Yeah. I know what you mean. Dude was some Big Tall Happy☀️. I guess after 59 years like any family percentage wise we’ve lost many that brought nothing but goodness to the stage or the scene. He helped me in my darkest hour. It’s what i wrote to him in that booklet we could sign to send to the family that they had at the Tuscany Shakedown at the Sphere. He suffered from depression caused by multiple spinal fusion surgeries like myself. Each surgery takes over a year to somewhat recover from. You never truly recover from but you learn to live with it. It robbed 9 years of my life. I didn’t think I would walk again nor did my doctors. This year I danced for 3 nights so miracles do happen. All kinds. To shows. To life. I wrote a letter to his family in that book to them we could sign at the Tuscany. Last time I saw him was GD50 then I was down. Missed shows since until this year. He inspired me with his Way Better Back program. And no meds won’t hide that kind of pain. I’ve tried. Trust me. Prescription or any other kind. Your sciatic nerve feels like it’s being pinched in a vice 24/7. Can make you lose your marbles. Even if they are King Solomons Marbles. 😂. I can laugh now again but he truly helped me. As did the music. Always. 4ever Grateful
Back in 1989, this was one of the first concerts that livestreamed on TV, in real time, Pay Per View style, and my Mom recorded it on VCR for me. She's not a Deadhead, but she knew I liked them, so she did that just for me. It lived on top of my VCR for over a decade, and I played it til the tape wore out...
I'm working hard in my workshop right now, with random Dead Shows playing on UA-cam, just letting the suggested 'next' videos play to keep me company while I work, so when I heard the blown amp intro, I immediately recognized it and got a tear in my eye for the reminder that my Mom has always looked out for me.
She is currently living in my guest room, and it gets tense sometimes, grown man, Mom living with me, trying to call shots in my house sort of thing...
SO hearing this particular show again kinda takes the edge off of that Family tension. It's my turn to look out for her~
My mom became grumpy only in her late years, but I never discount the incredibly special things she did for me ... such as your mom taping a TV concert on VCR for you. Mom's are the best, I'm glad you found this reminder to take the edge off of the current day Steve.

I just came downstairs from trying to help her setup Windows Office on her new laptop (that she bought in April), and she gets extremely agitated when you ask her any question about where she got the number that she's written on a post it note, why don't you copy and paste instead of trying to write it down... Oh, THAT number is just a security code, to verify your e-mail, and it expired 24 hours after it was sent... in April... We need a product key... What's your Microsoft Password? etc...
Extremely frustrating to try to help her set it up, because she basically wants you to do all of that and just make it work for her. No patience for the teamwork, when it comes to asking her for passwords, etc...
So then I come down here and open my own e-mail, and see your reply, which leads me back to this video and the memory is fresh again...

I spent three years taking care of my mom, watching her lights and laughs fade with dementia. Her house, her rules- or so she thought. Court involvement with legal conservatorship. 3 siblings, one I had to have thrown out on a restraining order. No help from the other two, in fact, our father, who was by this time nothing more to me than my mother's ex-drunk ex-husband, paid my sister's attorney to oppose me in settling the estate cuz he was afraid I'd come after him for a $100,000. divorce settlement he never paid. A big mess. I have no family anymore - my choice- only the Grateful Dead and the wonderful man who introduced me to their magic got me through. Sorry to be such a downer, but if you ask me, yes, absolutely I'd do it all over again. Your mother is your one and only, and if you're smart, you'll turn her on to the Dead while she can still appreciate music and magic. My mom's last intelligible utterance was "thank you for a real good time!" Crying now, I'll miss her forever. Do right by your mom; we'll all meet Jerry, Brent, Pigpen, Keith, Vince, Robert and John Perry in the great beyond for the best concert ever!

Brent Mydland is the most incredible thing to happen to the Grateful Dead since Jerry himself. It's amazing how much beauty he brings to the stage both, with hi keys and his voice. Incredible musician and in my opinion, the best keyboardist the Dead ever had. Amazing show!

