well.. might as well continue the story... 8 -14 -91. Left Eel River after the meteor shower, i think i spent the better part of the day looking for the strangers car I left my guitar and pack in before i swam the river.. the plan was to get down to Lake Tahoe and see the Festival at Squaw Valley. Had ten days to kill, during which time my poison ivy eventually disappeared. I think we camped at Shasta or some Rainbow holding camps we came across. I could check my old journals but i'm too lazy.. I remember two such camps, and a couple hot springs. I don't recall most of the hitching specifically though.. but eventually got Squaw parking lot late weds day night. Here's the problem. This show was sold out super hard. Zero chance to get a ticket. JGB, Bela Fleck, Jimmy Cliff, Neville Brothers, Tower Of Power and Garcia/Grisman acoustic. Everyone wanted to see Jerry play Ripple and NO WAY you are getting a ticket. The other problem was it was a gondola ride up the mountain to get in. Squaw valley is a ski hill similar to Whistler or Sunshine Valley, this ain't no blue mountain. Just to get to the bottom of the slopes you had to climb a mountain for a day, then you had to climb the slopes for a day. Many heads didn't have the balls to do it. It was a big gamble. If you got caught and put in the gondola it would be another two days to get back up. You'd miss the show. We left all our gear, and guitar in someones bus. I took a sleeping bag and Brian took his mexican blanket. Headed up the mountain for the night. The first days climb was deep in the tree line, huge boulders and pines, couldn't see far but that suited us fine, not likely to get caught. We just headed up and knew the mountain would get smaller eventually.. Slept in a crevasse too worried to make a fire or use flashlights. Didn't see a soul. Day two in the morning we hit the slopes. We could move faster but we were worried that we could be seen. Never did see anyone though. Slopes were massive and we just kept walking or crawling up under the chair lifts. Finding age old groundscores of things that skiers lost and had been under the snow for ages. Still didn't see another soul, but the hills were so big you could have hid an army. Hit the summit late at night. Cold as heck, and now that we were over the top of the mountain and faced the ski bowl down on the inside of the mountain...we were too scared to even talk. We couldn't tell how close we were to the possibility of security. We hid in bushes and planed to make the move down the bowl in the morning. Just a few more miles to go and the show was starting at 1pm. No turning back. Getting caught wasn't an option. We had been climbing for 48 hours. Sunrise. To afraid to stand up we hid in bushes till we had enough light to be sure of our footing. I have a perfect memory of that morning. I saw something move in a bush a few dozen yards away. It was a hippie. Just a short distance but we never saw him the night before. As the light came up, it became clear that behind every bush and tree, gully and ditch on that ski bowl, was a hiding hippie. Silent as mice all night long. To afraid to even talk to each other. Hundreds of folks spread out over a few miles of slopes. All thinking the same thing. Down below, a couple of miles was a line of white shirts , likely 50 or so. Security coming up the mountain. They knew we'd be there. Try crawling for two miles down a ski hill into a festival. Greatest game of capture the flag ever! The show was history. Bill Graham even gave out shirts saying "I climbed a mountain for two days to see Jerry". Climbed back up at night of Day one to sleep. Rinse and repeat day two. This story reads better with Garcia/Grisman's "Arabia" playing in the background. Greatest concert ever. And he played Ripple.
jamjax brother the story of the climb to the show you had to see...... priceless!!! I have many too... been that hippie real quiet in the trees....hahaha... what a ride!!! Jam on... keep dancing
Thanks for posting this awesome story. It sort of mirrors some of my own. If I was on the West Coast at the time I would have attempted it too. Keep on keepin' on!!
The last time that me and my brother went to a show together. The last time that I felt like we would be in each other's lives forever! "It gets me right here in the heart, it's close to home" as Brent beautifully put it so long ago!!
This show is the mark of when my life changed in a very big way. So many events conspired to bring me home, and the home is my heart. Its been one heck of a journey since. Jerry played such a major role in who I am, and for that I am eternally Grateful. Thank You Family :)
A kindred soul! Jerry got me where I am today. He and his music bring me "home" when I need it the most. I miss him more than I can express in words. Jerry lives!!
In this remarkable later stage of Jerry's life stood a woman who sacrificed her life for his, my loving mother Marioska Zeman, God bless both my mom & Jerry now grateful for eternity!
I was there both days. My friends and I were great by Bill Graham riding an Enduro or some sort of dirt bike. We rode the "eggs" to the top and stepping onto the mountain I remember thinking, "How strange to be here when there is no snow." The whole weekend was so surreal especially when Jerry's sheet music started to blow away. Why does he need sheet music I wondered and was then blown away myself by the music and the great relaxed atmosphere. Miss you so much Jerry.
