Lol, you have so much great music in front of you. Ten years of ass kicking rock. One thing about The Maids. They don't play a genre, Band Maid IS a genre. Pop, punk, prog, thrash, rock, metal. They do it all, and better than anyone else.

This band single handedly rejuvenated my love for music again.....my playlist was all 70's and 80's music. And was kinda burned out on it.
Band Maids writing and musicianship is second to none....and after seeing them live last year has turned me into a Maidiac!!!!!
This band live will blow you away and the relationship with us fans is so special.....hence their concerts are called Servings !!!!!

great to see you reacting to the Maids. Lovebites were in attendance at this show, and were spotted by the Maids and waved to. the 2 drummers Haruna from Lovebites and Akane from Band Maid are friends that often celebrate birthdays together when possible. In June the Warning will be visiting Japan for the first time and doing a joint concert with the Maids on June 12. they met at Aftershock Festival and it turns out the bands are fans of each other so it should be an amazing show, plus hopefully a collab like they recently did with Mike Einziger of Incubus for the song "Bestie" whom they opened for recently in Tokyo. cheers

This was their 10th anniversary tour final concert at Yokohama Arena. They will be 11 years together with the same lineup in coming August.
"10 minutes of limp gymnastics"...the direct translation of the Japanese lyrics is "about 10 minutes of poor exercise". So it is about right😏
In an interview, Saiki (lead vocal) explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it. "はて?" can be translated as "What?"

Welcome to the BandMaid experience. The greatest proper rock and roll band of the 21st century. Here's some opinions and facts:
•Bass solos are more likely to happen than not
•Guitar solos are shorter, far shorter than you would like them to be
•Unless you are superhuman, you will not/ can not be able to pick up everything they're doing to make that song great on the first listen.
•Genre? Genres?? We don' need no stinkin" genre!
•You like a hard rocking crazy fast tune? Well how about it done as a slower acoustic version? They do that.
    •April Fools Day 2019
As a joke they recorded a redo of Secret my Lips with traditional instruments and with lyrics in a Kyoto dialect. MV is stunningly beautiful.
•The linchpin member of the band gets the least notice/praise. The Mighty Miku Kobato founder/lead singer steps back to make way for a new more hard rock vocalist. They want her to hold a guitar so she does and learns to play on the fly, performing all the while she's learning. So the person who willed the band into existence, who is the primary lyricist, the only member who sings and plays an instrument most of the time gets the least comments from reactors. Oh yeah she has her own signature model guitar from Zematis (after playing less than 10 yrs)
•There is no "I" in BANDMAID. Well ok there is one "I" but my point is the songs are written by BandMaid. Not just Kanami Tono. The highly innovative bass and drum lines are created by Akane and MISA. There are no George songs and John&Paul songs. There are only BandMaid songs.
•10 plus years with the same line up. Think about that.
•More hooks, riffs and motifs in many songs than most bands have on an album. Check it out. No hyperbole.
•Use of puns, wordplay using homophones between Japanese and English are not the exception. They are typical of Kobato's lyrics.
•Despite the fact that their LIVE videos are superior to the official studio MV"s the latter are excellent. Funny, graphic, innovative and stunningly beautiful works of art describe what you get with BandMaid's official MV's.
•As close to the Beatles in terms of unique persona of the members as any group since the Monkees. MISA is quiet and drinks. Akane is happy and eats, Miku is klutzy and CUTE, Kanami is an airhead who crushes on Saiki and Saiki was the Ice Queen. But the Ice Queen has thoroughly thawed. See Yokohama's Endless Story! Their image is carefully crafted or spontaneous or both.
•Many songs have catch phrases or singalong sections to engage the audience. Many songs are in English and Japanese. Most songs are full of joy as well.
•They're having a ball. They enjoy performing. They enjoy the fans. They enjoy each other.
•Make no mistake, this is not a regular band.

  • @philcalvino884

Band-Maid is an amazing hard rock band that play an incredible range of styles, while always retaining their own singular sound. Hard, soft, fast, slow, punk, metal, acoustic, etc. If you like variety and spice in your hard rock, Band-Maid is it. Kanami is the lead guitarist and a genius songwriter. You will never get the same song twice. The lead vocalist and (in this case) the lyricist is Saiki. The one who looked most like a maid is Miku (founder, rhythm guitar, backup vox, primary lyricist). The incredible rhythm section is comprised of MISA (bass) and Akane (drums). If you want to hear a great ballad from the same show, try Endless Story. Or if you want to go back to where they started and the song that saved them, start with Thrill and just keep going forward!

