HLG 550 RED v2 VS Mars TS-3000 - LED Grow Light Comparison

- *MARS reached out to me and said:*
In order to make their LED chips last longer, they run them with less electricity. Instead, they use more chips (over 1200).
***********
Both are big LED Grow Lights ... enough for a 5x5 ft area (1.5 x 1.5 meter).
Both are popular best sellers.
But one costs twice as much, so this result is interesting.
tl;dr
The Mars costs about half but the HLG makes more light.

Thanks for the honest review , one thing we want to make a clarification is that the lifespan won’t be less than Samsung is that we use over 1200 pcs of the chips on the board, we use less amps(nearly half of which the Samsung chips uses) to drive each chip so that each chip is less than 0.5w, this will ensure each chip at lower wattage pressure and gain longer lifespan .:)
ya hlg if there running over 52% that junction will heat, and leds will hit there L90 so much faster, and at $1800 ya want 5 years or over, and hlg really going after anyone using word quantium board
@@magnumopus9631 It’s certainly very hard to keep them same in a different price.Objectively, the price-performance ratio refers to a product's ability to deliver performance is more higher.
Mars Hydro got a tsl2000 for Christmas along with a 4x2 tent.never grew indoors but,the results speak for its self.again I’ve never grown indoors before Aloha🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
@@melefarmer1127 Great to hear that, thanks for your favor~
@Mars Hydro what you recommend for 2-4 plants in a 4x4 space beginner not looking to go all out right now best bang for the buck need for seedling to harvest
Quality parts go along way. Never cheap out on lights, they are the core of your garden.
You can get a kingbrite at a1/3 less in price. Same as hlg just China's knockoff🤷🏻♂️
@@lancoschino731 i got an HLG scorpion diablo and currently bought a geekbeast monsterboard 720w. Was suppose to get the kingbrite but price is about the same with delivery
make a video comparing the HLG and the Spiderfarmer! :)
Just purchased the Mars TS-3000. Love them. Full Spectrum lighting. My plants love these lights. In bloom now.
As always another great video !! Thanks!! I like that you make sure everyone can understand the formulas you used to get your results !! Was looking at the Mars TS 3000 but since watching this video I think my decision has been swayed from your comparisons and I think the HLG is a much better light !! Cheers and Happy Growing !! ( from freezing cold Nova Scotia )
You know what I really like the way you have recorded the information for us. Big big thumbs up from me. Thanks for this video mate I really appreciate it.
👍
Your very welcome lol geezer is a sausage
Thanks.... I have a TS 3000. I love it!!!! For the money i'll buy two.
I’ve got the Mars TSL2000. Definitely quality quirks, most annoying of which (IMO) was the the reflector being bent inwards to the point it was actually blocking the outer diodes. This wasn’t transport damage. Just poor tin smithing. Had to cut the tin and bend out to make use of the outer diodes, not something you want to do to a new fixture. Having said all that... still wouldn’t pay twice the price for 20% more light. The Mars TSL made some really nice buds despite its quirks.
Just started using my hlg 650’s and think they are better built with better quality components than Iv seen in other fixtures. Sleek looking, great performing piece of equipment. Haven’t had them long enough to harvest anything yet but looking good so far
Great analysis & great video.
Thanks
@growmau5 Jesus Christ we fuckin miss you.........hope you are doing well, and I hope your return is akin to a nuclear explosion as opposed to an led turning on....until then......enjoy.
You should do more videos like that
We do miss you man...i need to hear that voice again.. and omg the production quality 😍 nostalgia... 😢
Awesome side by side. I saved a couple hundred dollars by building my own HLG 550. I simply bought each component (driver, heatsink, boards, etc) separately and wired everything myself. This is an awesome way to go if you can’t afford the cost upfront. Just buy a piece at a time until you have an amazing light!
Good idea. Its very much possible to build a HLG light, there is nothing proprietary on them
Absolutely buddy have a look at vividled all the kits and more including mixed board configurations
μmol·J-¹ and initital outlay are the two metrics I keep a close eye on, as well as spectrum. HLG has higher μmol·J-¹ (~2.6) vs ~2.3 for the Mars range. Mars is less than half the the initial outlay.
An indoor grow, say 5 months with 2 months of lights on/off 18/6 and 3 months of 12/12, is 2160 hrs total. at 14c per watt for electricity, that's $302.4.
