This was my first King Novel. Not a horror book fan but this book peaked my interest, and I’m glad I picked it up. Maybe it’s just because I’ve never read a king book before but I love this book! The story wraps up quick but leaves you wanting more(IMO) so it was bittersweet to say the least. I wish the adventures in empis wouldn’t end.
I loved Fairy Tale. Felt like The Talisman meets that classic movie, "The Little Monsters". Of course this was about 600pgs but it didn't feel like a 600pg book (unlike Tommyknockers which was about 550pgs and felt like 900). I breezed thru it. Total page turner. And I know a lot of folks seem to think SK has fallen off in the 2000's, but I honestly think most of his 21st Century shit has been fire.
I loved the first 200 pages of the book with the excitement of wondering what is beyond the shed. Wasn’t too excited about what happened after that. It was good but with dark tower expectations it’s a little deflating but that’s my own fault. Loved Charlie’s relationship with his father and seeing them navigate throughout their grief. Also a huge dog fan so gotta love Radar To answer your question the ending seemed a little predictable and wrapped up quickly like you said but I did enjoy the happy ending nature of it since King doesn’t give many of those. Thanks for the upload! Currently reading the bill Hodges trilogy for the first time getting ready for Holly. On finders keepers right now
I liked the ending. My issue with the book was the 200-page tangent in the middle that felt like tonally belonged in a different story than what King had established at the beginning. My expectations were likely too high, but I was more disappointed than any other emotion I think.
Loved this book, I had a German Sheperd growing up, and watched him grow old and eventually go to the clearing at the end of the path, so a lot of the Radar stuff hit home quite a lot, and was a big reason why I enjoyed this book too.
I’m totally with you. I needed more of the same energy that Jake and Oy brought to the Dark Tower epic but I was completely fulfilled with now Radar and Charlie bonded.
Hey mate! Thanks so much for the review. I love your channel. It’s thanks to you that I knew which order to read and review The Extended Dark Tower series. Love your stuff.
I bought the Audible version after watching your review. I’m very pleased so far. It is my first King book but I am familiar with much of his work in a passing sort of way. Lots of memorable lines and turns of phrase. I was really tickled by Charlie’s references to Cujo, having watched it as a kid. It is an intriguing thing to see King use his own famous creation (Cujo) as a now famous and somewhat primordial fear of his teenage character Charlie. King’s work is legendary even within his own stories. Fantastic stuff so far.
Looking at the book after finishing it about 2 weeks ago, I can say that I appreciate the type of story that was written. It felt like a fairy tale retelling while offering a new story. Trying to keep it as spoiler free as possible, some of the parts where the two main characters were separated did drag on, but it helped build a more emotional attachment to the "32" chosen ones. I appreciate all the subtle and not so subtle nods to previous fairy tales, lore and fantasy which makes me feel as though I will notice more nods to other works in a reread. Thank you for your input on the novel! I enjoyed watching this one.
Hey! Thanks for your video reviewing ‘Fairy Tale’ I actually listened to the first 12 hours of the audiobook a few months ago then stopped listening to it because I mostly lost interest once the story had progressed to the ‘Fairy Tale’ component of the story. However, I did really enjoy the story up until that point and have found myself thinking about the book on and off, so I think I’ll end up returning to it and will listen to it again in its entirety.
Hi! Great video. I like how you describe it. I just finished this book and I was so excited for it but sadly I am disappointed. My favorite part was the beginning, the set up, the character development- all fantastic! I did find myself bored towards the end. 😅
Fixing to dive in, Jimmy. Thanks for the review! I almost went the audiobook route bc King reads it with another narrator. I think that would be cool. I may end up doing both.
I'm reading it now. He's at the fountain just outside Hana's house. I actually loved the part with Charlie and Mr. Bowditch and I felt a little letdown when he made it to the new world. However, I quickly recovered and am really enjoying it. It's sort of a mix of fairy tales, The Wizard of Oz, and Ray Bradbury. Although I'm not at the end yet, maybe it ends quickly because fairy tales do. You know, the old "happily ever after" thing. At least, I'm hoping it's a happily ever after thing.
I prefer to listen to Stephen King's books because of his tendency to be a bit long-winded. It actually works really well when you have someone narrating it. I liked the ending because, as he put it, this is the story he wanted to read during the pandemic and I think we all wanted a happily ever after. So I was good with it.