This show a great example of Brent's brilliant piano touches. That big fat synth piano sound...his trademark from the late period of his stint. Those little repeating riffs . . . Bing bing bing ... he was the master at that stuff. 2:06:32. And he's out there during "Space" on this show . . .
Late 70's may be the best period to most (I historically have tended to agree, though I haven't deep dove any other time period as thoroughly), but Brent was the best of the three official members in that slot in the lineup. These '89 shows are blowing my fucking mind and making me reconsider that opinion. They just sound so great in 1989. This is my third in a row with the others being March 31 and July 7). Sticking around this area for a while I think.

I was spoiled. I worked for years at Sun Microsystems, the closest set of offices to Shoreline. I would literally walk five minutes from my lab to my seat, leaving my car in my company's lot.
I saw so many Shoreline shows I started to take them for granted, simply because they were not "rare" and there was no epic struggle , road trip, expenses, police hassles,etc., to up the ante. Now, thanks to Voodoonola et al., I have a massive new appreciation and a chance to re-appraise these great events.
Need proof there is a God? Frustrated '70's Deadhead in Florida, only able to see the occasional show, suddenly gets job 3,500 miles away, 1/4 mile from a venue where they play numerous shows a year!

Yeah, I live 16 minutes walk from Greek Theater. Which is super convenient, since there isn't any parking lot at The Greek.
It was never more than an hour away from home and my all time favorite place to see them. I went to about 20 shows from 85 till 92 and close to half of them were at the Shoreline. I might have been at this one, the set list if familiar.
I got bumped off a flight and so they gave me a free ticket anywhere in the US. I figured maybe a good place to go with that ticket was to California to catch a Shoreline show. Made perfect sense to me at the time. Still does.

Dude, that summer I moved out to San Francisco from Long Island, to join all of my friends who dropped out of college and moved out west 6 months prior, I arrived damn near broke on June 17th, and being a good little hustler, me and my boy, went to these shows,where we sold SAMWICHES~TSHIRTS~ doeses~ mushrooms. These shows were being broadcasted on pay pre~vie, but that Summer Solstice Show, was by far the show everyone wanted a ticket to. As I stated I was far to broke to afford the scalpers, and was just happy to be in California, tripping out, hustling up a few bucks, buying low, and selling just a little bit higher. As I thought of my boys back in Long Island, who for sure, payed the 29.95 to watch them on pay pre view, and the band began to play, I got miracled. This angel stepped to me, and said “you have the most wonderful energy I’ve felt today, here” and she handed me a ticket. My friends mouths fell open and asked for the remaining ICE COLD WHIPPETS,1 DOLLAR! As I entered the show, I caught glimpse of the camera man floating through the crowd, I became immortal. Indeed my friends back home were sitting around the tv, tripping on Acid, the VHS recording, and you can hear me off camera saying “camera’s? I love cameras” I jumped in front of the camera saying, “ Hey Kenny and Lou, it’s me Jim, I just got miracled There is nothing like a Hateful Dread show” if you watch the whole show, you’ll see me. I was 19, high on acid, and a beautiful a girl gave me free ticket, to my first west coast Dead show, because I, apparently had wonderful energy. the worm had turned for me, and I never looked back... I miss Grateful Deadshows. I miss tripping out, I miss my wisely misspent youth. I’m now 51, and last month was informed, that I had stage 4 cancer, and had between 6 months to two years left before the cancer will take my life, depending upon how my body reacts to theChemo therapy. Well the Chemo is not reacting well to my body. So it seems, I’ll be moving on sooner rather later. But for 10 years or so, I was...a golden god, or on drugs, either one is cool with me. And I will always be That Guy,from the Summer Solstice Show, back in 89, who got Miracled. And that’s not to shabby. Hello baby I’m gone good by, half a cup of rock and rye, farewell to you old southern skies, I’m on my way.

This was my very first Dead show. It was AMAZING. My face melted off, the moon was gigantic and orange, and I danced nonstop for three hours. Just magical.

