But need to practice and understand the the style of cours.

You had an absolute great point about floyd mayweather and the Philly shell but something that is underrated about Floyd is that he also used the high gaurd defense he didn’t always use the Philly shell in every situation
I noticed he used all different guards to suit the situation switching between them really fast thats why he sort of rolled his hands around to keep the opponent constantly guessing.

That sht he said at the end of the video was 100% correct and I’ve completely agree with him. I’ve never not once seen or heard a boxing coach say that but it’s always how I felt about it. I always felt when someone is learning for the first time always start out with the textbook traditional basics first. After that you’ll be so much more fluid and sooner or later you can try other styles out to see what works for you if you want without picking up very bad habits that you will have to unlearn if you were to start off with them. Look at it this way. All basketball players learn textbook basic basketball fundamentals before there personality ends up being their full game. People like Allen Iverson didn’t start out like the way he was, he started out with the basic fundamentals first.
The way I go about it is I just mix all of my favorite fighters style practices, studying, and then when I’m fighting you got good results but I did learn from Tony’s technique break down
Same, I think imma practice switching stances from orthodox to southpaw and back because it kind comes naturally and it’s good to confuse the opponent with different techniques

Excellent as ever: full of information, clearly explained, fun to watch. Thank you very much for spending all the time and effort putting all these great videos together!
As always, very nice video! You're one of the few boxing/combat sports channels I am subscribed to. Personally I switch between stances depending on the situation at hand. but of course one should start and stick to the basics, and from there onwards experiment to see what works for each person.
Peek a boo style: for short and resilient people Hands down style: for people with a goofy personality but has good reaction time Philly shell: same as hands down style
I think it all depends on who you're facing in a particular fight. Let's say I'm fighting Tony: my stance then would we leaning forward with my back facing Tony, while I run away.
My stance has evolved. My coach started me out with basic high guard. Over the years its now become a mix of high guard, long guard, boxing off the back foot switch hitting with a touch of hands down only when I know he's slower than me or can't reach me. Basically, as you said, you sorta find your own groove that works for you... My guard is still evolving too
Edit: I 100% agree with Tony. The type of stance you use depends on your fighting style. All beginners should use the traditional stance as recommended at the end of the vid. Its the OG for a reason. I use a combination of a high guard and a long guard for my Boxing stance, that's because I predominantly fight on the outside. The long guard helps me to gauge if I am in striking range, I can fire off quick jabs and I can feint. The high guard is used if my opponent closes the gap, if I get backed into a corner, my hands are already there to block and parry incoming punches or I can get into a clinch.
Being boxing for 4 years now and last year i discovered the soviet style boxing and i love it. It work well when you are tall. I definitely use it against shorter opponent but if the guy is taller than me i go back to normal style.
Pick a boo stance is really good if you have the explosive power punch, and likes to be the aggressor, philly shell and shoulder roll is good for counter punchers and defensive style of boxing
amazing video, my takeaway is that only the people who've mastered the basics can begin to find unique ways to easily solve harder problems. I think this applies to most professions really. Anyone can do skilled work, but a pro will show you their own efficient way of skipping steps/ being lazy. As laziness is clever efficiency.
Your right no 1 stance is better. U have to adapt depending on the opponent & situation. Eg. if your fighting a dude that might gas early, u can start with a more mobile or defensive stance.
It’s also worth noting that if you are doing anything other than boxing then you won’t have the big gloves to protect you, which could change how you look at your stance.
I prefer the long guard it feels more natural for me and my size and have some good results and in between i do switch to the traditional style and still working on it and developing
I feel a lot more comfortable in a philly shell rather than a traditional boxing stance. A traditional boxing stance feels very unnatural for me. Im also somewhat ambidextrous, for the most part I’m right handed but I feel better in a southpaw stance. Do you think i should just get used to a traditional orthodox stance , or build on what I feel most comfortable in? I’ve got great reactions and depth perception already, I’ve also got an above average reach for my height if that makes any difference. Would love to hear some opinions 🥊
Floyd didn't always box in the Philly shell. You can see him switch to a high guard in some fights. So it makes sense to develop various stances so you can switch depending on the situation.
From what you say, I think you sound blessed and should try and master as many as possible. To be able to fight southpaw as a righty is great. With a long reach, maybe try out a long guard? I love peekaboo, especially once you're in the pocket, it can be devastating. But I'm a shorty! All the best mate 👍
When a fighter is close i use the traditional fighting style and when i have space I’m in a Philly shell it’s funny bc i recognized the Phillys weakness but I’m good at it so i added the traditional style and it’s gotten my defense better
the basic stance is also pretty flexible. you can square it up to infight and brawl(mid-range fight, can also boxer-punch aswell) then sideways the stance to outbox and counterpunch then the normal one who can fit into anything, you just need tactics and big brain to back up the lack of pros it has.