I just finished this book and, like many people, I'm torn. I'd give it a 5/5 for the first half and a 3/5 for the second. I still recommend it as Stephen King is a master storyteller. A couple of the characters were hard to get out of my mind, ha ha. What King book is similar to "Fairy Tale" but even better?
My favorite part of the novel is the first 200 pgs. The friendship between Reade and Bowditch was created beautifully; I connected with Reade’s motive to help Bowditch BUT Reade’s motive to help Radar did not connect with me because I never loved a dog so much to put my life in danger. Whoever loves their pet to that level will relate to the protagonist and I think will enjoy this book. Moreover, the mystery of the shed was much more interesting than the actual shed. Lastly, this book is a retelling of The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe; Fairy Tale has a ton of elements from Narnia.
Most people get more angry when they see a dog mistreated than other humans. I guess growing up with a dog creates a unique bond that no human can live up to.
Just picked this one up. About to hop into it. Finally in the mood to read again. I've been writing too much and haven't had much time to sit down, relax, and read
I generally enjoyed the novel. The first 1/3 is significantly better than the rest. It starts slow with a great setup and sort of drags along the rest of the way until the quick ending. It's somewhere between a 3.5-4/5 at best. The protagonist is heavily protected with plot armour throughout the novel like the guy from Slumdog Millionaire where he has the knowledge and ability to navigate every scenario thrown his way. Charlie also doesn't think, talk, or behave ANYTHING like somebody under the age of 25 in the modern world.
I personally loved this book, although I do agree that the ending was wrapped up a little fast. The whole story from beginning to the fair one and escaping Maleen, I absolutely loved! I also really enjoy the “longwindedness” because that gives me a deeper relationship with the characters! Awesome book all in all 😁👍🏻
I loved this book, but I agree that the ending was concluded in a quick way and that it was a slow burn. I heard somewhere that there is a new SK book coming out (doesn’t seem to have a release date yet) titled “Holly”, and as a big fan of the Mr. Mercedes trilogy and The Outsider novel, I’m looking forward to reentering a world with Holly Gibney again. Love your channel!
I’m close to the ending of the book myself. I loved the fleshing out of Charlie and Mr. Bowditch’s relationship, especially Charlie falling in love with Radar. I enjoyed part of the middle when he meets everybody, especially the “Sharlie” part. I did get a little bored during part of it though, especially the parts where Charlie is captured but I continued on knowing King would pick up pace again. Thanks for your review.
Didn’t overly enjoy this, the final 80-100 pages was a long slog. Twas Mr Harrigan’s Phone meets The Talisman meets The Institute, all of which were much better😎👍🏻
Thanks for the review Jimmy! I am around 75% through it and starting to struggling a bit with the pacing (despite being a slowwww burn). Nevertheless, I need to know how it ends! In other news, you NEED to read The Woods are Dark by Richard Laymon.......such a crazy ride!!
Hey Jimmy! 3 months ago you recommended me under your then latest video to read Salem’s Lot, and I’m here now to tell ya that I absolutely loved it! I gave it a 5/5 stars, I got chills when I got to the part where Matt allows Mike to stay in his house only for it to be the worst idea ever, and I absolutely loved the cast of characters! Couldn’t tell ya which one was my favorite. (Sadly I did get spoiled on one character’s death because of me searching their age and their wiki page saying “status: Deceased” 💀 Is it true that there’s some sort of sequel to that novel in the Dark Tower series? Or is it some kind of reference to Salems lot and not quite a sequel? Do you recommend that I read the Dark Tower even if I’m hesitant to start a series of novels, or should I stick to the one book horror novels from King?
Great to hear! There’s is a major character from Salems Lot that plays a role in the Tower series. At this point I’d suggest sticking to novels before going down that road. Try and read a few of his older books…maybe Pet Semetary?
When I first learned of this book, I thought it was going to be a sequel to Eyes of the Dragon about Thomas and Dennis hunting Flagg. Even though that is not the case, I will still be reading this one eventually. It has a pretty cool cover, if nothing else.
