs into your camcorder. This is our review.

If you'd like to buy the system, please consider using these links as that way we get a small commission which helps to keep the videos coming:

Filmmaker kit: amzn.to/2dV3S51
NOTE: the Newsshooter kit was provided to us free of charge but the opinions and love for it expressed are genuinely our own; we didn't even know the kit was coming until it turned up (!) and we never let suppliers dictate what we say in our reviews.

Here's a rough calculation but I'm no orienteerer
4:22 20 double paces
5:00 50 double paces about 100m
5:40 70 double paces about 140m
7:22 85 double paces on the way back
was it uphill? say 5ft\pace ... x 12" ÷ 39" = ~130m
Excellent work!! :-)
Thanks David. It's a great setup. Thanks for taking the time out to do the distance test. It seems to hold up very well.
Ah, glad you watched! Yes, I think I detected one tiny glitch as I wandered off into the distance but that was about it. I do like it very much. Cheers!
Amusingly goes up to 11 😂.
Great, clear and concise report, extremely well produced.
Thank you
Thank you David for a great review.
Very nice review, well done. And at double the advertised range (yes, you walked at least 200 mtrs!) it is a no brainer.
Thank you! That reminds me, I was going to go back and try measuring it today since the sun's out :-)
Will this work If I used the H6 Audio Recorder instead of my camera?!
Providing the audio recorder has a 3.5mm input, then yes it should do.
That was pretty impressive range even though it was out in the open. That probably suggests that at 20 meters or so inside a building might work equally as well. At 4 GHz, the unit probably won't hear much noise from auto ignitions and flourescent lights. My Sennheiser SKP100 (Similar plug-in transmitter) won't operate nearly as far and it operates in the TV "white space" frequencies (530 MHZ) which may not always be available in the future.
Thanks for a concise and informative review.
I suppose it depends on exactly what's inside the building! Glad you liked the review. Cheers.
Does anyone know if it works with Sennheiser ME2 or MKE2 lav mics? That would be a great alternative to G3 then!
Interesting review, but... at 3:23... you could have given that wifi unit a bit of a clean... tut tut !
Randomly while doing interviews the sound stopped working. It showed the wireless channel and everything show sound working, but it did not send the sound to the phone. After the event when we found 70% of our footage had no sound I attempted to do testing to find out why. The headphones still work, the wireless part still works the transmission shows the sound levels, but it would not send to the phone. I tried it direct to a mixing board to see and that did not work either. So I put earphones into the sound out spot and that did not work either. So for some reason we are not getting sound out. This there a change that my nine year old radio show host accident changed a setting that disables that sound out port? He used to hit mute by accident but now he has been on the air for two years he has learned not to mess with the mic while recording. I just can't figure out why it is not putting out sound. Any ideas??
Hmm, puzzling. You reckon the receiver is receiving a signal, you say? How are you connecting the receiver to the phone? I don’t recall the receiver having a headphones output so I’m not sure what you plugged them into on the receiver. You know there is a mute button on the receiver?
Is there a cheaper version of this for the Rode Reporter?
I would say well over 100 metres there seemed more like 400 based on your size in the distance
I think I spotted a measuring thing there yesterday, I'll go back and check!
TubeShooterMag average pace distance is .75 certainly looked like you paced more than 133 paces. interesting test. lol just go back and pace it and then you will know.
Ha! OK :-)
TubeShooterMag I hope you let us know if you return to measure. BTW did you trust to luck when you walked away from your camera or was there someone else guarding your gear?
I was on private land :-)
I gif the complete kits and it cost me £500.00
Do you think this would work to a satisfactory level with the SM86 condenser mic that requires consistent phantom power?
I don't know, unfortunately. Not sure what you mean by "consistent"?
Your the canal guy arnt you?.......what are you doing with exspensive mic gear? XD
I am, and I used to do camcorder reviews and suchlike back when I worked in telly hence the collection of gear.
I find this an extremely exciting bit of kit, for easy use for interviews. If my channel begins to grow somewhat I think I'll pick one up. Thanks for the review.
Excellent. Cheers
Can I use this with the lav mic together? Im trying to turn my shotgun mic into a wireless system with my lav mic.
Do I need two receivers or just one will do?
Will it also work with other receivers?
