7-11 in Japan has better food then most restaurants here in the UK
So apparently the Japanese 7-Eleven's are like mini to-go restaurants, while the ones in the US serve packaged processed food, or reheated frozen processed garbage. It's almost an insult to call them the same store, how do we let them get away with this crap here?

As a foreigner living in Japan. I can say that I can’t live without convenience store food. And most people in Japan can’t. The deserts, drinks, breads, hot foods everything is soo good, fresh and convenient when you’re having a lazy day or craving something.

There's no comparison between U.S 7 Elevens and the 7-11 in Asia. Dramatic difference on quality of food and service. For ppl who live in the U.S and want to experience the Asia 7-11s, go to Hawaii. 7-11s are run by different companies in Asia which explains the significant difference. As an American, I barely go to 7-11 except if I need a drink. Food is mostly unedible unless ur drunk, high or don't care
OK I'm curious about 7-11 Hawaii. Did it have the same menu as Japan (or Asia in general)?
@@1985toyotacamry 7-11s in Asia sell locally made foods so each country sell different assortments of food. For example, 7-11s in South Korea have foods and drinks that you don't find in a Japanese 7-11s or a Chinese 7-11s. 7-11s in Hawaii are run by the same company that runs 7-11s in Asia but they do carry some of the American drinks and snacks and include the local fare that you can find all over Hawaii.
@@Lucarus100 that's very interesting. I definitely need to check that out when I am visiting Hawaii. Because here in Florida also have a bit of a flair but not as extensive.
As a Hawaii resident, 7-11 has stepped up their efforts here to provide better food options.

Man, this video just reminded me how much better the konbinis in Japan were. I won't even go to a 7-11 in the US but almost went every night in Japan just to try so many of the snacks. What a stark contrast.

They're actually different, Hawaii 7-11s carry both types. The 'Japan' style one uses a pastry dough that expands and layers kind-of like a Croissant. (It's still pastry dough, however.) While there are 2 kinds that are commonly available that look like the 'US' kind, a normal glazed US donut and an older type glazed cake-donut. (You can tell them apart when looking at them, but glazing them does make that a bit more difficult.)

The big difference is that Japanese will not tolerate sub-par choices. They also take pride in their offerings to serve their community.
Here in USA, not so much. Corporate could care less. It’s about profit only. I was in Japan a few years ago and was very impressed with the 7-11’s and Lawson. Kept us nourished during our trvels.

No contest. Japan wins every category. They pretty much perfected the "convenience store". Pricing = amazing. Choices = Phenomenal. Packaging = A+. And just by looks alone, Taste = Way Better.

Not only Japan but most of Asian and south Asian countries. Korean CU convenient stores Chinese ones in Beijing and Thai , Family Marts in Malaysian and Singapore ones are insanely good. But I got disappointed with US stores. In general here food is too big and unhealthy portions and tastes artificial plus only healthy options that are available is so expensive(
Depends on your taste everyone grows up with a different preference. Personally I like the Japanese sytle, but I have a friend that would be grossed out by stuff like curry bread

For anyone who’s ever visited japan, you can literally get a quality meal from 7-11. It’s not even a comparison. I wouldnt set foot in a 7-11 in america but went almost daily in japan.
I hear Thailand's 7-11 is also pretty good! I can say for sure that Taiwan's 7-11 is just as good (where I'm from)

@@jomontanee I haven’t been to Thailand’s 7-11 before, so I just based it off of some food reviews I’ve seen about Thailand’s 7-11 but glad to know it lives up to its name for being one of the top 7-11s in Asia!

The Hawaii 7-11s are next level compared to maiinland american 7-11s and very much similar to Asian 7-11s
Man I was obsessed with Japan as a kid and all that food is reminding me why. I was a fat kid who loved food, and all the Japanese movies/tv shows I watched as a kid had me drooling.

Me, as a European, am always so surprised about the drink sizes in the US. How can the smallest soda be 651ML!! That would in the Netherlands be enough for the entire family!! (I mean in Japan they have 1l and 1.5 liter packages but they are clearly to pour in glasses and share, they aren't portion sized...
I can explain dome aspect of that. We fill with a lot of ice, typically, because the cups aren't insulated. As soon as you walk outside in the middle of summer, that large amount of ice is going to melt in quick time, so it helps to keep the drink colder for a longer time. And if you're driving around a lot with that in your car, even with AC on its going to melt in the Summer heat.
But again, it also depends on where you're located. The south/south-west gets upward to 120F, so insulated cups are vital to keeping drinks cold. But up Noth it can be up to about 90F. Even with that cool temp your drink is going to melt quickly. So big cup means more waste but a longer cool time than a smaller cup.
There's also people who take fountain drinks to work if they forget their water bottle or insulated cup. I've literally seen my coworkers bring 8n and hide their cups, which they'll be the largest size to be able to drink for several hours.