What I love about this band is that they didn’t care if people recorded the concert. They shared because they have magic. They always will. I’ve seen it happen in my eyes. I lived listening to them with my friends on hot summer nights and at the lake. Watching the fires or burn its wispy smoke with sparkling smoke. What a beautiful sight to see in a countryside. I worked on this show. It was broadcast live on pay-per-view TV (Request TV) and I was working at the satellite receive station in New Jersey as Technical Director. We only had about a four hour window for the event which is why I think Bobby got so pissed off in the beginning because of all the technical delays. And which is why the last couple of minutes got cut off (why you don't see any live video footage at the very end of this video) We had to go into out next feature at the top of the hour (some lame ass movie). It took all my willpower to cut off Brokedown Palace before they were done. I was the only Deadhead working on this crew and remember arguing with the producer about cutting them off in the middle of a song, but I had to do it. It was SO close too, they only had about another minute left in the song, but the "folks at home" never got to see it.
Anyway, this video brought back lots of great memories, it was the Summer Solstice show, I had it cranked up in the control room (much to my coworkers dismay) and I even wore my tie-dye shirt to work that evening for the event. I took a lot of flack for that from my non-deadhead coworkers.
Oh and some people mentioned something about the FBI videotaping (not filming) people in the parking lot. I don't know about the FBI, but I know the Pay Per View cameras were everywhere, because we had to show SOMETHING before the show started and in between sets. So basically we had a couple of guys on handheld cameras (with very long cords) roaming around the fairgrounds showing all the folks walking around. It was nice to see all the deadheads, but after about 20 minutes it got kind of boring, but there was nothing else to show. It was a very long break!

My now fiancé brought me cd's from this show on our first date, a little more than 3 years ago (he drove to this show with his brother from So Cal)...perfect gift from him!! WE hadn't seen each other since High School Graduation. We were meant to be together! I was impressed and love him more every day! xoxoxo
I was way back up on the hill; great show, met Bob in between sets. Best trip I had while in the Army....drive up from Ft. Ord, a gal in my unit was a Deadhead. She and her husband invited me with them. She had just given birth days before, and brought the baby. Glad I found the video of the show!
OMFG.........THIS has to be one of the very BEST shows ever.....I thank the Great Spirit that I got to see this band perform 3 times in my life......all 3 times they had Brent at the keys too.......and for that, I will be eternally GRATEFUL.........
Home alone on New Year's Eve catching shows I couldn't have seen live, This is as good as it gets.
Every single time I hear this version of Brokedown Palace I break down. The trifecta of Jerry, Brent, and Clarence. The way the 2 of them interact with Clarence, both musically and in some sort mutual state of awe, just hits me right where it counts.
Ive listened tothis show 4 maybe five times just today. Ive laughed ive cried. Whole lot of smiles today thanks GD

Oh 1989, how I love you so. This show, like most that Summer is magnificent. Have been stuck in the 80's for the last month and have revisited shows from 6/89 & 7/89 many times. The boys at their best in the in that decade, in my humble opinion. Jerry's voice is so wonderfully soulful, Bobby is a beast and beautiful harmonies, compliments of Brent.Their playing is so tight. Such energy! Enjoy this Summer's shows, folks. Peace and Love!
Its hard to describe, but these guys blow me away the older I get....so few things in life that get better, that make me more puzzled as to why the music (whatever topic at hand is?) reveals ongoing richness and complexities that I definitely didn't appreciate when I was there/listened to bootleg or even a DVD release 10 years after. As a matter of fact, I can't think of anything that I loved in my teens/20's, that I know will allow me to get immersed in pure joy 30 years later.....and I know that Nursing Home I wind things down with 30 years hence I will be shaking my bones at some nursing home with these guys playing Loud and Live

I remember when, grateful to have been there. Rewatching this at age 50, I’m pretty impressed with my 15yr old self for recognizing great music when I heard it! The counterculture was super influential as a teenager, but the music is what always brings me back. NFA 🌹
I wish i could shake the hand of the person who posted this. I'm sitting here on a Saturday night, attending a Dead Show in my house. As close as I can get right now, which is close enough to make me smile. :)
On one more Saturday night, 3 years later, I'm cleaning out the house and rocking out during the COVID19 shelter at home times. Dancing with the Dead and the broom, all day in my home, god I miss them like that, those days, and yeah, I took it all for granted. When we can go out again, am gonna see Bobby and the rest as many times as I can. Thanks for posting, thank you Jerry and all, keep on truckin' guys and gals!

