@@MOC.mp4 funk was derived from Jazz...late 60s James Brown and Sly stone were at the forefront and in the 70s Miles Davis started Fusion Jazz incorporating different genres of music into jazz including Rock and Blues but considering the heavy sampling of Jazz and funk they were definitely foundation of hip-hop

You cant mention "All Night Long"/"Rising To The Top" being sampled by so many artists and leave out the best one: "Smooth Operator" by the great Big Daddy Kane. This is the first place I heard that bassline and it was that groove that made me want to make music. That bassline made me think "hey,I wanna do that. " It planted the seed. Just listening to music wasnt going to cut it. I didnt immediately get a bass. I was a kid. I had to buy my bass and amp on my own but managed to do so my freshman year in highschool. Even then I couldnt practice much as my father worked long, late hours and slept during the day.. It would be a few years before I could really put time into it and I was truly humbled when I realised I might not be famous or on tour as quickly as I though🤣

Just watched your keys take on this video format and, as a sound engineer, I have to confess...
I've done this same deep cut "show-off" when tuning a PA by ear using reference tracks. I've probably even bumped Anderson .Paak (don't forget the dot!). I usually keep a more standard reference track or three in my pocket, but also sprinkle in favorites of the day... Hiatus Kaiyote, Gary Clark Jr. (Sonny Boy Slim album is phenomenal), Eyrkah Badu, and plenty more. Usually referencing specific elements (clean vox, clean-ish bass, slow or up-tempo, etc.)... but mostly just showing off deep-ish cuts. lol

I loved this video, thank you!
But I have to say I like to do the exact opposite of this, especially when playing with someone for the first time. I like to take my bass, plug the cable, and then I start to sound reeeally amateurish, almost like a beginner, just to see them make a face. Wrong notes, odd timing etc. Sometimes even out of tune.
And then, when everybody starts playing all together, then I'll let everybody know, just by the way I play, that I was joking.
Of course, you have to be prepared and you must have studied the show's setlist. You can only do that If you have a minimum level of confidence and security.
Don't know If I'm right or wrong, but it sure is fun to see some expressions of relief, hahaha.
This was an excellent video, Brandon. And it certainly has some nice musical tips from some artists I haven't heard about yet.
Only now I came across your channel, and I will surely be coming back.
    Cheers from Porto Alegre, Brazil.

If I played slap bass in the soundcheck of most of my gigs, I'd definitely turn some heads. I'd probably get a few angry looks from my bandmates as well! 😂 Killing playing and lines. I love the Verdine and TC/Mac Miller lines in particular!

Of all the UA-cam dudes this guy is the one I’d most wanna hang out with. We probably wouldn’t talk about music. We’d talk about 90s cop shows like NYPD Blue and Michael Mann’s one season fail Robbery Homicide Division and also taco joints.
