    About to do this repair on my 3rd gen 2500, went ahead and got the red head gear box, first time replacing the OEM box after 247k miles she finally gave out boys! Going to use this vid as guidance. Thanks!

    Those fittings on the top of the box are 18mm. The pitman arm nut is a 1-5/16". It is easier to remove the wheel well liner and remove all the fittings from the top first so you don't kink the hard line while letting it hang like that.

    • @Coxie1996

      One fitting is 18mm, the other is a 21mm right? Mine were on my 06 Atleast

    I used to teach aircraft mechanics. Your video as opposed to others was slow enough for the novice and informative enough for the more knoledgeable. Over all very well done. You showed patience with the process. Only suggestion is, and I understand from your description someone else had been there before on the hydraulic lines and did not use the proper tools which rounded off the nuts on the tubes, is that you suggest that one uses the proper hydraulic fitting tools so as not to round off the nuts.
    Well done!!!!!!!

    Btw I have a masters in engineering in aeronautics. I rarely give a compliment and you did very well. I would trust you with my vehicle.

    Doing mine again currently for the 3rd time. I keep 1 of the 3 bolts holding the box to the frame in then get the lines removed up top, steering shaft, then loosen the last bolt and everything is unhooked and you can remove the box. A lot easier IMO. Great video!

    Recently did this on my '96... after heating/beating/penetrating oil, slotted the pitman arm with a grinder to get it off... moving to "step 3" sooner would have saved time! Thanks for the video!

    Time to upgrade the drag link and tie rod on that truck, the 08.5 steering linkage is much beefier and gets rid of death wobble... Good how to video :)

      Didn't get rid of my wobble. Nothing did until I did it all. The linkage, ball joints, shocks, gear box, steering shaft, pump and lines (the pump was toast to) I've dealt with that damn wobble for six years. Finally got fed up with chasing the problem. The problem isn't one thing, it's combination of parts. If one is worn, then it wears the new parts faster and that's why the wobble kept coming back.

    • @glzarmy
      @glzarmy 2 роки тому

      @@maddawgnoll yup, most ppl naively think its one thing but its not, i was one of them. But all parts have to be very well worn in so they all can get in harmony and oscillate. Deathwobble gets annoying, having to avoid certain parts of the street or "better slow down just to XX mph"

    • @Coxie1996
      @Coxie1996 2 роки тому +1

    So the arm attached to the steering gear box doesn't need to be flush just tight as humanly possible. Also disconnected the steering shaft before turning the wheel back and fourth to bleed the lines. Unless you have a lift like these gents

  • @ZiggyWolf.4.0

    I wonder what causes continuous bubbling in the reservoir...? Changed the pump along with the pulley when it started leaking, but it did bubble from the start and then the other day I had no power steering. Never sloppy, no noises, never stiff, just turned on tractor manual steering one day. Steering gearbox says my mechanic now. What next...? Scrap it I guess. 🙄

      @@edzgarage does the top of that arm you bolted on the sector shaft fit flush with the bottom of the sector box? Or is there space between the two where part of the spline is visible?
      I just had a shop put a box on my dodge and noticed a gap exposed and could see the spindle or spline whatever it’s called.

    Smashing job :-D, Zack made it look easy, that pitman arm and control rods look heavy duty, the weak spot i assume is the box, and perhaps the universal joint to the steering shaft/wheel.
    It should have very little slop in the wheel now :-)
    I hope there was at least one swear word off camera, it's just not a "propper repair" without one :-D.

      Steering is crisp and tight. Those reman parts don't last tho, that's why they have "lifetime" warranty. They know us really well at the parts store :-) If there's even a hint of play it goes back for another one.
