You don't have to apologize for the tears. Season 6 of Buffy is one of the most thorough explorations of depression and existential despair on any media. I have cried to a considerable amount of Buffy moments, especially season 6 (my favorite season). It is that powerful.

I've been watching BTVS since it first aired, and I watch it start to finish once a year. I never get tired of just how great the show this show is in its constant character development. And I love watching others experience its magic for the first time. Your commentary is spot on, and don't apologise for the tears. . . anyone who loves this show does the same no matter how many times they watched it.

I'll back you up on that. Been watching since it aired, and still to this day find the dialogue funny and on point. Slight shame how some people let their lives go - but... people live their own lives. I have a few "Go To" series. Buffy is one. B5. Oddly, Sabrina the Teenage Witch (the new one). Battlestar, but that gets annoying. Willow was 20 years ahead of her time. Even now that character would be a problem.

I totally disagree with anyone justifying Giles' decision to leave. When someone has a broken leg, you don't say "I'm not going to help you, because then you will never learn to run." You nurse them back to health, and then set them free to learn to run.
Buffy is suffering from acute depression. It's a struggle for her to even get out of bed in the morning. She needs help. You don't leave a person in such a state.

Wrecked is of course a pivotal episode, where we see addiction to magic overcoming Willow, and to some extent Buffy as well with her addiction to sex with Spike, even though she hates herself for doing it. S6 is such a departure from the earlier Seasons, as due to the network change we can really see how more adult the show is in tone. Dawn becomes collateral damage in Willow's addiction, and when Willow says to Buffy in the bedroom 'it will never happen again' we just know it wont be the end of this. Great acting by Alyson Hannigan, it's hard to believe the sweet, innocent Willow from S1 could end up like this, but that is the nature of addiction. Great writing from Marti Noxon who also wrote some of the best episodes of Grey's Anatomy and Mad Men.

Such great writing to have Buffy talking to Willow, but talking ABOUT herself.
The fact that our characters are facing consequences and the reactions from their friends are realistic, both the anger AND the empathy. As you say, Buffy's empathy is very much informed by her own situation, and it is plainly obvious. Character growth, but not simple or direct or universally positive.
Love that you've so quickly identified just how toxic Buffy is being. This is something I've long recognised, but I don't feel many in the fandom truly do. It doesn't make her less heroic, doesn't make her less moral. It makes her a human dealing with something big in a LONG series of big events... and sometimes handling it badly or externalising her trauma.
And all the girls are FAR too good at crying. It's criminal that the cast didn't win multiple awards, because BvTS truly set a golden standard.

Right before Oz left the show, it really did seem like the next big arc for Willow/Oz was going to be him worrying she was using too much magic, see: Fear Itself. But then Seth Green left, the Veruca storyline got pulled forward, Willow met a fellow magic user, and that kinda got forgotten about until this season.
But if you go back to even Season 2, Giles' history with magic is like drug addiction, and there are several warnings in Becoming Part 2 that Willow starting to do spells could lead down a dark path. This has been a LONG time building.

    Hey Dakara!
How are you, luv? I hope you're well!!
I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed this extra long and chatty reaction, and all your reaction videos of Buffy and Angel so far.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my all time favorite show. I've watched it on TV when it first aired here in The Netherlands - I was about 10 or 11 y/o then - and have started collecting the complete series on DVD since I was 18 and completed that collection within 3yrs. Since then, I've rewatched it about a hundred times (not exaggerating lol) so I consider myself an OG / die-hard fan lol.
I wanted to let you know that from all the reaction channels I've found here on YT that did their Buffy reactions, your videos have resonated with me the most and made me stay to keep watching with you. Your responses are always so genuine and remind me of how it felt all those years ago when I first watched the episodes on TV and the turmoil I felt going through that, while also finding more and more appreciation for the show at the same time. The excitement I felt before a new ep would air, the impatience I felt, the feels I got every time Buffy, Willow or one of my other favorites cried... You remind me of all of what I felt back then, and still do now.
I've always had a deep love for these characters, and there is still so much now that I just adooore about this show. It helps me through the best and the hardest of times, it's been like a friend really.
And even though I know almost every line by heart, I still get the feels during watching now - 20+ yrs later.
Whenever Sarah or Aly start to cry? Forget it!! They're - like you always say - just too good at crying!
I love that you go through the motions (yes, that's a reference to the song lol) of the show as much as I did then and still do now, and every time you very at a scene, I'm right there with you. The acting and writing still move me to tears, even though I know that it's fiction. So don't ever apologize for that luv, even an "old" fan like me still gets the feels ;)
I also really love how you discuss the character development and storylines, and how you explain what you feel like it correlates with when it comes to real life problems. It's just really nice to see that even after all this time the show can still resonate with people and their daily problems now, and I love that you always seem to feel what the show was trying to convey with every episode / season / storyline.
Thanks so much for sharing your reactions, I truly enjoy them each time!!
    Big hugs from overseas! ;)

