@@f8widescat392 you know that philosophy thing where you can't step into the same river twice? Things in Japan are like that. The only condiments that are a permanent fixture on the menu are ketchup and mustard, all other condiments just changes every two weeks or so whether they're good or bad (same as with the Kit Kats and many other products in Japan, you just can't get too attached.) Because Japan is always changing like that, a year seems like you've just seen one cycle of something much bigger.
Whenever I visited family in Japan, I'd grab a Teriyaki burger at the airport on my way back to the US. I associate teriyaki burgers with the bittersweet end of vacations and saying bye to family. The stuff tasted so good and so sad at the same time.
It's hard to compare Japan's menu to other countries' because they always have "seasonal" limited menu items that's rotated every 2-3 months. And we did use to have quarter pounders here, they removed them from the menu and replaced them with a different, smaller "high end" type burger, the name of which is slipping my mind at the moment. That type of burger also ended up being removed some time later. They seem to mostly focus on low price items now, and they also have a thing where you can double the number of patties on any burger for 100 yen for people who want something bigger. My personal Japan-exclusive favourite is the egg cheese, but I order it without pickles and ketchup and add my own Sriracha mayonnaise.
There were Gran Clubhouse, Gran Bacon Cheese, and Gran teriyaki(soon removed) from April.2017 to April.2021. And now we have Samurai burgers named after those’ Syouyu-based sauce
I am Japanese. All the McDonald's products in the U.S. look very powerful and delicious. I like American movies, American food, and cityscapes very much, so I would like to visit this country someday. McDonald's in Japan seems smaller than in the U.S., but I too love their limited time offerings. In particular, I highly recommend the moon-viewing burger(tsukimi burger), which is released around September and is very good.
Europe and Asia always get the cool stuff. Here in Canada we rarely get anything interesting as we follow the US menu. But it's even more restricted than the American one making it boring unless you're from a smaller area. They'll diversify better in small towns to try to get business, but when it gets too successful they'll remove anything interesting from the menu and it'll get boring again.
As a current (also by the time this video was recorded, i bet around july this year bcuz of the limited hawaiian edition burgers) employee at one of the McDonalds in Japan, I would like to give some heads up about people who's interested on trying the Japanese mcdonalds: - We have a scale for checking out the weight of the fries (but no one actually uses that besides training, since the store is busy, and the more you make fries, the more used to the weight u get) so, idk about the US but based on the look, I guess there was some fries missing in the american pack (I GUESS the large wouldn't be the same weight than the japanese one. but again, idk about american rules); - The "mayo" in teriyaki mcburger is actually called "lemon mayo" sauce, which some customers doesn't really like; - The Egg cheese burger, is the basic Cheese burger + egg; - we also have "mc chicken" in Japan, and it's called "chicken crisp" and coasts about 2$ (200yen) (but we also have a better quality chicken, the 'chicken fillet-o'); - the salad actually we can pick the dressing: the sesame one, or the onion one (which is personally my fave); - "bai" burgers (or what we also call "yoru mc" aka "night mc") are available from 5pm, not 5:30pm and it only applies for regular burgers (not limited edition burgers, neither samurai series burger) AND as of this moment (I say it bcuz there's a whole bunch of limited stuff in Japan) we have something called "PoteNage" (as he mentioned, japanese LOVES to abreviate stuff) which stands for "potatos+nuggets" aka "poteto+nageto" in japanese and for 500yen (about 5$) u can get 2packs of 5pieces nuggies + 1Large fries, OR for 800yen (8$) u can get 15nuggies + 2Large fries. Something that I found particularly interesting is that there's pickles all over the place in the american burgers. In the japanese, most likely we'll have lettuce (the chicken crisp is basically the yellow mayo sauce, lettuce and the chicken. no pickles) and some burgers that has pickles and/or onions, the customers usually asks to take it off.
I used to work as a manager at McDonald’s in Canada and I also travel to Japan often so when I do get McDonald’s in Japan, I often like to try something different there. It’s been a few years since I last went (partly due to Covid…), but I tried the locomoco burger and Hawaii blue drink and both were pretty good. Oh and the teriyaki burgers are pretty good.
A lot of the menu items in Japanese Mcdonalds change frequently because they're always trying new things. Short term, innovative novelty items sell well in Japan.
as someone who lives in japan = youre right! the japanese always try new things according to the season we're in (fall, winter, halloween, christmas etc)
That's also something I noticed between the two countries I've lived in. My home country also changes the menu frequently because they add limited or seasonal items on it, whereas the menu in Germany has very much stayed the same. If they introduce something and it does well, they'll make it a permanent item but that happens very rarely. Oftentimes they'll just bring back items that have done fairly good but it's nothing like a novelty food. The best example would be the spicy nuggets.
Fun fact, in the Netherlands (and neighbouring countries) we aren't familiar with the snap-and-squeeze sauce packets. So after being exhausted from 30+ hrs flying from NL to AUS, I found out how they work the hard way by squirting ketchup in my face in an attempt to open the package. Great fun
I'm so surprised that the US doesn't have mcfloats. Here in NZ, we call it spidas. Coke and vanilla ice cream is the best one but you can make spida with any ice cream and any soda/fizzy drink.
Former McDonald's employment here, there's actually about eight or so different quarter pounder and big mac options that aren't on the menu but are in the system.
That Hawaiian menu was sick, I say this from the UK where anything like that is hard to find. There is South Korean fast food places but they don't stack up.