I saw bill roll up on that Enduro on some young girls sneaking into lower lot of shoreline 92? When they were trying to keep ticketless people out if lot . He jumped off , dropped bike and started yelling like a mad man .. they had no clue who he was and ran ..
Bill Graham was the man! Best promoter ever. To see Ripple live acoustic with Dave was epic. Jerry and Dave were so in sync. And the wind! Squaw summer conditions. I still got my ticket. I wish I could post it. So many good memories. Great quality. Many Mahalos!
Thanks for this! I was there. Rode up from Santa Cruz in a Vanagon with some fine people. Hiked up from the parking lot to the bowl both days. Skinny dipped in a mountain lake on the way. Wind was bad second day but the atmosphere was amazing. Hung out with a beautiful Labrador Retriever named Cassidy. Drove back to Santa Cruz and I went to my first day of college Monday morning still tripping a bit. Some of the best times of my life.
fell in love with "two soldiers " via Dylan, but was SO SO happy to hear Jerry and Dave rock it, such a pretty song, heard it on their album too, Jerry just rules, also love "handsome cabin boy " from shady grove ......Jerry had quite a way with those traditional songs, so from the heart
Totally YES! This was the day I kind of "discovered" Russian Lullaby, and Arabia. And their take on So What was mind blowing. Took me a while to even remember what song it was and how I knew if before, but that didn't matter. Just great music all day! Even with the wind trying to carry it away from my ears occasionally. The weird moments of silence made for a strange and interesting experience too.
If Jerry were alive today, and only played acoustic music, I think anything he and David Grisman put together would command the same level of respect as the old masters like Bill Monroe. I would love to se this on higher quality video if that ever becomes possible. Thanks for posting this Voodoonola2
Got to see and say hi to Jerry, being driven up the mountain by a friend who picked him up at the airport. Incredible 2 day show, one of the best weekends of my 38 years living in Tahoe. Many years later, got to meet David at the Bluegrass Festival behind Hard Rock Tahoe and Joe Craven at a Valhalla workshop, he even played my daughters violin. (Which she'll never get rid of now, even though we've upgraded to a better one)
I was at these shows. Such a great time, except that I didn't bring sun screen and I remember my bottom lip and face got sunburned big time the first day so I made the 2nd a bit painful!
I'm sorry the man can play. Jerry doesn't suck either🧓 More jazzy seeded goodnessw& inspiried playing on deck, pls listen again and weekly therafter for 40yr brilliance we'll never see again. TY the lovely u/l folks, love you madly ciao #acousticdisc #dawg
this is why i loved Gerry Garcia best, no guitar sound like Gerry"s! SWEET! Grisman, sweet as well. What a pair. I will wear this digital out in no time. Tnks
Well, that and incredible music from an amazing line-up, beautiful scenery, friends, and a concert area uncrowded enough to play frisbee in during an awesome concert. One of the best. Up near the stage, the heavy wind blowing the sound away for a second or two at a time was weird but everything was so great it could not hamper the day !
They performed this a few weeks after my daughter was born, she just saw Dave at UCLA a year ago and got her pic taken with him! Her dad was a great fan, he died two years ago....this brings back great memories of seeing the Dead and Dave Grisman dawg music many many times together.
It was so windy at the top of the ski run a speaker fell on Jerry's toe and they stopped the show while he hopped around on one foot ....when the sun went down...lots of frozen hippies huddled around...?? What a long strange trip it was...
What a surreal video this is, like a dream with the grainy low resolution and bright exposure. The sound quality is perfect and the group was on point perfectly as you would expect. When you have mastered your craft as they had, it’s all just a hoot.
You just made my day this concert popped in my head and thanks to you I am there freezing my ass off on top of squaw it was a surreal experience How I miss tahoe lived there from 1983 to 1999 returned to Ireland Great view of Lake round 43 min Salamat Kerry
Thanks for posting this - the audio is good. Brings back some hilarious, fun memories of that weekend. I was so "energetic" on Sunday a friend and I walked down the mountain instead of taking the ganja-la! Skiing down at 50 mph is one thing, but that's a pretty serious hike... in the dark... trippin' your @%*'s off! - Ha ha
Great shows. I remember having to ride the ski lift up the mountain over the exposed, jagged rocks 40 feet below. I damn near plotzed (don't dig heights)! The music was was sensatioal all around. Booker T & The MG's kicked ass, as did Jimmy Cliff. I also clearly remember severe wind gusts throughout and this video reveals just that. I vaguely recall Garcia's acoustic amp being blown off of its precarious perch. I'm talkin' WINDY! Thanks for the great video sync job with a board recording.
