  • Are LED sellers truthful with their efficiency claims? How can you tell? Who's being honest? In this LED grow light video review, I decided to audit 4 popular Amazon vendors (Spider Farmer, Maxsisun, Mars Hydro & ViparSpectra) to see if their lights match the PPE product specs shown on their websites. Which companies are most truthful?
    This review features 6 popular LED grow light models from the "1000" category. Some of them might be ok for a single "medicinal" plant. But these are ideal for home gardeners, growing things like lettuce, microgreens, seedlings & herbs. Three premium models: SF1000, MF1000 & TS1000. Three budget lights: SF1000D, PB1000 & TS600. Which lights are best? I took PPFD readings comparing the light levels. The video shows several other metrics for comparing these grow lights.

    PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS
    ==================
    Although I reviewed & tested 6 LED grow lights, I'm only able to recommend 4 of them: SF1000, PB1000, MF1000 & TS1000. The SF1000D & TS600 are subpar units. Unless you can get them at a super cheap price, you're better off just buying a PB1000.
    • SF1000: Spider Farmer originally released this LED at $140. A year later, they had added a dimmer box & raised the price to $160. It wasn't making any extra light. It just cost more. They originally listed it as PPE 2.7. Then they claimed PPE 2.9. This was false. Their Integrating Sphere test reports show the PPE is only 2.5! It's still very efficient. It also has a higher percentage of Far Red light vs the other LEDs. So I do recommend it. But I would not pay more than $160 for it.
    • SF1000D: Growers might mistake the SF1000D for a SF1000 without the dimmer. But that's not the only difference! It has Samsung LM301D diodes. It doesn't have a branded driver. And so the power factor is low (0.69). The efficacy is much lower. The PPE is only 2 (even though the label said 2.6). At $100 or higher, this light is simply not worth it.
    • PB1000: Maxsisun's budget grow light. A very nice entry level light at a good price. It's nice & clean, similar to how the SF1000 started out. Samsung LM281B+ diodes are less efficient than the SF1000/SF1000D ones. But it has a good driver & more of diodes, allowing them to run at a lower voltage. Thus, the efficacy is 2.1 umol/J & it runs at a true 100W.
    • MF1000: It has more features than the others: Ribbed heat sink, daisy chain power connector & remote control for power & dimming. The reflector hood helps to focus the photons (along with a smaller diode footprint). It doesn't output much more light than the PB1000. But it distributes the light differently (good for non-tent applications). The PPE is slightly higher (2.139 vs 2.077) & it includes a Far Red diode. But it has that premium price too. If you're impressed by the features, then it's worth it.
    • TS600: Mars Hydro didn't want me to review this light. They had NO test report for it. It has false PPE specs on the label (PPE 2.3). It is probably more like 1.8 umol/J. This is based on my PPFD readings compared to the MF1000 (which matches wattage & also has a reflector hood). The TS600 has a poor power factor (0.7). It's not very bright & not as efficient. I don't advise buying it.
    • TS1000: Unlike the other 100W models, this LED is a full 150W. So the output is much higher! I was given an old test report. But my PPFD readings support an efficacy of 2.1 or even 2.2. It would be fair to compare this light to the others, except it costs LESS than the SF1000. And you can dim it too. A good value in that more expensive premium category!

      It seems for this year or recently they upgraded the SF-1000D to have the same diodes as the SF1000. It says on there website as well that it has the LM301B diodes instead of the LM301D diodes.

      Exatly ! So tired of all those partial youtuber and influencer not doing any research and most not knowing what they are talking about. Most get a free light and some get money with it, just to sell us marketing / false data they are reading from their script, in the mean time a lot of sells occurs for untrustworthy brand. Funny how they are barely giving any product to those who knows what they are talking about and will do the research, that's speaks volume. Anyway sorry for my broken english, that was my ted talk.

    The deceit really needs to end. Kinda reminds me of the stereo era in the 90's when all these amplifiers were rated high watts at an ohm spec which the amp could NOT output. Having to spend energy and time to keep others honest is a sad use of human potential.

