  • Another member of the makerspace sent me this file because the cut wasn't turning out like she expected it to. She was getting double cuts on several lines and some shapes were getting cut out that she didn't want at all.
Watch how I explore the file to see what might be going wrong.

its great watching how you deal with objects Vectorised (Yes I'm English!)
by _Other_ People. One thing I always like to do, to see what's actually going on is to view it in *Outline' Mode. It saves so much time, plus it lets you see immediately if it has been badly Vectorised. Great upload nonetheless thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I didn't know about Outline Mode, but will be using that from here on!

maybe similer problem, but this is with engraving. I drew lines and circles with different stroke width (no fill) on inkscape, I wanted to laser engrave those lines& shapes with different stroke .svg , but it is showing all as same stroke width into laserGRBL, if I convert say a circle (stroke-to-path) I get two circles inside each other in LaserGRBL🤯

Interesting, it's possible that you have two items that are grouped and thus wouldn't separate. You can see whether this is true by either opening the Layer and Objects box under the Object menu and seeing what objects are there, or by using ctrl-shift-g several times to ungroup.

Decent tutorial. It just shouldn't be this hard in the first place.

Does the Path-break apart command only work on objects or will it work on text? I’m getting some funny results on Hershey Text. Also does it work as you’ve show on open paths?

Very good questions, I'll see if I can help. The path-break apart command will likely only work on paths, so to use it with text, you'll have to first use Object to Path on the text. This unfortunately means you can't edit it as text anymore, so I usually save this for as close to the end as I can (and sometimes even save as a separate file at that point).
It should work with open paths, but it doesn't usually have the effect you might expect. If I recall correctly, Hershey text is a single line font, which means the effect will just be separating the letters, if anything (will probably need to Object to Path first too). If you use the Stroke to Path command before Break Apart, you might get the behavior you're looking for.
Once you convert text to a path, take a look at it with the Edit Paths by Nodes tool on the left-hand toolbar. On letters like "a" and "p" and such you'll see that there's a set of nodes on the inside of the letter and another set on the outside. The Break Apart command just separates these into separate paths that you can manipulate independently.

I’m trying to use break apart since I have an outer line and an inner line like in the video, but when I do it, it just creates a black box? Any suggestions?

That's a great question! Usually when using Break Apart it separates each line into its own shape, filled in. My guess is that both of your shapes are where you expect them to be, but hard/impossible to see. Right after you use Break Apart, but before deselecting the new shapes, open the Fill and Stroke menu and either remove the Fill or lower the opacity so you can see the separate shapes. If you remove the Fill, you may also need to add a Stroke if it makes everything invisible. Let me know if that helps!

I would really like to know who the idiot was at Inkscape to make it draw a double line in the first place: everyone on Earth only wants it to cut once!
