I appreciate that Frank rarely takes the easy way. Almost every project has an element of risk, discovery or uncharted territory. Some new process or a different way of achieving an outcome he's done previously a different way. We get to enjoy the ride!
Frank, I love the undulating shape of the bowl with the spikey-ness! It's not what I usually expect to see in one of your projects. Also any time I get to hear "bed goes up/bed goes down" is a good day.
For some reason I get the impression that Frank likes Spikey things. That Spiked Bowl looks like it belongs on the set of a Star Wars movie! Nice work Frank...👍👍😂😂😉😉
@@kenklose Considering that the original Super Mario Bros. came out almost 36 years ago. Frank most likely played the original game. Not to mention he has two children who most likely know of Super Mario Bros. Lastly, he uses an SNES controller to control his CNC machine.
Great work as always Frank! I think the beauty of this iteration of your spike bowls is, like you said, the sensation that the spikes are arising or protruding out of the main body of the bowl, rather than just being attached to the surface, this subtle effect gives the piece a certain holistic beauty.
4:19 Bed goes up! 😂👍You should have this Homer sound played live when you change the CNC's bed position 😁 Very nice project by the way! Makes me think of a chestnut shell
I know I seen this object as a child while watching the Flintstones. I think someone was wearing it as a hat...😀 Really fun project to watch Frank. Thank you! V
That is so incredibly cool. Such a unique piece. I think the rim of the bowl looks really cool to where it has that wavy form from the CNC carving. Another great project Frank.
I really like how your carving almost made a flower shape in the opening of the bowl. I am not a woodworker at all, but I really enjoy watching what you make.
I've watched so many of your videos and I like your work generally, but for some reason I LOVE this and the other spiky bowl. I don't know what it is. They just really do it for me.
Truly an inspiration to all of us that have far less skill than the "master". With the power carver you could attempt another legged bowl by carving the excess around the legs - the legs being integral with the bowl instead of having to glue on the legs
Frank I've been following you on here for a couple of years. It's been really cool to see your progress as a maker but your commitment to excellence across all domains has been really inspiring. Half the time I click because I want to see the wooden artifact you've made but the other half I click because I want to see the artistry in your video production. The little things you do, like in this one with the stop motion screws @7:40 , the squeaking sound effects, fading the bandsaw noise in before you show the shots, it so rad. I've been trying to make better videos lately so I think I am just starting to appreciate what has 'naturally' drawn me into your channel for a long time. I know this all takes A LOT of time but I just wanted to say thanks for putting in the effort, you have a lot of qualities I aspire to have one day. Keep crushing.
You mentioned changing the 'joint' between the spikes and bowl, but what about modifying the base of the spikes? Have a transition wood that's not parallel, or more 'engineered' with some layered material. Maybe even layer up a material, turn it on the lathe, and use as spikes.... Endless possibilities!
Next time try turning the spikes on the lathe and have the CNC make a little "volcano" mount for each one, then blend them in, making them slightly imperfect. Thanks for posting, looks great.
Just amazing. I would be so afraid of grinding a hole through it when shaping the spikes. I love the freeform look. I was sorta expecting you to glue each spike while it was on the CNC then use the CNC to rough out the basic spike shape. Doing it all with the angle grinder takes talent. "Bed goes up" is always good for a laugh.
Wow. I think this is now my favorite bowl that you made. I also love how the spikes are not perfect. They look really organic as opposed to perfect round cones that you made before. I definitely want to see you do more carving in the future!
What a cool piece. I loved the music you had at the end. Perfect for it. Edit: Great fruit bowl for durians, if it weren’t for the smell. Maybe dragonfruit.
Arbortech does make a smaller disc for carving but you need the adapter for your grinder. King Arthur tools has the merlin 2 which is essentially a mini grinder for 1" disks. Love how the bowl turned out. 👌
It would be really interesting to see what happens with more complexity in the spike blanks. Like if the spike blanks themselves had a pattern assembled from two or three colors of wood.
Looks amazing. Really an excellent piece. Next consider "segmented" spikes on a segmented so that the boundary between the two materials might be blurred even more.
this is incredible i really love this piece! i love the mix of a prehistoric or pre schooler aesthetic eith the fine craftsmanship of woodworking and beautiful wood! the only thing i dislike is the yellow finish! i love a pale blond wood.
I was really bummed at first when you decided to sand it down, but once I saw the result I was really impressed! Both options looked good, but I think you're right to go with the smoother option since that fits more with the things you make.
Wow this is truly one of your best bowls. It looks sooooooo cool. Great idea. Would love to see more projects by you that are a bit more "imperfect" and organic looking.
This is what hits you when you are in first place.
He should paint it blue
Yeah my favorite bowl he has made. Very interesting and not like anything I've ever seen.