      You're 2nd to last line plagues me constantly. I have to spend an hour to check your lies and another hour fighting them. No thanks. I have a 1000w (continuous, not peak) Pyramid amp with a hunk of lead in it to make it nice and heavy for boating use. It bumps harder than a pile of Hifonics Zeusses @ 8 ohms. I'll give ya a great deal on it and throw in a Kenwood 999 and a Panasoonics pull-out with corresponding anti-theft purse. Hmu...

      @@Albopepper Great job!!These Grow Lights being sold online usually are declared a higher value than actual ratings since the end users normally do not have enough knowledge to tell the difference and no test equipment to verify.. If you can, you may get some real commercial grade Grow Light fixtures from good scale manufacturers, like my former company, LEDIA Lighting; companies like us only provide OEM/ODM services to USA local brands, including the top tier ones, such as Fluence! These brands have very strict quality requirements, and do FQC inspection for every shipment..If you want to look into this, feel free to contact me though!! Again, good job for this video!!

      😢That is so cool. When I was about 7 me and my mother moved into a house in Waterloo Ohio the upstairs had nothing but clothesline strung from one side of the room to the other three rooms up there I think. Over in the corners were these big bundles of what I thought was corn stalks like I said I'm like seven at the time. My mom was mid 50. Neither of us had any idea until my older brother showed up and we were burning this in a wood stove starting fires using it for kindling. You can walk outside and the whole town smelled like a pot party. Obviously somebody had got a big harvest outdoors that year and that's where they hung it and cured it. True story

    Physicist out of UW Madison here. Also, a growing and testing enthusiast.
    One refinement to your data - PPF doesn't include sub 400nm or >700nm, so the more IR+UV diodes, the lower the PPF and PPE (as you've calculated), though IR contribute even more on an energy basis (requiring less energy per photon (E=hv/lambda)). So the "2.9" data may just include a wider wavelength range, as PPF is an inherently flawed, invalid measurement parameter if IR+UV are included.
    Said another way, a purely IR+UV grow light would have 0 PPF, but would 1 draw power and 2 contribute greatly to plant growth. Awesome video and great work overall, though!
    Update: For anyone optimizing a grow room to run as cheaply as possible, plant growth scales with number of photons, NOT wattage drawn from the wall. It takes nearly twice as much wattage to make a blue photon as a red photon, yet to a plant, they're both the same as far as photosynthesis[1].
    Said another way, a light that puts out more red than blue could have a much lower efficiency but deliver much more usable energy to your plant (red photons carry about 1.8eV whereas blue are ~3.1eV).

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your input! The 2.9 PPE data does not include IR / UV. It was a fabrication. This video update talks more about the PAR range and PPF efficacy vs Photon Flux efficacy: ua-cam.com/video/WmjOSzSF-HI/v-deo.html
      I'm not sure where you get the data showing blue photons require nearly twice as much wattage. This source cites 450nm blue diodes as having an efficacy of 3.5 umol/J while 660nm reds are 4.5 umol/J: _doi.org/10.1038/s41438-020-0283-7__._ Red diodes get a boost, but they're not twice as efficacious.
      When optimizing a grow room to run cheaply, a grower would get the most PAR photons per watt if they simply used Red Diodes. But such diodes are more costly to manufacture so the upfront cost would be higher. More importantly, plants won't grow properly under such a narrow, limited bandwidth. You need to account for photomorphogenesis. Thus, blue LEDs are needed to avoid undesirable morphologies. But the phosphor coated blue diodes also add green light into the spectrum which brings its own inherent advantages like improved canopy penetration.
      Either way, higher efficacy is still crucial. On a watt per watt basis, the higher the PPE, the more PAR photons being emitted which means more growth potential.

    This video was very refreshing!!! I was sick and tired of all these growers giving these great reviews to lights just because the Chinese gave them a “free” light. Give a grower a free light and he will give raving reviews . This industry is so full of lies and deceptions it makes me want to go back to HPS .