Asian 7-Elevens, specially the far east ones are just a league of their own. They are truly "convenient" from practical daily needs, snacks, ready meals, bill payment, etc
It's always exciting going to one and checking what the new seasonal food items are. Always exciting when you go in and realize a fresh batch of fried goodies just came out of the fryer 😍

When I went abroad to Japan many years ago 7-11 was a saving grace. 7-11 and Family Mart (similar to 7-11). Daily convenience items, banking, event tickets, hot food, drinks, alcohol. They really are mini hot food + grocery + convenience stores. Rated 20 out of 10 for japan. Maybe a 5/10 for US 7-11 (mainly over processed and prepackaged foods/drinks)

US 7-Eleven Stores are pretty sad compared to the Japanese ones. I agree with you Joe, the food is horrible in both Canada and the US. George, you should have had milk after that spicy FINAL Noodle Dish. Milk stops the burning and coats your tongue and throat.

Not really
Calpis or Melon Soda. Asia actually has milk-derived soft drinks that work the same, no need for plain milk. =)
Sometimes I find it makes worse I'm guessing it depends on the spice. It either helps cool it or enhances it. But I love putting milk in my ramen and most things when I think about 🤔
@@milliedragon4418 Yes, it depends on the what part of your mouth is affected by the specific spice. There are a few that stick and spread with any kind of drink.
And there are some people that are so sensitive to it that it's hard for them to counteract the reaction at all. (Cousin is like this, she's not allergic to it. She's just really sensitive to it, we can literally put a few drops of Tabasco into a gallon pot of stew and she can still taste the difference.)
So what we all learned is that Japanese 7- Elevens are mini restaurants, and far better then American 7-Elevens. But who’s surprised?
I have watched a lot of travel (never at the privilege of going there myself ) vlogs/locals coming in I already knew. USA never understood a chance. I can see why East Asians enjoy their 7-11s so much I wish it was like that here. I hope the corporate watches the video and learns from their Asian counterparts. Localize, have fresher meals. You can still have the quickness and convenience. I'll still keep the big gulp that's an icon.
USA 7-11 is too generic. But imagine different regions and communities being represented in their local 7-Eleven it would be amazing.

My family and I visited Japan in end of 2018. We mainly stayed at Osaka, and the Airbnb we stayed at was a block away from a 7 Eleven store. I was particularly impressed by how delicious their food items were mainly their sandwiches, noodles and pastries. Definitely incomparable to the quality of food in 7 Eleven North America.
I'm so jealous of Japans flavorful foods. I am now mad we don't have fruit sandwiches and curry buns.
Try find an Asian supermarket. Chances are high it has those items
I have to drive 2 hours to find a fruit sandwich. That's like 75 miles.
It's worth it. But I think it's the only bakery in my state that does it o___o

I grew up in Hawaii and it was like a mix of American and Japanese 7-11s. Loved the hot food and the Spam Musubi (which you see more often now in Japan).
Of course I’ve been in Japan for the last 18 years, so I love my Japanese コンビニ.
I’m in Japan right now and the 7-Eleven here is way better. Everything is so fresh and healthy. I can’t wait to try all their famous foods and drinks. Japanese food is so delicious.😋😋

Back when I was visiting Japan, I was only planning on going to the convenience stores once. That once turned into 2 or 3 times a day cuz the stuff was so good
It is amazing how good 7-eleven food is in Asia. It makes travelling much easier and affordable for sure and the shrimp onigiri is just a thing I could eat for a 2 weeks straight. I wish they've done the same in EU.

OMG!!!! I'd just guessed it was India when Joe said that they're starting food wars with another country. So excited for Food Wars: USA v/s India. People are gonna know the Indian varieties of their favourite fast foods. This is gonna be really great.
George says he picked the onigiri from the back because they're fresher, but generally speaking onigiri are only kept on the shelf for a day or so. That doesn't seem like enough time to make it worth going for the "fresh ones" especially when you (and other people trying this "lifehack") will likely touch all the other items in front.
7-Eleven Japan actually asks people to pick the items in front (手前どり), to reduce food loss. It might also help reduce transmission rates of germs and bacteria, since there will be less touching overall.
I like that in the middle it's just a 10-minute segment of the Japanese guy enjoying all the delicious-looking food from Japan. Occasionally the editors remember that this is supposed to be a comparison video, and throw in about 3 seconds of the American guy. XD
After watch this show in the middle of the night I feel so hungry and like to visit Japan ASAP
There's a major difference between the two countries to consider and it's the "form factor" of the stores. American 711 developed as a place to grab essentials when grocery stores had limited hours; people went there for a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread when they forgot to get it before the stores closed, which isn't a problem anymore in the age of grocery deliveries and 24 hour wal marts. The prepared food and snacks came later as just to have something for hungry drivers grabbing something while they fuel up as many if not most 711s are connected to a gas station (at least that's the case where I come from.) The car centric nature of the majority of the US means that its a stop along the way to a destination and not something a person would want to purposefully go to as a lunch option.
Japanese 711s were developed in high density areas are a part of the neighborhoods that people live in, often in the case of Tokyo and other big cities by a train/metro station and are a part of daily life. That brings higher volume sales and brings the chance to develop more variety of high quality foods since they know it will sell well.
And/Or perhaps its due to their ingrained culture of "quality" (especially due to their rigid system, which is applied in almost, if not all, aspects of life) that has enabled them to deliver high level of standards when compared to the global scene.

