Mary believed she was going to be carrying the son of God before she became pregnant with Jesus, so she has faith in Jesus fun the beginning, therefore his close proximity to her, being inside her womb, could redeem her from any sin and make her a viable bearer of "God in the flesh".

I find the difference to be like as if God had given Moses the Ark of the OLD Covenant PRE Made, ex nihilo, by His own hand, delivered by angels, as apposed to the synergistic collaboration between God and Israel’s finest craftsmen, as scripture actually describes. But, no, Orthodox believe her purification into the Ark of the NEW Covenant was a similar synergistic process.
Regardless, your doctrine is an avoidable mistake based on a much older innocent mistake by Saint Augustine that he made due to not being able to read Greek and only having a poor early draft of the Vulgate to work with, full of errors. But the cultural effects of his mistake were so pervasive in the west that just doubling down on the error was easier than admitting they had been getting a subtle yet critical aspect of Adam’s Sin slightly off.

Angel Gabriel calls her κεχαριτωμένη in Luke 1:28 Kecharitōmenē. This Greek word has no exact translation in Latin, nor English. It is a conjugation, extension of three words.
χαριτοω (charitoo) "Grace", μένη (mene) (passive participle) and κε (ke) (prefix of χαριτοω which means it is in perfect tense).
The angel is not telling her she is receiving grace (much less "favor" as some translations say) in that particular moment, but that she is (passive participle) made graceful, fully, in past present and future (perfect tense). It's a quality of her being. She is blessed among all women. In vulgar latin translations it was usually translated as gratia plena/full of grace.
This word Kecharitōmenē had never been used in Greek literature before this moment and wouldn't be used again until the V century. The author of Luke coined the term and meant it literally.
Remember that “Grace” is undeserved divine help, gifted for free by God to someone so that person can better respond to His calls. Having such an absolute divine help, in past present and future, implies no sin whatsoever, otherwise it would not have been truly gratia plena.

    • @servus_incognitus
      @servus_incognitus 6 місяців тому +55

Perfectly stated. If one takes the revealed words of the scripture to their fullest and absolute understanding, one cannot escape it.
For if she is FULL of Grace, that can only mean there is no Grace that is lacking in her. And also take into account that she is deemed "Blessed among women". That is, she is singular among all women in history, and particularly among the biblical women in which the context lies.
That means that she is superior in Grace, her Grace is fuller, than that given to Elizabeth, or Ruth, or Sarah, or Judith... And yes, even higher than the Grace bestowed on Eve, for she alone is blessed among all of them, even Eve.
How then, could Eve receive the Grace of being made without sin, but not her, the Most Holy Mother of God, who is FULL of Grace and Blessed amongst all Women? How could she, the New Eden, the New Ark of the Covenant, the New Holy of Holies, the Palace of Honour where the Alliance between men and God was accomplished, receive a lesser Grace than that of Eve? Untenable!

No she’s not. Mary conceived with Joseph and not only that if the immaculate conception is true then why does the Bible call jesus the son of Joseph? Or that he is “of the seed of David”. God chose Mary and Joseph to lay down and have sex to make jesus. Where Catholics get things twisted is you all believe sex is a sin but it’s not. In the very first book of the Bible the very first commandment of the Bible is “be fruitful and multiply” and a commandment can’t be a sin. Not only that but back in ancient Israelite culture the if a man enters a woman’s womb they are husband and wife according to the scripture. Mary is not to be worshipped for she was called by god to north Jesus Christ. There is only ONE god and he didn’t need Mary or Joseph that’s what HE chose he is the MOST HIGH GOD.

@@miguelfelix599 God chose Mary before time began. If you believe Jesus is God, you could say that Jesus chose the greatest mother ever created, and was concieved without sin as nothing is impossible to God.
      In the old Testament:
Isaiah 7:14 "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Emmanuel." this was written the 8th century before Christ.
The Angel Gabriel was God's ambassador and said to Mary 'Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you." Mary is the favoured one.
On the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word."
Mary is the mother and servant of God and Jesus said to John from the Cross " Son behold your Mother" This has been the teaching of the Catholic Church since the time of Jesus. We honour Mary as the Mother of our Saviour.
      Ave Maria. 🙏

