super video!!! - Bought my HR216 (a bit bigger version of the 214) in 1987. It is a super work horse. I've used it for some pretty hard mowing of some really tall stuff in the past 30 years. Needed to replace the starter rope and this video saved the day!

Great mower, but fixing the broken rope pull, which I thought would be simple, has been a nightmare. The damn spring won't catch on the inner housing and I can't figure out why.
Yes, it is a great mower. I had one for 20 years. I have a newer model now, and I need to retention the spring. I hope it works the same. Good video. I learned a lot about the starter.
I also have an HR215 which was purchased by my parents in about 1991 or 92. I've been using it at my own house since 2006, and this year was the first trouble I've had with it. It quit running, and after cleaning the carburetor it runs like new once again. But I also have a similar issue with the starter cord not winding all the way back up. Also the "pawls" that actually spin the flywheel are a little different on mine, hopefully I can get it fixed up thanks to this video. :)
picked up my Honda 215 Harmony mower today from the repair shop, I'm not paying $585 to fix it! ironically I stopped at a garage sale today and there sitting is a Honda 214 exactly like the one in your video! I bought it for $10! well got it home and what happens...the starter pull rope breaks! so I Google a UA-cam fix and THERE YOU ARE with a Honda 214! YIPPY! Tomorrow I'll get some rope and follow your video!! how timely! THANKS!!
Just replaced the rope on my 214, but wasn't sure how to re-tension the spring - now I know. My HRA214 is old, worn out, but it still starts with the 2nd pull when cold, 1st pull when warm. Great video, thanks.

I had a 214 a couple years ago and i mowed tall thick dirty dusty grass and fields with it all summer long! It finally got so dirty and filthy that it wouldnt start anymore and I sold it for $25 It was an amazing mower and I made lots of money with it!
I just had a hrx217hxa given to me I changed the starter rope and did an oil change and washed it cleaned it up and sharpened the blades will be replacing the air filter and spark plug and lastly if none of that solves the problem then do a carburetor adjustment
doublewide6 You mean you don't take the starter completely apart and have the spring go flying across the shop, just to replace the rope? I get a kick out of these "UA-cam Experts" who strip the damn starter apart just to replace a rope. The 12 series Briggs engines on mowers, I don't even remove the blower housing/starter to replace the rope. I just have to remove the spark plug, secure the bail, remove the old rope and wind the starter up with 2 small screw drivers. When tight, back off until pulley hole and rope guide line up, install rope with grip, remove screwdrivers and let starter suck in the new rope. Saves about 15 to 20 minutes. More if you're an idiot. Now that I'm retired, I'm free to reveal my secrets I've learned over the past 41 years. Good video, sir.
great video i was just thinking duct tape the new cord to the old cord then pull the old out and it will feed the new one thru and save some time. just a suggestion. thanks for the great video
Yeah, run over to your Home Improvement store and buy a bag of braided rope the same diameter for 3-4 bucks(enough for 5 machines). Throw it in and you're good to go. Not sure what to tell you on the wheel as I've never had an issue with them, unless they gave you the wrong part??

Thanks DOUBLEWIDE6, good video. Have the HRA214, as you say great mower. Unfortunately, my clamp slipped and I lost all tension on the spring! Now I cannot get the spring to initially grip the center shaft of the pully without the spring always slipping loose and not gripping the pully. Is there any trick to hold the spring to the pulley shaft to initially get some tension on the spring? Thanks!
I disassembled one of those rewind starters to clean it but it still squeaked and the rope sometimes would not rewind and the pulley squeaked so I put Stihl gearbox grease under the plate that attaches with a bolt. Is that the right kind of lubricant to use?

what does it mean when the rope is hard to pull/won't come out more than a foot? it is a Honda but not same model as yours, just says Honda. also, I turned it over and pulled all dried grass out from underneath then tried to start it; the rope came out a bit more easily (still hard to pull though) but did not go back in. could you tell me what is this from, means what as a symptom? thx~ I really like your video
You could have done with bolting the starter back on to leave the pull cord on the right hand side of the petrol filler cap. Okay if you are left handed I suppose but looks a bit odd to have it on the left side. But these mowers are like the cars - they go forever.