Mario cart racing??
@@nline2blast722 that's where my head went too. heh.
Definitely a Koopa shell.
Homer saying "bed goes up" "bed goes down" cracks me up everytime
I’m so glad he’s stuck with it all this time.
I was so happy when I heard that.
I love this as well keep it up Frank.
It was the first time I heard it and I’ve been watching his vids for a few years now.
Doesn’t get old. Love it.
As a group the Maker's Mob has some of the best production values, cleanest knowledge and subltest humor
such a cool project! also my favorite running gag on this channel is definitely "bed goes up - bed goes down"
Looks to me like a half, oversized chestnut. I really like it!
I appreciate that Frank rarely takes the easy way. Almost every project has an element of risk, discovery or uncharted territory. Some new process or a different way of achieving an outcome he's done previously a different way. We get to enjoy the ride!
Really like the balance you struck between precision and free-form design. I think this is a piece that both myself and my fiance could really enjoy
I loved the rough look, but once you smoothed the bowl out it elevated the piece into Art. Thanks so much for sharing your work.
Please tell me you tried it on as a hat at least once 😊
Love the 'bed goes up...' comment. Like an easter egg for all those that were there when the lifting table was constructed :-)
Bed goes up. Bed goes down. Great work Frank. Thanks.
This is very close to being a koopa shell from Mario.
A spiny shell you mean :D
Came here to say this. Now I want to make one.
Beat me to it. But yes! I wonder if you could match the colours from the game with the correct wood and finish?
I see half of a sticky bomb from Team Fortress 2
Thought the same thing!
I love it, Frank. I love how bizarre it seems at first, and yet how it could still be functional in the right context.
I love the progression from the 1st spiked bowl. I could tell you did too, Frank... you really mooved forward.
Stunning.I love not only the organic feel of this piece, but also the method by which you achieved said result.
You are a really creative guy. Please don't stop sharing your projects. Thanks a lot and take care!
I gotta give it to you Frank, your dedication to the "Bed goes up, bed goes down" gag is phenomenal.
Frank, I love the undulating shape of the bowl with the spikey-ness! It's not what I usually expect to see in one of your projects. Also any time I get to hear "bed goes up/bed goes down" is a good day.
the extra long glamour shot at the end was appreciated!
one of the best looking bowl you have ever made. I would like to have one like this staying on my table.
That's stunning, Frank. Really, really beautiful.
I love these prehistoric spike bowls
frank got more bowls than Kellogg's taste testing dept
Kelloggs must be eating out of this bowl then :P
Power carving always seems to result in an organic shape. I really need to try it sometime. Thanks for sharing!
For some reason I get the impression that Frank likes Spikey things. That Spiked Bowl looks like it belongs on the set of a Star Wars movie! Nice work Frank...👍👍😂😂😉😉
I love this bowl. You are a wonderful person Frank.
I think this might be my favorite bowl you’ve made
All I see is Bowser from Super Mario Brothers. LOVE IT!!
He probably doesn't even know Super Mario. But can you imagine how viral this video would go if he played up the Bowser angle?
@@kenklose Considering that the original Super Mario Bros. came out almost 36 years ago. Frank most likely played the original game. Not to mention he has two children who most likely know of Super Mario Bros. Lastly, he uses an SNES controller to control his CNC machine.

Very nice project by the way! Makes me think of a chestnut shell
I like the spikes and the technique used to grind too combine the bowl and spikes.
This is the nicest and certainly the most interesting bowl I've seen you make.
I know I seen this object as a child while watching the Flintstones. I think someone was wearing it as a hat...😀 Really fun project to watch Frank. Thank you! V
I suddenly have an overwhelming desire to see you and Bobby Duke collaborate.
If Johnny Rotten had a cherry bowl....
It's beautiful Sir!
That turned out much better than I expected. Also Homer's cameo will never get old. I laugh every time.
Perfect application for a King Arthur carving disc. It has holes in it and you can see where you're carving through the blade.
That is so incredibly cool. Such a unique piece. I think the rim of the bowl looks really cool to where it has that wavy form from the CNC carving. Another great project Frank.
The "bed goes up bed goes down" bit is my favorite thing on the internet
I really like how your carving almost made a flower shape in the opening of the bowl. I am not a woodworker at all, but I really enjoy watching what you make.
That bowl looks so interesting--it's fantastic.
Bowser is running around the mushroom kingdom naked as you now have his shell. Beautiful!
I've watched so many of your videos and I like your work generally, but for some reason I LOVE this and the other spiky bowl. I don't know what it is. They just really do it for me.
I just love the poppearances at the start of your videos, Frank.
Your dedication to the Homer Simpson bit is nearly as impressive as your dedication to your craft overall. Thanks for the quality content!