In a way the plot line feels very much like Mr. Harrigan's Phone at the very beginning. Someone dies and leaves someone else something and it has a power to it. But Mr. Harrigan's Phone is more like a phone death Note, which King is admitted to writing before Death Note even existed. I feel like the former that I mentioned was lacking in a very short story so it couldn't go the full route, but this book definitely has that energy in it. So far I have been enjoying it but I would not say it is for me cuz I am used to more of a darker King then the ones he's been putting out. There's no competing with Stephen King but there is definitely some of his weaker ones. And the weaker ones I just don't often care for.
this book was probably a 3.5/5 book for me. loved the beginning, his relationship with mr bowditch, and just seeing him live his life for those first few hundred pages. the middle portion of the book when he was just roaming around fantasy land looking for the sundial was meh, definitely was expecting much much more! but then the ending i absolutely loved the ending so intense and so good! Also, audio book is so good! narrator does accents and voices so well, there was also a part when mr bowditch leaves charlie a tape recorder--its the best thing ive ever heard on audio. they make it sound like ita an actual tape recorder i just found that detail so neat. that part is also voiced by stephen king himself.
No spoilers for those who haven't read this book yet, but I have to say that, as a disabled person, I found it more and more problematic as the story went on. As many have said already, it is of course well-written, and I was pulled along by his characters as usual, but as a lifelong King fan it hurt to take in some of the themes of this story. Again, I can't go into detail without spoiling things, so I'll leave it there. I hope the next one turns out better.
I liked the first section of the book more than the other world section. It wasn't a letdown by any means. I just really got invested in the story of a boy and his dog. As for new stuff, there is an untitled Holly Gibney Novel and a Cujo related Novella forthcoming. We're also due for another short story collection.
Read it and finished it. Charlie is not much like most teenagers nowadays, particularly those in his age range- no social media, watching decades old movies. It was ok. The ending was kind of meh in some respects, but believable in others. I don't see myself reading it again anytime soon. 3.5/5
I loved, loved, loved this book. The only thing that would have made it better was references to the Tower. Im surprised it wasn't even implied that this was a level of the Tower with an extension or emblem of the Tower like Talisman.
I was hooked on this book from page one. I just had a hard time putting it down. The story was laid out very well. I only wish the brother of the princess would have had a better ending. Maybe healing and becoming the brother again at the sight of his sister. Can't write more without telling the story. But, the brother's phyical being was a let down for me. He still could have been what he was, but put back to his orgional phyical body at the moment his sister was in front of him.
I didn't care for it. I thought it was one of the least enjoyable of his recent novels. Having said that, I don't think it's poorly written; it just didn't ring my bell. The characters are vintage King: some everyday good folks mixed in with some bona fide monsters. Has he been reading Grimm's tales to his grandkids?
The next book is most likely 'Holly' featuring Holly Gibney....the one after that, a novella, may be 'Rattlesnakes' a companion story/sequel to 'Cujo'. As to 'Fairy Tale'...I'd give it an 8/10: it's a solid, engaging Tale that loses points by just not being original enough; all the allusions to other fairy tales felt more forced than organic...it often felt more like a highlights than an actual, deep story. But it was enjoyable in a surfacy sort of way. For me...the first half was far better than the second...just a humble o, tho

This book kinda sucked. The beginning was like Mr Danninger's phone but dragged out forever. It took 200 pages to get to the fantasy. Also too much social commentary. Idk, just wasn't for me. 2/5
This was my first King Novel. Not a horror book fan but this book peaked my interest, and I’m glad I picked it up. Maybe it’s just because I’ve never read a king book before but I love this book! I am bit of suspicious about how ending this novel ist but after I watch this video everything is change.

Duuuuuuude do you live up north?? Your accent makes it sound like you do. 😂😂
I do! 🇨🇦
@@jimmymango Same!! Fargo accents for life!! 😂😂
This book kinda sucked. The beginning was like Mr Danninger's phone but dragged out forever. It took 200 pages to get to the fantasy. Also too much social commentary. Idk, just wasn't for me. 2/5
I enjoy your reviews but maybe you should write down some notes before filming a video but then maybe you shouldnt. im just saying.
It just wasn't that good of a book
Thumbs down overall.
Boring, tedious, repetitive, unsatisfying book. It was difficult to get through and unsatisfying when finished. Two thumbs down.
Could anybody please take a review to a deeper level? It’s a political allegory.
Try the institute, it’s a fantastic read