Loved every bit of this episode ! Welcome, George! Best way I can think to describe a US/Canadian biscuit is that it is a small leavened quick bread that is firm on the outside and soft (and possibly crumbly) inside. These biscuits are usually not sweet, but they can be used as a platform for savory or sweet fillings or toppings, and can feature in any meal of the day.

As a former McDonald's employee, a few things to note. I worked in a McDonald's in Oklahoma. The eggs; the folded ones you typically get are frozen and slapped on a grill. We do have legit eggs too, they are on like the egg McMuffin. However the egg white delights are poured from a carton of just egg whites. Also in Oklahoma anyways, we had parfaits, bagels, ànd biscuits and gravy. Which really broke my heart when I moved to Oregon to find out that you can't get those everywhere. Also I believe they stopped their oatmeal raisin cookies, another heartbreak truly.
@@samantharickard7007 oh no. I moved to Oregon in 2019. I'm about to move back to Oklahoma in April. Oh no. Will they no longer have it? You have put a new fear into my heart
I don't think they should. I think they should do a country from each continent, they've already done Japan for Asia, they've already done Britain for Europe, so they should do an African country or Australia

Japan has anywhere from 1-3 special burgers on their menu at a time. Some are absolutely delicious, others kinda weird. Not a huge fan of the teriyaki stuff but their Ebi- shrimp burger is addicting- they just had a garlic shrimp variation this last month. Had a limited time menu item this morning- the cheese locomoco muffin (mcmuffin) and i think it beats out the Mega mentioned in this video as the best breakfast sandwich. Mcdonalds is currently much cheaper than when this video was made as the yen has fallen. I. Can get a meal for about $5. Overall, the quality is very good at mcdonalds japan, far surpassing quality in the states. However, no free refills and you have to ask for small dipping packets of ketchup.

Would've been funny in the ice cream segment if Joe had said, "in the U.S. we have... wait. Our ice machines are broken." Lol
"...Yes, ALL of them. No, we're not exaggerating."
Can I double the patty on any burger?🤔
I'd like to try it on a Big Mac
@@pdtatmhmgYou can also double the Big Mac. By Japanese
There were Gran Clubhouse, Gran Bacon Cheese, and Gran teriyaki(soon removed) from April.2017 to April.2021. And now we have Samurai burgers named after those’ Syouyu-based sauce