Then add the cost of the equipment, $849 for the HLG550v2Rspec and $440 for the Mars Hydro TS3000.
So the cost of the first grow is $1152 for HLG and $743 for the Mars Hydro, A $409 difference.
The difference in μmol·J-¹ (efficiency/efficacy) is ~10-15% (HLG ~2.6, Mars Hydro ~2.3). One is paying A LOT in initial outlay for that small increase in efficiency/efficacy & the Made in America mantra.
Monied individuals, looking for max efficiency, made in america, style, brand, go for the HLG. Everyone else should go for the Mars Hydro's as they're much better bang for buck for over a 2 year period, imv.
I have similar ongoing tests going on with my sponsored HLG135 V2 Rspec and my sponsored Mars Hydro TS 600 on my channel.
14c per kilowatt hour, not per watt. The same electricity cost also cant be used for both units because they draw different power from the wall. The HLG still comes out costing twice as much for a very small increase in μmol/J, though.
Mars Hydro - 425 watt - 0.14/kWh
18 hours a day for 3 months
32.6/month, 97.8 total
12 hours a day for 2 months
21.73/month, 43.46 total
Total cost of electricity to grow with Mars - 141.26
Add the equipment cost of 440
Total - 581.26
HLG - 478 watt - 0.14/kWh
18 hours a day for 3 months
36.66/month, 110 total
12 hours a day for 2 months
24.44/month, 48.88 total
Total cost of electricity to grow with HLG - 158.88
Add the equipment cost of 849
Total - 1007.88
You forgot to account for dumping the mars hydro in the trash in 2-3 years because it's 60% dead.
@@47refugee I can't forget something I've not experienced.
i like that you included a tl;dw in your description. i'm going to watch the video anyway
Great comparison for me when thinking about another light! Thanks for the video. I will say that I have 2 HLG lights. 2 panel and 3 panel. Both of them have exceeded my expectations.
I just got the black bird 600 watts.can you tell me what hight and watts during veg
Hey man new grower here I have just started switching over to Led great comparison really let’s people with less tools really see what they are getting thanks a lot
Thank you sir. I must inform you shortly after you made this I purchased this Mars hydro model exactly only the pricing increased and the Mars hydro is actually equipped with Samsung so I think you did a good thing
Thank you
The only US labor on an HLG is loading the Japanese LED board stuffers and putting quantum boards into a shipping. box. The LEDs and
and PC board are all made overseas. The good news is the shipping box is made in the USA !
I love seeing Mars Hydro showing up to defend there pruduct at the slightest criticism.
I made my comment because, Mars Hydro along with HLG have supplied a light to Home Grow Engineering for a side by side review. When the reviewer criticized their light, Mars Hydro jumped straight in and told him he was wrong. I am pretty sure HLG were not totally satisfied but, they have the confidence in there product not to show up and moan.
Mars hydro is run by chinese bots. They spammed me with 20 emails even though i grow outdoor
@@thegrowsausage6605 They always do that with sponsored videos. And just so you know, they pick the best quality batch of lights for youtubers. With normal customers they sometimes send the wrong lights, or faulty lights.. Mars invested in marketing more than the quality. Whenever you search for 'best lights' you get Mars, and it's a paid advertisement.. Usually the best brands are not advertised as much. You know those TV shop commercials that last for hours? Like Top-Shop for example.. Everything is cheap in there, and they have the most ads..
Way to gothis is the first time we've seen a comparison from Mars to the hlg it really intrigued us on what the lights can and can't do and thank you for doing the heat test as well that really means a lot.👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Mars hydro amazing grow lights great Quality as well
Migro's degredation test is due to the acrylic lens clouding over time!
Mars hydro all the way. I have 3 Ts1000s. Working great
what do you get for yield per plant with the mars hydro?
@@frankienumerosi1 6oz roughly I'd say... (1 x TS1000)

Good information! Lots of haters out there...... You get what you pay for with these ALWAYS! I’ve owned a couple older model Mars but not the HLG. Costs are driven by material and from what I have seen here, one company cheaps out on their build. I’ll stick with my DIY COB LEDS, until they die.....
HLG is just the best. Plain and simple! Better warranty. Better customer service, USA made!! 💪
From my understanding the Mars is a dimmable light also. I would have liked to see the comparison with the Mars turned up as the HLG was.
It was at full power lol

This guy perplexes me.

