    I usually don't comment but this video saved my life real talk I never did it before and people kept saying change the entire rear end on my 1999 silverado ibwas getting high 7-$1200 for a read end until I seen this video I went outside and changed it out with no problems this was my only vehicle getting to work with a lawn service on the side man I really appreciate it!!

      thinkbeforeuspeak was your rear end making a "popping" noise when you would turn from a low speed? I have a 2000 silverado and I'm trying to figure out what the problem is.

    • @bloosaw1
      @bloosaw1 7 років тому +1

      Noah Robin well it wasn't making any noise at first just felt like a slipping transmission,then woke to go to work and the drives haft was spinning inside the rear end

    • @LL.Johnson
      @LL.Johnson 7 років тому +1

      Noah, your spider gears/ or LSD is trashed. Just open your inspection cover on rear axle... Figure out what's busted and move forward. Should be busted spider gears though.
      I just developed the same problem with my 2000 Silverado. Only happens when I turn right at slow speed.
      I just hope there is no damage to the Ring & Pinion when I get in there to see what's happening.

    I own a 01 Chevy Suburban LT 1500 I'm running a corner this morning I hear a little grinding and then all the sudden at the Apex boom grind grind grind and immediately I knew something bad happened in the diff. so I baby it home luckily without any spider gears falling out and I bust open the cover and low and behold the actual shaft is sheared off and missing on one side and the other side is still in barely being held by its screw As a result of the other side being broken not sure how I did that but I did . I will be making a video to the same effect that I will upload and post a link to. thank you very much this was very helpful and you're editing / explaning skills are impeccable these kinds of videos are what makes UA-cam so helpful thank you again

    So happy I found this video. I think you just saved me about a thousand bucks!!! I was going to hire someone to do this for me, but since I think I'm just doing the spiders now, I'm going to try myself. My old Suburban has 150K miles, so I think it's probably time. Starting to make some noises in the back so I at least need to open it up and look. THANKS SO MUCH!!!

      I’m pretty sure that carrier has to be removed to get the gears in properly. Probably why he didn’t show that.

  • @ImaLoneWolfintheWoods
    @ImaLoneWolfintheWoods 9 років тому +2

    I'm about to do this on a 2000 silverado, I had one hell of a time to find the right spiders, because my carrier is two large window, ordered at my local parts store and waited friggen 6 weeks to find out, they ordered wrong gearset. I finally got the right parts I ordered online. I found it was difficult cleaning out the metal dust flakes all out of the differential, but I think I'll run it for a little while and then do a fluid change to hopefully get rid of the rest of metal flakes. Thanks for the great video, up until this point I have never once opened up a differential, but I have rebuilt motors and transmissions and almost everything else. Changing these spiders is quite simple!

    Absolutely amazing video! Very well explained! I was praying I would find a video like this because I too have never messed with the rear end and I was super nervous to get into it but knew no matter what I was going to try because I don't want to have to pay a mechanic to get this job done. I'm not 100% sure yet if it's just the bearings or if it's the spider gears but either way after watching this video I am confident I can get it done! Thank you for putting this together I greatly appreciate it :-)

    Jo Daddy.....Really good video of the problem and fixes for it. In the comments Dee Money and T-1 seem to have outlined the problem I am having with my "92" Chevy 1500, plus I'm getting a vibration at highway speeds. I had it a month ago, then it disappeared, and now it has reappeared! Time to pop the cover and take a look. Again, great video!

    It's always a good idea to pull both axles completely out so to clean up/inspect the axle tubes/wheel bearings of filings/metal chunks and replace axle seals while doing so. Chances are some debris has worked it's way towards the wheels.

    Great video. Very informative. I'm surprised the truck moved at all with the gears chewed up like that. With all that destruction and metal shavings, aren't you worried the shavings will get in the bearings and tear them up too (if it hadn't already)? Or did you clean them up before reinstalling?

    • @JoDaddysGarage
      @JoDaddysGarage  10 років тому +1

      I did not remove the bearings, but I did use a few cans of cleaner and a lot of shop towels cleaning it out. The owners have put a lot of miles on it, and have no issues.