@@declancronin437 All you did was point out one scripture that doesn't have to do anything with the doctrine, everything else is made up. Mary the mother of Jesus was described by God as “highly favored” (Luke 1:28). The phrase highly favored comes from a single Greek word, which essentially means “much grace.” Mary received God’s grace.
The virgin Mary, by God’s grace, recognized that she needed the Savior. The Bible never says that Mary was anyone but an ordinary human whom God chose to use in an extraordinary way. Yes, Mary was a righteous woman and favored (graced) by God (Luke 1:27-28). At the same time, Mary was a sinful human being who needed Jesus Christ as her Savior, just like everyone else (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23; 6:23; 1 John 1:8).
The virgin Mary did not have an “immaculate conception.” The Bible doesn’t suggest Mary’s birth was anything but a normal human birth. Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus (Luke 1:34-38), but she was not a virgin permanently. The idea of the perpetual virginity of Mary is unbiblical. Matthew 1:25, speaking of Joseph, declares, “But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.” The word until clearly indicates that Joseph and Mary did have normal sexual relations after Jesus was born. Mary remained a virgin until the Savior’s birth, but later Joseph and Mary had several children together. Jesus had four half-brothers: James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas (Matthew 13:55). Jesus also had half-sisters, although they are not named or numbered (Matthew 13:55-56). God blessed and graced Mary by giving her several children, which in that culture was accepted as the clearest indication of God’s blessing on a woman.
One time when Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd proclaimed, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed” (Luke 11:27). There was never a better opportunity for Jesus to declare that Mary was indeed worthy of praise and adoration. What was Jesus’ response? “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it” (Luke 11:28). To Jesus, obedience to God’s Word was more important than being the woman who gave birth to the Savior.
Nowhere in Scripture does Jesus or anyone else direct any praise, glory, or adoration toward Mary. Elizabeth, Mary’s relative, praised Mary in Luke 1:42-44, but her praise is based on the blessing of giving birth to the Messiah. It was not based on any inherent glory in Mary. In fact, after this Mary spoke a song of praise to the Lord, extoling His mindfulness to those of humble state and His mercy and faithfulness (Luke 1:46-55).
Many believe that Mary was one of Luke’s sources for the writing of his Gospel (see Luke 1:1-4). Luke records the angel Gabriel visiting Mary and telling her that she would give birth to a son who would be the Savior. Mary was unsure how this could be since she was a virgin. When Gabriel told her that the child would be conceived by the Holy Spirit, Mary answered, "I am the Lord’s servant. . . . May your word to me be fulfilled. Then the angel left her" (Luke 1:38). Mary responded with belief and a willingness to submit to God’s plan. We, too, should have such faith in God and trustingly follow Him.
In describing the events of Jesus’ birth and the response of those who heard the shepherds’ message about Jesus, Luke writes, "But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). When Joseph and Mary presented Jesus at the temple, Simeon recognized that Jesus was the Savior and gave God praise. Joseph and Mary marveled at what Simeon had said. Simeon also told Mary, "Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed" (Luke 2:34-35).
Another time at the temple, when Jesus was twelve, Mary was upset that Jesus had remained behind when His parents had left for Nazareth. They were distressed in looking for Him. When they found Him, still in the temple, He said He must be in His Father’s house (Luke 2:49). Jesus returned to Nazareth with His earthly parents and submitted to them. We are told, again, that Mary "treasured up all these things in her heart" (Luke 2:51). Raising Jesus must have been a perplexing endeavor yet also filled with precious moments, perhaps memories that became more poignant as Mary came to more fully understand who Jesus is. We, too, can treasure in our hearts the knowledge of God and the memories of His activity in our lives.
It was Mary who requested Jesus’ intervention at the wedding of Cana, where He performed His first miracle and turned water into wine. Even though Jesus seemingly rebuffed her at first, Mary instructed the servants to do what He told them. She had faith in Him (John 2:1-11).
Later in Jesus’ public ministry, His family grew concerned. Mark 3:20-21 records, "The crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat. And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, 'He is out of his mind.'" When His family arrived, Jesus proclaimed that it is those who do the will of God who are His family. Jesus’ brothers did not believe in Him prior to the crucifixion, but at least two of them did afterward-James and Jude (Judas), the authors of the New Testament books bearing their names.
Mary did seem to believe in Jesus throughout His life. She was present at the cross when Jesus died (John 19:25), no doubt feeling the “sword” that Simeon had prophesied would pierce her soul. It was there at the cross that Jesus asked John to serve as Mary’s son, and John took Mary into his home (John 19:26-27). Mary was also with the apostles on the day of Pentecost (Acts 1:14). However, Mary is never mentioned again after Acts chapter 1.
The apostles did not give Mary a prominent role. Mary’s death is not recorded in the Bible. Nothing is said about Mary ascending to heaven or having an exalted role there. As the earthly mother of Jesus, Mary should be respected, but she is not worthy of our worship or adoration.
The Bible nowhere indicates that Mary can hear our prayers or that she can mediate for us with God. Jesus is our only advocate and mediator in heaven (1 Timothy 2:5). If offered worship, adoration, or prayers, Mary would say the same as the angels: “Worship God!” (see Revelation 19:10; 22:9.) Mary herself sets the example for us, directing her worship, adoration, and praise to God alone: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has been mindful of the humble state of His servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is His name” (Luke 1:46-49).