I saw my first shows this weekend - came all the way from germany to see them play - and it was well worth it :) They kept me coming back to more than 50 shows until '94 whenever I could make it to the US

The night that started the new direction in my life! I lived in Indiana at the time and was a sophomore in highschool. One of my dads old friends got us tickets to the Deer Creek show on 7-15 and I had no idea what I was about to get into. He invited us over to watch this show on cable pay per view before the DC show and wow was I excited after seeing this. I still had no idea of what the whole show experience was going to be like but was ready to go. Man I wish I could go back to those times...I miss it so much.

This show broke my heart into pieces...from ecstatically high to low as hell. Thank you for the all the emotions of spirituality, From the depths of Hell to the /Highest of Heaven. I was at this show left of stage in about 10th row....it was a major heat wave in the upper 90's in The Bay Area, hot as hell.... this is one of my favorite shows and I've seen over 150 GD shows. I remember my ears rang for days because we were right at the Speakers. Good Times!!!!!

I give thanks to You Tube..Technology (like many things) is a double edge blade. Cutting one way and slashing the other. I lived Dead shows, many smiles. To listen to this show years later is a blessing to me. We are born to die, but the life we live touches so many. I started with albums, then tapes, CD's and now video. Allows my life pleasure my parents never had. Time passes and so will I. My soul is deep and filled with joy. I'm Grateful for all their gifts.

I did the pay-per-view on this show! dragged my stereo down to the living room and hooked it up to the cable--bobby's amp-kick.....the air being let out of the balloon when they go from scarlet into bucket...my virgin roomate with his mouth agape and a slack cigarette in his mouth during dew....thanks so much for posting!

Holy Smokes. I have heard this show on cassette. As soon as I saw Summer solstice 90.
I said to myself, no way, the show where Bobbys amp blows up. And then the boys come out, and I heard that unique 1 time amp crackle yesssss, this is it. One of the smokinest shows period. I'm(Wes) on my wifes phone, mine broke, and inherited this one 😂that's why I sound so like I am.

Dennis Campbell I got that pay per view. I still have it on a VHS tape. The version of Box of Rain Still makes me cry. There’s true meaning to that song. Every one knows what it’s about. Any one who’s lost a parent knows. It hits home here. God Bless Phil Lesh.

I was at the 6/19th 89 show went down with some buddys from the Uss Pyro yes I was a lost sailor,and had to see my band,parts of the show were a blur but danced alot and nowdays I hang out with the wharfrats and have a cool portorit of Jerry tattoed on my left arm :} keep our culture alive 4-ever :} Smitty

My first West Coast show during move to SF. Unforgettable. Was to meet up with friend from city and ran smack into him just wandering around during intermission. (pre-cell phone era) Met many great new folks. Miracles abounded. Great to re-live this. Shoreline rocked! Thanks for posting!

Safe to say that a typical Dead fan has interests beyond self determination. Great show, this, enjoy.

Missed this show but I saw 20 + @ the Dump subsequent , most shows began at 7 pm and this was the longest day of the year. You can almost hear a pin drop when Jerry begins Morning Dew , which brings me to tears every time I listen to it
I'm LOVIN' the videography! The best I've seen, and it really gives you the feeling of what it was like to be at a late-80s GD concert. It's a wonderful and friendly feeling.
First show was '87. There's definitely *nothing* like an 80s Dead show!

Row Jimmy (one of my top favs Dead songs) is 1000x better with Brents backing vocals. The gritty depth he adds to the backing vocals on all tracks makes the 80s Dead sound so soulful.