It's a single channel system unfortunately, so only one mic per transmitter/receiver pair. It only works with Rode's own system, as most manufacturer's systems do.
Plug on transmitters: affectionately known as 'butt plugs'. Good video
Ha! I'm quite pleased I didn't know that ;-)
Can I connect the receiver to a mobile device like my android phone ?
Possibly but you'd need an adapter to turn the TRS jack coming off the receiver into a TRRS jack suitable for a phone.
Can the AA batteries be charged through the USB post ?
No, it contains no charging functionality.
@@TubeShooterMag thx
So if I want to charge this what can I do or do I have to keep on buying new batteries ?
Can the transmitter send phantom power to the mic? Thank you.
Yes, the transmitter plugged into the base of the mic can supply phantom power.
I'm just wondering. does the receiver works with any sound mixer for any other purposes
Not sure quite what you're asking but the receiver will plug into any audio device with a 3.5mm line level unbalanced jack input.
What's the difference between this and the filmmaker kit? This is a hundred bucks more but the filmmaker kit offers more?
The difference in the overall end result is nothing but this one has the transmitter designed to connect onto the bottom of a balanced (XLR) type professional stick microphone such as a news reporter would use; it can also therefore be used to connect to any XLR balanced mic which the filmmaker kit cannot (as it has only an unbalanced 3.5mm input). This can also be powered from more things (Sony NPF batteries as well as AA cells for example)
Oh okay, I did see a video where someone used a saramonic smart rig to convert the xlr to 3.5 mm. In a nutshell, I'm trying to sort of "frankenstein" my own audio set up with a wireless boom pole and in the end, not use sync sound. @@TubeShooterMag
I also just don't see the need to use sync sound anymore. Tech has gotten sooooo much better just in the last few years alone! My friend and I did several audio tests and when we plugged our xlr mic into a Zoom H6 and compared that to the mic plugged straight into the camera, you couldn't tell the difference. I may do a video in the future whenever I get my audio rig squared away.
11 - Thank you Nigel.. LOL
Cheers for the review.
:-)
Due to the fact that maybe it won’t be possible to attach my RODE M3 mic to the transmitter as this mic has a larger diameter, do you think it would be possible to connect the microphone via an extender (e.g. XLR to XLR cable, one meter) while the transmitter is attached to my belt? If this is possible, it would also take some extra weight off of my hand. I don’t have the kit yet, so I should be very much obliged if you would test it with a cable and respond to my comment. Thank you in advance.
I'm not sure why you think it wouldn't fit on to the bottom of the M3, which is just a standard XLR connector as far as I know. Any (good) XLR cable will enable you to put the transmitter away from the mic and it will work just fine.
Thank you very much for your quick reply. M3 will fit just fine on the XLR connector, but as M3’s housing is thicker than an average microphone (it even has a special/non-standard RM3 stand mount that reviewers advise not to lose it), I’m afraid the locking thread will not be able to screw all the way up in order to secure it. If you care to take a look at the online manual, you will understand what I mean. Anyway, thank you again for taking the time to respond.
@@TubeShooterMag Maybe I didn’t make myself clear enough. Please check the introductory video by RODE at around three minutes and you’ll understand what I mean:

I beg your pardon, you are completely right and I had forgotten. I shall remove my earlier reply so as not to confuse anyone reading this later!
VERY GOOD review but I think you can make the video a lot shorter.
Actually, it was part of the fun. Excellent review. I am convinced. Thank you so much.
I wanted it longer!
Good review! One question...can I connect any lavalier microphone? AKG, Sennheiser...
Any lav with either an XLR or 3.5mm jack on it should work I think; some lavs have other types of connector so they wouldn't work or would need an adapter.
thanks for your reply
Good point, Spencer, thanks for adding that!
Hi, how to remove the xlr mic? any lock switch?
There is a locking nut at the top which secures the spring-loaded notch into the small hole at the base of most XLR connectors
@@TubeShooterMag Thank you.
Hi, I'm writing from Spain, thanks for your tutorials, I have a big doubt that is driving me crazy and I'm worried, I've always recorded video with DSLR Canon 5d and 7d, and I have doubts between two models to make movies, prx-x70 or Panasonic ag-ux90, and I would like to know your impressions about which to choose since I want a look or film aesthetics. By theme of codecs and other characteristics, or perhaps another model or brand of price similar or even cheaper. thank you very much
