Here's the hindsight post I probably should have made for you when you started this. Server (and often Workstation) boards have a tiny computer on-board your computer, so you can both remotely manage and poweroff/on the computer. This is the IPMI system, and it provides a full (albeit incredibly basic) GPU for the system. They often also have remote keyboard video and mouse, so you can manage the server console remotely too (This is the iKVM). The on-board GPU is also exposed to the operating system underneath, so you can boot a barebones server without a discrete GPU installed, especially useful in blade or 1U server systems. This has been a standard part of servers and server motherboards since at least 2010, probably much before that.
When you plug in the computer, the IPMI system will boot, using it's on-board graphics (connected to the VGA port) and USB connectors and start initializing on-board and PCIe devices, checking CPU and memory, detecting connected hard-drives and RAID arrays and the like. This is what the LED dance is, incidentally, it's the IPMI running it's (very slow, as it's not got a fast CPU yet) boot process and POSTing. You can also watch the IPMI boot process and interact with it while it happens, using PS/2 (if available) or USB and the VGA port. You can't actually start the system 'til the IPMI is booted and ready, so first poweron boots are very slow, but servers are meant to be powered on 24/7, so this initial slow first boot is accepted.
Once the IPMI is done checking everything, and everything's passed checks, it starts waiting for connections on the network, or for a signal from the front panel connectors to start up the computer proper. The system isn't booted at this point, it's still powered off, so the PCIe card isn't initialized yet, hence no signal (and seemingly no POST). Chances are the IPMI had detected an issue on startup, and was trying to tell you about it on the VGA port, but you weren't watching there. :D
The error message you were getting with certain (AMD?) GPUs was that the IPMI couldn't access the framebuffer of the GPU, so it can't initialize the display for the remote control system. If you disable the iKVM in the IPMI BIOS, that message will go away, though you do lose the capability to remote control the system (not that you're using it anyway) and you should then be able to use any card you like.

Heres some things I've learned while doing so that might help others:
    1. Always use the mesozoic period port for basic setup, then add all the extra hardware like pcie devices later.
    2. You can use any GPU you want if you keep the onboard video enabled. Only downside is that will only get an output once windows is loaded, so you'll have to connect to the VGA port to get post information and change bios setting but that usually isnt an issue once everything is setup.

The IPMI IP address of the board depends on your network setup. You can get the IP address by opening your router config webpage and checking there. The board also needs to use the VGA for getting into the BIOS because it's a server board with IPMI that has a built in GPU that is usually set as primary as default settings in the BIOS and the jumper as you found out, this is standard in server hardware.
The GPU also does not work on the second slot probably because of some primary GPU setting in the BIOS. Most Supermicro boards also set the bottom most full-length slot as the primary GPU by default.

@DawidDoesTechStuff Before you run out and buy a lot of 3200 MHz memory for this system i will recommend you to read the manual again. First to be able to support 3200 MHz it have to be a revision 2.x motherboard and still then it will not run at 3200 MHz as that need Epyc 7002 cpu's and you got the Epyc 7001 model so max for this setup will be 2666 MHz.
Page 31 and 32 of the manual explains this.
You can also try to swap the position of jumpers JI2C1/JI2C2 so if they are enabled then try to disable then and if disabled then enable them and try the other GPU's in the system again. The jumpers there are the PCI SMB (System Management Bus) jumpers and the manual talk about improve system management for the PCI slots if they are enabled.
You can find them in the jumperrow down by the sdcard. Page 44 in the Manual takls about this.

Okay, I want to address some of your frustration here. You're dealing with a server motherboard, which features IPMI, as one person already pointed out. One of key features of IPMI is KVM - basically, you can interact with a virtual display, mouse, keyboard and media over the network through IPMI. For that to work, all the video should be routed through IPMI chip, that ASPEED thing in the bottom left corner, which also mirrors it into onboard VGA port. This is the default behaviour for a server motherboard. If video gets routed through external graphics - IPMI can no longer capture video output and route it over network. Servers usually never get physical displays plugged in them at all - all they need is power and Ethernet to IPMI port.

  • @javentesla7164
    @javentesla7164 Рік тому +3

Pro tip: Dual cpu workstation/server motherboards are always super picky about where certain PCIecards are installed due to how the PCIe lanes are divided between each CPU. On the Asus Z9PE-D8 the 7x (full size 16x) PCIe are divided between each CPU but not like how you'd imagine. Be sure to always look at the block diagram of the system to figure out how the PCIe lanes are allocated to each CPU.

As for the video card, I'm not sure how your board work but it may be a bios settings you can change or you might need a bios update to try but also some vendors are known to put a white list of device id's they allow to work on their board and may even require a modified bios to even accept something else.

You might want to check the motherboard manual also, the slot you weren't getting video with might have been tied to the CPU you didn't have installed. You were also gimping the CPU's hard by only using 1 stick of ram because of how the CPU > memory worked with gen 1 Epyc.

I built the exact same system a couple of weeks ago, in a Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2.
Even bought the mobo from the same ebay vendor, same package and ducktape lol.
    Build Notes:
I did not use a torque wrench and it worked out fine.
Buy A LOT OF THERMAL PASTE.
If you ever get a H11DSi, you need a VGA monitor/adapter, as the board will default to booting the internal gpu.
You have to connect the igpu, go into bios and set the perfered display output to EXTERNAL, then afterwards disable the internal gpu with a jumper on the motherboard.
Bought a bunch of used server ram in bulk, worked out fine, just buy more than needed in case some are dead on arrival (i had one dead)
I'm using TR4 360MM AIO's for cooling, as they are dirt cheap now and the SP3 and TR4 sockets are physically identical, mounting wise.

I wonder if he left the OPROM set to legacy instead of EFI for the slot the GPU got plugged into. I'm pretty sure modern consumer GPU's from AMD and Nvidia get a bit snakey in legacy mode. The way you screw in the socket for an epyc cpu (the way we do, at our company, we build lots of epyc and xeon servers) is to tighten them to a full stop (as they are designed to) in written order, and that's all

For the new SP5 EPYCs, we've bought a couple torque drivers, though. But not for the socket, for the cooler. And even there I'm not convinced that it's required.

The Mesozoic Era is the second-to-last era of Earth's geological history, lasting from about 252 to 66 million years ago, comprising the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. It is characterized by the dominance of archosaurian reptiles, such as the dinosaurs; an abundance of gymnosperms, and ferns; a hot greenhouse climate; and the tectonic break-up of Pangaea. The Mesozoic is the middle of the three eras since complex life evolved: the Paleozoic, the Mesozoic, and the Cenozoic. The era began in the wake of the Permian-Triassic extinction event, the largest well-documented mass extinction in Earth's history, and ended with the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, another mass extinction whose victims included the non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, mosasaurs, and plesiosaurs. The Mesozoic was a time of significant tectonic, climatic, and evolutionary activity.

Had a situation once where i was teaching some new guys how to disassemble and reassemble a blade and when we booted it, only half of the RAM was showing, because they were a bit too gentle and the CPU didn't make full contact.