I think anyone who is self aware can already distinguish between just a lustful sexual act-when you're just in a desperate need to use your body, versus an actual physical demonstration of love.

But here’s the thing. Idolization is a sin. Worshipping someone or something other than God is a great sin and that’s what some religions that claim to believe in God do by idolizing Mary. I’m not trying to bash anyone’s beliefs here but if we are talking about the master of the universe aka Jesus (God) then that’s the absolute truth. I also have respect for her for giving birth to the loving God but she was just a human and isn’t God and up in heaven she’s not seen as the mother of God, she is seen as the child of God.

You are right, but at the same time, your opinion is not relevant here. There is a very bad mistake in your understanding. Nobody worships Mary, all Catholic and Orthodox believers always worship God the Trinity only. We are talking about Mary and also the saints because we put our honour in them, especially St Mary as Mother of Jesus.
We do venerate Mary not worship her, and the saints.

      Orthodox Immaculate Conception:
The patriarch Photius. In his first homily on the Annunciation, he says that Mary was sanctified ek Brephous. This is not an easy term to translate; the primary meaning of Brephos is that of a child in the embryonic state. Ek means origin or starting point. The phrase seems to me to mean not that Mary was sanctified in the embryonic state, that is to say, during her existence in her mother’s womb, but that she was sanctified from the moment of her existence as an embryo, from the very first moment of her formation - therefore - from the moment of her conception. (1)
A contemporary and opponent of Photius, the monk Theognostes, wrote in a homily for the feast of the Dormition, that Mary was conceived by “a sanctifying action”, ex arches - from the beginning. It seems to me that this ex arches exactly corresponds to the “in primo instanti“ of Roman theology. (2)
St Euthymes, patriarch of Constantinople (+917), in the course of a homily on the conception of St Anne (that is to say, on Mary’s conception by Anne and Joachim) said that it was on this very day (touto semerou) that the Father fashioned a tabernacle (Mary) for his Son, and that this tabernacle was “fully sanctified” (kathagiazei). There again we find the idea of Mary’s sanctification in primo instanti conceptionis. (3)
Gregory Palamas, archbishop of Thessalonica and doctor of the hesychasm (+1360) in his 65 published Mariological homilies, developed an entirely original theory about her sanctification. On the one hand, Palamas does not use the formula “immaculate conception” because he believes that Mary was sanctified long before the “primus instans conceptionis“, and on the other, he states quite as categorically as any Roman theologian that Mary was never at any moment sullied by the stain of original sin. Palamas’ solution to the problem, of which as far as we know, he has been the sole supporter, is that God progressively purified all Mary’s ancestors, one after the other and each to a greater degree than his predecessor so that at the end, eis telos, Mary was able to grow, from a completely purified root, like a spotless stem “on the limits between created and uncreated”. (4)
The Emperor Manuel II Paleologus (+1425) also pronounced a homily on the Dormition. In it, he affirms in precise terms Mary’s sanctification in primo instanti. He says that Mary was full of grace “from the moment of her conception” and that as soon as she began to exist … there was no time when Jesus was not united to her”. We must note that Manuel was no mere amateur in theology. He had written at great length on the procession of the Holy Spirit and had taken part in doctrinal debates during his journeys in the West. One can, therefore, consider him as a qualified representative of the Byzantine theology of his time. (5)
George Scholarios (+1456), the last Patriarch of the Byzantine Empire, has also left us a homily on the Dormition and an explicit affirmation of the Immaculate Conception. He says that Mary was “all pure from the first moment of her existence” (gegne theion euthus). (6)
Cyril Lukaris (+1638). He too gave a sermon on the Dormition of Our Lady. He said that Mary “was wholly sanctified from the very first moment of her conception (ole egiasmene en aute te sullepsei) when her body was formed and when her soul was united to her body”; and further on he writes: “As for the Panaghia, who is there who does not know that she is pure and immaculate, that she was a spotless instrument, sanctified in her conception and her birth, as befits one who is to contain the One whom nothing can contain?” (7)
Gerasimo, patriarch of Alexandria (+1636), taught at the same time. according to the Chronicle of the Greek, Hypsilantis, that the Theotokos “was not subject to the sin of our first father” (ouk npekeito to propatopiko hamarte mati); and a manual of dogmatic theology of the same century, written by Nicholas Coursoulas (+1652) declared that “the soul of the Holy Virgin was made exempt from the stain of original sin from the first moment of its creation by God and union with the body.” (8)
It was after the Bull of Pius IX, Ineffabilis Deus, of 8 December, 1854, that the greater part of the Greek Church seems to have turned against belief in the Immaculate Conception. Yet, in 1855, the Athenian professor, Christopher Damalas, was able to declare: “We have always held and always taught this doctrine. This point is too sacred to give rise to quarrels and it has no need of a deputation from Rome”. (9)