    I grabbed a maxsisun mf2000 after watching this. I love the thing. Great buy IMO, so much so that I actually ordered another one last night now that my girls have outgrown their current set up. Last time it arrived a day early and I had it installed in minutes. Hope this helps someone like me... slow, skeptical, suspicious, shopper who reads every review possible if Im spending more than about $100. Some details... my grow room is 4 ft x 4 ft. I plan on using 2 maxsisunmf2000 for 6 medicinal plants. The heat stays within ideal range with the light on. This guys video is very helpful for understanding the info you want to understand when new to purchasing led grow lights. Good Luck!!!

    I thought this was for reef tank lighting.. but I really like your in depth review about these lights. You have a good perspective! You should get a salt water tank and make videos for us all😂😂 choosing between reef tank lights is a big decision that costs anywhere from $500 to $15,000 just in lights! So having a good review like this about all the different lights would be next level!! Great video man!

      I think this is all about just being terrified!! About spending a high amount of money saying they won’t supply me a sample, so he is only checking efficacy,par, like what is he getting at? I get it. But spend some cash don’t be scared get a 1000 watt true led once. I did and u will see results, don’t know about any of these lights he mentions with the scientific “fair” part of photons and all that but he said it!! Price! So if u want a really awesome led grow light spend and just don’t be afraid to spend money on one I have done this grow thing over 20 yrs I did my research of course u have to spend more than $100-$800 bucks bro don’t buy out of country lights either! u don’t need someone to say, o this one compared to this or these lights inflate data or lie you about par and all that. Spend money man you can’t compromise with price. The saying goes u get what you “pay” for don’t ask for a sample light and waste your time read on par, micromoules, per second first just read for your self u will find what works for you.

      But he does know his stuff on lighting for sure the man is amazing with knowledge on a lot of brands don’t get me wrong. Not knocking him just saying don’t be afraid to spend on an led it just drives u half crazy trying to decide which is best but make the switch from halides and street lights u get way better results with led!👍

All these numbers make my eyes sort of water over and it can get confusing. I just want the damn plants to grow and I don‘t want to break the bank to get there, so I really appreciate that you have done the hard work for us. How will I know when it‘s time to get new lights? This is a brilliant video mate. As a reviewer you’ve convinced me to request and thoroughly examine the integrating sphere report. Although I never use manufacturer claims in my reviews this video thoroughly highlights the flaws within the industry. Especially the honesty in the relationship between light manufacturers and buyers.
    I’m not sure why they inflate their results, its not fooling anyone.
    I try to rely solely on my own measurements but the results of an IST would be a great yardstick assuming you can trust the results provided.
    You’ve convinced me to demand these tests before review.
    Fantastic video.

    I think everyone of these lights are at least good and probably can't go wrong with any of them. However, the Maxsisun company has taken engineering, build quality and convenience to a new level. I've owned a few of these brands but honestly, the Maxsisun, especially the MF series, has taken grow lights to the next level. Once you open the box, take it out and examine it, you'll be sold. If this doesn't sell you, the test results are top notch. It just feels so solid and looks so clean like someone really took their time making these.

    Just a great, well-presented video as always. Maybe I can add a couple of additional observations.
    The cheaper Mars lights are made with very shiny aluminum, but it is not anodized. The shine will diminish over time with natural atmospheric corrosion.
    The Maxsisun PB-2000 I bought was the same diodes as my Spider Farmer SF-2000, but it was about a third cheaper. It had about a third less diodes. Wouldn't that mean the diodes are being driven harder and will not last as long (assuming they both run at the same wattage)?

    • @Albopepper
      @Albopepper  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks for watching! I'm not sure. When I look at the current PB-2000 Pro, it uses 700 diodes with LM281B+. But the SF-2000 is 606 diodes with LM301B. So I don't know how that compares to older product revisions.
      Generally, yes more diodes will mean less current running through each. And this can help with both lumen maintenance and also efficacy. But many of these LED systems are using more solid components these days, especially the drivers. So hopefully it will continue to perform well and last a long time for you.

Some got age restricted for no real reason or at least no given reason. I noticed a trend of limited or no ads or age restrictions. It seems anytime you even hint towards drug related things it’s an automatic trigger.Going forward I’ve had to basically avoid even mentioning anything that can be tied back to drug related words. And I believe I found that if you eat anything like a hot pepper and it causes you distress or pain, they can demonetized for that because it’s in the guidelines.
