- On 6 September 2022, Stephen King released a new novel - Fairy Tale - and, of course, I picked it up and got stuck right in! In this video, I invite to join in my journey through getting hold of the book, a few nights spent reading it, and my spoiler-free review - take my hand and let's see what we find along the way.

If the booktube community ever collapses you can always transition your channel to a vlog/asmr channel 😁 Excellent review as always!
Thank you! I enjoyed doing this for sure…perhaps when I finish all his books I can start again at Carrie and do asmr reviews 😂
I enjoyed enjoying the book. I took my time with it, because I was really visualizing the world.
Nice - I definitely had that early on, but it did lose its shine for me
Your baby sleeping on you is such relatable content coming from another parent 🤣
Lol, glad to share it! Reading a 600-page hardback with a baby strapped to you is no joke, is it??
As someone who is the complete opposite kind of constant reader (I love fantasy and view King as my favorite fantasy author with many of his works being "Dark Fantasy") I really loved this book. It had interesting literary allusions and fantastic character work which will always be some of my favorite aspects of King. The way King riffs on old school fairy tale tropes and the hero's journey style adventure was great for me.
I'm really glad that it did work for a fantasy fan - as I've mention in my review, that is not me so I'm not really surprised I wasn't that into it. But good to know it landed for some, thanks!
@@DaveReadsKing See this is what I love about the King fandom. Everyone knows that there are people here for different things. I'm much less into horror than a lot of King readers and one of the reasons I love your channel is it's very fun to see someone else love King from a totally different perspective. Cheers mate! (I hope I did that right. I'm not British lol)
@@TheBlidget absolutely! And thanks for the British sign off 😂😂
Great Vid! Loving the Vlog style video. I also have young kids(14 months and a 4 yr old) that take away a lot of my reading time, but I try to squeeze it in where I can(usually when the kids are sleeping). This video reminded me of myself lol. Keep it up Dave, you're killing it man. You deserve a ton of subs and I think you will get there eventually!
Thank you so much, really appreciate that! Enjoy reading (when you can!) 👍👍
I read a Garfield comic strip, where they were saying you ever noticed that pets sometimes look like their owners. Y'all have the same haircut.
😂😂😂😂
I felt King was enjoying writing in this world way more than I enjoyed reading in it. Completely agree with your comments and I found this reassuring. I really sad I didn't like it, especially after it took me about a week to read 😭
Yeah, it's a shame that it was a miss, but I'll take one bad book every 7-8 years at this stage in his career
I’m listening to this audiobook and it was so good so far! I didn’t realize that King narrates pieces of the book which makes it 10x better!
Oh nice!
I liked this longer vlog format for a review.
As not a huge fantasy guy myself, I have to agree with a lot of what you said. It feels like, as soon as we enter the other world, the story losses a lot of it momentum.
Also, I saw Bodies Bodies Bodies, I didn't much care for that either.
Thanks man. Re Bodies etc, the more I think about it, the more I really like what it was trying to do…it just wasn’t done very well at all
Nice vlog! You should do more vlogs.
Thanks! I had fun doing it, for sure
Really enjoyed the VLOG format! Yeah, the book is just okay for me. I was expecting something more. See you on the Discord!
Thanks! And yes, totally agree - catch you over there!
Really enjoyed the review! Just got my UK version in the mail today. Have had doubts about the book but still gonna give it a go myself. Also have to appreciate that ETID a shirt 😍 🤘🏻 Keep up the great work following you on IG too.
Thanks so much - hope you get more from it than I did. And yeah, ETID, god I miss them!
So pleased you used the phrase "pinch of salt" as opposed to "grain of salt", which drives me bats. Even King uses "grain of salt" in this book.
Anyway, completely agree... loved the opening scenes in Illinois, but as soon as the fantasy stuff hit like a ton of bricks my enthusiasm and speed of reading started to dwindle.
Slowly approaching the end of the book now, but not particularly expecting a miraculous turnaround.
Thanks as always for sharing your thoughts 🤩👍
I really struggle with "I could care less" when really the logical phrase is "I couldn't care less" and don't even get me started on "Legos", it's a brand, it's a thing, a collective, Lego.
Thanks! But do, of course, take my opinions with…well, you know what 😉
I’m with you on I could care less - great song by Devildriver though!
"Grain of salt" is the American version of the idiom, so of course King would use that one. "Pinch" is more common in the UK and Australia. Both versions are correct.
@@Trademarc1977 well, there you go - every day is a school day!
WOW! It's an amazing review. Magnificent. Thanks for your video❤
You’re welcome
Wow you should do more vlogs dave 🙂
Thank you!
