Coria vs Nadal in Rome is the best clay court match of all time.
Andy Murray just posted that Coria was his favourite player when he was a teenager. What a compliment! Guille played only 3 seasons at the top (ended his career with ONLY 24 yrs old!), but in those 3 years he made a lot of magic. A true genius with a racquet
Didn't know that but makes sense. Andy and Guillermo are definitely my personal top 2.
He actually retired at 27, at 24 was when his career started to decline and 3 years later he retired claiming he didn't feel like competing anymore
@@gonzalotellogalvan6124 Yes, he anounced officially his retirement at 27 (2009), but if you check the stats, he barely played from 2006 onwards. Even playing challengers. In those 3 years he won just almost 15 matches (15!) and lost almost 30. In 2009 he played only ONE match (the last one). So, for me, Guille didn´t feel like competing long before 27, in fact, his last normal season was 2005 (at 23), but he tried those years to find a solution. That didn´t happen
Coria was a beast. The king of clay before rafa. Would've he had won rg 2004 we would've seen great clashes between him and rafa I think. The 2005 final in Rome against rafa was one of the greatest matches ever played.
He will always be my favorite player of all time after Federer. I had so much good memories watching him. You don’t need to win a slam to be respected. For me, Coria will always be remembered in the tennis books. Brilliant.
He won RG i think
@@Brunocapi No he did not. He was in the final of one and that one was the biggest choke in tennis history, next to Federer at wimbledon 2019
@@HBK492 you are right, i mistaken him for gaudio. And im argentinian 🤣🤣
@@HBK492 Coria´s was far worse than Federer's, he was 2-0 up. Federer's wasn't that bad, could have gone either way. He had 2 MP but many matches are turned around from MP down.
Everybody talks about Coria's choke in the 2004 French Open Final, and Federer's "choke" in the 2019 Wimbledon final, but there are certain details. Coria started to suffer leg cramps around the third set. That's enough to ruin anyone's game. And Federer didn't really choke, he just didn't make those two match points he had, and also had to deal with Novak Djokovic on the other side of the net. That's a nightmare for anybody.
But it seems that the comments are coming from people too young to remember a real choke. 1984 French Open. John McEnroe in his best season ever with a record 82-3 in matches, along with 2 Grand Slams (Wimbledon and the US Open), 13 tournament wins, and the year end championship (then called "The Masters"). He was invincible. But in Roland Garros, in the final, he was the favorite, up 2 sets to love in the third set against Lendl, got pissed off at a cameraman, and went on mental hiatus. Lendl won in 5 sets, his first big one. That final still haunts McEnroe.
Worst choke ever, and from the best player in the world at that time.
One of my favourite players up to 2004-2005. In fact, I remember watching a lot of these points live on TV. What a player he was back in the day... and his touch was the reason here in Argentina he's known as Willy "the Magician" Coria. Great compilation of points by the way!
wow Roddick applauded every single shot vs Coria on this video. Respect to him too!
Roddick wasn't one of my favorites if we talk about playing style, but I always been a fan of his behaviour on court. Keeping aside one or two fights with umpires, his career got filled with plenty of great gestures and true sportsmanship, along with wild funny moments mic in hand hahaha.
@@davidag90 yeah. I always heard ppl critizing his tecnique but the truth he was almost a champion as Safin or Hewitt (players with nice tecnique) so that speaks very well of him imo, he was a champion really
El idolo de mi infancia... Siempre me va a doler su retiro inesperado
Thanks for this ATP Tennis channel. My favourite player when I was a child. The great "magician" Coria.
Argentina has produced some great tennis players
In a pour country cause the politians are monster, is more spectacular
@@dondevivimos 'Cause the politians'. Maybe you also belong to one of those countries. 😂😂
Such a shame he lost that RG FINAL. That French Open had to be Coria’s...! Love him
Was so sure he would win that final as well. Gaudio was just too lucky that day.
@@rezaiyaz1439 Coria choked
he waas reaching number 1 . that was insane.
One of my favorite players, always wanted him to win.
It's interesting to me that Roddick won all their encounters but also applauded on *every* point Coria made against him in this video, such a true sportsman and good guy. On another note: poor Schuettler, he was no match for Coria on clay. :D
its a lot easier to applaud when you know you're going to win
@@kianfattahi4 You never know if you're going to win, that's the beauty of the sport. ;) Also Coria was a heavy challenge for anyone until ~the end of 2005.
