Hope you do well!! Tennis competition is all mental and you must learn how to win in your mind first before you play your matches. Which is hard to do for most players. Focus on relaxing and picturing yourself playing your best tennis in matches. freementaltennistips.com
Don't be scared. But do try to have fun! One tip which often helps me stay calm when I'm serving, is to imagine I'm playing against someone who is a beginner and that I'm trying to feed the serve to either their backhand or forehand. You might think this will make you hit a weaker server, but actually it just helps you relax and find the target more consistently. Most double faults occur in the mind first. So on important points, always try to RELAX!!!!
@@theforehandguy its not that easy....try it at 40-30 on your serve when you have to hold. Chances are it goes OUT. I don't swing that hard, I get it in..like medium. Under 4.5, i havent seen guys who can consistently attack a 2nd serve that stays low and sliced
@@user-be5qg7mr1s it might not be easy but I think it definitely possible even for players 4.5 and under with practice and proper technique. A fast swing with good technique and spin can actually help with consistency whether it’s slice or topspin

I’m playing. In. State right no. I won my. First to matches, and I’m now in the Round of 16. If that’s true, I’m the worst in the tournament, because my 2nd serve makes me want to throw up 🤮
Hit with spin to make the ball go in! Work on your return of serve and realize what the score is on every point. Your shot choice should be based on who is ahead or behind. Have a practice partner stand at the service line and hit serves instead of the base line. This will decrease your time to react but simulate a big serve. Then have them move back half way then eventually back to the base line. This is a drill we use at team practice and tennis camp. If you can get most serves back and attack second serves you can get into your opponents head as the match goes on. I am only 5’6” and 140 lbs so I don’t hit aces with my spin serves but win lots of points with my return of serve. Always try to move forward into the return if possible. Make them think twice if they are serving to you at Add Out. Being consistent is the key!
Thanks, everyone. This was all very helpful for finding the best mental space on the court. I must say, though, the comic relief in the fourth segment was the highlight for me--hilarious, and possibly the most important part of the lesson!
tip no4 made me smile as i was wondering just two days ago whether i should get a handle on my self criticising when i make a mistake and it was answered (and beautifully demonstrated by Ian) right here. Thanks! I will try and curb that behaviour
I tried out these tips today to the fullest extent that I could! Although I didn't win the "match," (it was just a couple of sets against someone on my team during a practice) I did a whole lot better against her than I did last time. With a combination of these tricks, some mental toughness work, and a ton of practice, I've risen to an entirely different level than I was last season. My coach even said it was the best tennis he had seen from me this pre-season!
I loved soccer way more than tennis now i like tennis more as i played in a holiday camp and then i got into a zone like a match and thats why i am looking at the tips
A lot of the serve thing is in the toss. And your first slightly in front of you. The second serve toss should be a little bit behind the ball. So your forced to brush the ball more and get more serve. Also if you don't do the pronation and continental. You need to use those.
Ian, this is one of favorite videos you and your team have presented. I am going to share with all my students. Great Info here and put together in a humorous setting! Kepp up the good work Sir. Blessings, Brother!
These are some of the best tips I've ever heard. But I have a question, when you are on offense ready to either hit an overhead or easy put away shot, do you recommend ever glancing at your opponent to see where he/she is moving? I play up against a lot of defensive players who make every return, hard to put away a shot when they seem to guess where I'm going every time. I always feel like they are watching me..
You should definitely NOT be taking your narrow, focused vision off the ball, Kevin. You can watch them, but use your peripheral vision. Takes a lot of discipline and focus! I talk about that in this video: ua-cam.com/video/eW_iHszB1Ck/v-deo.html
I don't know, sometimes letting out some steam will cool you down. I mean McEnroe, he won a match or two. I recently introduced calmly dropping my racket when I made a really bad miss, and it made me feel better, haha.
Hmm, I guess still keeping your mood in control is necessary though, I'm thinking McEnroe probably was more in control of his tantrums than it seemed...

For me, the biggest benefit of hitting crosscourt is the safety factor of the extra 4/5 feet that you get going diagonally. I am quite a flat hitter so that extra distance can be a real bonus for me! :)
Appreciate your thoughts Gavla and Foxtrot! In reality, however, I just can't agree with your logic. Tennis is a game of managing errors, ESPECIALLY at the amateur level. Think about it this way: lets say the net already drops 2 inches by the singles sideline, which means a change of 4 inches compared to the center strap. Four inches doesn't sound like much, but consider it in terms of percentage. Going down the line has cost you 11% of your margin. If you know much about the pro game then you're probably aware that just a 1% difference in points won makes a massive difference in results.....ask a pro if 11% improvement in any kind of safety is desirable and of course the answer is "yes". Should we not care about it, simply because the number of inches sounds small? As a coach, I think its important to make students aware of every possible pattern advantage they can exploit. Of course, height over the net is only one factor out of many. As you pointed out, change of direction is critical to be aware of.....as is inside ball vs outside ball, strengths and weaknesses of self and opponent, hitting angles vs hitting "straight", and lots of other elements as well. Our singles strategy program (Singles Domination) has over 150 videos diving deep into patterns of play. Picking a single element and saying it isn't "relevant in reality" is foolish imo. -Ian
You need to think a tennis shot as a range of possible outcomes, an observation drawn from a probability distribution, rather than it's own specific entity. Therefore, even if you're aiming 1-3 feet over the net, having the extra space over the low part of the net still increases the probability that your shot will be successful. Ex: You aim 12 inches over the high part of the net. You miss by 14 inches. If you're hitting down the line, you hit the tape. If you're hitting cross court, the ball goes in, and you could win the point.