@@DaveReadsKing just finished reading fairytale surprisingly I liked it I really love the dog radar yes the book was slow but still good 😊🐶
I'm a fantasy fan and I'm 100% with you 1st half 8.5 out of 10
2nd half 5 out of 10
The fetch quest style was frustrating would have been more fun if he was wondering more maybe avoided the prison part as that dragged balls
I hear you!
I liked this I kinda new it would be a fairytale but with adult humour in there. A little love letter to brothers Grimm. Wizard of Oz. And Lovecraft.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your videos make my day!!
Thanks! Comments like this make mine!
Another great video my friend. Just got my copy and about to start!
Awesome - hope you enjoy it!
Great review. Just received my copy. Next on my list. Can’t wait to get to it.
Nice, hope you enjoy it!
Just here to say that you’re dog is really cute! Not as I pictured Radar, but pretty close hahaha! Anyways, your baby is also pretty cute!
Love the vid, and agree with your opinions about the book. Keep it up!
Ha, appreciate that! The dog and the baby both say thanks!
You are a master, Dave!
Thank you very much!
Fun video! Thanks! I just read Fairy Tale and really liked all of it. I also now own the UK version! (I’m in the US)
Nice 👍
I love this style of video. Very soft spoken and casual I hope eventually you venture into other genres!
Thanks, appreciate that!
Covert work filming a true pro!!! Wow this book must be handled with gentle hands as it magically makes babies appear 🤣🤣🤣🤣 my god King is turning into Koontz in his old age. Your dog has very expressive eyes lol. Loved this unboxing and review and the format of this video 👍👍 your face after reading it said it all lol. I'm not a fantasy fan shame he didn't go down the Horror fantasy route like how Clive Barker and James Herbert did quite well when they dabbled in fantasy.
Thanks - and yeah, watch out for those magic babies 😂😂
You get ASMR points for this one!
(Whispering) thank you!
I have the US edition but I LOVE that spine!!😍😍😍😍😑
Nice, isn’t it? 😊
I was ready for a disagreement on this but...no. I started out loving this book, my dog is suffering the same fate as Rades, so I connected with this bit of the story so much. I felt all the dog stuff was so well written (appreciate only dog lovers will really get that). But then we went down the stairs and it hurts to say this as my love of King is immense, but....I'm so bored!!! I've actually done what I have only ever done on Sleeping Beauties...I've taken a week off it. Back reading this morning, but I fear I'm in for a struggle. Spot on review Dave.
Thanks - I agree, the dog stuff was great, but she’s not in it anywhere near enough!
Cute dog 😀🐶🐕
He is cute…shame he’s also a dickhead!
@@DaveReadsKing I also have a dickhead dog too his name is rocky
@@angelaholmes8888 ha! Cool name!
At about 17:56 you say you read about 60 pages a minute. Please tell me that was supposed to be 60 pages an hour...if not you are a speed reading demon.
Oh and my brother's name is Floyd and I feel about him pretty much how you feel about your Floyd lol.
Definitely 60 an hour 😂 a page per minute was what I should have said. And yes…Floyd sucks 😂😂
@@DaveReadsKing an your able to remember what you read, i dont remember anything when i read fast ,whatmethods do you use to remember then
I honestly don’t know - I’m just lucky that my brain seems to be wired that way 🤷🏻♂️
I don't think it's the most disappointing book I've ever read but it's up there. I loved the first third but dear god the last half was the definition of "Tell, Don't Show."
Absolutely!
Just finished it today. I enjoyed it but I agree there were so many fantasy names and characters it was hard to keep track of at times.
Fair enough!
Just finished two days ago. Such a great story and sad at times.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It reminds me of Joyland in that a boy is about to graduate high school etc. Growing up.
I can see that in the first quarter for sure
If UA-cam ever becomes subscription only, your 19 reasons series is the reason I’ll start paying
Wow, thanks!
While I'm not an avid fantasy reader, I do overall enjoy the genre. From that perspective (and from one whose first King read was this book), I wish to say the latter two thirds of the story fell flat for me as well and felt more like The Pilgrim's Progress than fantasy. I still overall enjoyed it, but wish more would've been done with the idea of stories spilling into our world. If that had at least been added to the otherwise lackluster ending, it would have been a far better story.
Yeah, I can see that!
Funny you said Spidey Sense. As it’s mentioned in the book.
That’s ka
Just finished and…same! 100%. I did like Talisman, BH, and Dragon, but yes I expected much more fairy tale and Dark Tower connection as well. Appreciate your candor as always. Btw the UK cover is much better than the US one lol
👌👌👌
Definitely good idea to do more vlogs.