    So tonight I was driving and hauling trailer and kept hearing metal on metal sounds and thought it was the trailer well was going up a hill and then heard a pop and metal on metal and my 01 suburban would not drive anymore. I could put it in gear and left off the brake and you could hear metal on metal and but the wheels were going. So put it on 4x4 and limped home. So by chance could this be what's wrong with mine before I go and purchase a whole new rear end

    I am getting a suburban soon that has been sitting for 2 years. Same model and year. It too was parked after the spider gears went out. When talking to people with a little mechanical background they say that the new gears can be difficult to put in and the alignment of them is critical. Your video doesn't address this. Is that something someone with average mechanical skills needs to worry about? Your video makes it look relatively easy.

      Hey man if you don't mind, how do you find out what R.G. you have I know from the RPO GT4 its 373 gears but the parts house what to know if its an 8.5 8.6 9.5 10.5 or 11.0 I took a tape from one side of the diff to the other and it was 11.0? don't think I'm doing this right. Going with Motive gears from Advanced Auto for $140 out the door. thx again Jon

      If I remember correctly, it goes by the VIN number. I had gone to the dealer to buy the gears from them, and I gave them the VIN. They told me the size, and that the gears were o$450+. I thanked them and left. Other than that I don't have an answer. If it helps, the ring gear is the big gear, and the pinion is the drive gear from the drive shaft. www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PR-ARB/articles/14b_Gear_Setup/
      Not sure if this will post, but there are plenty of pics on google.

    • @jstreet4354
      @jstreet4354 10 років тому +1

      Yeah dead on on the Ring Gear, the 8.5 numbers are killing me the ratio being 373 you would think that number would be the only one you need. I bet all the spiders are the same and only "duh" the ring gear would make a difference when replacing everything, but I got a print out from the dealer, b/c I could not find out if someone did a swap on the transfer case, found it has a (TC) from 2500 HD's under it from the factory, I swear this was some rich guys toy in the Hamptons only as far as I could track the truck down LOL Thankx Alot for the replies man BIG BIG HELP, I'll be watching out for more of your vids! Mark Bugley I didn't use anything but what came in the gear set kit. The shims were already in there. I was surprised at how nice it fit. That was a concern I had, but I was told that it's different than if you pulled the carrier itself.

      I think as long as you are only removing the spiders, it is simple and won't require any measurements, but if you pull the carrier it can be a lot of precision work to make it right, the only thing I would want to take out carrier for would be to swap out the inner bearings, myself personally I am swapping only the spiders. Anything more and I would have to leave to the pros who are set up to fine tune the differential.

    Jo I have the same situation going on ,only thing is I have a 4×4 suburban . but upon inspection of gears when I pulled them . there exactly the same as what these are . so I ordered some and the gear teeth ain't the same count ..my question being , is that will that hurt my transfer case when in four wheel because gear teeth are bigger ? thanks great vid

      @JoDaddysGarage  7 років тому +2

      I actually had the same issue. The factory set had more teeth. It won't matter because you're installing them as a set. You're not changing the ring gear or pinion, just the internals.

    I think that spider pin is flat on two ends because the bolt that holds the pin in..has to go by it to tighten it...does this make since...

      Yes. It was grinding, but at this point, it was slipping internally.

      Yeah it's extortion how much a mechanic charges. Average American makes 15 to $25 an hour average mechanic charges between 55 and 95 an hour math doesn't add up. Plus their jobs are brought to them hell they could drive a moped back and forth to work. 90% of Carpenters have to have a full size pickup truck ladder rack and all their tools and have to drive all over the goddamn State just to complete their jobs

    • @MoreBo0st
      @MoreBo0st 7 років тому +3

      Its the shop that charges that much not the mechanic. The mechanic still makes just enough money to get by. Trust me i've been a mech for 10 years now that might not seem like alot but im only 27. The shops are the dirty ones that screw people over don't blame all mechanics.

    • @siaripop7
      @siaripop7 7 років тому +1

      Yep, it is usually the shop, which pay the mechanic, who get a large percentage of the repair costs. However, they do provide the facilities for working on vehicles, like the heat, AC, lights, lifts, insurance, etc, etc. so they have to make some money for those things too!

      Jo Daddy's Garage also, my truck jolts when I put it in park sometimes, and when I hit about 45mph it starts to jolt funny. When I step on the gas a little more it had no problems. I definitely need a new rear end.
