Varg’s work definitely made me aware of some cracks I had as it pertains to mission. He helped me solidify what and why my mission is what it is today. I’m not saying that to criticize what you said. I know someone who was attacked by a group of rowdy bikers at a neighboring campsite when he asked them to keep the noise down. During his beat-down he pulled a gun and shot one of them. The bikers scattered, and the person who he shot, died. The defendant turned himself in before he had even been identified, believing he had a good case for self-defense. However, at his trial, the other bikers testified that he came to their campsite and threatened them with his gun, and then shot one of them. The defendant served four years in prison (with good behavior).
I totally agree with all the ramifications he brings up. Regarding that saying...I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6, to me, I've always taken it to mean I would rather have the means to protect myself even in situations where it broke the law such as having a concealed weapon where you're "not supposed to". In other words, if having the tools available to defend myself meant I was breaking a law I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6. But, that is just MY interpretation of the phrase and again, I totally agree with what Varg points out and people need to be aware of those ramifications. Good stuff!
So, would it be better to spend the rest of your life crippled by your injuries (assuming you survived the assault) or spend some of your life in prison because you couldn't convince a jury that the disparity of force necessitated your use of a lethal weapon to prevent grievous bodily harm? Perhaps the answer depends upon the jurisdiction in which you are prosecuted, and what the prosecution's witnesses will say (or lie about).
not sure I heard anyone recommend not to defend self with lethal force. Just be very clear on the ramifications of that and maybe start paying some structured attention to the steps on the road leading up to that moment where The Bad Thing comes for you. Everywhere you can, just smoothly and purposefully choose the way that reduces the real probabilities of The Bad Thing happening without unduely deviating from your general course or adding unacceptable friction or encumbrance. Like where and when you go, how you respond to the shoulder bump, cultivating self-control, having mission parameters, grooved in procedures and capabilities (like moving fast over rough ground in the dark encumbered by a sack of potatoes) , etc, so that you can respond to what is actually coming at you rather than having to plan based on a guess which you have incomplete data for, and that you have to do beforehand or on the fly, during the fight, thus taking your attention away from your murderer. Not good. Plus this planning is a higher order brain function that shuts down early under extreme duress. Just continuously and purposefully enjoy the increased ability for YOU to be the one who decides when, how, and where the violence comes, and when it stops, and for what purpose. Continuously increase Self-determination Makes it a lot easier in many ways, especially psychologically / socially / spiritually when you do have to cause an attack to cease. Essentially, you take less integration damage to your person, who you feel or see yourself to be, because you are not ripping your fundamental orientation anchors out. It leaves your picture of yourself that you are comfortable inhabiting with reduced damage and more easily diagnosed and addressed. So yeah, stab the shit out of him with maximum savagery until the attack ceases if that is what it takes for you or your loved ones to continue to live, just don’t close your eyes while you are doing it. Strong Peace.
Excellent guest again Tim. Thought provoking for sure. I think those that have an intimate relationship with violence have a much deeper appreciation towards avoiding it in the first place. Such people tend to have a much easier time letting go of the innocuous verbal goading in society that so easily hook insecure people. There's just something about having been there that gives experienced eyes an easier time letting go of the silly stuff.
Hi Tim , I got your book "When Violence is The Answer' and read it little by little letting the info Soak in, and i am glad I DID. Thursday 8/26/ 2 days ago I had an aide Someone to help with Meals, Housework ,etc .that I thought was good. She did what I needed her to do and I signed her out.She then waited to go to job , Driving a School bus.She had mentioned that she was trying to get the IRS NOT to Garnish her Wages. I see her in Living room talking to them on the phone.She had me crate my Pug because she is Scared of Dogs Supposedly. then see her come in my room turn and wave then I hear my front door shut.I crack open the front door and see she's standing there talking on the phone so i go lay back down. The next thing I know she cussing at Me, and I am nosy and all up in her business and that when she' leaves she will tell ME, when she leaves. Now I am in the bed with a USMC Fighting Knife a Bowie Knife a Box Cutter a Swinguard Leverlock Switchblade and a Cali Legal Switchblade on my bed clearly visible to her. Before I read your book I would have probably told her to F-off and probably added these Knives are Real and Sharp and that IF I lost ALL Sense of Reason and Sanity like she was doing the coroner would be putting her parts in a body bag. I just took it though ,then vented My frustration to My Mom. because she said what I was thinking ,that she (the aide) was mad at her Self because she didn't pay taxes, and she was worried her Wages would be garnished. What can i say i like to collect Knives, Guns too I have a loaded 9mm and a 44 SPL Snub nosed Revolver in my nightstand drawer. The Sheriff down at the Gun Range said I shoot like a like a Sniper with a Handgun 75 FT. and ALL my shots with a Handgun are Between the eyes in thspace of a Quarter or a 50 cent piece. I have told Everybody I know I Don't want to fight or kill anyone BUT IF I Can't get Away, am NOT going to just Stand there and let them do it to me. I Like that you Don't just put the Most Well- known People on here, BUT People who Really have Been there and done That .Not taking away from the others But Varg Freeborn has seen BOTH Sides of a a vERY Tricky Coin.

Awesome. I’ve been hoping you’d have Varg on. If anyone hasn’t read the book don’t hesitate to pick it up. I think it should be required reading for anyone who’s interested in this type of content. As well as anyone who carries weapons for protection. I always thought Tim and Chris did a fantastic job on the mental side of this topic. Actually I still do. Varg takes that mindset to another level imo.
OK. You got me engaged. Yet, more books I'll have to read. I read "Meditations On Violence" after watching the Rory Miller interview. It was one of the best books I've ever read on the reality of violent conflict. I disagreed on only one point he made in the hostage section of the book (just opinion based), but other than that, I couldn't argue with any of the topics he wrote about. I hope Varg's books are as full of truth as Rory's book. As soon as he explained that he has trained extensively with law enforcement, and had been immersed in the criminal world, it peaked my interest. With any sort of logical/critical thinking, this sort of exposure to both sides of the coin can really make for a deep understanding of what works and what doesn't. Both sides do some ineffective things, and very effective things. Being able to "cherry pick" tactics, mindset, and skills from both arenas, through experience, is rare. I can't wait to read his thoughts after combining the two perspectives.
Sorry but that phrase has more meaning that just what it says. Besides the ramifications that are obvious to any rational person. The root of the statement means that you have thought about, (hopefully thoroughly), your options and came to the conclusion that if you don't act it will result in your death. And you have decided that being judged for trying to defend yourself out weighs the ultimate sacrifice of giving up your life. Perhaps because many others depend on you or even at that moment are the ones you are protecting. Yes I do agree that those who say that without knowing your three day, three week, three years rule are fooling themselves. Love the interviews and the content. I have read books such as Kill or be killed and On Killing by Col. Grossman. Among other things. There's a saying that you learn something old every day and I believe it.
