By Sondheim's beard! You're alive!!!
HE LIVES!
I thought this channel died
I thought this video was going to start out like The Sound of Music hahaha
Irrelevant but is that a Dipper Pines hat
Haha yeahhhh
Don't get me started on the overabundance of jukebox musicals...
I need 6 hours just to recover from the fact that you actually posted 😂
YOU POSTED AGAIN I AM ALIVE!!!!!!!
hooray, he’s back! it was really great to hear your take on the “commercialization” of broadway. however, i’d like to raise you this:
i’ve seen a lot of kids (like 15 and under) talking about how spongebob and frozen were the first musicals they’d ever been to and how much they loved it. i’d like to believe that these kids are gonna start exploring other musicals because of their experiences watching these commercial adaptations. i completely agree with you that theater should be rooted in art-making over profit, but i feel like if we don’t reach out to people using the shows and mediums they know (legally blonde the musical on mtv, shr*k on netflix, etc), then they’ll never be compelled to get into original content, yknow?
that's so true! I mean there's of course always going to be those who don't stretch outside of Heathers, DEH, Be More Chill and Hamilton, but whenever I meet someone (esp younger people) who are wanting to learn more, I tell them!
Are you back? God I hope you're back.

I hope he doesn’t go on another year hiatus like he did last year
fangirlfortheages in his most recent video description, the 73 tony survival guide, he said he promises that he won't go on another year break. By looking at his Twitter, it looks he is working on a video now.
Everything I've seen from Once on this Island is fabulous and I want to see it so much!!!!! I hope it wins.
I saw it in December, and it was wonderful!
It did
Hopefully when it goes on tour it comes to my area.
Just a reminder that Applause, The Sound of Music, Passion, A Little Night Music, Little Shop of Horrors, Promises, Promises, and many other incredible and respected musicals are also adaptions. That doesn’t make them bad or unoriginal.
Patrick McLaughlin most are. But I think that it’s not fair to compare frozen on broadway to a little night music
You seriously comparing all theese classicals with Sponge Bob?
It isn't about Spongebob. It is about painting all adaptations with the same brush.
Little Shop of Horrors is my favorite musical.
I don't mind the adapted musicals. I'm trash for all musicals in general but I just wish there're more original new musicals.
Mr. Mash wakes up once every Tony season
I am the Brigadoon of UA-camrs.
I actually did Brigadoon my freshman year of high school. I was in the ensemble, so I had to wear a kilt onstage!
Do not get me started on the fact that all musicals nowadays seem to be film and tv adaptation. I love good adaptation don't get me wrong (Newsies is a great show for example) but oh my god I really hope this isn't all Broadway is going to be anymore.
katie the only time I like adaptations, is when it brings light to works of art that not many people know about, so that there is less of an expectation (ex, kinky boots, once, bands visit, and many others.) unfortunately all of best musical nominees are adaptations. I hope in the future we see more original works.
It's been like that for a long time now.
Right? And unfortunately people love it. I have two friends that think the Shrek and Spongebob musicals are "the greatest things ever". 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
Saw Waitress, didn't like it.
@Gabriel from the top of my head, The Prom, Avenue Q, In The Heights, Bright Star, Next To Normal, Dear Evan Hansen, Come From Away, Book of Mormon, The Visit, If/Then, The Drowsy Chaperone, Title of Show, Urinetown, 13, The 25th Putnam County Spelling Bee, Something Rotten!, Bandstand. There are actually quite a few, the problem is they don't get the attention they deserve.
YES
Great video! I'm intrigued by your constant glorification of the "original musical". While originality is always something to be strived for, isn't it true that most great musicals (depending on how you define that term) are based on pre-existing source material? After all, Carousel is based on Liliom, Once on this Island is based on My Love, My Love, and as you stated, My Fair Lady is almost a direct adaptation of Pygmalion. All of my favorites are based on pre-existing sourced material, and one of your recent favorites, The Great Comet, is based on a classic novel as well. I personally feel that adaptation of pre-existing source material is one of musical theatre's greatest achievements, and by demanding more "original musicals", it seems like you're discrediting the value of innovative adaptation.