Lol coming from karate and kickboxing it was hard to get the boxing stance just right but when i understood the boxing stance and movement i leveled up tremendously in all combat sports i practiced. Boxing and wrestling should be know by any martial artist. The understanding of positioning is unlike any other. And lets be honest hands are king and only conpliment everything else
The best guard of the boxer is the one that best suits each style, however the guard that Salvador Sanchez or Julio Cesar Chávez used are one of the best guards for any boxer, since they allow you to put pressure and attack. defend the most vital parts of the body as this is very important, especially if you are new.
Note: i do kick boxing so this effects my stance alot. But i like to put my left hand at my cheek and my right out. So my right jabs them and i can combo them. And if they do attack I always have my left hand there to wait for my right to retract. So the kicks help with keeping them at distance and counters part of cambos etc. so yea thats my take. (Dont take it to serious my pfp is a roblox character lol) regardless i do go to a kickboxing gym and it works well for me so have fun thats my take
My opinion is, everyone has to start with text book and once you get the textbook you can then proceed to try others or maybe you keep textbook it just depends on what feels right like buying trainers/sneakers
Hi, started boxing at a local club aged 44 and love your content. One annoying issue is ny shoulder area getting tight fairly quickly so keeping my left guard up becomes difficult. Do you have any videos around shoulder/joint mobility videos? Thanks very much.
So a thing to note about the phelly shell is that floyds is more defensive than the og version. But id argue the og version also requires a higher level of swapping between 'aggression and defensive stance'.
Im a new guy ofc! But i make the comment to you because from how you describe the fight with the guy it sounded like he only learned the first version by floyd?
There is conflicting information about how wide a boxing stance should be, depending on who you ask. Initially my stance was wide (I felt like I could dart in and out better like that), but I got converted by a coach (a hall of famer pro) to stand with my legs shoulder width apart in the traditional stance. After some time in the shoulder width I felt my hands were faster, but I still felt like I could not move as quickly. In this video Tony's traditional stance is wider than shoulder width which is what originally felt more natural to me. I feel like the more narrow stance was more popular back in the 70s.
hey tony i commented a while back mate like 2 years ago or something between that range great too see you have 2.25m subscribers mate just wanted to say hi and you are doing great
i understand your point with the philly shell, but once you master it like floyd did, it’s a really good stance. Once you combine shoulder rolling with footwork and timing, it’s really hard to fight against, that’s why floyd is 50-0
With the peekaboo style, we don't need to move backwards when you can change angles. That way you keep pressure on your opponent and you are not in the same place for too long. Changing angles like that requires lots of practice though.
Personally, I prefer the "Old Guard," which George Foreman utilized in his first career. Hasim Rahman also used the "Old Guard" as well. Both Foreman and Rahman were able to use their jabs very effectively from that stance. Sometimes, I'll use the "Philly Shell," which Ezzard Charles and Tim Witherspoon used very effectively.
I agree with everyone stertong with the basic vanilla traditional boxing stance, i have minor boxing experience, I feel like the traditional style is for me and ima be unique and work it to a level that it seems like its sum speical style when reallt its the basics evolved, thats what i feel like id be
Pretty much pick the style that plays into your physical attributes best. The philly shell style I think is one of most difficult to master don’t see too many guys using that style the right way.
Greetings from the money team in Las Vegas it seems like the American and Russian styles in the stances are dominating and lately the Russian style has been picking up more steam however I still say the American stance is the best for defensive counterattack the problem with the Russian stance is you have rhetorical high guard
Good evening tony, GREAT VIDEO. I've had an inquiry. How do I deal with a guy who throws punches really fast, non-stop, no tactics, no finesse. something no boxer would ever do. The guy is bigger, heavier and taller than me. How do i deal with these situations?
Is this a gym sparring situation? Personally, I'd try to move a lot and counter him as much as possible and also try and get on the inside where it negates a lot of his advantages. Sounds difficult, I'd also try not to spar with him often as well! It's all good experience though, as long as he's not trying to hurt you.
@@OffGridMadMan cant really call it a gym tho, its quite a culture in here to spar bareknuckle in places like backyards, alleys, hallways. Dangerous shit m8. These punks don't have the balls to come up to the gym and fight properly.
traditional stance sets the foundation for all others whether it's orthodox or southpaw. What is your take on training in both orthodox AND southpaw to give some variety and have something to switch to in order to throw off your opponent. If i remember correctly there aren't a lot of southpaw fighters so there may not be a lot of fighters who are used to fighting against a southpaw opponent.
It largely depends on your natural abilities....what complements your talents. I always felt that Cus was in many ways a great trainer....but his style was far from universal...but it seemed like destiny was at work for him to train Tyson. Having said that...id say the styles of Joe Louis or Evander Holyfield are more universal than any of the three mentioned here.