Its also the way population is distributed in Japan half of the Japanese population lives in Greater Tokyo and Osaka. So these 7-11s are operating more like Bodega/Deli's NYC then 7-11s in the U.S. Its much easier to supply FRESH food, because they are supplying to thousands of stores in just two cities. It means the food can be prepared off site and delivered daily, which is impossible in America.
New York is the only city in America which is structurally similar to tokyo/osaka in terms of mass transit, walkability and density. While 7-11 in NYC isn't better than the rest of the country, there are convenience stores on nearly block that usually have deli counters and/or grills serving up fresh sandwiches, salads at a low price. They functionally are similar to Japanese 7-11 and shows that type of business model thrives in major cities.

Having lived in Japan for two years and being back in the States, I miss familymart the most they had the best hangover food .

This is making me hungry and jealous. I want to go to Japan so I can eat at 7-Eleven.
There was a 7-eleven near my house in Chicago for a long time and there were a few good products I tried there (though not many). I think some of their frozen drinks are very experimental and odd but the coke flavored slurpee is always a banger, and they used to offer poorboy subs that were quite basic but quite good (basically a combination of turkey, ham, salami, roast beef, and a little cheese). The cured and roasted meats would add a nice kick of flavor to complement the blander stuff, it was cheaper than subway, it had very high protein content, and it was quite tasty.
Sadly the poorboy is no longer offered in the 7 elevens I have been to, so the frozen drinks are really the only thing I remember fondly anymore in US 7 elevens.
I think the lower end of Japanese food is at a higher standard than the lower end of American food in general. Cheap fast food is higher quality in Japan as well. The only thing is that some foods like pizza are significantly more expensive in Japan for comparable size/quality in tje U.S.

Pretzels with peanut butter in them are surprisingly delicious, and a very filling snack.
I like getting regular mini pretzels and dipping them in peanut butter. They also go well with tiny cheese cubes.
As someone who is half Japanese and lives in Japan, I go to the nearest conbini which is like a 2 min walk away, almost everyday. They literally have everything from a single egg, to full blown family sized packaged Yakisoba. I personally love Frappes, where you can choose the flavor of the ice cream-ish thing, and you go to the drink machine and it adds the hot water and hot milk so it’s basically a slushee but it’s not a slushee. I can do grocery shopping for my mom at ease, and the cashiers have known me since I moved here! Also the conbini nearest to me have tables so you can eat immediately, and an extremely annoying pig squeaky toy that makes my ear bleed, and a Dino air blow up thing.
For everyone wondering and for those who may not be from the US- the reason for the drastic distinctions between the two stores come down to national food agency guidelines in America that are much less strict than those in Japan and even Europe. Because of this, companies are allowed to use fillers, preservatives, and artificial ingredients in their foods that, although passing US regulations, severely diminish both the food’s quality and taste. The reason for this? Capitalistic lobbying by this country’s food industry😎

100% spot on. Most, if not, all ingredients that are used in US (the synthetic ones, and ones like GMO, High fracture corn syrup, and the ones with 15 letters) are all banned everywhere else

The other country where 7/11 is king is Thailand. There’s literally one maybe every few hundred metres in some areas. It’s a one stop centre for everything…
Also, Family Mart has brought this amazingness of great convenience stores to most places around Asia. For example, 7/11 in Malaysia was coasting for a long time until Family Mart came into the market and they had to up their game with their offerings.

Yup, I went to a 7/11 in Bangkok and was astounded at how fancy it was. I had only ever been to gas station 7/11s in the US.

7-11 in Hawaii is very close to the Japanese ones. They are owned by the Japanese subsidiary so we have lots of Japanese snacks and drinks, and a wide variety of hot and cold foods as well as microwaveable dishes. I actually buy lunch or dinner from there sometimes because it's way better than anything I can make. And cheap, too!
This is making me want to go to Japan.

I miss convenience store onigiri so much. I’ve tried making it myself and it was not the same. I wish onigiri would become as popular as sushi in the west. They’re pretty similar.