Jimmy Stubbs the issue is when an adaptation is done solely for commercial reasons. Spongebob, Mean Girls, and Frozen all only exist to get people to say “oh I know that movie! Better go see it on Broadway!” While shows that are based on books or operas or sometimes even lesser known movies like Band’s Visit don’t have any commercial value. They’re not just adapting stories to fill seats, they’re doing it to tell these stories in new complicated ways that couldn’t be done through other mediums. That’s how I see it at least.
Key word: INNOVATIVE adaptation. I’m not saying that none of the nominees this year are innovative, but I’ve certainly seen a few broadway adaptations that...aren’t.
I, as a musical theatre composer myself, believe that the mere addition of songs to a pre-existing story like FROZEN or MEAN GIRLS is daring and almost always adds depth to the story. Of course, shows like FUN HOME and ONCE ON THIS ISLAND may do this with more intricacy than the aforementioned shows, but nevertheless, music (and dance and movement, of course) can blow a show wide open and create a distinctly new work independent of the original.
You do realize, I trust that FROZEN started as a movie musical, and all they did was add about five fairly mediocre songs.
I can speak on behalf of Spongebob. Besides the characters and the setting, everything else in musical is original. The story is 100% original and it’s not just some flashy cash grab. The musical has heart and I absolutely adore it.
......any chance we'll get a tony's survival guide for this year?
It's been a year. We're dying for another video, man.
I would like to see Once on This Island win. Fingers crossed!
I'd just finished catching up with the most recent podcast episode - so happy that you're back making videos! (also, I'm very on board with your salt)
I was starting to think there wouldn't even be any Tonys videos this year and that we may have lost you forever, but it's great to have you back on UA-cam. Here's hoping for more new videos that allow you to showcase everything that's great about musical theatre.
Loving the hair btw.
You came back! I am hoping for the Band's Visit for the win. The most beautiful thing I've seen in a while. And although it is based on a film, the source material is largely unknown by most people. The other three are just blockbusters.
OMG I WAS LITERALLY JUST REWATCHING ALL OF YOUR OLD VIDEOS BECAUSE I MISSED YOU AND NOW YOU’RE BACK AND I’M SO HAPPY TO HAVE MY MUSICAL ‘SNOB’ BACK ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Just curious; what are the three completely “original” shows?
Adapted from Film or Television:
• Aladdin
• Anastasia
• The Band's Visit
• A Bronx Tale
• Frozen
• Kinky Boots
• The Lion King
• Mean Girls
• School of Rock
• SpongeBob SquarePants, The Broadway Musical
• Waitress
Nebulous "Singer/Songwriter/Performer as a Musical" Category:
• Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
• Springsteen on Broadway
• Summer: The Donna Summer Musical
• Escape to Margaritaville
Revivals:
• Carousel
• Chicago
• Hello, Dolly!
• My Fair Lady
• Once On This Island
Based on Books:
• Hamilton (officially, at least)
• Wicked
• The Phantom of the Opera
Original:
• The Book of Mormon (not based on the book, surprisingly)
• Come From Away (based on true events, but not really an adaptation? Maybe?)
• Dear Evan Hansen
Musical Theatre Mash isn’t Dear Evan Hanson based on a book!
No, it's not.
It's loosely based on a person Benj Pasek and Justin Paul went to high school with.
This is the sassiness I needed in my Tony's commentary, thank you so much
IVE LITERALLY BEEN WONDERING ALL DAY IF YOUD COME BACK TO MAKE A VIDEO ON THE TONYS YAY
You know, you're right about adaptations, but I'm still gonna absolutely adore Spongebob. Cause besides Spongebob, Heathers and Addams Family, I share your opinions about adaptations. And a lot of the reasons I like those adaptations is because they're more like retellings rather than remaking.
Thank god you mentioned the podcast here, I hadn't found it before! Time for some aggressive deep dives into the back-order catalog!
