      Gary 65 I don’t know man; since I’ve seen how jackie chan grabbed that guy from his tie and combo-punched him like that when I was a kid, ties make me nervous. Still have one or two versatile ones in my possesion just in case.

    I gave my Father several beautiful ties for Christmas and when he past away i got them all back...and then I gave them as gifts again to young men who needed help improving their wardrobes. I have a young friend who I buy things for from time to time. I'm not wealthy as far as money...but I made the effort to find him a nice sports coat from a vintage shop at a price I could afford. Giving him these gifts I know will help him, especially with his self-view. We don't have to be very wealthy before helping others, we just need to be creative

      My best 100% silk ties all came from a vintage shop for 99 cents.All name brands and well known manufacturers. That's a far cry from 45 bucks at Macy's on sale. I can't express how huge it is to find a nice vintage coat or tie at a second hand store and then right to the dry cleaners to work their craft.

    You know, Hugo... I've been watching videos dealing with sartorial topics for the better part of two years now, read a good amount of literature on classic style etc., so that by now I don't "have" to watch a video on, say, tie construction. I know about it. But no matter how familiar the topic may be: I always watch your videos - because of you (and Sonya, of course!). It's your unfiltered expression of the love you have for the beauty of great garments (I'm willing to add: beauty in general) that makes me come back again and again.
    Salut!

A school for elegance, but also modesty and the spiritual side of sartorialism. I will definetly show these videos to my child, one day if I get a boy. In my opinion, unlined and untipped brocaded ties from the 1920s, '30s, and '40s are the most elegant items a man could wear. Nothing else knots right after you have knotted a beautiful tie from that era. I have several hundred of them in my collection. I had not seen anything modern come close until you showed us your Kenji Kaga. It's nice to know that there are still craftsmen out there making them. At the same time, it is amazing to think that such quality was once common. Thanks for showing us your ties, Hugo!

    Really beautiful explanation of what a tie is. I am coming a bit late on your videos and, generally, on a more in-depth knowledge on the sartorial world and the words you are using to describe the tie and the 'sartorial gesture' that only a gentleman knows and keeps to himself really resonated with me. There is an overall grace in this which I really like and you describe it so well. Thank you!

    I have been enjoying these videos. During lockdown there have been fewer opportunities for good conversations with friends. Whilst obviously not the same, these videos have that feel of an enjoyable conversation. Sometimes Hugo tells me things I don't know, but even when he is talking about things I have known since I was a young man it feels more like agreeing on something during a good chat than being told something I already knew.
    It's a really good presentational style.

    The reason a lot of young people dislike suits and ties is because of the historical association between such clothes and the corporate world. Young people don't want to dress to work like their fathers and grandfathers who always used to wear a boring, often ill-fitting, cheap, generic suit-and-tie uniform to work. Everybody wants to look young and cool these days. People in their 30's and 40's want to look like they're still in college. Cool jeans, fashion sneakers, etc. Suits and ties are seen as an anachronism that's still, somehow, required at courts and government jobs. If the proponents of "classic men's wear", could, somehow, prove to the young people that one can absolutely look cool and youthful in tailored clothing and a tie, more young people would adopt the style. Again, the associations should change and then we'll see a renaissance of classic style.

    • @Tenkterian
      @Tenkterian 4 роки тому +1

      Very true! That's why I personally welcome the "death of the tie" in corporate wear, so that it can be re-installed into menswear as the beautiful artefact that it is. Wearing a beautiful tie with a nice knot and a dimple is nowadays almost punk. ;)

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  4 роки тому

      We have noticed it is the "young men in their late teens and 20s" who are in high attendance to our Sartorial Events, in Europe. It is curious that the "death of the suit" may be what attracted them to the suit, as T describes below. Spot on about (granted a generalization) many men in their 30s and 40s want to look as if they are still in university. Thank you the thought-out response. Hugo

    Enjoyed the video! Looking forward to part 2... one thing I wish was explored more was how the knot is affected by the material (perhaps this is already planned for part 2). While most of the 'high end' ties are silk I've found that some of the most beautiful knots come out of 'non-traditional' silk material (for example I have many ties from Al Bazar made of wool that's used in suits and the same knots just come out nicer and the tie stays tight all day compared to regular silk).