Yet he talks in Fahrenheit!?
He doesn't have much of a Germanic accent... Perhaps partially deaf?

@@jamess1787 you're close. Luckily I'm not deaf. I'm german, live in AU & US for 14 years (thus lost some of the accent) and talk in Fahrenheit for my US audience.
@@HomeGrowEngineering thanks for correcting me. =). (And satisfying my curiosity!!) Obviously you are very unique with your channel and back history, I'm not sure I know too many young Germans that moved abroad and retained some of the accent. (Seems like it's 0 or 100, but nothing in between).
Much appreciated, I love the videos, you do a superb job!

I do have the TW 2000 Mars as well which is a fall light in my Greenhouse to finish up the flower I get very good results from that as well
Very good analysis and breakdown of each unit thanks for your honesty . subbed
thanks!
The Mars Hydro at full blast is 625 watts. You can actually dim the light up and down on Mars Hydro. Out the box it is setup at 3/4 of the full potential.
Mars told me they don't recommend turning it up all the way.
Because they FAIL at max power. They fail at 3/4 power too, just takes a bit longer.
The drivers are removable on the TS 3000, I put mine outside the tent to reduce the heat
True. They come with an extra long cable to do that.
Thank you for the review man.. i was in between of these two light and now i know made the right decision getting quantum board that has lm301b samsung diode. i was gonna upgrade the rest of my COBS with quantum board so i was thinking about MARS, but now i will stick with HLG products. hell, these light made my COBs looks like a joke with 100watts drawing power.
Hey man you're my favorite marijuana grow channel !
I love you no bullshit delivery and how u get straight to the point all with understated comedy here and there in some videos.
Please if u can , make a a video on an easy way to clone and how to identify what to part of the plant to cut for cloning and how to go about growing that.
Keep up the good work.
Are the HLG's also able to easily put the drivers outside the grow? Love that about the mars.
man that dimmer is so bad on the HLG. and WTF on the hooks? just dont even include them if they cant hold up an $850 light!
HLG hardware is top quality! I hung their lights with what came in the box. Also no need for driver outside the grow room. 2 HLGs in 4x8 tent Temps stay at 80 when room temperature is 70. Get both in hand and ull notice mars build quality is lagging far behind
I know this is a year old, but the solution for the dimmer box is to unscrew the box to open it. You should be able to put a knot in the cord so that it no longer pulls out when you close it back up. I put together one of the QB Kits and it is exactly the same box. That is what I did to solve that problem. Honestly it's an old school solution.
AH MY EYES! lol. Im tired and feel like im high (sleep deprived).... Hilarious
Thanks for this nice review. In my opinion the HLG is the better light. The LEDs from HLG are based on flip chip technology. This means lifetimes >15.000h. While the mars is using the very cheap standard midpower packages. For sure the efficacy is good too, but degradation will be much faster.
I think this is the main thing everyone seems to forget. They all look at immediate numbers, but very few of them actually review this light after a year or two.
What good is a 200€ light with high numbers that only lasts few months or less than a year? Better to buy a 400€ light that will last 2-3 years.
The problem with Mars, Spider and other cheaper lights is that you have a 50-50% chance of getting a reliable light, and with questionable customer service and warranty.
Thanks for the research on lights ✌💨💨
I just bought the Mars TSW2000 with a 3´x3´ tent, I hope a made a good choice.
That'll work.
@@HomeGrowEngineering For less than a year.

