How to learn hard basslines (5 must know tips)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- I remember when I first discovered the bass playing of Anthony Jackson. His playing with Michel Camillo was my favourite at the time and I was desperately trying to nail the bass part on a track called ‘From Within’.
It was going pretty well until the band unison section just before Anthony’s KILLER solo. I just couldn’t force my fingers into playing the right notes and it was really frustrating. I’d learned the whole song up to then, but that part was above my pay grade!
In this video I’m going to show you how to methodically master even the most difficult parts of a song. That way, when you play the ‘hard stuff’, it won’t seem hard at all.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

What’s kinda funny is there’s really nothing unheard of here, but these concepts are genuinely so important and I think a lotta people just don’t wanna hear it because it’s not some hack, lol. Solid tips that can take you far 👍
Love it SBL Team ❤👍
Thank you for making learning Bass even more fun than it already is 😎
Great and clear information Scott. Love "The Players Path". Fantastic SBL team.

As always. Guy is more HYPE than anything. Download videos....edit...and then you'll have 3 minutes of useful information when you cut out the fluff.
@@km1842 he offers about 7:30 of solid information in a free video that also includes advertising for his paid service (which is how he pays the bills), and you complain? Personally, I've Iived most of these tips and can attest to their usefulness. Is there part of it that you disagree with? Or are you just unhappy that something being given away for free isn't exactly to your liking?
@@kevgamble well said, I get so tired of people complaining about free content. If you don’t like it, do your own free channel and make it better.
As the great Prince once said "Joy in repetition"... great down-to-the-nitty-gritty tips again Scott and I LOVE that Ken Smith bass! The wood, the tone - stunning!!!
Completely agree with all these tips. Found them out by myself, too, and glad to get confirmation by some really brilliant self accomplished bass player like this one! Thank you so much for sharing!
Geez Scott, you have made some excellent lessons but this is the best yet. Very much appreciated. Love it. ('67 Fender Jazz :-) )
Signed up for the year plan. This is just what I need to get back into playing after a very long break! I keep buying basses and not picking them up and playing. Why? Lacking a structured approach to relearning what I have lost. Thank you for the nudge. I definitely needed it!
Excellent advice Scott thanks great video
Absolutely love this lesson! Greetings from Singapore!
Nowhere near the skill level to play this piece but it serves as a great reminder that the approach is exactly the same for us beginners tackling a new track (I’m so thankful that tabs exist!). Thanks Scott😎
One of my students asked me : "How did you manage to play that fast version of What Is Hip effortlessly in your video ?!? It looks easy ! " My answer : "If l want to play a piece comfortably at 120bpm, l work it until l can get it down at least at 125 bpm..."
Great lesson, well presented and clear to follow. Top marks from me Scott.
Inspires me to play bass myself. I will get good like you one day!!!
I hope the best for ya! Good luck sir
Played the guitar for over 20 years. Started bass seriously 3 months ago. Never had as much fun In my whole life and I didn’t touch a guitar ever since
i be rooting for you
Hey you’re not even bad
Melisa Munoz haha thanks im tryin my best
Love the way you play. Watch you all. The time my brother keep up the good work be safe out there you and your family💪💪💪👍👍😊✌
This lesson has been a life saver for me as I was struggling with some new tunes I'm trying to play. Might go back to the Motown Jameson book and blow the dust off
Great advice! Thank you Scott.
Amazing, Scott, thanks!!!
Excellent tips for learning difficult parts!
Good stuff as always. All my best to you Scott
Very useful!🤘Tank you so much😃
Great tips scott
I do all of this stuff because I've been playing in a pit orchestra for the last 5 years playing musicals.....Les Mis....Wicked.....Chitty Chitty...etc....
SO much music....so many key changes...so many tempo changes...so many position changes.......preperation, preperation, preperation
Thanks for this, amazingly useful
Scott, I love what you are doing,I would take a course but My Schedule is all over The Place. I would and I do recommend My Students to get hooked up with you're Programs. Keep up The Great work you re doing !
Honestly this came just in time I'm learning Emergency by Day6 and damn that basslines challenges me so much.
My best tip is:
REPETITION LEGITMIZES
Repetition legitimises Repetition legitimises Repetition legitimises Repetition legitimises Repetition legitimises
Lepetition Regitimizes
Though one of the things it can legitimize is others' opinions that you're just faking it.
I remember when I was learning soul to squeeze from the chili peppers its was a butt kicker for me when I was a teen I took my time and one bar at a time
Que bueno que estés creciendo en este mundo de UA-cam me pareces una persona genial y tus vídeos son de mucha ayuda para mi entrenamiento del bajoo
Great vid Scott, what was that first song? In the beginning? Sounded like Allan holdsworth meets tribal tech ( two of my favourites )
I could be wrong, but to my ear it sounded like "extraction" by Victor wooten, Greg Howe, and Dennis Chambers
Scott, the best. 👍
thanks scott :)
Scott tip #4 is use the best fingering but then you use multiple fingering patterns on the 3/4 part throughout this video ;)
I do all of these things and as a result I have mastered songs like Down On The Corner by CCR and Love Me Do by The Beatles.