Truly an inspiration to all of us that have far less skill than the "master". With the power carver you could attempt another legged bowl by carving the excess around the legs - the legs being integral with the bowl instead of having to glue on the legs
So happy you have taken up making weird bowls again (: It was looking awesome basically every step of the way.
Fun project. Lots of power carving.
Looking forward to seeing you in a museum one day :)
Great work and the choice of tool to create chips over dust much better.
this is one of the best bowls you've made
I love the nod to older videos how he always includes the soft voice clip from homer when he raises and lowers the table segment.
So glad to hear still the “bed goes up” 😀
How you don’t have a million subs by now is beyond me, such a great channel!

Nice work, I liked it with the blocky legs as well.
Very cool project, Frank! It looked for a moment as though you were making a sort of wooden stone with "crystals" poking out in situ.
Definitely interesting. I have been to many AAW symposiums. Never saw one like this in the galleries. Nice work. Lots of sanding.
Looks like the shell of a horse chestnut, very cool.
Beautiful bowl!!
Next time try turning the spikes on the lathe and have the CNC make a little "volcano" mount for each one, then blend them in, making them slightly imperfect. Thanks for posting, looks great.
wonderful work so nice you let Homer in your shop. can't get more random than that
Fabulous idea. Yes it would have been interesting to come through the bowl, but this result is also wonderful.
Just amazing. I would be so afraid of grinding a hole through it when shaping the spikes. I love the freeform look. I was sorta expecting you to glue each spike while it was on the CNC then use the CNC to rough out the basic spike shape. Doing it all with the angle grinder takes talent.

Looks like green chestnut. Awesome!
I love the form of the piece it looks very natural an organic, great piece buddy.
Wow. I think this is now my favorite bowl that you made.
I also love how the spikes are not perfect. They look really organic as opposed to perfect round cones that you made before.
I definitely want to see you do more carving in the future!
Wow. My favorite bowl by far. It's like those annoying spiky ball things that fall from trees.
That is a good one. Very organic looking
Beautiful bowl! So happy you still have “Bed goes up” every time haha my favorite
That's a truly unique and beautiful piece Frank. Thanks for the video!
I absolutely love this! Your creativity is why I keep coming back for more! Thanks for sharing! 👏🤟
Always amazed by your work. Can not understand why your subscriber count is not too the moon by now.
What a cool piece. I loved the music you had at the end. Perfect for it.
Edit: Great fruit bowl for durians, if it weren’t for the smell. Maybe dragonfruit.
I SO do not have this kind of vision or creativity...great project !

Love how the bowl turned out. 👌
It would be really interesting to see what happens with more complexity in the spike blanks. Like if the spike blanks themselves had a pattern assembled from two or three colors of wood.
I love the "roughness" of this iteration! The finished bowl reminds me of a chestnut shell. Again, an amazing video!
The progression of your spiked projects, this was really well done.
Looks amazing. Really an excellent piece. Next consider "segmented" spikes on a segmented so that the boundary between the two materials might be blurred even more.
yes
i like this much more than the last spike bowl!
An idea to hold the bowl down while carving is hot melt glue. It can be removed later with no damage to the wood.
Awesom as always!! And I can’t help but smile every time I hear Homer!!
This is my favorite bowl you’ve made so far! Very inspiring with using the CNC as a kind of advanced drill press of sorts.
This was amazing to watch...I look forward to figure designs.
this is incredible i really love this piece! i love the mix of a prehistoric or pre schooler aesthetic eith the fine craftsmanship of woodworking and beautiful wood! the only thing i dislike is the yellow finish! i love a pale blond wood.
It always amazes me what projects you conjure up Frank! The end result is just fantastic!
This is an incredible piece Frank. I'd buy something like this for sure if you put them up for sale.
I was really bummed at first when you decided to sand it down, but once I saw the result I was really impressed! Both options looked good, but I think you're right to go with the smoother option since that fits more with the things you make.
Homer insert (per usual) is SPECTACULARLY funny ... caught me off guard too ... ;)
Easily one of the coolest things you've made
Really neat combination of processes, I love power carving with my Arbortech disks and I love this idea, really nice, super unique, well done!
Looks like a giant dried Horse-chestnut, i like it. :D
You know, I wasn't sure how I felt about this until right near then end, I but I love it. Looks like a spikey chestnut casing. Thanks Frank
Beautiful piece of art. I'd gladly watch a video about how you made it! :-)
Frank, is may be my favourite bowl you've ever made on this channel 😍
You are the king of interesting pieces!!
Wow this is truly one of your best bowls. It looks sooooooo cool. Great idea. Would love to see more projects by you that are a bit more "imperfect" and organic looking.
