    When I was in elementary school, my brother and I were the only non-whites in the entire school. I remember one of my friends would make her eyes go small, but I never really got offended by that. I just laughed at her, telling her she looked ridiculous doing that. Another time, when I was in fourth grade, a boy in my class asked me why my face was flat. He had asked if it was because I ran into a wall or something. I can't remember what my exact response was, but I think I said something along the lines of, "Yes. I was running and someone forgot to hold the door open for me. So I ended up running into the door and now my face is flat like a pancake..."
    And it's weird, because years later, in high school, I was talking to one of my classmates while walking down the hallway and as soon as the bell rang, one of the classroom doors swung open and slammed right into me. The boy that opened it felt so horrible, but me and my classmate were just laughing our heads off.
    Another time, when I was out of high school, I haven't ridden a bike for so many years. My mom tried to have me ride her bike, which was way too high for me. I couldn't touch the ground. And when I tried taking her advice on what to do, the bike tipped over and I face planted on cement. My entire face got messed up and some skin had peeled off and I was bleeding everywhere. My mom was freaking out and I kept trying to reassure her I was just fine. She was like, "No you're not!"

    When I was in school, I sat next to a Chinese girl in one of my classes. We became good friends but it was a bit awkward first meeting her. She asked me what I was. I assumed she meant where I’m from. I said I’m a white American and she didn’t believe me. She said what else are you? You can’t be all white. You are darker. You don’t have blonde hair and blue eyes. I have dark brown hair and brown eyes by the way. I explained to her that being white means lots of things and we don’t all have fair skin and blonde features. I don’t think she was trying to be mean or anything. She was just a bit misinformed. Perhaps a lesson learned here is we all need to listen to each other a bit better to avoid stereotypes and misunderstandings.

    • @anima1-1

      @@Groggle7141 Exactly. The term "Asian" in America has very specific connotations -- that is, "East Asia" + its endemic sphere. Essentially all things which would be extraordinarily removed from West or South Asians. This is not that hard to grasp. Ninety-percent of people who use the word in this way are not at all ignorant of the fact that a great many *other* nations and cultures fall into the _literal_ category of "Asian." +Emily ugh omg so true--for some reason white people think it's fine to ask "why are all you asians so tiny and small?"--Combining the racist stereotype and question format, that would translate exactly to "Why are all you Americans so fat and large?" But of course, we don't say that because they would find it offensive and it isn't true. But to make them understand, I think every asian should start saying that back to them whenever they're asked a stereotypical question.

      I am Burmese too! Most peeps that I know at school have no idea what Burma is, unless I tell them. Only my friends (none are asain), another Burmese student, and this dude that is not Burmese (is asain though) knows that I am Burmese! I am just sitting there, asking myself if other students even know other countries in asain besides China, Japan, North Korea, or South Korea. When someone tries to guess what I am, they are never right. The most used guess is Chinese. But, I guess they are kind of right, because my great grandfather is Chinese. Welp, thanks for reading this essay of a reply. Have a good year! I probably won't see your comment ever again. Bye bye!

    • @daerdevvyl4314
      @daerdevvyl4314 7 років тому +13

      Why make them guess? Why not just say, "I'm Burmese." When they look confused, or ask, say, "Burma is in Asia, so I'm Asian." (Probably better to avoid the whole Burma/Myanmar name thing for now.) If they're STILL confused, say, "Look! You know how Germany and Italy are countries in Europe? Well, there are a bunch of different countries in Asia. Burma is one of them. So, just like someone from Germany is both German and European, I'm Burmese and Asian." Well, you probably don't want to go through all that with every person, but it would probably be better than expecting to glance at you and instantly know that you're Burmese when they've probably never met a Burmese person before.

    • @sushijinnie2071
      @sushijinnie2071 7 років тому +4

      They do know and understand that I'm Asian. When they ask me what I am, they stop me and say that they want to try to guess. And, they have met a Burmese person before because there is another Burmese student in my class that talks to people more than I do, most of the time guys try to guess, but, almost everyone, okay, everyone in my class don't really like geography and are too lazy to remember things. It's just, the people can know that I am Asian and that's all they need to know. Sorry if I sound rude, in the reply, I was trying to answer your question about why make them guess. Also the class part, I'm in 5th grade so we didn't learn much about Asia yet, we are learning about the American Revolution and those kind of things.

    I came here just to read the butthurt comments. I grew up in a mostly chinese/korean neighborhood and I used to hear this shit alll the time with my friends. And of course white people are going to dismiss it and act like it's non offensive or even annoying and they're just 'curious', but you have no idea how many times people get asked that question. The "where are you REALLY from" thing is very very popular and it can actually be pretty touchy depending on who you ask. I knew a fair amount of people who's families escaped from certain countries and the last thing they wanted to discuss was their country. I think it's really hard to understand this when you aren't an asian person who's culture is constantly fetishized by other people. I also saw my asian female friends get hit on by white guys who were looking for submissive girlfriends and I always thought that was hilarious because my friends (especially the ABC ones) were literally the opposite of that.
    Kinda sad/interesting how i keep seeing asian people commenting on here telling people how offensive some things can be and white people rebut with their experience in Japan or Korea. Um, being an foreigner in an asian country (especially when asian countires tend to be a lot less diverse) is not the same as being BORN in America and being an American citizen and only knowing what it's like to live in American and still get asked things like "where are you REALLY from".