Btw I'm going to draw the outlines of a fractal diffuser on a piece of multiplex, the whole thing will exist out of pinewood except the top and bottom. will be a lot of work but I think it's going to look really cool. It's supposed to go behind my speakers
great video
PLEASE DO A 'bass players you need to know' of MICK KARN
Self taught with a unique and individual take on bass and what to do with it musically without any theory knowledge just "feel" and experimentation. Not really Scott's bag.
Get a fretless bass and maybe a multi fx if you haven't already, listen a lot and have fun!
Help! What kind of gloves do you use and where can I find a pair? I know why you use them and I need them for a different reason, but I desperately need gloves I can wear while I play that won't affect my sound quality much.
Thx Scott, great as always.
How do you manage through the freaking last 10%. That's my biggest problem and I don't know how to solve it.
Mr Scott can you eplain us bass line from song on fire by michel camilo thx
I transcribed and trying to play the original versión of Gino Vannelli's 'Brother To Brother', but the problem is the third little bass solo. How in the world was Jimmy Haslip able to play that at 135 bpm? The fastest I get is 110 😭
Hi Scott, I'm a beginner and want to learn Bass. What do I need to learn first?
Where do I find this Groove Trainer Metronome on Scotts Site?
Wow i wish i had that bass.
Last Orders by The Aristocrats is deceptively difficult. One of the hardest songs Bryan Beller ever had to learn.
Dream Theater has some pretty damn hard songs, too.
For about a week I've been trying to learn a crazy bass fill from a DragonForce song (I know), that goes along all five of my strings over two measures, 16th notes at 180BPM.
I can do it reasonably at 90% speed after two days of consistent half-hour practice at just playing that section over and over.
When I first started, I struggled at 50% speed, but after rearranging the tab (it was tabbed by a guitarist) and repeating it, I got it up to 90%
Knowing how to read sheet music (whether it's bass clef or otherwise) before learning bass, makes learning how to play 1000x easier lol Also, previous guitar experience helps with knowing your strings and the other similarities
Besides slowing the tempo with a metronome, is there a way to actually slow the music down without changing the pitch. I really have trouble hearing some bass parts.
click on the gear under the youtube video and there should be a speed button. It slows it down to 75% 50% 25%
If you're looking for a challenge try playing It's a Deadman's Party by Oingo Boingo it's not like anything I've ever played.
I am curious which editing and motion graphic software you're using. And I'm wondering if you do it yourself or have someone else do it for you. Because I'm seeing more and more editing skills on every other video you upload.
Where can one find the sheet for this ?
The tuners tho
I would say his son feels the same way about Dad's tuners as he does about Dad's need to have to play with gloves
yooo where did you get the frog that goes on your tuner
Hoso Boyo
Scott , I gotta ask what's with the gloves ?
medical issue, if you are really interested you can go dig through his super old vids where he talks about it
I've heard some things I just play it and do my things, you know
🔥
Whats the name of the song for Pete's sake?!
Bummer. I play by ear. Gotta use my ears to learn this stuff 🧐.
Hello from sao paulo.
2:59 your welcome
What song is that
I have to learn victor wooten's you can't hold no groove by next month
Guess ill die then.
OK ok ok... I'll go back and do this with Jethro Tull's 'Bouree'... bugger bugger bugger I was hoping I could just leave that in the 'I hope he doesn't mention that one again' box but now I feel the shame... maybe I do need 'Player's Path'... 35 years in, pride can get to a chap...
Boa noite amigo, gostaria muito de ter as suas aulas, gosto muito da sua didática, mas no mínimo teriam que ser legendadas, porque sou brasileiro. Se tivesse como estaria muito grato. Forte abraço.
Use guitar pros Speed trainer and konnakol for counting
God I wish bands these days still used notation or even tabs.
Slapp like
please, what is (+) ?
+ = 'and' when you divide the count of the notes. you count quarter notes as 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4... when you count eight notes its 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and ... this is what he used the + sign, to denote the 'and', 16th notes are 1 e and a 2 e and a 3 e and a ... thats the 'e' he denoted during the lesson
6:05 I would always treat that 2nd measure 4E note as the kick-in to the 3rd measure rather than working on it within the 2nd measure.
next time, use the famous monty python fishslap clip
Notes on charts should always be written with a pencil, not a pen.
My 2 cents.
Cheers, happy practicing and stay safe.
4:29 Wait, that isn’t the slap bass course I thought I signed for...
#3 take a breather. Sleep on it
🍀👍🍀👍🍀👍🍀👍🍀👍🍀
You stole Adam Neely’s “BASS” tag line???? Seriously????
Seem like you are really committing to upping the production on the videos, but hopefully the lesson itself won't shift to the backburner in the process.
3rd first
American life Primus hardest damn song ever tried to learn never did get it
Try it real slow to get the coordination to make both hands work together. That bass line is all about that. Also, it's a lot easier to nail it when you start the strumming part with an upstroke (slap - upstroke - downstroke and so on).
I slowed this video down which helped but you then sound half cut 😆
Translate indonesia please

First
You weren't and nobody cares anyway
That doesn't look that hard. I guess my eyes are deceiving me though
1st
This was useless for people who don't read and most Bass players do not read music. You should change the title.
Sorry, but this cheesy editing and these cheesy effects makes this look so.................. ahem cheesy...