Dispassionate conception doesn't mean that we believe emotions are bad, but the particular passions that are manifestations of sinful desires of our fallen nature which lead us away from God if we yield to them instead of his commandments, lust is also one of these passions. That concept about Mary's parents implies that they simply had a procreative act out of will to make new life without lustful desires in their heart

    • @blinchick68plus23
      @blinchick68plus23 10 місяців тому

Our sinful desires weren't redeemed to the point that they are no longer sinful, our natute is still fallen and we are still capabale of sin. True love can still exist without a sinful passion, in fact this is what original type of human love was untill our fall, God has made us in this sinless love and we were meant to inherit it too, which we have a chance to do now that Christ has died and risen for us. Lust and many other "natural" passions is only part of our fallen nature and not of God's image inside of us which we are called to restore. So I don't understand what's so sad about people trying to get rid of their impurity to restore the beauty inside of us, yes sex without passion makes it hollier and it works on many other things too
There were also many cases of such conception without a sin in the Bible besides Mary's parents

As far as I know, actually, in Orthodoxy we tend to avoid the expression "original sin" (except for philosophical discussions) because we don't want to imply that there is some "guilt" being passed on. However we believe in a different notion - the imperfect nature of man and by consequence, its perfectibility and "mobility" on this path. In other words, we inherit our mortal nature and our inherent limitations that come, but we are not "condemned" to stay at this level, we can constantly achieve (or lose and then achieve again) the image of God in us (as we were meant to be). Holy Mary, is the one that shows us that a human can really achieve this.

It is kind of irrelevant to be honest. She can intercede for us and that is that. What we need to focus on is not whether Mary was born with immaculate conception or not, but we need to focus on our relationship with God and our lord and savior Jesus Christ. We need to come to honest evaluation of ourselves and ask ourself are we living out the gospel by the Holy Spirit or are we living in sin? Are we taking part in the sacraments? Or are we doing so just going through the motions with zero intention in our heart? Jesus loves us all and that is what is important that His most precious body and blood gives us life. It infuriates me as a Catholic that so many churches here in the US don’t give out the blood. It’s like they forgot what Jesus said in John 6:54 whoever eats my body AND whoever drinks my blood. We will not be condemned for this though because it isn’t our fault but the churches fault. Anyway, Jesus paid the debts of our sins, for the wages of sin is death, in His life’s blood so we may find life in Him. He rose again and so we must leave our tomb empty. Trust in Jesus! Ask Mary in her immaculate heart to lead you to her son! Also come to God directly but also you can ask the saints are Mary to intercede for you and pray for you. Don’t get so lost in all the minor differences in theology and belief such as this difference between Orthodox and Catholic theology. Whatever happened was God’s will and that is that for me. I know Mary can intercede for us. Whether she sinned or not (which I heavily believe she didn’t sin because Luke 1:26 says she is full of grace, but she did need a savior). Either way she can intercede for us and guide us in the way of life in her son our lord and savior Jesus Christ!!

Not irrelevant. Jesus didn't waste his last dying excruciating breaths from the cross saying "this is your mother" for no reason. The Immaculate Conception is necessary because Mary was destined to be the mother of God, and therefore had to be free from sin in order for her to be an acceptable vessel for Jesus. Without the Immaculate Conception, Mary would have been born with original sin, and would not have been sanctified and purified as she was in order to accept Jesus.

