On the subject of agreeing on signals, in a Davis cup match on TV, Ram/Sock vs Barrientos/Cabal, Sock was on the Ad side during the Barrientos/Cabal serve, the call was I formation, serve down the T. Serve location was shaken off, twice by the server. Server wanted to serve wide to Socks backhand. Finally server gave up since the T call kept coming back. 100 mph serve, cracked back at almost 100 mph forehand from Sock for a clean winner. The net person just ducked under the return below the net and stuck up his racket. They never served to Socks forehand again in the match.

Why not just make a plan for circumstances ahead of time and stick with it? Then you won't need to give away the plan verbally leading to a lost point. You need both hands in front and hand signs in the front of the body gives the plan away.

Unless you know the outcome of EVERY point ahead of time, how could you plan ahead of time? Also the signals are done behind the back of the servers partner, before the server serves, so the opponent can’t see it AND there is time to get their hands back both on to the racket before their partner serves.

@@rafini549 Is there still time as the returning team to get your hands back on the racquet? Also, if you get on the same page before you step on court you will know what your partner will do beforehand. You'll know because you both planned out how to react and where you'll be on court in most play types. For the remainder, you'll know how the partner thinks so it's automatic mode.
