Fujifilm Discontinued ANOTHER Film Stock

  • It's unfortunately becoming an almost annual tradition for Fujifilm. Another year passes, and we have less and less film stocks on the market from the Japanese analog film manufacturer, Fujifilm. This year we lost another option at 35mm and that was the popular Fuji Superia 400. With film's recent comeback it seems strange that we would lose one of the most popular options. Superia has been with us for years, and was one of the most widely available color negative films. There are a number of reasons Fuji is discontinuing the film and in this video we will talk about them. Also, we will talk about the broader implications for film photography as a whole.

it looks fine enough, and your content is very informative. I'm just so over talking heads photography channels. Why do photogs think people want to watch them sitting surrounded by their gear and moody LED lights? I get that it's the easiest content to produce, but that's why video essays are where it's at all over yt. If you spent a little time doing rudimentary text animation and edits for the duration of the video, cutting back to the studio for maybe 20% of it, I'm pretty sure you'd be at the top of the game quickly. You're one of the very very few film channels I still sub to, and for the effort you're putting into your scripts, I feel like you're not getting the recognition you deserve

FujiFilm as well as Kodak know that the film market is a very small portion of their overall business. I’d read somewhere that film was less than 5% of Fuji’s overall business and less than 1% of their income. The money is in industrial chemicals and pharmaceutical chemicals for both Fuji and Kodak. That’s right anymore Kodak is really a chemical company rather than a film company so their commitment to film is to be applauded. To those that weren’t happy with Harmon’s new color film just remember that in color film Kodak has a 90+ year head start

Hopefully Harman can continue expanding into colour film and build on what it's done with Phoenix 200. But Fuji's retreat from the market is a real loss in expertise, the scale of production and competitive pressure on price. Kodak has never been shy in its corporate history about flexing its market dominance.
I'll continue to shoot film. But I mainly stick to black and white these days.

I bought a roll each of Superia 200 and Superia X-Tra 400 from Downtown Camera in Toronto 1 day before Fujifilm made this announcement. These were my first rolls of Japan-made Fujifilm and I loved them more than Gold and Ultramax. It’s so sad that we’re losing such great film stocks.

The only "competitor" Kodak has right now is called digital photography. I know it's not the same but they should be wary of rising prices far too high, since people have no real "need" to shoot film and they're already pushing too far for young people to afford film anymore. If you're forced to pay 20€ for a roll of Portra 400, they'll end up pushing everyone out.

    • @stratocactus
      @stratocactus 3 місяці тому +1

Exactly. I started shooting film in 2021 and thought colour neg was already expensive. Nowadays, I just shoot what's left in my freezer and then no more colour film photography for me. I shoot colour with my Fuji X-Pro2 and get pretty good "film like" pictures. Film will be exclusively B&W from nom on.

Not to brag at all. I think I do well, I'm supposed to be in the top 3% salary of my country. I shoot film but sometimes spending 30 usd for a portra or 20 for a kodak gold (both on 120) seems excesive even though I can afford it, hell, since I began shooting film almost 3 years ago I've only shot 5 rolls of 120 portra, the rest are mostly kodak gold or fuji h400. It is JUST TOO MUCH MONEY. Kodak is pushing everyone out, particularly the "low end". I keep very few kodak golds in my stock but the rest are now Shanghai 100 and other cheap stuff, I'm done with the 30-40 usd a piece.

I quit being disappointed with Fuji a decade ago. I came to peace with the fact that Fuji's film business was on the way out and it was a matter of when not if. The loss of Neopan 400 basically killed Fuji to me. It would be nice if they would turn over their processes for making Neopan, 400h, etc. to someone else but I suspect that Fuji, like most companies, will take the position that the fans of their film products can pound sand. My personal recommendation is 1. learn to love b&w because it will likely stick around longer and 2. make sure you have a digital camera you can shoot your favorite lenses on.

I got late to the film party (so no slide film) but I loved Fuji Pro 400H, the one roll I got. Right know I am shooting with Superia 200. But my favorite rolls ever are first Lomochrome Metropolis, and second Ektar 100. At least Fujifilm involved their rich heritage so the engineers that worked in the films worked too in the film simulations, which I understand try to reach the pure goals of the engineers/designers without the limitations that get introduced when developing and scanning film, which are part of their charm.

From what I've heard, they've been selling frozen stocks since 2016, mirroring the original Polaroid strategy from the early 2000s.
Also remember that Fujifilm's Instax is re-shaped / re-branded Kodak Instamatic film! They bought the machines and a license from Polaroid ater Polaroid sued Kodak over it. So Fuji and Kodak have had business together for a long time

I could not think of a better place than Rochester NY that has over 140 years of film manufacturing heritage for film to continue into whatever future it holds. I’m fully onboard with the idea of more competition and lowering prices but let’s be serious, Kodak is still fully involved with film and trying their best to meet the new demand. Fuji is clearly being run by a bunch of bean counters who could care less about film so if that is the case, go Kodak!

This is so sad. I have love for Kodak of course. But lack of serious competition is bad for the scene overall. Yes Kodak offer a wide range of speeds and formats, no complaints here but when a market is as dominated by one player as the film market is that’ll lead to increasingly higher prices and less innovation. Ektachrome and Velvia are already £25 a roll. Thank God for Ilford just plugging away with a smaller range but decent prices.

Back in 2013, Fujifilm's last CEO was being interviewed and he stated very bluntly that "film photography is irrelevant." When I read that, thats all I needed to know about their internal attitudes towards analog film. No surpise they have been discontinuing and outsourcing their film since. I wrote a scathing letter to them about this and they continue to ignore me. Film photographers just accept the fact that Fujifilm is no longer FujiFILM. Its Fujigital. Their cameras all suck too. Sony and Nikon all have better digital cameras.

@@Overexposed1 "but you don't shoot your kid's graduation on Purple." And so, you severely underestimate the sheer vastness of my stupidity. Jokes aside, I get what you mean, but if we don't support Harman/Orwo/Adox now, we won't have anything usable for regular stuff besides Kodak; maybe we might even add Ferrania/Lucky Film to that list in the near future.

Anything in low demand will have a high price. People should just face the truth: Film is dead. The future is digital and there is no way back. The same applies to audio. Vinyl is too expensive and will disappear.