I love that this episode and the previos one were released together.
Jeff Kober, who plays Rack, also played Zachary Kralik, the vampire who tried to kill Buffy during her crucimentium.
First, let's all think about Willow S1. That's what I do around this point.
Willow's not going to get much help with said addiction from Buffy if Buffy's just self-identifying her own issues of what the two were talking about.
If I were in Buffy's position, I wouldn't let Willow be around Dawn after what she did. Especially if I had to report to Social Services. Allowing that could get Dawn taken away. Xander or the college dorms, at this point are better options of living arrangements for Willow, over Buffy potentially losing Dawn.
Tara leaving wasn't an eye-opener for Willow. But breaking Dawn's arm was.
I do find it interesting that Willow said no to someone spelled by Amy to like her after spelling Tara to no be upset with her. Both situations are the exact same. The only difference would have been the girl being spelled. The end result of sexual assualt and rape would have been the same as it was with Tara. It says Willow isn't 100% off the wagon yet in the same way Rack is or Amy might be.
I love that Dawn slaps Willow. It was deserved.
Magic is a metaphor for drugs is something I have seen some fans struggle with. But it was unofficially introduced in S1, and directly stated in S2. The show doesn't explicitly state it until _The Dark Age_ when Giles talks about how he once got high and dreams about a specific badness it led to. But an obvious argument can be made that S6 Willow is no better than Amy's mom from episode three, who is literally addicted to the magic, but it isn't stated directly.
I think Buffy should have taken Dawn home and left Willow to cry in the street or with Spike or called another person in the group to come get her. After what Willow does to Dawn, Dawn should have been Buffy's priority. Willow becomes a victim to her own addiction in this episode for the first time only because she finally takes responsibility for said issue(s). But Dawn should still be Buffy's priority. Buffy is Dawn's guardian. I also don't think Willow should be anywhere near Dawn (move out of Revello Drive) after breaking her arm.
Willow has been on a slow decline with magic and personality ever since the power of restoring Angel's soul, which culminated in this episode. Resurrecting Buffy was the point of no return that guaranteed _Smashed_ and _Wrecked_ or something similar would be Willow's arc. Metaphorically from _Becoming Part 2_ through _Bargaining Part 1_ was Willow's gateway into _Bargaining Part 2_ through this episode.

I just binged all of your Buffy content in the last few days after trying to find a new react channel and wanted to chime in on something. I’ve noticed in quite a lot of your post episode discussions you seem to apologize for getting wrapped in the emotions and for feeling strongly about these fictional characters. I think it’s admirable to be able to consume art and media and be swept away and caught up in the emotions that the creators are trying to provoke. A lot of people consume art very cynically and seem to put up a wall to avoid these types of reactions. But what is art for if not to let it move you, despite it being "not real"? Great reaction and even better commentary after the episode. Yes the episode concentrates on Willow’s addiction to magic but there a few other things to consider. When Willow returns with Amy you commented that Tara stuttered. Besides the stutter, Amber shows her acting skills by changing her body language and facial expression to be uncomfortable. Tara found her voice and inner strength with Willow and being part of a group.Addiction is the consuming need for an outside agent to satisfy a need. Tara needed Willow and with the loss of Willow she is unsettled. Amy is also messed up. She had a terrible Mother but her attitude towards her Father is messed up. And then after 3 years in a cage, she needs Rax? The season has so many sub plots but an overlooked one is the need for connections regardless of the cost and the potential loss of being an individual.

I miss Giles, too. Not sure how others see the situation, but to me, he felt like he was holding Buffy back by staying. He saw her relying on him for everything that ordinarily her mom would take care of, like parenting Dawn, and assuming he would do it all. I'm sure he was glad to help however he could, but at a certain point we all need to start that growing up process, learn to be the adult, pay the bills, deal with the hard stuff, etc. and as long as he was around to do it for her, she wouldn't ever leave that spot she's in. She would stagnate when she needs to become an adult. So as hard as it was for him to leave, he felt like he was doing this to help her continue to grow. This time, not as a Slayer, but as a human being and a teenager growing into adulthood.
I do think he should have stayed longer, though. They'd barely just found out about Buffy being in heaven -- he has to know that being back on earth would be extraordinarily difficult for her and that she'd need some emotional support for that reason.
I like what your highlighted poster said, about how if Giles had stayed and instead set better boundaries to help Buffy take on certain responsibilities and grow, that would have been much better. Totally agree.

