The technical content is what I'm here for and we certainly got that! Seems the dealer tech was so near yet so far from finding the fault, having missed something pulling the data line high

Watching this bought back memories, I remember in 2007 (GM) Holden here in Australia were replacing ABS modules for free as they were dropping like flies(I had quite a few in cars of my own but the amount of customers cars that were coming in with dead ABS Modules was huge! Thanks Keith!

Thank you very much for this video. My 2005 Cadillac cts does not have one large splice pack. They are all over the car. When you explained that pin 2 on the DLC fed to the class2 serial bus a lightbulb lit and now I can open the splice paks and trace what is pulling all the modules down. You just got another subscriber.

Great video! Electrical is tough to diagnose with out experience, I remember when I started out learning I had something of a similar issue and I figured out on my own with class 2 was to jump each terminal like you did to see what was communicating and what was causing the issue. I even learned that sometimes you can save yourself time on GM High speed Lan using a 60 ohm resistor and disconnecting modules that have a terminating resistor in it to see if communication is brought back online by jumping the + and - lines with the resistor. Also used that method to bypass a customers malfunctioning onstar module that they did not want to replace because they don't use it but they wanted their car fixed!
A fantastic job! THAT is a great way to "make the system work for you," by applying the signal to each module on the Class 2 data line. I'm gonna keep this video just for that. I didn't notice where the Class 2 originated from, but using the signal worked! I've only seen C.A.N. problems in modules. Sometimes it's just dirty connector. You are the best! Great Video!

This video in particular should be required watching for bosses, trainers, instructors, etc. When I was starting out everyone was freaking out about CAN. Acting like network communication diagnosis was the most advanced thing ever. The Final Dungeon Boss! Dun dun dun! Like you'd have to program it or know individually what all the packets meant. It's not some big scary monster. 99% of the time it's no different than diagnosing a faulty 5v ref circuit... As always, awesome video!

Nice diagnosis Keith. That dealership should be ashamed they couldn't fix that b/c it's basic isolation & then attempting communication with each module independently. Even if someone doesn't have any test equipment they can still disconnect the modules on the comm line and see if any are affecting the comm signal and would have found the EBCM. The comm buss bar (comb) makes it so much easier there is really no excuse for them not finding it especially with a factory scan tool and then they probably charged the customer for the labor even though they didn't fix it...at least that's what the dealerships do around here. Great video Keith and hopefully the car is fixed and back to the owner.
+Hayward's Automotive they charged 410 for the wiring repair and mandatory lift fees . Yes the car went there running and left on the hook . They never put on paper what they found to be the direct fault , they simply wrote that there were many and that the vehicle would not be cost efficient to continue with from their perspective. They were actually bailing on the job because of the cb radio that the security company installed. Which btw is nowhere near a single wire used for class 2 or Can network. They should be ashamed , but they won't be. Someone got their flat rate hours and moved on with life
It's flippin crazy. I get customers all the time that get ripped off by dealerships and after I fix their car they still go back to them and get ripped again...I don't get it. I don't get it how they can charge someone and replace parts that don't fix the problem b/c they diagnosed it wrong and charge them for the parts and labor and the car leaves still broke and they bring it back and they get charged again...it's insane. HAHA insane is when you do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.
The dealership did an absolutely brutal job here. Keeping the car for 4 months and not figuring out it was one bad module? And then butchering up the wiring on that splice pack in the process? (Any idea what the hell they actually did to splice the wires under the gobs of electrical tape?) I guess if they didn't have a lab scope and were just following the OEM flowcharts that may have led them to a dead end, but surely they could have done a better job than that.

As far as too expensive to fix, it may be the high cost of a new anti lock/ traction control module, servo install at dealer prices. I got a $1000 quote on a Buick traction control unit once. But they didn't know that was even the problem. Great diagnosis.
+William Fowler My price on the module is $460 , no hydraulics needed . So I would be amazed at what the labor could've been on this that put it over the top in their eyes
New Level Auto.. Awesome video. Very well explained. I have an 08 GMC Sierra giving me fits right now with a no crank no start issue. Has a couple of loss communication codes.. Was running fine to spite the 310,000 miles. Drove to Home Depot to get lumber, got back in and it was dead. No gauge sweep, all warning lights on but that's it..

Probably my only question is why they would call you out at 11+ for a solution, when it's been in the dealership for 4 mths? I just organise them to be transported to me the next day. For 300 dollars, www.autoenginuity.com/ works good for me. A little slow. I have GM, Toyota, Ford modules on mine. It cost around $700. Of course this does not include the cost of a laptop.
Fantastic diagnostics Keith and a great job in finding the root cause of the issue. I have a Tech 2 scanner also and the class 2 message monitor is a really nice feature. Man for you to stay out at 11:45 PM you must really love what you're doing! 😃 👍