After seeing your reaction, I asked a few students about Band-Aid. One of the girls told me that her aunt has a Band-Aid car. The car is completely covered in photos of the band. Of course, people here overdo many things. For example, we have themed 7-11s here. You can see Pokemon stores, One Piece stores, Spy Family stores. And the restaurants are worse. One near my home is called "Toilet Restaurant". Food is served in toilets and urinals. Ice cream is shaped like poo. Another, unfortunately it's closed now, is an H. R. Ginger teahouse. They've pretty much evolved away from the maid outfits but not totally. The drummer is sort of like a Bell Boy, the lead guitarist is dressed like a goth Victorian maid. Of course, there's the rhythm guitarist who is the most maid-like (she's the band founder). The lead vocalist and the bassist pretty much didn't want to dress as maid from the get-go. lol

BUT this particular band, Band-Maid, has changed everything since I found them on UA-cam, two years ago. This band is creating something "NEW" based on hard rock music. They're Not just bringing the rock/metal back to the present. That's why I love this band so much♪

  • @GlennWH26
    @GlennWH26 6 місяців тому +6

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. Poker shark and horse racing fanatic. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Definitely eccentric, possibly insane.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors. A sweet, motherly woman who turns into a beast when you hand her a guitar.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Completely unflappable. Frequently snacks between songs. Has been known to sign her banana peels and throw them to the audience.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. Regards her band mates, especially Kanami and Miku, with bemused exasperation. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

I hit 70 a few months ago and i have been listening to rock and attending concerts since the late 60s', i've seen most of the top classic rock bands, several multiple times, i would stand these ladies up beside and have them go toe to toe with almost all of them, after 10+ years together with the same line-up they can read each other like a book (tight doesnt really cover it), they write their own music and lyrics, and for all intents and purposes they are one of the best touring rock bands in the business today

  • @hiawatha.g
    @hiawatha.g 6 місяців тому +8

You have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative band since the Beatles, and they are top-tier musicians.
I saw many of the classic rock bands - Purple, Zeppelin, Queen, Santana, many more, all in their heyday. I’ve seen Band-maid three times and their performances stand up to any of those legendary bands.
You are going to get a lot of suggestions. First, a little background on the band:
Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994
    MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992
Kanami Tono - Lead guitar, Main composer and arranger Born Sept 28, 1991
Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991
Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990
Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual shred.
The band was struggling early on, and in 2014, even as the label was considering dropping them, they posted the music video for “Thrill” which went viral globally. When they realized what was going on, it gave them the momentum to forge ahead, and they have now done multiple tours of Europe and the U.S. and are building a global fanbase who call themselves the Maidiacs.
They have released seven full albums, as well as several EPs, singles and music videos. They have put out around 170 songs, covering a wide variety of styles and sounds, without any duds. They combine a punk vibe with instrumental virtuosity (two things that are often seen as being incompatible), and have done some amazing progressive-rock songs and ballads with a metal edge to them.
They toured the U.S. in 2022 and sold out 14 cities in less than 48 hours. They followed it up with a 2023 tour which had to be expanded from their original plans. Their fan base skews heavily to actual practicing musicians. Some of those followed the band to multiple dates and documented everything on youtube-some of the footage is hilarious.
I’ve seen them in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Their shows are truly life-reaffirming. So far no announcements of another European tour but it seems likely in 2024.
Band-Maid are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio. Everything they have posted from their 10thAnniversary concert in Yokohama is absolute fire-I have bought the DVD and recommend you do too. 33 songs, 3 hours of insanity. The best clip on YT from that concert is “Hate?” which you just watched.

Nice. Thanks for the reaction. I think of Band Maid a punk inspired hard rock with some metal influence and pop vocals. A total fusion that seems like it should be a mess. Yep - you're right about the drummer's feet. She's known for her double pedal craziness. Best band there is - I've not missed a day in the last five years listening to them. And the "Hate" comes from a friend of hers whose boyfriend and/or husband cheated on her during covid. The lead singer wrote the lyrics and they even made her tone them down! (usually the rhythm guitarist/band founder/backup vocals writes the lyrics.) They also play lots of different styles and genres, so there's something in their catalogue for everyone. Beautiful ballads? Hard groove 70's ish rock? Fast metal/rock - check check and check.

This song was not written, for once, by Miku (on rhythm guitar, the only one who now wears a maid outfit) but by the vocalist, Saiki. The question mark is there because there is a Japanese word "はて” that is alphabetically spelled "hate". When Saiki wrote the lyrics of this song, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you", and she also realized that the English word "hate" can be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて” is generally used in question, she decided to put "?" after "HATE"
1:54 - The translation is correct on this performance, though admittedly they can get words wrong sometimes. I've translated 6 of Band-Maid's MV's that didn't have subtitles in English and was pretty pleased with them...but did make a beginners error on one of them by assuming what I heard was an English phrase when in fact it was part of the Japanese lyrics. It happens. In their live MV, from this same gig, for the song DON'T YOU TELL ME, they use the word "Dye" instead of "Die". 🤘🤘PS As Alexander Pope once said "Whoever thinks a perfect piece to see, thinks of what never was, nor is, nor ever shall be". A man who hadn't seen Band-Maid play live, obviously!