Like Consumer Reports for grow panels. Great vid and info. Thanks!!
I have looking for this type of video. Thanks!
I bought DIY components from HLG for my first light. for my 2nd fixture I bought components directly from China and built an identical fixture for 1/4 the price.
Nice work. You can really get them all there. Recently I even found the big red heat sink: www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Kingbrite-HLG-550-red-Aluminum-Heatsink_62153551276.html
Sick!!
I bought 2 ts 600 to add to 5 by 5 grow tent with2 1000 watt blurple lights. 4 lights for 4 plants works great. Can move each light to adjust for each plants growth. All plants grew great and did not notice any difference in ants under the 600 watt Mars or the 1000 watt blurple lights. 4 smaller lights give better coverage than one big one in my opinion. I would use 4 Mars 600 lights if I was starting a grow.75$ Canadian each on Amazon.
Compare the Spider Farmer light that also uses a Meanwell drivers and Samsung diodes. I think you might be surprised in the output and efficacy of the much less expensive light compared to the HLG. I think they’re both around 2.7 umol’s per watt and the Spider Farmer runs a bit cooler than the other two lights you just compared. Thanks and nice informative video!
Very High quality video upload.. keep up the great work ✌🏾✌🏻🇬🇧
Thank you
Id love to see this with the spider farmer sf4000
same vs the hlg
I personally UPGRADED to the Spider Farmer Lights 2 - sf4000's and 2 sf2000's. I was running last year's top of the line lights from Mars Hydro and 2 additional lights from Cali Gro. Both lights are full spectrum. but that's where the comparison ends. The new Spider Farmer lights are PHENOMENAL! So much so I don't even need to run them at full power. I have the 2 sf4000's in my main flower area it is a 20' x 7' (140sq ft) area and these two lights are more than ample to crank out some to the largest harvests that I have had in a long time. My last harvest vs my lights from the other manufactures came in at a little over 40% greater in volume/mass. So, with less power and fewer lights (Had 4 x 1700 watt full spectrum LED's) in the flower room, I achieved a superior harvest with the NEW Spider Farmer Lights. Yes, I did an exact Genetics comparison to be sure. For my money, I'll never use anything but the Spider Farmer Lights. The proof is in the pudding. **I am not being paid or compensated in any way for my opinion by Spider Farmer.
Dude awesome, do Kingbrite vs HLG or Chilled next.
I have the HLG550 it is sweet man!
Growers choice E680 vs HLG 550 at 1ft hieght please.
They are about $100 cheaper. The tests I've seen of the E680 were at 2ft. They use Samsung leds i think.
Hello there!!! In order to be on par with what the companies intend, you should really make a 1 m2 case(square) with reflective material as the companies suggest anyway for the grower to always use this material and moreover, this is how they make their own measurements. The Migro channel that you mention in your video does it like that. You are both honest people and that's what counts!!! Please also make spectrum measurements(if you can afford a spectral meter). Thanks!
Elgriego thanks. yes, i suppose i could test in a grow tent. My friend has a spectral meter. Maybe he lets me borrow it.
@@HomeGrowEngineering No worries mate!!I am only saying it as the companies produce compeltely different results and in order to really test them against your own, you should try to replicate the conditions so we know who is over inflating their results and who is not. You can either use your grow tent or buy some carton board and some Mylar(they are very cheap) and you can dress the carton box with it and create your own space like Shane from Migro did. Keep doing a good and honest job. :)
HLG 550 rspec is great. American made, works great. Less than 800$ and last. I haven't turned mine off in a year. Still storing and I got two more years or warranty. Also I chose to spend more than a china made one because I don't wanna burn down my hose that 800g
Very clear and concise
Hi , great video as usual . Have you got any video on the mars hydro ts1000? Is it suitable for a 60x60x140 cm tent ? Thanks

I've got the sf1000 well I've got 2 of then and I've seen the sf4000 and it's amazing kick the arse out of hlg but very similar
I'm finishing up my first grow with the SF4000. So far I like it but the results aren't in yet so I'm reserving judgement. There is a light on Amazon with the same diodes and drivers as the SF for $343. I think I'll try that one next, or this Mars Hydro 3000
SF has more quality parts in comparison to Mars, also never heard of diodes going out on the SF as of yet. Time will tell.

I will be upgradimg my led lights soon too the new HLG light. It'll be 2.9 umol 😈.

