    My brother took me to see Hadestown (it was amazing)! I am a big Patrick Page fan and however low you think his voice is, it’s LOWER. Whoever runs his mic only makes it more intense. The Walter Kerr Theatre is suffering structural damage from his voic

      I saw it back in 2017 and when Patrick Page's Hades comes to fetch Persephone and she says, "You're early" and he replies with his first line of the show: "I missed ya" in his low bass voice, the whole theatre got a bit of a chill and you could hear people murmuring "ooooh" in response. His voice is so deep and low, it's amazing and it was a great way to introduce his character. (This was during the pre-Broadway run, I don't know if his first line has changed since then because I know that the show has changed a lot - I'm a little Hadestown obsessed and I'm so glad it's been nominated for so many Tony's!)

    Cheers for the honest take on Be More Chill! I feel like people have this personal obligation to not offend the people who worked on it's Broadway version but every change that it makes is more confusing rather than fresh or interesting.

      I love the original BMC, and I saw the off-Broadway one and adored it, but part of the new Broadway version definitely feels like a fan service, which is a shame.

    • @MattVargas
      @MattVargas 5 років тому +1

      @@gwenn5875 Yeah, the "Bill and Ted" take on the Squip is such an extreme interpretation of the "You look like Keanu Reeves line" that it just seems like a desperate attempt to reinvent just because that's an element of theater. Like, if you wanted to do something like that have the Squip be John Wick but don't be different just to be different ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      idk, it seems a lot more campy than before, some people like it and some don't. I don't really have an opinion on it because I'm scared to listen to the broadway cast album (which is weird because I was practically following everything they did off broadway) apart from one song (sync up) which I don't remember anything about.

      I definitely prefer the Two River cast recording over the on-Broadway recording. I have seen neither one, but I do think that Will Connolly (sp?) played Jeremy better in the sense that he’s a bit more believable as a high schooler. Will Roland’s vocal quality is great for playing high schoolers as well, but not the type that Jeremy is. Just my opinion, don’t cannibalize me

    With Be More Chill I found that my own love for it faded between the time I discovered it and the time it got on Broadway. I started noticing little things that bugged me and the songs (other than Michael in the Bathroom, which I am completely sure will end up as a classic theatre song of this modern era) began to get annoying when I heard them come up on my playlist. I still respect the show and am glad it made it to Broadway, though I’m disappointed that it doesn’t seem to live up to what it could be. I don’t know if this has happened to others, but I think part of the reason it seems the fandom has faded is because it may have for the original, not just the Broadway version. You worship something as fresh and new, so when it becomes old there’s nothing fresh or new anymore and you might see some cracks that you initially turned a blind eye to.
    If you read all the way through, thank you. I’ve been feeling this for a while and can’t talk about it in my die hard musical friend group who don’t really ever fall out of love with any show.
    Have a good day!

    So glad to see a video from you again, I need my educated Broadway channel fix! Hope there’s more to come! I love Hadestown and I need it to avenge Great Comet for the travesty that was the 2*17 Tonys. If Rachel Chavkin doesn’t earn her rightful award I will riot. And the Oklahoma! revival looks soooo good. I definitely think this season was better than last, and I have my fingers crossed to see more interesting, unique and most importantly ORIGINAL pieces in the future.

    I 100% agree about be more chill!! I saw the broadway version and it just felt like it was trying Too Hard to be relatable to The Kids. I felt like the original just got to the point better?? Dunno I’d have killed to seen the original production in person so I could make a fair comparison but something just felt so off. As for beetlejuice I love love love that show, but I’m extremely bias because that’s been my favorite movie since I was 10 lol. I feel like Sophia Anne Caruso should be up for at least a nom since she sung her but off at only 17 but either way she’s definitely someone to keep your eye on in the future!

    Hi Mash! I looooove your videos and always look forward to new ones. (Just getting into your podcasts now, too.) Your analysis is so well thought out and articulated, I always learn something new with each video. As I get acquainted with Hadestown, I'm finding similarities (musically (minor tone jazz), thematically (devil, journey to hell), stylistically) to Allelujah; The Devil's Carnival. If you do a review on Hadestown in and of itself, I would love to hear your expert insight on a comparative analysis. (And if it already exists in a podcast, I look forward to hearing it.) Cheers!

    I scrolled that far in the description, but I don't know enough about the nominees--neither play nor musical--to make any good predictions.
    I've heard that people were surprised that To Kill A Mockingbird was not nominated for Best Play, but it picked up other nominations that I can't remember.
    I was a little disappointed but not surprised when BMC got one (1) nomination. BMC's still close to my heart; yes, even while I'm also a fan of Hadestown! But I'm proud of Joe Iconis for getting nominated. I think the Tony voters probably like the other Best Score nominees better.
    I'm so proud of Hadestown!! I will be very surprised if it wins nothing, but heck if I know what it will win.

