Hello. My name is Maurice and I just became aware of your channel as I was looking for some kind of hope for breaking into tech. I'm 54 years old and currently working in a warehouse environment and it's very taxing on my physical body as well as my spirit. I'm trying to learn all the fundamentals as I'm studying for CompTia's IT fundamentals test (I heard that Course Careers may be a better option but I really want to finish what I started so I may just do Course Careers after) and hopefully break into tech in a helpdesk position and build from there, but it seems that I have awful timing as I'm hearing that the tech Industry is struggling right now. I don't know how much longer I can endure the warehouse environment and I need to transition out. If I were to get a helpdesk position making 50k annually to start, I would be satisfied. Is there any hope for me at my age in this market for this to happen? Any advice I would greatly appreciate. Thank you for you time..and apologies for the long text😅

You forgot another reason : UA-camrs selling a hyped up dream of going into tech with the assumption of high pay and flexibility. Combine that with people that have a lazy entitled mindset, and the tech industry is now flooded with people who shouldn't even be in it and are just faking it for the paycheck.
I also bet that a LOT of the people currently complaining that there are no opportunities out there, are the same people expecting a 6 figure salary right off the bat and don't want to lower their expectations cause they want the life of the IT people that have been in this for decades.

Opportunities are there, unfortunately these job postings are not entry-level friendly for people just trying to get into the industry. It also doesn’t help when employers don’t want to offer any training, not to mention the curriculum you learn through said certification doesn’t even come close to teaching what the jobs are asking for. Breaking into the tech industry is a complete shit show, especially today. Even people with years of experience are struggling their butts off to get hired after a layoff.

    • @theoneders2056
      @theoneders2056 2 місяці тому +6

@@SkyMonkey42 yeah that's definitely a factor, another factor that we don't know about, is each person's own personality and how their soft skills are. Most people think that just because they got a piece of paper cert or degree, that it immediately entitles them to the job, and then they end up saying "there are no jobs out there". Many factors come into play and it's difficult to pin point and everyone's scenario is different.

Tech job market sucks because of offshoring. Companies are laying of Americans and hiring overseas. Then add in the huge number of influencers telling folks to hash tag learn to code and you have more workers joining a shrinking job market. Last companies I have worked for do this now for new projects: hire a couple onshore architects, a couple onshore staff devs, and all the mid, junior, and senior devs are cheap offshore.

I waited so long to go back to college. At 28 I was interested in pursuing a career in tech and was pushing to work towards a MIS degree. After careful consideration I am now working to get my A.S. in HVAC and move towards the trades. I have worked in retail my whole 20s and deciding to retire and change industries completely. In the world we live in now a college degree guarantees nothing and I have to be able to provide for myself and my family for years to come. Hopefully the trades will teach me a lot, offer a competitive salary with a lot of opportunities. Thank you for all the advice on tech and wishing you all the best!

@@lincolnloggedon i know people without college degrees working in tech, nowadays employers are looking past the college scam and looking more at the type of soft skills and desire to learn you have. I'm not saying college is 100% useless, but this whole idea that one MUST go to college is so outdated. I am self employed(not in tech) with only one year in tech/trade school and I average between $50-$250 an hr depending on the level of specialty work I do. Reason I'm looking into stepping back from that and going into IT is because working a labor intensive trade will wreck your body, so what's the point if later on you're gonna have all kinds of problems with your joints etc. I'd rather go back to earning money using my mind more and being more comfortable in that regard.
HVAC can bring some good $ though. I know guys that charge $250 just to do a maintenance cleaning on an unit that only takes them 45 minutes to do.
I also know a guy in Cyber security who makes $165k without any college degree . Just experience, and he also has ADHD, so learning new things has always been challenging to him yet there he is, working from home making good money for the type of area he lives in.

Especially when I'm watching people trained with break in and some excel since then 22. Networking and mentorship will be two of the biggest keys to always breaking through a stagnant job market. The mentorship will give you guidance and skill acquisition. You will understand the mind of the role through an experienced professional and how to market your skills towards that role. A mentor keeps upskilling, skill utilization and strategy at the forefront. Networking keeps you connected to the right people for the right time. I'm slowly starting to transition into real estate but it's just gonna get harder since I"m about to get married, it'll be rough to take risks.

Question: I was under the belief for years that tech was shifting towards remote work. I hear people saying "you just want to be lazy" already, but hear me out: I have multiple sclerosis and have a damn tough time driving in urban settings where most tech is located. I got my first job in a rather urban area when I started, as I had not yet been diagnosed with the MS, but now, years later, I got laid off, and now I DO have the multiple sclerosis. Moving would be, for that and other reasons, not preferable, but I've applied to nearly 500 remote listings on LinkedIn over the past six months with literally zero positive reward for my efforts. What do people like me do? What recourse do I even have? I know MS is technically a disability, so I feel like there has to be SOMETHING I can turn to, but I feel at the end of my rope more days than not anymore.

This man is almost on point, but there is a different thing people must understand. The tech job market doesn't suck; what really happened is that companies began filtering out people who lack talent and got in for other reasons. For example, I’ve been building algorithms since I was 13 years old, and I have a master's degree and 15 years of experience. I can solve problems and build products. There are tons of jobs available, and I’m pretty sure I could get any of them if I applied today. But it will be impossible to get a tech job for someone who doesn’t have the specific talent to actuallt build tech or problem-solving skills.

that's not my experience - i've been a practising PMP Project manager for 15+ years and have been benched since the start of the year - i have 35 years experience in IT and applied for hundreds of jobs that were good matches for my skillset/CV and only had one interview for a very low paid job which i failed to land - my PMP is up for renewal and i probably won't bother to renew if it costs me anything as i cannot afford it right now.

this is the reason for the lack of IT jobs in the UK: a) successive UK governments since 2000 have been handing out work visas to immigrants like candy - they kept saying that there was an IT skills shortage in the UK but what they meant was that there was a low cost IT skills shortage that would benefit their mates/donors such as Rishi Sunak's (ex UK prime minister) wife's company INFOSYS. b) offshoring/outsourcing to reduce costs. c) Cloud services d) a tax legislation called IR35.

Some money is moving into commercial real estate; I don't feel the economy is about to boom, but what I think is happening is the rich people have decided that this is somewhat the bottom of the economy, so they're willing to invest knowing this is as good of a deal as they're going to get. I was getting two or three contracts a month for a while. Now I have like seven or eight contracts for the upcoming months. I will be working everyday probably going to two sites in one day sometimes

I see you know your stuff because you're experienced. But I just turned 50 this year and maybe I am wrong? But age plays a HUGE factor in why most employers wouldn't hire someone of my age range within the tech industry. I started applying once the doors slammed shut and everyone stopped hiring new junior Devs around 2023 last year. I stopped applying 2 months ago because I didn't see no results and I applied to many jobs. I stopped applying around 2 months ago. But I still program but as a hobby and I am focused on learning different skills.
Am I wrong? But do most companies even though they don't admit it or speak about it openly. They do age discriminate and tend to hire those in their 20's and 30's, am I correct?

    • @ElevateToTheUnknown
