    I know this is an old video, but super helpful for my 40 year old HR215. The tip to tension the spring to get it to stay on the white hub is gold.
    My rope wouldn't pull back in all the way. Maybe the spring is weak. So regardless of the advice to wind the spring no more than 3.5 turns I gave it one more... 4.5 turns and now the rope winds back nicely! Worse case, the spring breaks and I'm buying and installing a new one... practice makes perfect! Lol.

    When linking the inner spring end to the rope pulley slot, get the spring loop close to the centre spindle and when the pulley is offered onto the spindle and turned clockwise the pulley slot will pick up the spring loop

    Thanks for the help! ironic you tell people correctly to wear eye protection, but don't have anything on yourself. You can wind it up all the way, which will give it a good tension on the rope. I would put the cap on the spring before putting the rope on. Put a dab of bearing grease on the spring before closing it up, since that will last longer than a squirt of WD40. I made the mistake of winding my spring on the wrong way, so have to do it over now.

    When i pull the rope the metal plate Just spins with it without poping the thing that's pops out on the side.. and if i put a little tension on the plate than its works fine but if a tighten the bolt Just slightly then the rope wont come out to the tension.

    At 7:30 in your video it is not clear to me how that spring lines up. Is one side of spring on each side of cylinder shaped tab? Or what? I can't tightened top part all the way so rope doesn't retract if I tighten it. But I put retracting device on mower and it doesn't engage the engine.

  • @ShainAndrews

    Don't have to get it quite that hot to anneal it enough to bend without breaking. After bending, if you heat it again and let it cool it relieves the stress from bending and should be less prone to breaking again. The hardness is the actually what causes them to break in use, and when trying to bend without annealing. If a guy wants to return the hardness just quench it instead of allowing to air cool.

  • @Georgetadams1

    Thankyou so much! My tab hasn't been coming out easily when I pull the starter, I have to fling it out and catch the cylinder (if that makes sense) I've now realised when seeing this video that my coil is wound nearly enough!

    When I pull on the cord, it keeps spinning but not getting the mower to start. Now I was informed that it was probably a broken pin. I know nothing about engines but I am trying to learn. I do not have a parts manual because i bought the mower used.

    Could have just dipped the red hot end of the starter spring in some water or oil real quick and re-hardened the steel. There will be a soft spot still where the red hot steel meets the not red hot, but at least it will be in a spot that doesn't take as much strain as the hook

  • @DougHinVA
    @DougHinVA 5 років тому +2

    I was given one by a fellow who died and it has always started after 10 years I owned it. But the starter rope does not retract all the way in. I will see whether the vid helps me resolve the problem. Mine will start, but a foot of rope remains outside the housing and whatever spring pulls the rope back in may have some problem... Watched the first 3 minutes and the guy does not impress me as knowing much about this...

  • @adamcolbertmusic
    @adamcolbertmusic 2 роки тому

    4:13 Can you regain hardness by dunking the hot steel into ice water and temper it? 🤷‍♂ I'm sure tempering is more complex than that, but it's worth a shot!

    • @adamcolbertmusic
      @adamcolbertmusic 2 роки тому

      That would be an interesting video, though. Take two pieces of spring steel and heat them up red hot. Then dunk one into ice water and let the other air cool as a "control group". Then subject each to stress and see if the tempered piece is stronger.

    Ur a good guy but I've never done this before. Too fast, too far away. Ur throwing stuff around. I can't see what notch you're trying to slip that string into I don't know which way you want me to turn it in relation to which way it's supposed to me. You forgot to tell me that 1 of the screws is a reverse thread or if he did you set it so fast I missed it sorry but too fast for me you must be from Pennsylvania because I can never understand Pennsylvania guys not that you not a good guy, I'm sure you're a good guy just too fast for me.