    • @charisliu8620
      @charisliu8620 7 років тому +1

      1. Gets annoyed when white people stereotype.
      2. Stereotypes white people as evil racists.
      3. Claim: "I just came here to read the butthurt comments from white people."

    • @Andarovin
      @Andarovin 7 років тому +3

      "Oh no! Here come the white people trying to defend themselves, their families and their culture again! Don't they know that the unelected, neo-marxist cabal of ditsy, self-righteous pseudo-intellectuals has already shown them their place!? Are they aware that when a person of color has an opinion it's automatically right? I don't care that you know more about white America, having lived in it and come up through it, because the 'personal experience' trump card only works when we do it! All aboard the grievance train! CHOO-CHOO"
      The simple fact is that if a similar video was created by white people about the perceived weakness of asians, arabs or even (especially) American black people: A) other groups outside of the whites would agree with some of it (many immigrants groups, even Africans, are not fond of black Americans) B) the creator of the video would lose their video, possibly their channel, and possibly even more C) you would call it racist
      That white people, despite rightfully calling your videos and videos like this a steaming pile of hot garbage, can endure and function in a society where they're openly and uniquely attacked unlike anyone else, is a testament to self-confidence and fortitude of white people, unlike you :)

    About 15 years ago in south London England I was attending a college course in Woolwich. About 40% of the class were Chinese descent and 40% were white English descent, including myself. We spent the whole course throwing racial stereotype banter and jokes towards each other, and most of it was very non pc. It was all in good spirits and everyone was laughing to the point of tears most days. It's great memories.
    Then the world got all serious and thin skinned. Can't imagine that happening amongst students today without someone complaining or getting aggressive. Humour and banter are great for bonding.

      White people are literally the only ones you can make this style of video about with minimal repercussions. Were there a similar video about Asian people, the company who created the video would be in hot water and the video and possibly the channel would get pulled. As it stands a white-owned company (buzzfeed) created an anti-white video on white-owned youtube. White people are easily the most self-critical of all races. That would speak to the exact opposite of sensitivity. Please think before speaking.

    • @Shrapnel82
      @Shrapnel82 5 місяців тому

      You're Asian, but born in California? That's like saying you're European, but never have been to Europe. Other ethnic groups might want to stop being so sensitive. If there were a video mocking yellow people, like this one mocks white people, it would be a firestorm of controversay.

      I am white, and I take offense to that comment. Im fine with the video because I know that its meant to be funny. But whats not okay is saying anyone deserves racism (no matter what race) Thats like a five year old saying "Oh he called me stupid last week, so now I can call him stupid." Its not karma, its continuing the cycle of racism. Im not proud of what some white people say or do to other races but the fact is that not ALL white people are racist, just like not ALL asian people are good at math and not ALL black people are good at basketball/football. Now white people are afraid of being called racist, because of their families or ancestors and honestly Im sick of it.

    • @Crisis7
      @Crisis7 10 років тому +8

      TheAmazingEvie Your people have benefited as a whole by the accumulation of wealth and power at the expense of the people that your ancestors have exploited for many years.
      You're naive to think that you expect people to simply just forgive and accept that they have been screwed up and are naturally at a bad start.
      Perhaps the same should be done to your people. Let us see if you act any better.
      What goes around comes around, there will come a time where the scales will tip to the other side.
      Your high and mighty attitude is all the more reason for us to follow through with this cycle.

    • @derekljung

      Crisis7 I am a white male.
      As such I am can say that most stereotypes white people cast on other races can also be found in the white race. I can also say that no one gave me anything for being white and I had to earn everything I have today like anyone else. I do understand that I may not have faced as much adversity due to my race, but no one has ever given me a job or a raise or anything else because I was white.
      Now more to the point I am trying to make. Today's white people are blamed for slavery that was committed by our ancestors, or it most cases people we weren't even related to.
      I can also say that every other race has owned slaves. Including Black people and Asian people. White people have also been slaves. While this generally happened in countries other than the US, it does not change the fact that guilt can be thrown on the whole human race and not just white people.
      The point being modern day white people are no more guilty for the sins of previous generations than other races are for their ancestors. Every race is just as guilty and has just as many racist people in them. It is not a strictly white issue.

    Uhm one thing though. If someone tries to attack Asians with that eye gesture, making your eyes wider with your hands won't offend them. Do the nose. So many Western people are sensitive about their noes being too big. But actually, why don't we just all study how the actual U.S history is (EVERYONE is from somewhere except for the Native Americans) and stop asking stupid questions and just respect that people all have different facial features even though some people think Asians all look the same.

    Fun fact, in a lot of asian countries, they cannot tell white people apart either, even people with different color hair. In Korea many people could not tell me apart from my brother, who is taller AND with different hair. Really, looks little like me. Made zero difference.
    In any country, if you are a minority in that country, people say this kind of stuff to you. Because they are ignorant, but that is not evil, just a fact because they have no experience with you.

      I know I hired this Filipino roofing company and they did my roof and were about 4 -5 days working and it took me 4 days to start to remember the individual faces except for one guy that was more Spanish looking. I completely forgot what the boss looked like because he only came to sign the agreement and then at the final day , I paid him. I can tell East Indians apart because they have more European features. I think the people who lived North of India spread into India and mixed and they spread west to Europe , so the same gene pool. White people lost their pigment about 8000 years ago and were dark before that and looked like East Indians.