So glad you’re back!
It's really good to see you back. Please make more videos again. Please.
Oh my gosh, when I saw your video pop up in my subscription box I literally did a Breakfast club inspired fist in the air! I'm so happy that your back!!
Glad to have you back!!!
I found this channel, subscribe, begin looking through all the old videos, and then you disappeared. I’m glad to see you back, and I hope you’re back for longer than one video. And my guess would be that “The Band’s Visit” will win Best Musical.
Thank you for doing this for us despite the dismal season! I’ve been loving the podcast in the meanwhile and the opening was glorious
You're back! That's the best thing of this season.
It had been months since you last updated and I thought this wonderful commentary on culture was gone.
Hence I'm 4 weeks late, but glad you still rolling with this project.
Glad you're back
Welcome back! Yay I'm so happy!
You're back! My dude you can't abandon the podcast and the channel at the same time! I thought you were dead until Jim and Tomic came out with a new episode last month.
Yas! I was worried i wouldn’t have a survival guide for this year. Thank you!
I MISS YOUR CHANNEL SO SO MUCH
It would be really cool if Disney made a non-confetti musical that wasn't based on one of their movies. Like, they developed a new story and decided "you know what? This story is best told on the stage. Let's put it there." that would be cool.
Good to see you back, Mash.
No video in 10 months, I wish this guy had another channel somewhere.... Really liked him
YOURE NOT DEAD LAOEJFJSKA I WAS SO HAPPY TO SEE THIS IN MY SUBSCRIPTION BOX
this whole video is such a mood 💗
PLEASE COME BACK
Who sings in broadway under a tree?
Spongebob Squarepants!
Who sings and to see him it won't come for free?
Spongebob Squarepants!
If dancing and singing is all that you wish.
Then see all the humans dressed up like fish!
This year's Tony's will be the 1 year of Tommy disappearing of the face of the Earth.
I'm so glad you're back!! Hang in there, broadway will be back soon (hopefully. most likely... right?)
GAAAAAHHHH I'm so happy you're back! I found your channel about a month ago and was sad to find that you hadn't posted in a long time. I'd love to support you on patreon if you're going to continue making videos :-)
Yes!!! You're back!!!
we've missed u please stay for a little while mr mash
im glad youre back!!
I have to say I initially didn't want to see Spongebob because the idea of a stage adaptation seemed so absurd but I got bribed into seeing the show and ended up really liking it. In fact, some of the songs are still stuck in my head.
Just hoping for an entertaining night tomorrow!
You are the only other person that I've seen that actually agrees with my thoughts on the "best musicals" so thank you for keeping me sane 👐
I MISSED YOUR VIDS SO MUCH!
Juhu!!! Glad you're back! I agree with you, it has been a very sad Broadway-Season. Hope next Season is going to be more creative with more unique shows. Greetings from Germany and please release more videos again!
I agree about the nominations for best musical. I am afraid Band Visit will be the Great Comet of this year. I really believe it deserves more attention. If anything, I think Spongebob should win. Means Girls lies too heavily on the jokes like you said and Frozen, made me so annoyed mostly because the entire show was felt so rushed for let it go and the direction and choreography to me felt clumsy. As for revival, My guess for best revival will be once on this island. Which isn't a bad thing. I love this show. Although for some reason I think carousel has a possibility. There are some things i enjoyed about it like Billy and the choreography.
Omg thank you! We need new shows! And I mean *new*
HOLY WOW HOLY WOW MASH HAS RETURNED THIS IS LIKE CHRISTMAS HOLY WOW
****serious comments****
It is seriously so nice to see your face in my feed again. You were the first theater person I found on UA-cam and your videos made me feel so normal and welcomed in my theater geekery. I've missed your input here so much this season, you seem to be the only Broadway blogger that says what I'm thinking about the lack of originality on Broadway rn. Hope you're here to stay! Your opinion and art is most valued!
Much love ✌
*also, my vote is for Mean Girls to take the Best Musical win. Beats out both Spongebob and Frozen in substance, imo.