I dont think we can criticize the stance of GOATs. I think that if it works (hit and not get hit), and it works for you (you are confortable with it), that is the best stance
I think experimenting is the best thing for that, i personally struggle with traditional boxing stance, as well as with Ali stamce, and Mayweather, Floyd's stance is hard because I happened to practice wing chun, and for me parrying the jab is way more comfortable in a stance where it's almost like a.peekaboo stance, so wing chun has its own parrying it's called pak sao, and what's easier for me, is to get away with peek a boo stance and kinda change between the stances, of peek a boo, and jeet kun do, ( floyd Mayweather, it's just really similar to Bruce Lee's jeet kun do ) amd also it depends on who k fight, if it's a bigger opponent, peek a boo, if he's smaller or just like me, I'll go with the JKD one, but I'm a big practiser in peek a boo, and consider breaking through the professional fighting league wether it's boxing or kickboxing, and mix my styles in there, and maybe later get into ufc, i believe i can out work all those lazy fighters if i dedicate myself
I prefer the long guard because I have long arms and am taller for my weight class. And it's super easy for me to see punches coming and deflect them. I used to do mainly high guard but felt like I was getting pummeled a lot with that stance because I had trouble with distance management.
I’ve only sparred once, train everyday and do bag work with traditional stance, but when I sparred I felt safer with philly shell. Not because I like FM, I actually don’t. I guess I need to sparr more to figure it out.
Been boxing for 5 months, I slip punches a lot (and not to brag or anything but I think it’s quite good 😉) but my defence is very weak. I have my hands covering me but it never really does anything when I slip, You reckon it’d be better if I didn’t have my hands right up to my guard when I’m up close like that?
The traditional stance doesn’t suit me, I always miss a lot of punches, but the pikabu is ideally able to dive under the opponent, approach with a pendulum and throw hooks, uppercuts to the body with a transfer to the head and vice versa
What is the best boxing stance? Let me know 👇👇

In this video Tony's traditional stance is wider than shoulder width which is what originally felt more natural to me. I feel like the more narrow stance was more popular back in the 70s.
hey tony i commented a while back mate like 2 years ago or something between that range great too see you have 2.25m subscribers mate just wanted to say hi and you are doing great
Please present that thumbnail to all of the people present in said thumbnail
Sir please make a video on how to block punches and head movement 🥊
i understand your point with the philly shell, but once you master it like floyd did, it’s a really good stance.
Hi, Tony!
Hi mate 👊
Tony please do a video about the new rules for mike and jake
After trying out and experimenting, the Soviet boxing style feels like the style most natural.
I personally use a mix of them all traditional phelly and when am cocktails hands-down
I agree with everyone stertong with the basic vanilla traditional boxing stance, i have minor boxing experience, I feel like the traditional style is for me and ima be unique and work it to a level that it seems like its sum speical style when reallt its the basics evolved, thats what i feel like id be
Stances are dynamic tbh. You’re never always in one position.
New to boxing--wondering i should focus on Tony? Do you do online sessions? I'm based in the UK. Thanks
my fav is high guard, like winky wright, Canelo, etc...
I think experimenting is the best thing for that, i personally struggle with traditional boxing stance, as well as with Ali stamce, and Mayweather, Floyd's stance is hard because I happened to practice wing chun, and for me parrying the jab is way more comfortable in a stance where it's almost like a.peekaboo stance, so wing chun has its own parrying it's called pak sao, and what's easier for me, is to get away with peek a boo stance and kinda change between the stances, of peek a boo, and jeet kun do, ( floyd Mayweather, it's just really similar to Bruce Lee's jeet kun do ) amd also it depends on who k fight, if it's a bigger opponent, peek a boo, if he's smaller or just like me, I'll go with the JKD one, but I'm a big practiser in peek a boo, and consider breaking through the professional fighting league wether it's boxing or kickboxing, and mix my styles in there, and maybe later get into ufc, i believe i can out work all those lazy fighters if i dedicate myself
was wild and beautiful how uncomfortable you were in the philly shell😂
They're all good styles they mastered all three of them.
It depends are we fighting with the traditional rules or are we going old school bare knuckle which has regained popularity.
Thoughts on Archie Moore's modified cross-guard?
I prefer the long guard because I have long arms and am taller for my weight class. And it's super easy for me to see punches coming and deflect them. I used to do mainly high guard but felt like I was getting pummeled a lot with that stance because I had trouble with distance management.
Same bro, a mix between a long guard and philly shell feels way more natural. I’m also taller with longer arms.
Yoooo I saw hitman
W
Man I use a stance between the second and the third, just call it a mixture stance 💀
The traditional stance doesn’t suit me, I always miss a lot of punches, but the pikabu is ideally able to dive under the opponent, approach with a pendulum and throw hooks, uppercuts to the body with a transfer to the head and vice versa