Any Maids track always ROCKS!!! The ladies are in their early 30s now and have been rocking for almost 10 years with plenty of Solo work from Misa, Kanami and Akane. The great thing is they always look so happy.
Try Thrill the track that blew them up on the world stage, after a slow start it suddenly went viral outside of Japan (the label was about let them go when this happened in 2015), Freedom, Onset, From now on, Without Holding Back, Hate? Are all great tracks and they have an extensive back catalogue.
Welcome Masters and Princesses to the 5 Band-Maid members:
SAIKI Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. The youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions.
MIKU Kobato (Me-Ku), "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals and lyricist. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR Spokes Pigeon. I believe she couldn’t play when she formed the band and was tutored by Kanami.
KANAMI Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want is more!
AKANE Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party!
MISA (Me-Sa), "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA!

It's the compulsory requirement for each Japanese student to master 2 instruments at the primary school level, then in high school the girls most likely continue to marching and/or symphony bands, or club bands, usually Rock or Pop. Guys usually go to Sports and abandon music. Band Maid and Lovebites (and many others girls bands of many genres) are the product of this type of school system support. That's what's in the water in Japan, Po! Japan Rocks! 🦍🍌

This is from their ten-year anniversary tour. This is one of Misa and komicho's infamous faceoffs. The drummer, Akane Hirose, did not know girls were allowed to play rock drums until she saw Nao, the drummer from MAXIMUM THE HORMONE playing. She is now one of Jimmy Page's favorite drummers.
MAXIMUM THE HORMONE is VERY influential in the Japanese rock/hard rock/metal scene. Sooner or later, you will get recommendations for them and, as a warning, they are a WILD ride. Multiple time, key and genre changes in the same song.
Believe it or not Band Maid was almost dropped by their management company and were saved by a UA-cam music video. To see their first YT MV look for the video for their song, Thrill.

In fact, my wife is from Japan, and she is the absolute opposite of a demure little lady. She's incredibly opinionated, hot-headed, and swears like a sailor. She says she should've been Italian.
Anyway, these ladies have been together for a long time, have incredible chemistry together, and insane talent. And they're not as young as many people think. They're in their early 30s, and I hope they're still rocking out in their 50s.

That's Misa on bass and Kanami on lead guitar having a little duel. Misa is more of a lead guitarist playing bass, she's that good. Akane back there on the drums, and Saiki on lead vocals.
Miku (rhythm guitar/ vocals) formed the band in 2013 , she used to work in a Japanese maid café, and the aesthetic was her vision. 7 albums to date.
Band Maid is more hard rock, and LOVEBITES is more heavy metal. This is a newer video. To see where they came from, try "Thrill", the song that got them going and saved the band.
Japan has more where that came from. Check out Nemophila with the song "Oiran" (official live).🤘🤘

The Japanese, pretty generally, love puns. The language is especially rich for puns, with the spoken language, plus Kanji plus two syllabaries. One of them in romanji, which is to say Latin letter renderings of Japanese syllables. The title of Hate? is a pun, based on the romanji.
In Japanese, the expression ha-te ("hah-teh") is always a question, meaning something like "Is that so?". (I think.) So, Saiki made a visual pun based on the resemblance of the English word "hate" and Japanese romanji for "ha-te". But once you listen to the song, of course, the implied question is answered!
BAND-MAID are my favorite band in the world. I saw them live last year in the US, and yes, this is what they sound like! That said, Japan has a vast stock of great rock and metal bands. Many of the all-female ones are especially talented and ferocious. E.g., Lovebites, Hanabie, Gacharic Spin, Nemophila, Trident, Hagane, Bridear.
Subscribed, and thanks for the reaction! A mixed-sex band I heartily suggest, too. Maximum the Hormone. I suggest starting with Yoshu Fukushu, Hungry Pride, or (if you want to jump into the deep end, first) A.L.I.E.N.

Best rock band on the planet. Lovebites may be the best power metal band on the planet. I'm a Band Maidiac though. Actually Band Maid can play any genre and if you watch them long enough you'll find out how good they really are. Watch NO GOD live from their online performance because the sound is better. You'll find out how good the bass player really is.

From some Japanese fans I have heard the question mark on HATE? has something to do with a play on words. So kind of a joke more than meant to cast any doubt about if she hates them lol

The "10 minutes" part means "shoboi exercise" in Japanese. "Shoboi" is an expression that refers to something that is "no big deal" or "insignificant" or has no value. In the context, it can be understood that it refers to men and women, but it is not slang for Japanese people, and the words only express that they are worthless.

Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this very performance at the venue on Nov.26, last year. Very exciting 3-hour-40-minute-long show with 33-song setlist. (Happy fatigue thereafter 😄)
Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Lovebites, who you have already reacted to, is one of them.
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Yay, we're 2 for 2 with the ladies of Japan!
We can all stop with stereotypes of Japanese women being soft and subservient.
Back in the 70s, there was a girl gang who dressed like school girls. Except these school girls carried knives and bats which they would use anytime guys would get fresh!
Ain't gonna lie, but I think that's awesome!
The translation was correct! This song is about a cheating husband/boyfriend that Saiki wrote about what a friend was going through.
I suggest Don't You Tell Me live from this same concert, next.
Can we go 3 for 3?
    Hanabie - We Love Sweets!👊🐺🤘

There are several new metal bands out there, some excellent, like Spiritbox, but yeah, Japan has definitely some of the best, like Band-Maid, or Hanabie.