I have always been so jealous at Japan. They get all the cool stuff when it comes to their fast food/restaurant chains!
@Xros Heart Federation America still has the best portion size this is coming from a Singaporean
@@jonathanng138 Not really
@@jonathanng138 Yeah, but portion size is also why America has a high obesity rate.
The Japanese packaging is cute. I’m also surprised Mcfloats aren’t a thing here. But the ice cream machines are always down, so maybe that’s a factor.
The packaging reminded me of pretty patties from SpongeBob.
Ngl Japan beat the US on mcdonalds not only did that meal cost less in Japan it was probably healthier and fresher
I can't believe you guys made George as cohost of Food Wars. That's amazing!!!
Georgeさんがフ-ドウォ-ズの共済になる事を期待していませんが、かっこよすぎるね!よろしくおねがいします〜
Still waiting for McDonald's France and the McBaguette (yes, that's a real thing)
As a current (also by the time this video was recorded, i bet around july this year bcuz of the limited hawaiian edition burgers) employee at one of the McDonalds in Japan, I would like to give some heads up about people who's interested on trying the Japanese mcdonalds:
- We have a scale for checking out the weight of the fries (but no one actually uses that besides training, since the store is busy, and the more you make fries, the more used to the weight u get) so, idk about the US but based on the look, I guess there was some fries missing in the american pack (I GUESS the large wouldn't be the same weight than the japanese one. but again, idk about american rules);
- The "mayo" in teriyaki mcburger is actually called "lemon mayo" sauce, which some customers doesn't really like;
- The Egg cheese burger, is the basic Cheese burger + egg;
- we also have "mc chicken" in Japan, and it's called "chicken crisp" and coasts about 2$ (200yen) (but we also have a better quality chicken, the 'chicken fillet-o');
- the salad actually we can pick the dressing: the sesame one, or the onion one (which is personally my fave);
- "bai" burgers (or what we also call "yoru mc" aka "night mc") are available from 5pm, not 5:30pm and it only applies for regular burgers (not limited edition burgers, neither samurai series burger) AND as of this moment (I say it bcuz there's a whole bunch of limited stuff in Japan) we have something called "PoteNage" (as he mentioned, japanese LOVES to abreviate stuff) which stands for "potatos+nuggets" aka "poteto+nageto" in japanese and for 500yen (about 5$) u can get 2packs of 5pieces nuggies + 1Large fries, OR for 800yen (8$) u can get 15nuggies + 2Large fries.
I never knew that is how you break and squeeze sauce - I have learned something new today! Thanks mate!
I like how George pronounced protein, I've never heard someone say "pro-tane" that's cool
Mcd in Japan makes our McDonald's look like garbage food I tried it and my gosh so much better
as someone who lives in japan = youre right! the japanese always try new things according to the season we're in (fall, winter, halloween, christmas etc)
actually the mcdonalds canada menu does the same!
Led me to think
That's also something I noticed between the two countries I've lived in. My home country also changes the menu frequently because they add limited or seasonal items on it, whereas the menu in Germany has very much stayed the same. If they introduce something and it does well, they'll make it a permanent item but that happens very rarely. Oftentimes they'll just bring back items that have done fairly good but it's nothing like a novelty food. The best example would be the spicy nuggets.
I've been to the UK and Japan and I've seen their McDonalds... now I hate myself for missing on a golden opportunity
Great fun
I’m so excited for this! Japanese versions of American fast food is by far the most interesting. Everything looks so much better there

There were m&m's McFlurry before in JP.
As a Canadian, I really appreciated the “Canadian Salsa” callback!
I'm so surprised that the US doesn't have mcfloats. Here in NZ, we call it spidas. Coke and vanilla ice cream is the best one but you can make spida with any ice cream and any soda/fizzy drink.
Ikr!
Remember when we had the chocolate Fanta spidas? Omg was so good like jaffa flavored
Honestly, I think the reason the McDonald's in the US don't serve floats is because of the persistent breaking of the ice cream machines.
You can just make one yourself. We have the ingredients.
seriously ... I mean they have the ice cream ... it would be a no brainer just to add it to the menu.
Former McDonald's employment here, there's actually about eight or so different quarter pounder and big mac options that aren't on the menu but are in the system.

The thing I took from this is Japan has really neat condiment containers that I wish we had in America.
That Hawaiian menu was sick, I say this from the UK where anything like that is hard to find. There is South Korean fast food places but they don't stack up.
@@WeeleyTubewhy would you ever eat fast food in the first place do you not care for your health at all.
Let's just agree on the fact that George is cute and handsome, I am not sure there is a word for someone being cute and handsome at the same time but I'll call it cutesome

Agreed those looks very good as hell.
I'm definitely here for my man George. He's such a delight!
I miss the oatmeal raisin cookies
I never knew you could freeze eggs

Here in Illinois we haven’t had Biscuits and Gravy in over 2 years. They cut them out when Covid first started spreading and it made me so sad. 😭😭

I don't think they should. I think they should do a country from each continent, they've already done Japan for Asia, they've already done Britain for Europe, so they should do an African country or Australia
India would be shit no need for food wars mcdonalds or resturants that are in both america and india. Although other indian food like rice or biryani is reaaly good.

Yay! I’m so excited for this video and season! Welcome George!
Those pop open sauce packets are hands down the most hi tech sauce packets I've ever seen.
I 1000% want a coffee McFloat!
Here in Canada we also have the Quarter Pounder burgers.
Canada has a sort of fickle relationship with the metric system. Temperature, mostly metric. Weight, mostly imperial. At least in my experience.
I am so obsessed with Japan 😭 can’t wait to see more videos with George!!
I'm from America, but live in Japan. This is so weird to watch, lol. I'm proud of Japanese McDonald's (ebi burger is amazing), but I miss things from back home (I'm looking at you quarter pounder & fruit smoothies). Also, those BTS sauces were amazing! Welcome George! お疲れ様でした!