    Great video! Now I know more why my expensive ties are expensive! And you can get high-end ties for half price like 50-60-70 dollars on sale too. So it doesn't have to cost that much

    I've been waiting for you to make a video about ties Hugo! I've developed a love of ties in the last few years (my friend calls it a fetish). There is nothing like the hand and graceful look of a quality, classic tie. I would say it is the most expressive and individual thing a man can get away with wearing in business. At my workplace, I'm now known as 'the guy with the colourful ties'

    I got the sense of fashion since I was a child by watching my mother paying a great attention to the latest French fashion trends. One of the things I learned from her that there is nothing called casual Friday. As a middle aged physician I hate to say that there is hardly anyone who is paying attention to the art of dressing even during the week and not just Friday.😢

    Hugo, you may know of a recent limited edition 11 fold tie from shoemaker George Cleverley. This is from their online store which you may find interesting:
    To celebrate George Cleverley’s 60th Year Anniversary, we have designed a unique collection of handmade 11-fold silk ties. Each tie is completely handmade in Italy using only the finest silk. The silk comes from the village of Bella in Italy. Raso 19 momis is known as the finest silk available. The tie has been cut and stitched by hand, undergoing careful quality control check along the way.
    We have produced four beautifully selected designs by Mr. George Glasgow Jr. Each design is limited to only twenty ties.

    On my first visit to monitor a pharmaceutical investigator's site in Honolulu, I arrived dressed as usual - suit, tie, nice oxford shoes, etc. I was told by the physician in charge & in no uncertain terms to never show up dressed like that again. This was a Monday morning, so casual Friday was never a factor in Hawaii. Bright floral print shirts & khakis were OK, however I had to draw a line at wearing shorts and sandals like the rest of the staff. I had to buy a whole new wardrobe for my Hawaiian visits, however it was a small price to pay for going to Hawaii once a month for a week each time over a 3 year period.

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  4 роки тому

      Understandable yet almost unbelievable. I think these perceptions that dressing down is a mandate comes from a specific generational segment, but have no proof. Young men in their late teens and 20s are the ones who appear to show up in the greatest numbers at Sartorial Events in Europe. Anyway, Hawaii must have been worth the sacrifice, ha. Hugo

    Dear Hugo, thank you once again for the quality of your content and the evident passion for your field. May I suggest dedicating a bit more time to the subject of Louis XIV sometime in your future videos as he was such a fascinating figure in men's fashion and also at a very interesting time in history of fashion in general. It would be incredibly interesting to hear more of your thoughts on the matter. Thank you!

    Hello Hugo! Thank you so much for your books and videos!!! I gained so much from yours and your lovely wife’s wisdom.
    I have a question not quite related to this video but I guess it doesn’t hurt to ask: I have a number of suits and would like to purchase my first black suit. I’ve always been a thrift/Ebay shopper, taking my purchase to a great tailor that know. I found a very nice black suit with a herringbone pattern. I was wondering if the herringbone would be a bad idea or if that kind of suit would be a good addition to my wardrobe?

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  4 роки тому

      Hello, Drew, and thank you for the encouragement to continue.
      Did you happen to see my episode dedicated to the black suit? I think it may address your question. It is always good to trust your instinct in regard to the look of the herringbone design (i.e., does it communicate "quality"?). Cheers, Hugo

    thank you so much for the information. I love the detail with the button and the folding. however, I would like something special for my tie. would you recommend anything? I am thinking a pocket on the backside and maybe some way to have the tie not have to be hemmed down there so you do not see the backside of the cloth. or is it better to have a thin tip?

  • @OneDreams54

    What about knit ties ? I discovered some of those and found their looks a bit interesting.
    Are these ok to wear with formal clothes ? (or to wear at all ?)
    If so, should these be in only one color or severals, also which color(s) ?
    Finally, should it have a flat or a pointed tip (if these are ok) ?
    Thanks for reading my comment.