Thanks, I had fun doing it!
So is it a good Autumn read?
Yep, definitely - the main part of the story starts in October, and as it’s quite a slow read it’s a good one for those cozy evenings in
Wow that book is gorgeous! I have my U.S. edition and I love it don't get me wrong, but your UK editions are always a little bit prettier!! Enjoyed your video! ✌️📘
Thank you!
Great video 😊 I'm about half way and I'm struggling now ... really don't want to dnf a king book 😱
It's worth getting to the end for - I've seen a few people come back round to it over the last quarter
I finished this today and am not quite sure where it lands for me. It was very YA wasn't it? I don't read much fantasy but earlier this year I read Red Leopard, Black Wolf by Marlon James and holy heck that was a messed up book (in a good way), so coming off that fantasy world to this one I just couldn't shake the feeling that this story was missing some bite. And not much happened in 600 pages did it? Having said that, I felt it had some strong moments and imagery, and it ended well (always a worry as you get to the final 100 pages or so of a King epic).
Definitely missing some bite - absolutely needed to be nastier
I wish I would have gotten the version you recieved! Way better than the US cover !
Yeah, for once the U.K. cover turned out pretty well!
Hey Dave, have you read the Dark Tower comics?
I just came across them on YT, a comic a day is the name and he has 28 stories. I think that's the whole set. Anyways I haven't checked them out, but I plan on listening to them September 18th. That's my birthday present to myself.
Keep Safe and Thank You for your show!
Charles
I’ve never read the comics, no - they’re next on my list of things to hunt down
@@DaveReadsKing good luck! I tried to keep up with them as they came out but it was tough! Comic book store didn't have them all and I got quickly behind. Saw a compiled book of them about a year ago for like 120$ but seemed silly cause they ain't even finished the story.
@@chesterbrooks3606 yeah, the prices are somewhat off-putting!
Ur my favorite ❤
Thanks!
Is Floyd a Bedlington Terrier?
No, he is an idiot...sorry, a cocker-spaniel/poodle cross
How do you read this book in a day? It took me forever.
Oh it took me best part of a week - I think the clips in this vlog span Tuesday through to the following Monday…Fairy Tale was a SLOG! 😂
@@DaveReadsKing SLOG is a great word for it. I felt that way with Tommyknockers as well. And the longest "short book" of all time..From a Buick 8.
I agree with you on a lot of T’knocks for sure, although it does have some fine moments tucked in there. From a Buick 8…yeah, totally see that, although I got loads more out of it on reread
I just powered through the audio book because I can multitask but I get distracted sometimes when someone talks to me lol! 😂 I was shocked to hear Charlie mention he lost his virginity!?! Was this a joke? I somehow missed this? To whom? When? Help if you can I’d rather not have to read it again haha! Great video! Thank you from Canada! 🇨🇦
He gets a - by all accounts - sensational mercy fuck from Eris before he comes back to our world. Totally unnecessary and totally King 😂
@@DaveReadsKing Thanks! How did I miss that?! I think I zoned out when he started to describe her new mouth lol
Tractor-repelling Moustache gets a 👍
Ha! Thanks - I think it’s more the fact that we’ve moved house and are no longer on a tractor route, but I’ll definitely let my mo take the credit 😂
I think you just don't like fantasy as much. I've taken people different types of movie genres where, regardless of how good it is, they do not like the movie. Most people love the LOTR movies, some people can't stand the names, number of characters, different races, or the questing aspect. I liked the book.
I openly admit in the video that I don’t like fantasy much, but I also think that - objectively - the fantasy parts here are not very well written. I struggled to picture the world and all of its lore and legend seemed crammed into the final few pages. Whereas I found all the stuff before Empis to be wonderfully written, full of heart and totally captivating. Glad you enjoyed it though. As I say in the video - this one’s not for me!
11:28 why do you hate your dog so much? 🤣
Because he’s a twat!
@@DaveReadsKing Why? Let me guess... he barks a lot? Same with my dog.
He doesn’t bark that much actually. He’s just a horrible dog - selfish, arrogant, never recalls for me, and likes to play power games around asking to go out and then wanting to come right back in. He’s a little prick
@@DaveReadsKing hahaha
🤷🏻♂️😂
Damn it Dave your your disappointment is a huge spoiler!!!🤣🤣 I could see it on ur face before u even said a word 🤣 now I don't wanna buy it 😡🤣
Ha! But, bear in mind I don't like fantasy! And the first quarter was excellent...it's definitely worth a read - maybe just get it from the library instead!
@@DaveReadsKing very true I will get it eventually
