First time hearing this, amazing. Something about French organ music is so different. In music school I was frowned at for hanging with the organ majors. I could get to the organ on Friday nights and would spend hours playing thru the WTC experimenting with different stops. I really want this album, Durufle is an amazing composer.
@BVale It was a small college the organ wasn't that big, but it had lots of pipes and stops. I actually learned how to fix the ciphers, crawling up into the loft. My fellow piano majors thought I was insane. I can't play the organ because my feet are not connected to my brain, I got a C in the one semester organ that was required. I could not get my feet to move. I loved Bach so much that I actually saw Virgil Fox once when I was 15, it was like a rock concert. Actually right now I just got a transcription of the Passacaglia and Fugue by d'Albert for piano and I am playing thru it every day now writing in fingerings. I grew up playing violin play viola and flamenco guitar also. Sounds like your uncle! HAHA
What's epic is when you realise the piece is modal, and retains full emotion and build up, which is seemingly quite tricky to do and yet Durufle pulls it off perfctly
Great, effortless performance. (Can anyone tell me what the thumb pistons (righthand end of the Great and Swell manuals) that look like a page with the corner turned down are for, please?)
Some of the pipework in this instrument is from the William Hill organ in the 19th century. Mostly though this is the work of Arthur Harrison in the 1930s. He specifically voiced the stops of the choir organ himself, which included the three mutation stops that were very unusual additions at that time. The clarity of the sound is also due to the chapel itself. The stone vaulted roof, the largest fan vaulted roof in the world, contribute to a warm but very clear acoustic. You would need to listen in person yourself to confirm that King's College chapel is a very special place for music making.
@@ds1868 I have heard several organs that were voiced by G Donald Harrison. Mr.Harrison's voicing of The St.John the Divine Pipe Organ, in NYC,shows ,when voiced properly, can fill the largest cathedral, in The United States, with glorious sound with a "decay" of over 12 delicious seconds.
Brilliant playing. Too bad it is overshadowed by the sub-par recording. I'm assuming Grammaphon never actually listened to the album, because calling it "An exceptionally fine recording... with great detail" is just a straight up lie.
@BVale of course. I have never heard this particular organ in the metal before, so maybe it's just a mix of registration + mic distance that's causing the problem. However, I refuse to believe that this beautiful organ sounds as veiled as the recording portrays.
@@SR009s this was a live transmission so there may have been problems with the UA-cam platform. When sitting in the Quire which is on the East side of the screen the sound is crystal clear. This is true of the Great Choir and swell divisions as all the pipework faces east within the organ case. There is a small amount of loss in definition for the Solo and larger pedal stops as these are located within the screen on the south side, and not the organ case itself. Listening to the organ is a very special experience, the warm acoustic of the chapel enhancing the instrument. For both the organ and choir it is probably one of the finest locations to perform in England. Certainly for the vocal aspect cohesion is perfect. You would need to visit yourself to appreciate this.

@@SR009s I forgot to mention that the Great reeds are also in the Solo box, which as mentioned before is placed within the South screen and not the organ case itself. They are typical Harrison tromba reeds, very fine in their own respect, but not located in the best position for clarity. Being Trombas they are also a bit 'splashy'. This isn't a big problem when in the chapel, but I do wonder if they cause problems for clarity when used especially for live transmissions. Just a thought.
@@ds1868 you learn something new everyday! Thank you for bringing this information to my attention, as I'm admittedly not too knowledgeable on this organ. What you mention is certainly interesting, but in this case, I don't believe my 'problem' with the recording to be any fault of the organ.
With all due respect to the organist, I must disagree with the comments below. This composition is not music, but pure noise and distortion. There is no singable melody throughout. On a positive note: you really don't have to practise this. You could simply sight read it, make a million mistakes - and nobody would ever notice!
@@MrWilhelm1950 I think you really need to like the music of Durufle to appreciate it. Same applies to everything really but more so here. Personally I am not a great fan. I've always found his music to be either fussy, or agitated, or both. In this performance I think the tempo is also a little rushed. In person it would work if sitting east of the screen in the Quire, but in a recording a slightly slower tempo may help. No criticism of Thomas Trotter who is one of the most pre-eminent of English organists. But in a live stream performance it will be difficult to get everything right at least for recording purposes.
@@danswansonguitar well there should be some form of melodic structure otherwise it never really works. I fail to see the 'narrow minded' perspective here either. No one is above criticism, not even Maurice Durufle.

I've lost count of the number of times I've listened to this recording. Effortless performance of a fine composition, which I'm trying to learn.

God, I love the clear sound of English Pipe Organs. It almost sound like an Aeolian Skinner Pipe Organ.

Interesting take on music, and a bit narrow-minded as well; basing musical art on singable melody is extremely limiting.