Yay you're back!!!!!!!!!
I really missed you! Thank you for being real and actually criticizing shows. I feel like most musical theatre youtuber are too nice or never really delve into their actual opinions so they come across family friendly. Its great to be positive and all but it doesn't feel real all the time.
Dude can you please make videos more, I freaking love your channel so much
Yesss I was hoping you’d post something for the Tonys
YOU’RE ALIVE AHHH!!!
This video is a mood.
Seeing you again made me so happy.
HE EMERGES!!!
Thanks for the second hand catharsis. Glad you're back.
Please come back
We all miss you
Omg I missed you so much
You've convinced me to check out Once on This Island.
I miss your videos!!!
i really love your content
Thank you for posting again! I feel the exact same way about this Broadway season. Please make a reaction video to the Tony's!
Oh wow an upload! I’m glad I stayed subscribed
Hey man we miss you please come back :)
THANK GOD YOURE BACK
So glad you're back xx and if someone is taking the mick - then you must be making an impact - stuff 'em
I have no ability to really see the new musicals, seeing as I'm broke and live in West Virginia, but I can listen to the cast recordings and watch show clips and live performances so I'm not completely in the dark.
Spongebob: I cringed at the idea and then I listened to it and ended up really liking it, probably due to the fact that it was a bunch of famous musicians whose stuff I'm a fan of. I think the costuming was extraordinarily clever and I'm so glad it's not giant rubber suits. I first listened with low expectations, but now it's something I can definitely play in the car that my passengers don't hate.
Frozen: I mean, it's Frozen.
Mean Girls: I love this movie. It's one of my favorites and I quote it constantly. I loved the references, but then it just felt like it was cheap to just put the jokes to music to try and get another laugh. It's Mean Girls with the jokes to music. Enjoyable enough, but I didn't feel like it added anything.
The Band's Visit: I still get goosebumps when I listen to Answer Me. The premise of the musical is simple, but from that simplicity comes beauty. I can't give the musical credit for the story and whatnot, but the music was absolutely gorgeous and I'm happy for everyone involved.
a video! I'm so excited!
You're alive!!!!
You’re back!!! Yay!!!!
Tommy I gasped when I saw this
Where have you been?! We’ve missed you!!
HE LIIIIIIVES!!!! Welcome back, Mr. Mash!!!!!!
Your back!
We missed you, Tommy
Musical Theatre Mash is back baby!
7 months later
Je t'aime! Looking good Mr.
Welcome back and sooo nice to see you again.
Edit: I'm not sure who will win...
Just earlier today I said: “I’d be great if Musical Theatre Mash decided to post again for the Tony’s, sort of like he did last year” AND NOW HE’S BACK
it's been 84 years,
You're back! Oh my gosh you're back! So glad to see you posting again.
I agree with you to a point. I believe that original musicals should continue to be made. But I don't want that to dominate Broadway. If I had it my way, (in that perfect little fantasy world in my head) I'd always have a huge variety of ALL different kinds of musicals. Originals, revivals, adaptations, confetti cannons and solemn tear jerkers! And access to them all! (curse my location based disadvantage and lack of funds....)
Guess you could say, I WANT IT AAALLLLLLLL!
And I think Mean Girls will win. Last year Dear Evan Hansen won, and I think Mean Girls might piggy back on that. I could wind up being surprised, but that's where I'm at right now.
And for the love of Sondheim can we get some friggen group performances this year instead of solos/duets????? Is that too much to ask?!?!
This year Tonys are the perfect reason to start drinking again
I had to do a double check just to make sure this upload was real and I wasn’t dreaming or dead
Please post more. I miss your videos
YOURE ALIVE!!!
HES BACK
I'm a film buff, and whenever I hear people complain about comic book movies getting snubbed at the Oscars in the major categories, I always have to remind them that they're not as original as films that do get nominated like Dunkirk, Get Out, The Shape Of Water etc. because comic book movies at this point have become a never-ending soap opera with almost always the same characters.