Excellent work very outstanding communication skills , to be able to make the viewer fell as if they are there with you . From this video in particular i have learnt so much this one video so far to me felt like you answered a thousand questions . There teachers and then there are educators you are in a very elite class my friend . I have taken notice on your diagnostic approach , one you give it a visual , two you scanned the vehicle , three you separated the hybrid communication network and then you zeroed in on the root cause as i have seen it , if i am wrong please let me know . I feel there is more to learn from this video but I have not seen it as of yet and i can not thank you enough for this video i can see the force runs strong with you and thanks again .
Great video bro! I had a Saturn vue with a bad ABS module that lost comm. intermittently. And that car came from the dealer too. The same module that you are changing I change. I guess those ABS module have problems. You need to go home and stop working night. 😁😁 And I should take my own advice too. 🤣 I like this video. Keep them coming.
Keith it's amazing how you concentrate so well that late in the day. The dealer technicians have access to engineers in Detroit that can help them solve this problem. obviously they could not come to a solution. you take this job on at 11 p.m., 20 cars deep into your day, you find the solution in less than 10 minutes. +DaveSender66 I'll be trying to make more like these for everyone , but lighting becomes the issue when I try and do these late in the evening. On top of which you know as well as I do that night in NYC means keeping one eye over your shoulder at all times. Daytime is too hectic with phone calls and would cause me to stop repeatedly . So looks like night will win out for now.
So, in summary. The antilock brake module was, because of something askew inside, sending a voltage that was to high to the class two com line. That caused the theft deterrent to kill the starter command. However the pcm was online and communicating. If cranked, would the car have started? If not, then anything that affects the class two or the other com line will bring the whole system down and it crashes, causing a no start. Like the 5 volt reference in Scanner Danner videos. I never even knew there was a buss bar thingamagic. Very informative. Now I know why Ivan and Eric r always seeking u out. And lastly, the two tools really necessary were knowledge of the buss and a wiring diagram allowing u to identify abnormal comm voltage and the source of it by the process of elimination.?
+Bill Rimmer Theft deterrent requires Bcm to be able to speak to the ecm. This would never have cranked without it. A scope or graphing meter would be ideal in this situation . A volt meter would have been misleading . Diagram is always a key component and should be looked at as a road map before even going near the vehicle for an electrical problem. Let me know if I missed anything there

As far as too expensive to fix, it may be the high cost of a new anti lock/ traction control module, servo install at dealer prices. I got a $1000 quote on a Buick traction control unit once. But they didn't know that was even the problem. Great diagnosis.
+William Fowler My price on the module is $460 , no hydraulics needed . So I would be amazed at what the labor could've been on this that put it over the top in their eyes

New Level Auto.. Awesome video. Very well explained. I have an 08 GMC Sierra giving me fits right now with a no crank no start issue. Has a couple of loss communication codes.. Was running fine to spite the 310,000 miles. Drove to Home Depot to get lumber, got back in and it was dead. No gauge sweep, all warning lights on but that's it..
You guys are very intelligent. O's head has swollen since the early YT vids though. Used to watch him only. Just started watching your vids. Awesome knowledge. I really love Ivan though. He's my guy.

Good job Keith. Comm problems are fun! Had a bus while back I had to replace the entire top 1939 harness that connected the dpim and the Ess battery pack. That was about 20 ft of wire.🙂

For 300 dollars, www.autoenginuity.com/ works good for me. A little slow. I have GM, Toyota, Ford modules on mine. It cost around $700. Of course this does not include the cost of a laptop.
Best $300 scan tool I believe will be the Launch Easydiag 2.0 plus.

Fantastic diagnostics Keith and a great job in finding the root cause of the issue. I have a Tech 2 scanner also and the class 2 message monitor is a really nice feature. Man for you to stay out at 11:45 PM you must really love what you're doing! 😃 👍

Excellent work very outstanding communication skills , to be able to make the viewer fell as if they are there with you . From this video in particular i have learnt so much this one video so far to me felt like you answered a thousand questions . There teachers and then there are educators you are in a very elite class my friend . I have taken notice on your diagnostic approach , one you give it a visual , two you scanned the vehicle , three you separated the hybrid communication network and then you zeroed in on the root cause as i have seen it , if i am wrong please let me know . I feel there is more to learn from this video but I have not seen it as of yet and i can not thank you enough for this video i can see the force runs strong with you and thanks again .

Great video bro! I had a Saturn vue with a bad ABS module that lost comm. intermittently. And that car came from the dealer too. The same module that you are changing I change. I guess those ABS module have problems.
You need to go home and stop working night. 😁😁 And I should take my own advice too. 🤣 I like this video. Keep them coming.

Keith it's amazing how you concentrate so well that late in the day. The dealer technicians have access to engineers in Detroit that can help them solve this problem. obviously they could not come to a solution. you take this job on at 11 p.m., 20 cars deep into your day, you find the solution in less than 10 minutes. You mind sharing your thought process in another video? Nice work Keith! !!!!!
+DaveSender66 I'll be trying to make more like these for everyone , but lighting becomes the issue when I try and do these late in the evening. On top of which you know as well as I do that night in NYC means keeping one eye over your shoulder at all times. Daytime is too hectic with phone calls and would cause me to stop repeatedly . So looks like night will win out for now.

Keith is taking vehicle diagnostics to a new level. I like the name "New Level Diagnostics". What about "New Level Auto Diagnostics"?

So, in summary. The antilock brake module was, because of something askew inside, sending a voltage that was to high to the class two com line. That caused the theft deterrent to kill the starter command. However the pcm was online and communicating. If cranked, would the car have started? If not, then anything that affects the class two or the other com line will bring the whole system down and it crashes, causing a no start. Like the 5 volt reference in Scanner Danner videos. I never even knew there was a buss bar thingamagic. Very informative. Now I know why Ivan and Eric r always seeking u out. And lastly, the two tools really necessary were knowledge of the buss and a wiring diagram allowing u to identify abnormal comm voltage and the source of it by the process of elimination.?
+Bill Rimmer Theft deterrent requires Bcm to be able to speak to the ecm. This would never have cranked without it. A scope or graphing meter would be ideal in this situation . A volt meter would have been misleading . Diagram is always a key component and should be looked at as a road map before even going near the vehicle for an electrical problem. Let me know if I missed anything there