Great video! I recently got a 240W Meijiu QB with V3 Samsung chips. I would love to see some analysis on the latest version of their chips. I feel like the board is pretty great, but I haven't seen any test results, plus it is my first grow so I have no basis for comparison. I believe I read that they're supposed to be 7-10% more efficient than V2, but I think that's a claim by Samsung.
Alex Gerlock you have the one with the lm301h ?
v2 and v3 is BS marketing from meijiu. Samsung doesn't make a v3 LED. 301b and 301h are the same thing.
How much is your tomato tent? I can't see price duo to the tent being out of stock but wanna know the price if I should buy it next restock
Last I saw was $700+ used to be like $500+
Whats better, building a DIY cob kit or buy the mars hydro?? Im in a dilemma
Will you do a video on the HLG 650R? very strong light.
Awesome comprehensive testing 👏🍁🇬🇧
HLG overdrives their chips as well, which leads to premature failure.
Mars under-drives theirs. They instead use more chips. To make them last longer. I didn't know that before the video.
HLG quantum boards have 18 chips in parallel on a 2100ma driver. That’s 116ma per chip , these Samsung’s can handle over 200ma each. So how is that over driving the chips? Poor thermal management, yeah I can agree with that, HLG550s can cook eggs on top. Over driving chips, no.
Yup
Geeklight sell good quality lights
Great video, but I can’t justify spending $400 more. I’d need to see final harvest weight for both.
whatup Brotha! yea same
Great video fam would luv to see you do a test on the optic slim 600h
Thanks! Super helpful
I bought both lights and used them side by side for a month. HLG is twice as expensive with no discernible difference in plant growth. I proceeded to purchase 3 more Mars lights. The higher price is just not worth it.
So you would deff go with the mars hydro? How do you think it compares to the spiderfarmer?
@Fish Sandwich why so butt hurt because someone would rather by a Mars for what seems to be his own personal reason.
@Fish Sandwich and what if you dont need to send it in for service and your just making up how long the dios will last lol but i guess we should all listen to you
first off why would you wanna run a led light for over two yrs any way lol oh because you spent 800 on one light, but hey if you wanna spend that type of cash go ahead your the man. its a damn shame its other lights on the market using the same drivers and diodes and still cost less then that shit. but your the genius get the overpriced one im a stick with the budget brand

Both companies seem to try and squeeze out the most bucks out of their product.
I can pretty much go to china and buy the same crap for much cheaper and very often the built quality is the same or better.

@@allenlyon7202 70 inches? Maybe you mean centimeters? 70 inches is almost 180cm or 6 feet, which is the usual tent height from top to bottom.. Even 70 cm would be too high.. You can lower the light and dim it

@@goonernumone8444 MIGRO did one with the SF1000 but the "efficiency" is based on PPFD measurement with reflective walls that do not look too reflective. In other words, the calculation does not take into account the fact that photons were emitted by the light outside of his measuring area and not reflected back in. You need to measure the output of the light and not the output per area to measure true efficiency of the light. In real life you would stack up the lights in a room , thus almost using all the photons emitted and not letting them escape the grow area. Learning the units used is so important to truly understand. I'm not saying he lost 25% efficiency all in the walls but still, the value seems low.
@@goonernumone8444 It's 2.07 because they run it past what it's supposed to be run at. Look at their chart. You also have to keep in mind of the electricity lost to the driver powering the LEDs. That's an important variable.

Great video 👍I'll be following...My personal preference is quality and warranty.
I have had both of these lights running for over 1 year. The HLG lights are better. The yield is probably 20% better for the HLG light. The Mars light is very good but the HLG lights are commercial grade.
Any thoughts on the TS600w as that's what I bought and have just started a very small grow just 2 plants as I'm very limited to space,
It's a good unit.
Wow you had me cracking up. Good video.
nice video. Easy to watch
Mars for veg hlg for bloom thanks bro
Thank you for sharing
Simple as that
Do the sf4000 VS the same hlg u just used.
Did you crank the HLG dimmer to max?
Wouldn't it be more accurate to take a screw driver to the TS-3000 driver to crank it to max as well?
I did crank the HLG to the max.
Mars said they don't recommend cranking their light further up because the driver could get damaged.
@@HomeGrowEngineering The same should be true about the HLG unless the maximum is capped low but that seems slightly disadvantageous. I'd think it more likely that HLG is just less upfront about wattage draw effecting the lifespan. Would like to see efficiency comparison with the HLG dimmed to the TS-3000 wattage.
@@trent5098 Your comment doesn't make much sense. The dimmers come capped by each manufacturer. if you mess with that, you run the risk of frying the leds, or rendering your fixture a flashing mess. Running the HLG at a lower draw would obviously (if you know how leds work) make it last longer and be even more efficient. Running the Mars at a higher wattage will do the opposite. What is there to not be upfront about? That doesn't even make sense. If you want to run your leds at 425 watts instead of 478 watts, do it, they'll last longer. I mean duh.