  • @gillianmcderment8279
    @gillianmcderment8279 5 років тому

    Saw King Kong, I think there’s a reason why they’re not planning to release the album...because every single song is forgettable. By the time you get in the car/bus after the show, you won’t be able to name TWO songs. One person in my group of 20 could shockingly remember one song, and yes that song was very irrelevant to the plot. The show felt like all the budget went towards the puppet and everything else had a budget of $50. The costumes (especially ensemble) were very bland and basic. Their set was only the projections in the background, which were okay-ish cgi. The only outstanding actor was the villain, everyone else was high school level acting. Every. Character. Was. Two-Dimensional.
    Here’s the plot to help save you time from seeing the show: Girl wants to be famous. Greedy guy wants money. Girl can talk to a big gorilla. Greedy guy manipulated her into getting the gorilla for him. Girl finds out money isn’t everything. The end. That’s it. Along with a random side character who talks about his dead daughter?

    Yeah, this better not be your last video before the next Tony’s. I need your make believe world of musical theatre psycho-analysis!! To help me grow. It’s like vegetables. Theatre vegetables.

    out of curiosity, what's with this trend of revivals coming out so close to when the last one came out? Wasn't the Brian Stokes Mitchell version of KMK one out like 15 years ago? And what about The Music Man getting revived again? It kind of defeats the purpose

    Saw Be More Chill when it was still off-broadway last year and it was wonderful. It still felt very dorky and earnest and small. Not sure if that was lost in the current Broadway thing, or if it's just not quite the kind of thing that draws Tony attention anyway. I'd still gladly see it again But also, dying to see Hadestown. Been a fan of that album since it came out in 2010. If only tickets weren't $400. Or if only I didn't live in Indiana.

    I have to say Oklahoma was such a mixed bag for me. Surrounding a bunch of wonderful performances (and some eh ones) were a lot of really? Weird directorial choices? Many of which seemed to be made edgy or artsy for edgy or artsy’s sake. I saw the first preview and really hated it. But it’s also such a mixed bag that I might see it again and love it? Will say that the new orchestrations are really stellar. And the set is fun to play on (I go to school there). So wonderful to see you back!!!!!

    That's disappointing to hear about "be more chill", had such high hopes for it. Very excited though to hear that "Hades Town" is doing so well. I will have my fingers crossed for them.

    I actually missed this before the Tonys, but I just wanted to say that I discovered your content sometime after you stopped posting regularly, and after binging every video you've ever made I am just so desperate for new content. This is by far the best theater content on UA-cam, and you are a truly gifted creator. I will happily do whatever I can to support you! I just signed up for your Patreon, but I'm not sure if it's active. Anyway, I just wanted to say that you've gained a whole-hearted fan in your absence, and pretty please keep making content. Thank you for all of your hard work!

    This video does not do several musicals justice. Beetlejuice is funny, upbeat, powerful, and visually stunning. The actors are brilliant and the vocals are otherworldly. The Prom is more the just campy and random, it is very satirical but one of the most touching shows I’ve ever seen. It follows many extremely shallow people who come to terms with themselves through helping others. It is also insanely funny, cute, and has so many amazing actors that many might not have (but should definitely) heard of. Words cannot describe how much I love this show, it has fabulous representation and does not let itself fall into stereotyping gay people. Some characters have a handful of smaller stereotypes, but each character is unique and different and are characters many people have not had to relate to in the past. Kiss Me Kate May be very close to its original writing, but when you look deeper, you see a powerful woman decide she would rather go further in her career instead of be a quiet, simple wife. She stands up for herself and her opinions. The vocals are unmatchable (plus it even has Corbin Bleu), the dancing is some of the best in broadway in recent years, and there are some very funny moments slipped into the classic old musical.

    I’m so excited for the Tonys this year! I’m hoping for the prom to win! And if Ally Stroker doesn’t win best featured actress I’ll riot! I think it’ll be a great show! James Corden was great last time I’m sure he’ll be even better this year!

    I’m here late, but one thing I’d like to say about The Prom is that the summary in the video, in my opinion, is coming at the show from the wrong direction.
    Four down and out musical theatre actors, in an attempt to bolster their fame, attempt to crusade into a small Indiana town takes the “local yokels by storm” and help a lesbian teen go to her prom, which was cancelled once school the school board heard word she was intending to take her girlfriend to the dance.
    This is a wholly selfish act, at least at first. The struggles of Emma and her girlfriend are a key conceit of the musical, yes, but this framing, from the outside in, is how the musical is portrayed, and is how I believe the show should be interpreted. The character development of the Broadway actors and the teens’ fight for acceptance in their town work surprisingly well together in this configuration. I believe the show is anything but “clunky.”
    I just wanted to say that.

    Love the survival guide, but I don't think the plays should be thought of as any less than musicals. Both require an immense amount if work, and should be treated as such

    I still love Be More Chill even with the changes. I think it still has its heart no matter if the sets get more extravagant or the new squip Keanu Reeves impression is completely different. When I went to go see it on Broadway I cried because the music and the words that touched my soul we're still 100% there.

    Tootsie is often hilarious, with a great cast. But it is messy in it's attempts to update. It tacks on some references to modern gender politics, which is confusing since the look and feel of the show is very 80's. They address how he is unfairly taking a role opportunity away from women, but not trans issues. And without the input of a non-cis writer they would never approach or rework the original material in a really significant way. Either because they feel unqualified to discuss it, or because they don't really care enough about the issue