The reason why the Orthodox Church has no need of the Catholic doctrine is that "original sin", as understood by the Latin Church, isn't recognised in the east. For us Orthodox, original sin does not denote the inheritance of the sin of the first couple (Adam and Eve); rather it describes the fact of all humanity having inherited the decay and fallen nature of those original sinners. We do believe that the Theotokos was sinless, but we also believe that, like all of us, she struggled and was tempted; this makes her a far more potent figure in Orthodoxy than in Catholicism, for she is proof that, through Christ, we may totally escape sin.

Nor necessarily, you Catholics in tbe comments seem to not understand the Orthodox view and argue.
Catholics believe in the Immaculate Conception, that Mary was born pure from and unable to sin.
Orthodox believe that Mary was simply an ordinary human being. She is able to sin, and was able to be tempted, for she was an ordinary human being. Despite this, she never sinned. In my opinion this makes Mary far more impressive, as she was born able to sin, but never did so. In the short, the impassionate conception is mentioned, the belief that Mary's parents made Mary with intentions pure, pure of passion, simply in order of procreation.
      --------
Catholics believe that because Mary was born sinless and unable to sin, she was chosen by God to give birth to Jesus, for she were perfect and sinless.
You stated that she has to have been born sinless in order for her to be qualified enough to give birth to Jesus, but that is not the case, as believed by the Orthodox Church.
The Orthodox believe that Mary was an ordinary human, able to sin and able to be tempted. She wasn't born perfect or sinless, but an ordinary human who can sin. Despite this ability to be tempted and to sin, she resisted and never gave into sin and never sinned. This makes her ideal to be chosen by the Lord to give birth to Christ, and is the mainstream Orthodox view.
In my opinion it is far more impressive to be born as an ordinary human able sin, but to resist all sin and temptation, being able to be granted the virtue of baring Christ - than to bare Christ, not because you have succeeded, but because you are born without sin or ability to sin.

Well, that’s one roundabout way of accepting our Catholic doctrine.

Listen to Fr. Spyridon Bailey, not this person. He actually explains both ideas, where they come from and why the Orthodox Church denies the immaculate conception on more fundemental grounds.

I thought the same. It looks like they can't admit they are wrong about it, so they came up with something similar just to calm down their conscience.

Catholics were not the first Christians. In fact, Indian Kerala orthodoxy was established by St. Thomas the apostle himself. So, we know a thing or two as well. However obscure you might find it. Our traditions and beliefs are as old as the Jesus's Times itself.

I'm a orthodox Christian and somehow I always think how complicated people make it. Just confess with your mouth that Christ is Lord and believe he resurrected himself from the death after 3 days and that's about it.🎉

Orthodox church did not reject the doctrine. It simply didn't participate in it since they were not in communion with the Universal Church under the Petrine Ministry. You cannot "reject" something that was not yours or offered to you to start off with. The Greek Rite Catholic churches accepted the doctrine as they were part of the Universal Church. The African orthodox Churches taught the doctrine long before the Universal Church promulgated it. The oriental prayer "Agni Parthene" gives strong hint at the immaculate Conception.

"Agni parthene" is not oriental! It is Greek composed by Nektarios in early 20th century.

I do not understand why Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions spend so much time on mariology. I see Mary as a holy woman who is right in the eyes of God. I do not feel the need to speculate on how she was conceived, or whether she died a virgin, or whatever else. There is nothing in the Bible which further emphasizes Mary and the Bible is about her son, not about her.

Not true. In Genesis 3:15 God told the woman that there will be enmity between her and the serpent, and that through Her the salvation of man will come. In Apocalypse 11 and 12 we see the great image of the Ark of the Covenant descending from the Temple of God, and it suddenly transforms into a great sign: A Woman, clothed with the sun, with the moon under Her feet, and on Her head a crown of twelve stars. The serpent declares war upon the woman who is pregnant with the Messiah, but she is protected by God.
This powerful image shows us what a great privilege the second Eve receives from God, she is honored by God Himself who crowns her like a Queen and clothes her with the Sun and offers the moon at her feet. Mary, when the angel appeared to her, was filled with the Holy Spirit and proclaimed "Blessed be the Lord who has done great things unto me. From now on all nations will call me blessed!".
At the circumcision of the Lord, Mary and Joseph met Simeon, who prophesied to Mary that a sword will pierce her own heart too, meaning she will partake in the suffering of her Son for the salvation of the World.
The virgin Mary is the handiwork of God, the second Eve, the new Ark of the Covenant; we shall rejoice in her as our Queen and Mother.