Yeah! This is the best audio I've found anywhere from this excellent amazing festival. (there are videos around with slightly better video quality, but their audio is pretty bad)
The whole late summer 91 Dead / Jerry run was my favorite month of music. Jerry at the Eel and Squaw. Cal Expo and Shoreline. I did GDTS for the 8/18 show at shoreline and mentioned that it was my buddy's birthday on the envelope. They sent me front row center. Row BBB. Jerry was maybe 3 feet from me. It was quite intense.
Loving all your videos! I saw my share of shows, still seeing them in fact. What's most awesome though is that my three year old baby boy gets to see the magic thanks to your vids! Love it! Much appreciated!
Yes thats what I love most about the tube, my 4 and 5 year olds have listened to this great music since day 3.. Thats when we got home from the hospitol.. first song they ever heard was a Garcia tune.. Brent mydlands I will take you home was fitting too..
Wow great upload thank you! I was lucky enough to see the Grateful Dead in Bonner Springs, and Denver that year..Santana opened up for them at Mile High stadium and there was a giant full moon above the stage that night, truly epic.
Rode the Ganja-La both days it was incredible. Bill Graham got choked up during the Intro, was truly moving!!! Booker T & the MG's rocked!!! Miss these days all the time, but so thankful to have had them!!! Garcia was a special player & person, I got off the bus shortly after this. Except for Garcia Band shows & a handful of dead shows. In the end I think he was happiest with Grisman & the acoustic music,it was extraordinary !!!!
scott rembac I was in my VW bus and testing out a new sheet I purchased ... was on my way up to the Gondola and ..... my shoelace ....broke. Was a very serious cosmic issue .... but it worked out and made it up the hill! :) Glad your daughter made it as well!
Nothing makes a day feel more like....(iykyk) Thanks for rocking this video 10 years strong on your Google account. I realize our personal internet space is limited. At least we can use yours!
Had no tickets so me and two friends and a 6 month old malamute that would a year later become my dogs momma walked up that mountain to gain entry. Maybe halfway through the climb 2 of us made a bad choice and turned left instead of right and ended up on as steep of a face as you would ever want to climb free handed. I froze at a spot where I thought I could climb no higher so my more skilled friend climbed past me and I climbed up and over him to get me going again. That caused my friend to slide a good twenty feet down the cliff before he could gain a good hold again. He made it back to where I was above him and we found are way to the top for what was likely the best weekend of music of my life.
Incredible, was here, remember it being very windy high on the mountain top, 20 years old and don't remember much besides it being a very very special time. Also saw people without tickets scaling up the mountain
I remember spraying Bill Graham with a hose when he was riding his dirt bike around the lower lot while we were all brushing our teeth. My Buddy Steve (RIP) climbed to the top without a ticket to see, not Garcia or Grisman, but Tower of Power. The BGP goon at the top saw how sweaty and tired he was from the climb and gave him a wristband for the rest of the show. Aside from the wind noise it was an amazing weekend.
Thank you for this - one of the coolest venues I had ever been to. Two days of sweet sweet music up at Squaw Valley ..….with the Ganjola ride up before the shows & a sweet beautiful stroll down (or the Ganjola) the peak of the mountain after…..Electric Jerry Band with various other bands on day1 and acoustic Jerry Band on day 2
Man this is great stuff! That is so cool that it was on top of a mountain. That just adds to the beauty of it. If I wasnt 9 yrs old maybe I would have been there.
Thanks for sharing, great sound which is surprising considering the video quality. Re-Run from What's Happening would be proud! What a great scene that looks like, nice and laid back....
Thank you for posting The metal set the next day is even better Please try to find the first jerry show that was the first with the band we grew to love Wolf and Rismiller country club reseda Ca 1982 two shows early and late one set each Completely destroys and truly with precision and love tipped our faces clean off our head One of the greatest Jerry shows of all time Like a steam locomotive out of control and magnificent Jerry Saves {~}:=} 🎼🌈
lost my favorite sweater the 1st day...went back day 2 to the teeny tiny shed they had for lost&found. I described it, the girl reached around behind her and held it up by the sleeve; "is this it?" wild!! Such a fun time. Jerry holding onto his amp in one of the howling gales....seeing all that great music. Booker T rocked the house! seeing uncle bill on motorcycle on the hike down the mountain...I love this time machine (youtube) where we get to go back & revisit/live thank you so much Ed
If only the sound was this good that day on the mountain! The winds took the sound and swirled it around it was not great ;) but the whole experience sure was !