I never thought Dawn was adding peanut butter and banana to cheese. I think she was just calling it a quesadilla because she was using tortillas and heating it up in a pan. I have made that combo many times, but crisp it up in a toaster oven.
Also, from Brits I've watched on UA-cam, when they hear about PB&J, a lot of them have an initial reaction of either skepticism or disgust. Really, a banana and peanut butter is almost the same thing - it's just sweet fruit and peanut butter.

At this point the show creates relationship for you to condemn it. Everything that was done was done for that main purpose. Unlike lot of other shows that create it mainly for love stories and smth good. That's if you want a short description of what happens, without extra analysis. Plus yes, S and B are hot.

  • @Junejane4
    @Junejane4 3 місяці тому +4

I also find it a bit of a nasty move. Since even at that time lot of people liked B/S together and not because he was a 'bad guy'. But precisely because we saw him beeing good and more human than any other vampire. He was always a special one.
He became this kind of a character who is a bad guy from the outside and he wants you to think that but he's sensitive on the inside. And you can even rely on him. They trusted him that much they left Dawn with him for this apocalyptic summer. And even Buffy trusted him enough to leave her mother and Dawn with him. Hello.
But starting from here we see a regression of all this and a character regression.
It also looks like this psychological technique when in order for someone to stop wanting smth you need to give it a lot. Like sex in this story. Because everyone saw that they had chemistry and it was sexy. So they should have lot of it. But at some point it also has to start looking bad. And that's what I don't like. Don't tell the audience what to think, what they should like and what they should not. Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean everyone else should. Trust them to form their own opinion. This season is not just some story or a show for me, it's like a lecture they recorded for you to watch. And they expect you to have the same opinion as them at the end. And I am kind of a rebel, I don't do that.

I'm happy someone finally called it out for what it is. People keep trying to rationalize this writing by pretending like this behavior was completely in character. It was completely out of character AT THIS POINT for him to be acting the way it is. It's a complete 180 used to force their opinions on the audience.

    • @Junejane4
      @Junejane4 2 місяці тому +1

@@x-man9473yes, it was all forced. And I am waiting for the moment when at least one of the reactors realizes that they've been manipulated by the plot to change their opinion about the character and his relationship with Buffy. That this season was like that only because people loved him and this couple. Like it's smth awful. So they were like 'oh, we'll show them then' and dedicated half of the season to making people like it less. I saw couple of reactors and everyone said that they liked Spike less after that even if he was their favorite. Mission accomplished I guess 🙄
It's such a shame when they deliberately trash a great character because he is popular and author has issues and can't handle that. The story doesn't benefit from that.

@@x-man9473 the other bad thing is that this affected the next season too. And not because of what they did at the end of s6 but because of what was earlier. So half of next season they are just marking time and eventually make Spike smth similar to what he was at the end of s5. So what's the point? Plus the way they showed Buffy, how violent and lost she was etc made Gellar even ask to change it and eventually she decided to stop the whole show in s7. I guess this all played it's part in it.

If you want a good film with Buffy characters - this SOUNDS crap. 2013's Sexy Evil Genius. Yes, it sounds bollocks. But its actually really good. Lots of tension! give it a go. Who ever named it should be shot. I'd have gone with "Wrath" or "9 Lives"... Even just "Revenge"... Sexy Evil Genius is just shit. Any time you have Sex in the name, it drops to porn. Anyway, that film is great - and not porn. You get Seth, Tratchunbug (tratchenberg? - Whatever), and and the pretty one from Starbucks... Must have been difficult for Seth and Trutchunhousaer.... they where on set as 12 year old and 25 year old - then in 2013 their making out in the toilet... Don't get me wrong - she's stunning. She was always the one to watch out for others, to help them now she doesn't care about Dawn, just her next 'fix'. They ruined her character for me.

Your take on Willow and her addiction is exactly the great “ trick “ or change going on with Willow since Becoming, Season 2, Episode 22. The Willow that the viewers fell in love with the first 34 episodes has not existed since she allowed the dark magic of the gypsy curse to become
Part of her being. Willow has slowly been getting slowly getting taken over by darkness and her dark desires. Willow has slowly become selfish, mean spirited.vain, a liar egotistical, and no longer trustworthy . When rewatching the series the episode Becoming also includes Willow and Spike. Giles warned Willow of the spell and that darkness could change her. Willow and the viewers think of the spell to cure Angel and make him a good guy hero again. It is not a cure but a spell based in evil for vengeance. Willow changes her body, facial expressions, and voice when the spell enters her. She tells the Scoobys she felt the spell go through her. She has now allowed a powerful dark agent to become part of her There are many clues and instances over the next few seasons. The most obvious is in Something Blue in Season 4 she is recruited to be a vengeance demon. If Willow only wanted / needed to get even, she would have been approached like Cordelia. But she has evil within and they feel that she would be at home casting vengeance like Anya did without mercy for centuries. In my opinion the writing on Willow is spot on and continues her journey into evil that she states in Becoming.
