    I love how Patrick explains everything so clearly and calmly. Also using the court to draw on it is brillant, no need to have high tech to teach tennis well.
    I see so often players using a huge swing when volleying. Doing 2-3 steps after the volley is also a great tip, thanks for the video.

    Patrick great strategist. Only thing on strategy you go in covering the down line because you want your opponent to go cross court. But great video on why you shouldn't take steps after the volley if you can. How many balls did they hit into the net. I know not many players lob any more, but that's why you don't close into the net until you get a read on you opponents ball. Watch kyrgios quarterfinals US open 2022, closed in too quick to close got lobed set point.

    After approach shot if the player is behind of service line at the moment when opponent hits the ball, position always must be in the middle when it's possible and then after first volley player need to follow the trajectory of the ball, based on the principles of court geometry. • @williamc4221
    @williamc4221 2 роки тому +10

    You don't follow the ball in order to cover the down the line. The down the line pass isn't always your opponent's easier shot. You follow the ball in order to bisect (meaning position yourself exactly half way between)your opponent's possible angles of return.

    Black top player's BH volley will be a strength; pink top player's Bh volley will have more errors in high stress points and when reacting to faster balls at the body. Why it is "too big" sometimes is the reason. What happens to control of wrist flexion when nervous? Where does her wrist move immediately after contact and what does that mean is happening before contact?

    I am working on my volleys and they are not great and one thing I have been told is i have too much of a back swing on my volleys. Is this correct for someone closer to my level around UTR but maybe not for better players because I noticed that the girl in pink was taking her racket back and sort of chopping at her backhand volleys. He was saying correct. Was he focused on something else when he was saying correct or is this sort of take back okay for better players. Examples of this around 7:20-7:40... I have never had any coaching until I joined a USTA team a few weeks ago. Only been playing 2.5 years and I have a lot of bad habits due to learning the wrong things online. UA-cam as a teacher can be a double edged sword.

    How will you take two steps on a low volley ?

There really is not much generic advice, there are tons of nuances depending on the situations... this is more like a quick summary of generic volleys but it wont work for everyone... The run fast short swing on a SLOWER ball is an excellent tip

  • @alexandermayer2026
    @alexandermayer2026 2 роки тому

    This one is not just bad, it is ridiculous. Positioning at the net is one of the last things you teach. Obviously, learning the SKILL comes before the APPLICATION of the skill. Positioning is hardly a factor when you have forced your opponent into few or only one option. If you approach after getting your opponent on the dead run, the opponent pretty much has a down the line pass available or a defensive lob. This is why Rafa has become the most efficient volleyer perhaps of all time. He has mastered the dump volley with his opponent in the hinterlands. Most pros today cannot finish a dead-handed dump volley to save their lives. Only an advanced volleyer comes to the net with only moderately getting the opponent out of position, thereby leaving the opponent with all three strong, passing options. And in this scenario, there is no split step. There is only a move to the anticipated selected pass of the opponent. The only place you pretty much know the ball will not be is up the middle. And these chopping, punch volleys are typical poor technique that does not even allow for the move through impact being recommended.

    I don't agree with "approach down the line" pattern. Firstly, you are the one hitting the hard shot (down the line) and you are giving away the easier shot (cross-court) to the opponent. As a proof, you can see in the video that the girls missed many approach shots down the line. On the other hand, approaching cross court has its own advantages 1) it breaks the pattern 2) you are hitting the easier shot (cross-court) and forcing the opponent to hit the harder down-the-line shot to pass you 3) Even though the net player has a larger court to cover the down the line pass, it should be easier to hit a volley in the direction they are moving. OTOH, if you hit a cross-court short angle pass, it is a tougher volley for the approaching net player because you are hitting behind them. As an experiment for point #3 - Have a student approach an inside-out shot, and move to the net following the ball. Feed some volleys on both sides to the student. You will notice that the student will make more forehand volleys and miss more backhand volleys. So the point is, if you approach cross-court, and your opponent tries to pass you down the line, it should be an easier volley.

    • @GuardBuffalo
      @GuardBuffalo 2 роки тому +1

      The shot down the line as an approach does not have to be a tough shot. It should be when you are attacking a short ball and you do not have to kill the ball. You are closing and eliminating distance so you can hit a medium paced shot and it will feel tough for your opponent still because it is traveling a shorter distance. Hitting down the line is important is most cases because it allows you to bisect the angle at the net. Opposed to being on the baseline, you should be on the same side of the court as your opponent. It is harder to do that when hitting a cross court approach. Normally a cross court shot is the higher percentage shot but you would have to hit a really great angle on the cross court shot to make it a solid approach shot so because you are increasing the angle the percentage of the shot actually drops a good bit. And again it is more difficult to bisect the angle. This is not to say that it is never a good idea to hit cross court on an approach but if you do you have to make sure you do good damage with it. The down the line approach is a much better play. Remember you do not have to end the point on the approach or even the first volley. You certainly can sometimes but I think the approach is a set up, the first volley can be a put away or another set up depending on the situation and then you can end it on the 2nd volley.

Also the speed of feeding the balls is unrealistic for that level of players!!!! they will never get that close to play the volley !!!!sprinting doesnt allow you to make a good sideways movement in time but if you feed the balls at them they will never practice it ( advice feed 50% of your balls away from them !!!!

    These players are doing too much shoulder turn which takes away from the accuracy .this is why the modern European volleyer donor match up to Edberg or Mac, and primarily th3 reason that Alcarez was able to run down and pass the goat Novak , novak is a master on accuracy on the ground strokes better than anyone ever but is not so on the volleys . My suggestion is to look at Sampras, McEnroe and Edberg and even Leander , to understand how a modern volley is to be hit , accuracy on deep and angle volleys lar excellance due to upper body stability , and the slowness prior to the contact