Can't find the adjectives to describe how wonderful this is....... quite the GEM and that story about climbing in ..Wow the 2 go together like pb n j should be printed on the album , CD ,DVD to let others know what we were willing to do to get a chance to see Jerry !!! ✌ To all 😂
It was windy and cold...The night before...I think this was the Sunday show..but anyhow, I talked with Billy Graham and told him this was a pain in the ass to walk up the hill to see the show...in fact I think it was the Jerry Garcia Band the night before..the next day I saw Bill coming down the hill on a scooter in a sling...I just smiled at him and I think he was good with it. Never spoke with our beloved Bill Graham again after that>>>
spent the night crawling in and out and all over the Caltrans snowcats in the Caltrans yard marveling that I was virtually invisible. The stars were gorgeous... Funny and true...Remember the tables in the middle of the venue with the "plant bush" stickers???Just checkin
I remember riding the "Ganjola" up the hill as folks were lighting up,,, the driver actually stopped and threatened to turn the gondola around if we didn't put it out...
I was at this concert and the real highlight was the finale when The Neville Brothers played. Due to heavy winds Jerry and David, who were supposed to close the show, played a beautiful set, but the winds made it difficult to hear in the further reaches of the field high atop Squaw Valley. Many dedicated Dead fans parted after the set and magically the winds died, the skies opened a full yellow moon shone bright. The Nevilles played many songs off their Yellow Moon album to the delight of the faithful, who got to move up closer to the stage to immerse into the magic in the air that night. Charles Nevilles Saxophone floated about the valley like a musical snake with wings. Sure Jerry and David were OK with that outcome. Anyone know if any footage of Nevilles out there?
Too windy up there on the mountain for mics. You can hear it. I climbed the mountain got in for free. Thought I could catch Jerry and David that day....they played first and I missed it! Nevilles' were great though!
what a show what a nite-still see the color of the sky at twilight-windy in the afternoon but settled down nicely-thanks for this even though it makes me cry
The last time I saw Jerry Live - and there was a JGB element to this festival also and the Neville Bros, I forget the line up, Jimmy Cliff maybe ? ....but I am sure google knows
Jerry Garcia really played the ah,em out of Miles Davis' So What. Seemed like his jazz chops were really on. And I hear "Dear Old Stockholm" in the Risky lullaby performance. Perhaps both tunes have similar progressions.
Anyone else in 2023 watching this?????
⚡️Daze❤️🔥Between⚡️
Yep. Coming up on a 50th reunion of these two geniuses. Preparing to hear a tribute concert ahead of time.

Awesome story,,thanks for sharing man...A hippie behind every bush ,,now thats my kind of hill...
Best show I ever went to in my life and the jerry on the eel the same summer was like heaven on earth...
That Eel show was epic.
Both of those shows were so good!!

Jerry the Old Master... Dead as Beethoven and Mozart... all still bringing amazing joys to life.
Got to see and say hi to Jerry, being driven up the mountain by a friend who picked him up at the airport. Incredible 2 day show, one of the best weekends of my 38 years living in Tahoe.
Tahoe Native, Great to see this . My daughters 1st show :)
she shure is lucky!
scott rembac I was in my VW bus and testing out a new sheet I purchased ... was on my way up to the Gondola and ..... my shoelace ....broke. Was a very serious cosmic issue .... but it worked out and made it up the hill! :) Glad your daughter made it as well!
This show/collaboration is just so damn satisfying..
A quick ride on the tram followed by a short walk over the mesa did it for me.
Nothing makes a day feel more like....(iykyk) Thanks for rocking this video 10 years strong on your Google account. I realize our personal internet space is limited. At least we can use yours!
Excellent show I really enjoyed reliving this. I was there!
OH MY! Thank you for posting. Beautiful sound quality and dreamy video!
Mesmerizing how they’re paying such close attention to each other.
Thanks for putting this up unbelievable memories. We were in the middle of the bowl and had a hard time hearing the show, because of the wind.
Incredible, was here, remember it being very windy high on the mountain top, 20 years old and don't remember much besides it being a very very special time. Also saw people without tickets scaling up the mountain
more like a LONG steep walk than actually scaling or mountaineering, but awesome that they let people. It still was not at all crowded at the top :)
I cant turn this up loud enough!
so good
I remember spraying Bill Graham with a hose when he was riding his dirt bike around the lower lot while we were all brushing our teeth.
Two days of sweet sweet music up at Squaw Valley ..….with the Ganjola ride up before the shows & a sweet beautiful stroll down (or the Ganjola) the peak of the mountain after…..Electric Jerry Band with various other bands on day1 and acoustic Jerry Band on day 2
Started in 71 and 300 shows later was there was only joy and good fortune all the way. Tim
That's Jim Kerwin on Bass. It is not Rob Wasserman.