Roddick is a paid actor
Roddick knew Coria was far more talented than him. However, he would beat him with his serve and forehand, but nothing else.
@@thehealerslm totally agree
Incredible speed, touch and angles.
thanks for this tribute to coria, he was one of my favorite players. i remember that us open match w/him vs agassi too, good stuff, but the most memorable one was the monte carlo final vs rafa
Como esperaba un video del mago coria 👍👏
GRACIAS TENNIS TV !!!!!!!
Guga tamben o grande
Yes! I was waiting for this!!
I love his signature inside-out forehand drop shot. Amazing touch.
Rainer Schüttler had one hell of year in 2003. Sad he couldnt maintain that level.
Great video!
Make another one. Coria is a tennis genius.
What a talent...
What a player! My favourite always.
Loved Guillermo as a teenager - such a great player to watch, great guile
He was awesome, so exciting to watch. Very sad when he stopped playing.
another legend in tennis
Grande Mago
Guille is a Champion in my book no matter what!
Finally! El mago
Theres probably an alternate universe somewhere where Nadal and Coria faced off in the French open final for 10 years in a row, that's genuinely how much them at their best were better than everyone else on clay.
that's a bit of an exaggeration,
between 2004 to 2014:
both Federer and Djokovic are clearly better than Coria
Ferrer is probably around the same level
Soderling is not consistent, but between 2009 to 2010 he can give anyone trouble on clay
Davydenko is pretty darn good on clay as well
so even without the mental breakdown, Coria is not gonna find much joy in those 10 years
@@lotus630 He was speaking strictly on clay. Coria won like 40 matches in a row on the surface and went toe to toe with Nadal best of 5. Not many players can say that. I don't think Federer and Djokovic are clearly better than Coria on clay at their best. Sure, they had far superior longevity and are far superior on hard courts on grass. But at their best on clay Coria is as good.
@@lotus630 Soderling maybe when he's on fire is better, but it's not like he can replicate his performance against Nadal in 2009 consistently. That type of style might work occasionally but not on a regular basis, that's why he couldn't do it again in 2010 and 2011, not even close. Ferrer is super consistent but doesn't have the weapons to trouble the big guys.
@@hernanbusso1609
everything you said about Coria being just as good as Djokovic and/or Federer on their best on clay is at best "debatable"
let's not forget during the same time that Coria was supposedly at his best and troubling Nadal, he lost to Federer twice on clay and couldn't even get to a deciding set
but that's straying from the point already,
the point is Adrian thinks Coria, without the mental breakdown, could dominate the French Open along with Nadal for 10 years (2004 - 2014) because he was supposedly "that much better than everyone else"... and that is just not true
@@lotus630 Yes, but the match was in Hamburg which is the fastest clay and more similar to HC. That's why Federer won there in 2002 when he wasn't very good on clay yet, and he got his first win against Nadal there as well. I think at RG or Montecarlo Coria would have beaten Federer in 2003/2004. Obviously, he wouldn't have "dominated" with Nadal though, Nadal was the only one that could dominate there, but if Coria had gotten the title in 2003 or 2004 I think he could have done great the following years. And if he had closed the match against Nadal in Roma he would have done much better at RG that year. Another issue is Coria got an unfair doping suspension when he was 19, if not he would have risen far earlier in his career (he was 19 and top 20 or so) and he would have had more oppurtinities to win it before Nadal showed up.

Grande Mago!!!!

el mago guillermo coria!!!!!!!!!!!!
5:48 👏🏻👏🏻
Oh yes... Thanks Tennis TV, great work.
Another one from the enciclopedia of "what ifs". Amazing talent, there isn't any like him no more, and he's the best returner according to some stats.
He should have won several Roland Garros and had a great rivalry against Nadal. His mental instability, injuries and that final of 2004 tore him apart.
Such a pity... Federer's generation was one of the best, had incredible talents wasted.
Federer, Safin and Nalbandian should have been the first Big 3 before the arrival of Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.
@@masters.1000 yeah
Nalbandian, coria, farrero, ferror, agasi, sampras, federar, roddik, safin !! Childhood memories!! when tennis was another level..
Still don't understand how he lost that Roland Garros final in 2004 vs Gaudio, also 2003 semifinal vs Verkerk. Vanished too soon
@NNN Falta de motivación - depresión, más bien.
I was psychologically wrong
Until now i never thought about the Coria vs Safin rivalry. They split matches in 2004. Done!
