DURUFLÉ (1902-1986)
Fugue on the name of Alain
From the Prelude and Fugue on the name of Alain, this piece is a tribute to Duruflé’s friend and colleague Jehan Alain, destined to become one of the great 20th century French composers, but tragically killed in the Second World War.

Reviews for Duruflé, Complete Organ Works:
“I love the way he makes the music shine brightly through that incense-laden atmosphere which seems to shroud so many recordings of this repertory, without actually disturbing it in any way. I do not recall ever having been so excited by this music before. An exceptionally fine recording, which has captured instrument, acoustic and playing with impeccable detail without any sacrificing of atmosphere, and we have here a genuinely exceptional organ release.” - Gramophone (Editor’s Choice)
“Trotter plays like a man possessed to stunning effect.” ★★★★★ - Limelight Magazine
“The superbly engineered recording does full justice to the magnificence of Trotter’s playing.” ★★★★★ - Birmingham Post
“A tour de force” ★★★★★ (Performance) / ★★★★★ (Recording) - BBC Music Magazine

La fuga sur le nom d'Alain è di una dolcezza infinita. il tema e i principali sono meravigliosi toccano il cuore. Un Omaggio migliore al povero Alain non poteva esserci
Thomas, I first met you in 1984, in Birmingham, Alabama USA, when you performed one Sunday in November on the 1923 E.M. Skinner--1967 Aolean-Skinner organ at Independent Presbyterian Church. I worked for Howard Best, the Curator of the Organs at the time at IPC. Your mastery and energy you brought forth in your performance that day always has stayed with me since then. Thank you for being persistent in refining your craft over the decades, and giving the world of your gifts in artful performances. I wish you a bright future, and hope to meet you once again. Allen Vaughan
GLORIOUS!
Magnifique, merci !
As others have noted, this was time well spent. Thank you for the vicarious experience of being there.
Splendid😊💐👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻✨
What an absolute treat! One of the finest pieces for organ ever, on arguably the best of organs, played by a true master. Superb!
This is truly wonderful, but Marie-Clair Alain’s interpretations will always be my favorites. And if this man equals her recorded accomplishments, such as the entirety of Bach’s organ works, 3 times, or maybe 4, I’m certain she will be wearing the crown for many long years. And, of course, she was renowned for her scholarship but, bc females can’t seem to crack through men’s prejudices, even when their knowledge and application are superhuman, I suppose the reputation of the incredible Marie-Claire Alain will sink underneath unmentionable waters. Sick, isn’t it??
@@voraciousreader3341 that’s rather pessimistic. I’m pretty sure M-C Alain’s reputation is at least as secure as any male counterpart. She will live on in high regard.
I don't know if this is the best organ, probably not, but I think we agree on the main issue: this organ work, including the prelude, combines delicacy and strength, and it is very spiritual .. Durufle achieved his objective, I guess, and at the same time paid tribute to great Alain. There is another very good version, as good as this or even better, from Thomas Hopital on St Eustache organ .. marvellous also.
amazing 🤗👏
EXTRAORDINAIRE, MERVEILLEUSEMENT PRODIGUX CHEF -D'ŒUVRE GRANDE MERCI !

You were instrumental in enabling me to enjoy three wonderful years with the London Philharmonic Choir, starting way back in 1984. You accompanied me at my at my audition, in which I was successful, thanks in great measure to you. I will never forget! Thank you also of course for this stunning performance!