Thank you. I'd almost trade a lot of the shows I saw in '91 if I could have been there for this one.
Honeymoon adventure and capstone show. Could not have been more authentic!!!!
Wow! Jerry even played So What (12:55).
what a great show ,, thank you for postin it on up
That was a high time, all family, god is real and jerry garcia we miss u
Loving it! You just made my day! Amazing audio, nostalgic video. 😋
It sucks that Jerry died...but at least we have videos and recordings. This is wonderful!
this is bad ass....historic times captured on film!!
Loving the banjo on ripple
If it were my decision...this is what the happy hunting grounds would be...concerts in Paradise...those days were heaven on earth!
Thank you for posting
The metal set the next day is even better
Please try to find the first jerry show that was the first with the band we grew to love
Wolf and Rismiller country club reseda Ca
1982 two shows early and late one set each
Completely destroys and truly with precision and love tipped our faces clean off our head
One of the greatest Jerry shows of all time
Like a steam locomotive out of control and magnificent
Jerry Saves
{~}:=} 🎼🌈
Jerry seems so happy playing with David and the band. A good possibility he feels more musically challenged and he’s lovin’ it....
that wind was so magical.
A masterpiece
Great music
Great sound
Thanx for sharing
Sounds so much better than the windy audience tape i had in '91!
lost my favorite sweater the 1st day...went back day 2 to the teeny tiny shed they had for lost&found.
That guitar gets me everytime
If only the sound was this good that day on the mountain! The winds took the sound and swirled it around it was not great ;) but the whole experience sure was !
beautiful country - thanks for posting -
Drove up to this one with Dano; Bones; Richie & Big AL .. Good Times!
jamjax Crawled that road myself , Keep on Truckin Buddy .
I was at this show....it was windy as Hell, I bummed a Parlament cig off Jerry...
Smoking is bad for you. 😉 although I’d picked up smoking if Jerry offered me one.
I was there. Tower of Power, Booker T., Neville Bros. What a ripping show! Ride the ski lift up and down. Best
Agreed it was an amazing show. In the middle of Squaw. Loved the Tram ride up. What a trip!
Can't find the adjectives to describe how wonderful this is....... quite the GEM and that story about climbing in ..Wow the 2 go together like pb n j should be printed on the album , CD ,DVD to let others know what we were willing to do to get a chance to see Jerry !!! ✌ To all 😂
Garcia, Grisman, & Fleck together on stage. AMAZING. First and only time?
Fleck on banjo and the best musician of our lifetime - DAWG
Grisman and Garcia are together also on an american tv emission.
I cannot even remember that concert too high on mushrooms
I think the New Grass Revival opened for Garcia/Grisman on more than one occasion but could be wrong?
Sounds excellent 🙏🏼 much love ❤️⚡️✨
Thanks Voodoonola2! I just subscribed to your channel today and I'm lovin it! Keep em comin please!
I remember riding the "Ganjola" up the hill as folks were lighting up,,, the driver actually stopped and threatened to turn the gondola around if we didn't put it out...
Man I snuck in that show both days like so many others a very intense hike.
Bela Fleck adds such a nice addition to Ripple!
I never caught any David/Jerry shows unfortunately. Although 1991 was about the apex of my going to Dead shows. This is a very nice video.
91....wow...thenks for sharing.... It's real.
Too windy up there on the mountain for mics. You can hear it. I climbed the mountain got in for free. Thought I could catch Jerry and David that day....they played first and I missed it! Nevilles' were great though!
Good Lord! That was beautiful!!!
what a show what a nite-still see the color of the sky at twilight-windy in the afternoon but settled down nicely-thanks for this even though it makes me cry
I was at this show. Met my long term GF before I got married. It was windy as fuck here up there, surprised they were able to edited it out.
I get to see Grisman in about 10 days. so excited
The last time I saw Jerry Live - and there was a JGB element to this festival also and the Neville Bros, I forget the line up, Jimmy Cliff maybe ? ....but I am sure google knows
Truly great duo plus rythmn
big hands for this upload... thx a lot... from Germany... Martin
thanks for posting, damn fine music.
Jimi Mack, Thank God he didn't loose his toe! Same thing happened to a friend of mine & he lost his finger!
I LOVE these men more than words can say. ~♥~
Jerry Garcia really played the ah,em out of Miles Davis' So What. Seemed like his jazz chops were really on. And I hear "Dear Old Stockholm" in the Risky lullaby performance. Perhaps both tunes have similar progressions.
Thank you, thank you. Jerry, we miss you so much. David, you are a mando god