This is much better tennis than we have now
The only player who could have given nadal problems on clay
Plenty of players have given Nadal problems on clay. There is no way Coria could have done it over a long period and so it proved.
anoop venkatesh Djokovic? Come on..
@@kucingmeowcanteq7994 federer
Please... Coria gave him problem exactly once. After that one he turned into push over. Djokovic was the only one who could really do it consistently. That is why he beat Rafa 7 times on clay, while Coria beat him once.
7:00 rare sight, Roddick without a cap
I'd argue that Coria is the one who invented modern baseline tennis which was later taken close to perfection by the Nadal, Djokovic and Murray. The way Coria worked through his highly skilled opponents, was simply next level. Unfortunately his career didn't reach the level per his potential.
The best
Que crak el magoooo
最高!
Que pedazo de jugador. Una lástima q se haya retirado así. Tenía más tenis que del potro.
He was doped
2:31 nadal´s face like wtf
This guy is a puncher it’s incredible !!
Man he took the ball so early
El Gato !!! What a player !
El gato? Ese era Gaudio... Coria es el mago
0:50 Coria going Ferrer mode
The run is ferreresque, but the half volley backhand to close the rally, the ease on that shot, is something special that Ferrer (I don’t want to diminish his value, but still) didn’t have
Anyway, the grunt is totally Ferrer 😂
Hmmmm
A lot of talent I see
Who is the player whose name is shortened to CAL in the clips from the Hamburg Masters? I feel like it should be very obvious but I’m just drawing a blank. Help me out!
It's Agustín Calleri. Fun fact: the Hamburg Masters in 2003 had an all-Argentinian semi-final line-up: Gaudio v Coria, Nalbandian v Calleri
Tennis TV thank you! I knew every other player on sight, but CAL didn’t ring a bell, didn’t recognize groundstrokes or serve, etc.
El mago
Was never the same after RG 2004
"Was never the same after RG 2004". Plays probably the greatest ever clay court match in 2005. Dumbass, it was his serving yips and injuries that really screwed him over post 06.
How on earth did he not win Roland-Garros in 2004?
@@The_Great_One You nut, you know what champions mentality is? If he had won RG, his confidence would have grown. And yips are more mental than anything. In the mentioned Rome final he choked. Double break up and game point for 4-0 in the 5th.
Before writing crap, understand the sport and the mental part of it first. How many tournaments did he win after 2004? Only one. Kids these days, they know nothing but want to be part of everything.
@@Masterdoctorgenius14 lol, coming at me with speculations and hypothetical scenarios lmao. "Hurr durr, what if, what if, hurr durr". Idiot, I deal with facts. He played even better in part of 05 before injuries became the main problem.
@@The_Great_One And never trust a person who likes his own comments. What a moron.
1. David 2. Juan Martin 3. Gulliermo 4. Gaston 5. Diego
How about a video of Gaudio? High talent, low mind
Berdych, Roddick, Soderling, Ferrer, Feliciano Lopez, Schuettler, Kiefer, Stepanek next
4:00 - very out this ball
I wish to hear from him in what really happened to his mind in the Roland Garros Final 2004 . He had personal issues as well I know that but who doesn't . He should have worked more hard and upgrade his level after losing to Nadal. He had a pretty decent height and should have worked on his serve as well even before the service yips he had. Sometimes Counter Puncher cannot last against offensive baseliners and that coria had to change. I can't name one Counter Puncher who was a great player other than Hewitt who couldn't won anything big after 2003 Indian Wells Master Series. People who didn't won grand slam are better than guys like him e.g Fernando Gonzalez, David Nalbandian, Jo Wilfred Tsonga .
We all thought Gilles Simon would bring something back to France after a long time but then again Counter Punchers like him were same players like Guillermo Canas who can upset world no.1 once or twice but are not good in the long run.
Plase Do "Gaston Gaudio, the best of the cat"
He was an amazing player but I think a lot of people here in Argentina overrate him a bit
Dont think he is overrated. He was a massive talent on clay but like most of the argentinian players he lacked mental strength like Nalbandian for example.
@@Masterdoctorgenius14 well for nalbandian he wanted to create his own foundation
I agree.
Federer é curva fora da linha. Ele foi muito melhor que todos. Ali deve ser tudo: físico com dom. Aí ninguém segura.
Coria can rest a bit easier at night knowing his choke in a gs final was nowhere near the level of Federer’s.
Not sure about that. He also had two match points on his serve. Not to mention he blew 2:0 lead.
He was great, but I’ll still take Nalbandian.
Coria seria o rei do saibro.
